We stopped in for a warm drink on a cold murder mystery morning and were delighted to be surrounded by fellow sleuths, local coffee klatches and a good feeling of community. I tried the Mexican mocha which warmed me up in a flash, along with an orange cranberry scone that was bursting with flavor. Not sure if I ran into the older man here that seems to be the center of some issues, but I can say I had a great experience here on two visits. What I appreciate about South Whidbey Commons is 1). They are open earlier than other coffee shops; 2). very reasonable prices. Had an espresso and some drip for the dad, and some breakfast sandwiches. Seems very popular with locals too. No straws, no garbage cans, no service, no questions are allowed to be asked. Employee was very rude until she realized that she was constantly messing up orders. Gave me a drink that clearly required a straw to drink and rather than telling me they had none, she handed me the drink without any explanation. I had to wait forever to get her attention to ask for a normal lid. I had remove the whipped cream which caused a mess. I cleaned up the mess and to my surprise had no trash can to throw the napkins from the clean up away. read more

I stopped in here after eating at the Braeburn, and this is the cutest little coffee/ brunch spot ever!! The welcoming vibe and good tunes are inviting. The inside has tons of books to read and browse, the bathrooms were clean. But the icing on the cake was the protected garden that had bumblebees and several hummingbirds flying around the flowers. It's absolutely adorable! They have little play areas for your kiddos to enjoy, and saucers for pets to get a drink and cool down. There are so many Ice-cream /coffee places in this area. This is an unique place that also serves food. They have very limited in-door seating (right now, due to COVID-19, there is no in-door seating): however, there are a few outdoor seats with tables). What I do like about this restaurant is the owner. He is a personable and very friendly. He basically talks REALLY loud - basically shouting - the whole time to customers, his cooks, sings to himself...super distracting if you're trying to work or read or talk. Again, he's super nice and all - but I and another customer left a bit before we would have otherwise - he was trying to read and I was trying to write, and we just couldn't focus. A nice little respite during our day trip to Whidbey Island and right off the main drag in Langley. The Commons is a great place to enjoy a little lunch...a warm beverage...and even a book to read. I'll start with the food. It was delicious! My wife had the Farmer's Stew (was more like a soup and not as thick as a stew, but anyways) and she was very satisfied with it. The beef broth was really tasty and it was chock-full of potatoes and carrots. We're thinking she might have gotten some of the last servings from the pot, as there wasn't a whole lot of beef in the bowl; but it was still good. I had the BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich. Oh me Oh my! This was so yummy. Very tender pork, with a savory sauce and a tiny taste of pickles made this a great lunchtime meal! The drinks, on the other hand, left a lot to be desired. I understand fully that this place employees volunteers and they're training baristas; but it was not really that good. We both had hot chocolates, and it just tasted like hot milk with chocolate syrup...and poorly made too. Next time we come in, I know we'll enjoy the food . . . but I think we'll just stick to drip coffee instead. All in all, this is a great cafe and they have some good things going for them. Loved this cute cozy coffee place in Langley. I tried the Artisan Hot Chocolate which was great. I loved the outdoor seating area which is covered (and tables are socially distant) so you can enjoy this place even in winters/rain. When we asked for a "for here cup" to be environmentally friendly...we were told, "we aren't doing those right now", then literally the next order delivered was in a "for here cup". In addition, there was a sign saying "try our oat milk"...when we enquired as to what oat milk tasted like, we got the response, "I don't know, all our milks taste the same...kinda milky". Taking into account that teens are in training to use the equipment and learn to serve, this place does a pretty good. Sometimes you have to repeat your order or ask for a change if you've gotten the wrong item, but it's a small price to pay for helping youth learn much needed skills.
