I've been to over 20 Abbott's locations and I can honestly say that this is one of the coolest ones. I grew up going to Abbott's; it was a few blocks away from my house and we all loved it. I know this location opened a few months ago and I was so excited to try it. I stopped in a few times; check their schedule. They open later in the day. Other nearby ice cream spots open as early at 9am. I loved this Abbott's! It's small but they have plenty of treats and assortment of daily made custards, sorbets and toppings. So so so so good!!!! Hits your sweet tooth craving for sure! We tried the strawberry shortcake sundae, and the chocolate malt shake! Both were 10/10! The custard is the perfect sweetness, not overly sweet at all. It is a small place but service was fast and everyone was so nice. Dropped by for dessert because we were nearby. They had 4 flavors only- vanilla, chocolate, cotton candy and pineapple sorbet as the dairy free option. I was hoping for more unique flavors to pick from but I realized it's more about the toppings/additions. I got the strawberry shortcake sundae and it was delicious except some of the strawberries looked like they were starting to go bad. The shortcake was a great addition. For all the frozen dessert connoisseurs out there, I feel it's imperative for me to talk about the differences between ice cream and frozen custard, as although the two are frozen desserts, there is a difference between them. According to the FDA, "it's all about the yolks". Ice cream contains at least 10 percent milkfat and LESS than 1.4 percent egg yolk, while custard contains at least 10 percent milkfat but must have MORE than 1.4 percent egg yolk. In fact, some ice creams are made without any yolks at all. Frozen desserts such as ice cream, frozen custards and gelato are all made with what's known as overrun. Overrun is basically the amount of air that's beaten into a frozen dessert. Ice cream can have up to 100% overrun (meaning 1 gallon if ice cream makes 2 gallons of finished ice cream once the air is incorporated). This makes for a fluffier dessert. Custard typically has a 20% overrun, which makes for a denser product. But I digress. In my opinion, Abbott's has the best frozen dessert in the French Quarter, and I'm not stating this lightly. With it's roots dating back to 1902 where Arthur Abbott perfected his frozen custard recipe, Abbott's knows all about custard, and its evident in the outstanding taste and texture. Abbott's features their 3 signature flavors (vanilla, chocolate & chocolate almond), cones & scoops, sundaes, splits, milkshakes, flurries, floats, cakes, pies and pints to go. I personally like their flurries, which is often called a "concrete" at other establishments. However, once you try Abbott's, you may never want to go to another establishment again. The desserts are delicious and the store is impeccably clean. The only downside, if you can even call this a downside, is the location, as if you do not live in the French Quarter or are staying at a local hotel, parking can sometimes be a little tricky. read more

Abbott's was disappointing. I stopped by while walking around the French quarter, thinking some ice cream was in order. If I could do things over, I would have chose differently. First, the flavors. I sampled the peach, and it was so underwhelming. It tasted more like vanilla ice cream, with very little peach flavor to be had. The person at the counter even acknowledged that they add extra peach flavoring because they know it's an issue (she recommended against getting a peach milkshake too). I ended up going with chocolate almond instead, and it was more of the same story. It tasted like someone bought chocolate ice cream from a grocery store, left it out for a few hours, then crammed chopped almonds into the half-melted mess as an afterthought. Speaking of which - second problem was the temperature control, or lack thereof. It was a cloudy day, with highs in the 70s -- nothing NOLA can't handle. But the ice cream was served to me half-melted. If you're a frozen custard store, there's really no excuse for that. Finally, the serving size was pathetic. I sprung for a waffle cone and the person at the counter didn't fill it to the top. I had to start by eating part of the waffle cone before I could get to any of the (now melted) ice cream! All in all, I regret coming here. Maybe they were having an off day, but I wouldn't go back based on my experience. There's an Amorino gelato place nearby that's a safer bet. read more

I ordered a waffle bowl sundae, he made the bowl right there, no problem. You can also taste any flavor of custard, as many as you want we were told. My first choice was cookies and cream, it was good so I had a hot fudge sundae in a waffle bowl. My friend had a hot fudge sundae with chocolate custard. My husband ordered chocolate custard in a waffle bowl and said it was equally as delicious. Honestly, they were both over the top delicious. Bonus is that the staff was super patient explaining the menu, and offering samples as well as suggestions. What I was disappointed in was the toppings. I got brownie bites and "cookie dough". It's $1 per topping, which is fine but they are pretty skimpy in giving you any! It was nice to get some frozen custard on a hot and humid day. I got the frozen custard with fudge, carmel and peanuts that looked like an upside down teacup on a stick. Hubs got a blackberry chocolate on a cone. Mine was super frozen and then melted quickly. I was hoping it would taste like a snickers but everything was separately layered so you can't really get all the flavors without a melty mess on your hands. Hubs was already melty when we got it.
