Best candy shop with the best pralines and tortues! So good we came here THREE TIMES during the 6 days we were in town. I thought I didn't like pralines, until I tried the ones from southern candy makers. The pralines are buttery. They melt in your mouth. The pecans are huge. The original creamy is a classic masterpiece, but the chocolate one is just as divine! What I love about the chocolate one is that the chocolate flavor isn't overpowering- there's a nice balance between the flavors from the chocolate, sugar, cream, and butter. They have other speciality flavors to choose from too! The tortue was my favorite. The caramel was smooth & I loved the chopped pecans at the bottom!! I tried both the white chocolate and milk chocolate, both of which were amazing, but I had a slight preference for the milk chocolate one! It's hard to just take a few bites without eating the whole thing lol it's addicting. Really appreciated the cool AC as soon as we walked in, since we were sweating from walking around the French quarters. Came here for the first time with my family. We're not from Louisiana and wanted to bring back what this city or state was known for our friends. The staff suggested their famous pralines so we ordered their smallest box. The original pralines are delicious, but you can only eat so much of it before getting diabetes lol. It's really rich and sweet. They have other praline flavors and other treats. Overall, pretty pricey for these little treats, but I guess it's once in a while. While we were in New Orleans, friends asked us to bring home some pralines. There's a lot of highly rated praline shops out there, and we picked Southern Candymakers as they were near the top of various lists and the shop was a short walk away from our breakfast restaurant during our last morning here. Southern Candymakers definitely delivers a lot of variety within its small retail space (including kitchen). David purchased a nice selection to bring home to his Mom while Gayle and I ordered more to basically much on over time. Although we finished the box sooner than expected and the pralines and other candies we purchased were delicious, I found it all a little too sweet and in the case of the turtles a little too salty. The only question I can't answer, is whether Pralines are Kosher? Although I have a definitive Yes letter (from a local Orthodox organization) for Cafe Du Monde Beignets. a similar confirmation for pralines remains elusive. Would I eat them anyway? What a great treat and timing, hardly any wait time. I guess the praline candies are so popular because they were constantly making new batches. By the time we, made it to the counter they were all gone but they informed us it would be another 30-35 minutes before a new batch and we could place an order and come back to pick them up. This place caught our eye from down the street. It is a quaint candy shop with high prices but very good service! We walked in and immediately smelled the candy and sweetness. The workers at the cashier offered us free praline samples, which were tasty! The store itself is pretty small, but the shelves are stocked with so many kinds of candy, sauces, and other items. They even have ice cream with 8-10 flavors, and refrigerated drinks! The prices overall were high. For example, a pound of dark chocolate glazed almonds was nearly $20, but I feel like this place is unique. We happened to walk by here and knew we had to get pralines before we left town and we are glad we did. The interior is not that big, but the selection is nice and the staff super friendly. They gave us generous sized samples and we really just wanted to eat them then and not take any home so they let us buy a very little amount. The price is based on weight and we tried the original flavor and ended up getting it. I then got some peanut butter flavored, again a small amount. It was less than $10 for a few pieces. One of the guys behind the counter jumped into action and began interacting with us. He was super helpful with offering samples. Best place for pralines, where it all started in New Orleans. We normally come here for gifts to bring back home, and I usually get a rum one for myself. I like that the pralines are medium size, cause otherwise it's a lot of sugar to take in. My hubby and I wanted to bring home pralines as souvenirs for friends and family, so we bought a bunch of different pralines from different candy stores, them took them back to our hotel and had a big taste test. Southern Candy was the winner by a LARGE margin. We gobbled up the Southern Candy and threw away the other brands. There's no comparison. The first time I came to New Orleans I walked past this shop and wanted to check it out because I saw they had sweet potato pralines. Sadly, they had just closed and I was leaving the next day before the store would open. I put them on my list of places I would have to check out when I returned. Four years later I finally made it back and it was worth the wait. I got the lemon and sweet potato pralines. They were both amazing. Southern Candymakers is now on a small list of places I'll have to come back to whenever I visit New Orleans. The pralines aren't cheap. They cost $36.95 a pound but they are truly delicious. I'd highly recommend visiting if you're ever in New Orleans. They have another location I think is considered their main/flagship store. I never planned on getting Pralines while in New Orleans. I'm not a sweets person unless I'm craving it, I swear. But you try and walk past the delicious smells coming from this candy shop and tell me you could resist!! Like a Herder leading his Sheep, I naively followed my nose and ended up in this little store and couldn't resist getting some of my own. So- I never knew praline's were a thing until I went to New Orleans about a week ago. And let me tell you........ I'm mad it's taken me this long to try them. Now that I've had a taste, I'm addicted, and I'm considering moving to NOLA solely so I can go to this candy store every day. We were only in New Orleans for a few days, but somehow we managed to make a trip to Southern Candymakers TWICE. It's that good. I appreciate that they give you samples to try out the different flavors, so you can see what you like and what you don't like. The pralines I got were the original, rum, peanut butter, coconut, chocolate and lemon. My favorites besides the original were the coconut and lemon. Although they are known for their pralines, I am a chocolate-addict so had to get some chocolate as well. I got a peanut butter chocolate pretzel which was OK. The chocolate turtles (or tortuses, I believe they call them) though, were, and I'm not kidding you, the BEST turtles I've ever had. Move over Fannie Mae.... These tortuses were the freshest I've ever had, the caramel was still so soft... I wish I got a box to take home with me. Apparently they could not figure out how to process a 10% they had promised to this couple and the rest of the customers waited while all 4 employees were gathered around the calculator. 11/24/17 Okay, I admit it... I'm a newb at reviewing candy stores. I mean, your typical candy store at the mall, or sometimes on those touristy streets all carry very similar stuff. Buckets of sugary goodness. Tart mouth puckers. Colors galore. Well, at least most in New Orleans ain't really that... Pralines is the big thing here. Different than what I've had in California too, which tend to be like crunchy toffee pieces, or sometimes just the nuts themselves. But I trust these are the correct pralines--I tasted these and they're sorta like semi-hard toffee/caramel encasing fresh nuts, usually not crunchy. And this candy store got tons of pralines and all the other favorites of New Orleans. Very nice selection here. When I got home I was dying to try the sea salt tortues which were soo fresh and delicious. I immediately ordered a 1lb box to be shipped to STL. If you ever remember how good Fannie May turtles with and w/out the chocolate use to be, well this place tops them, completely blows them out the water. What can be said of a place that offers wall to wall sugary goodness? I had already spent half a day eating at one of southern candy makers competitors and having the sugar rush of my life. One would think that I have the discipline to pass up another opportunity to devour these beyond sweet delectable morsels of sugar, pralines or chocolate. Nope. Not a chance. I rationalized that I never eat this stuff back home so why not. Besides, I am walking my derrière off traversing the entirety of the French Quarter and the Marigny seemingly multiple times a day. In any event, I tried a couple pralines but after eating Laura's pralines, I decided to try here some of the various chocolates. I got 4 pieces to go so I could savor the chocolates that had various fillings as I continued walking the quarter. They were each delicious although my plan was foiled by my gluttony as I didn't get very far down Decatur before I had come to the end of my road paved with chocolates. At long last, I have tasted a praline. It took until the last day of my NOLA trip, but I was trying to find a little king cake to bring home (no luck, someone send me one, thanks much!) so I walked in here as part of my search. A staff member was standing nearby and basically stuck pralines in our faces, so I decided to be adventurous and try one. God, that was good. Like really good. Creamy and sweet with a nice crunch. I didn't expect it to taste like that! Their prices were darn expensive (like $25 for a pound), so I ordered a quarter pound to bring home for my praline-loving mom. She later confirmed that they were wonderful by eating them all in one sitting. We spent longer than expected in here...taking about football chokes and my random affinity for the Minnesota Vikings and the color purple. Happened across this place while walking along Decatur. The signs saying Bon Appetit named them best creamy pralines and the lovely smell wafting out of the shop drew us in. We got an assortment to try and ate one of the original creamy pralines. Wow, very tasty, even though it's a little sugary. Costs something like $23/lb, but worth sampling. Watch out that you don't get a sugar overload, though! Got about $20 worth: 2 original creamy, 1 rum, 1 sweet potato, 1 coconut, 1 chocolate, 1 dark chocolate turtle, and 1 dark chocolate toffee (I think? can't remember anymore what I chose). Haven't sampled everything yet. Will take some time to work through that much sugar...but will update with opinions on the flavors as I do. Ok, took me a week, but finally got to trying a bit of each candy I bought. Here's the final review of the individual candies: original creamy, coconut, and chocolate were very good. The original creamy was the only one I tried the same day we bought it, which probably gave it an advantage. It was kind of sugary but had a wonderful slightly caramel/butter flavor that was addictive despite being probably sweeter than usually like. (I'm usually not a big candy fan.) didn't really like rum or sweet potato (sweet potato was very cinnamony...wonder if they gave me a cinnamon one by accident instead of sweet potato, or maybe they add cinnamon to the sweet potato). dark chocolate toffee was very good. toffee was crunchy but not tooth-breaking hard--had just enough brittleness to it to be pleasant to bite. dark chocolate turtle was too sugary/sticky sweet for my taste read more
