I love the pralines here they're always consistently good. They have a lot of other confections but the original praline is my favorite. People are always nice and don't mind giving you a sample of something you're curious about. This shop smells like melted butter and sugar and that makes for a pleasant experience as you check out all of the goodies that they have. The service was friendly and energetic. It smelled so good in there too, yum. I wanted to get some pralines for a couple of my coworkers to experience. The sample was right on the money like I remember from childhood so this was the place. They had orbs cute knick knacks in there on top of taffy I think it was, chocolate fluer de lis and other candies that looked really good. Nate was so friendly and the samples were delicious. The original praline cookies were mouth watering, the candies pecans were addictive, and the rainbow sorbet was a huge hit with the kids (the flavor is meant for those with a huge sweet tooth). We passed by this store while walking the French Quarter in 99 degrees heat and since it is cold inside...the ambiance is really cute and welcoming-- we went in. The place was packed and I thought it may be a good place to get more boxes of pralines for family and friends back home. I thought I should taste it first so I got 3 individually sold pralines from the counter - 2 classic, 1 chocolate and paid $10 for it. It unfortunately does not have good texture..almost sandy, far from being creamy, and hardly has any nuts. Totally not worth $3 a piece. read more

And trust me, you will wait here! I did appreciate the free sample but it wasn't enough to get me to bring some pralines home with me, instead I went with a Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup, combining two of my favorite things into one treat! Unfortunately it was a bit of a mixed bag. While the flavors were good, the way it was made--with a thick layer of chocolate on top--that biting into it caused the peanut butter to come out, requiring deft actions not to let it fall on the floor or get all over your hand. If you enter from the back off of Decatur you can see the candy making area as the pralines and tortues are made fresh in store. Amazing candy place in NOLA that is a MUST to visit. They give free samples of their pralines which are top notch!!! The employees are very nice and helpful. Tasty confection shop connecting Decatur and N Peters Street in New Orleans. The shop is easy to locate and walking distance from Bourbon street. I don't like being on Bourbon street, however, was in the area for a parade. Of course I was craving pralines and stopped in here for a quick treat. The praline shops typically hand out pieces of pralines as free samples if you want to try it first. I recommend trying a flavor or two first since you may be surprised at which one you prefer. I'm a fan of the traditional pecan praline flavor as well as the chocolate version. Best pralines in the USA?? Not sure about that. Southern Candymakers are an award winning candy and sweets shop on a super hidden little street with a small entrance, and at the time of my visit next to a construction area. It basically looked closed for business. Pralines are a popular treat in New Orleans and I had the luxury of tasting some good ones throughout my trip. After much experimentation I can strongly say these are not MY best praline experience. At a crazy $36.95/lb it literally cost more than crab legs! We were offered samples of their original creamy pralines and both felt it was to sweet. Honestly at that point we just made some polite purchases since we had a sample. We got an alcohol of some sort Pecan and a seasonal pumpkin flavor. Two tiny pieces of pralines came out to be over $7. Crazy... Definitely not an affordable souvenir item. Speaking of souvenirs this place is a tourist trap with plenty of random gift boxes of assorted pralines, chocolate, fudge and more. Just a strep price and not even the freshest looking products. It was nice to try but I wouldn't care to come back. I wouldn't even want these as a gift that someone else paid for. It's just too sweet and I can't handle more than a few small bites. read more

I started my love of Southern Candymakers with their West Bank location, and almost a year later found this location. The selection is amazing! Don't be put off by the pricing - for quality product, handmade, it's worth it. Convenient location just on the edge of the Quarter, and hourly parking across the street. My favs, after working my way through quite a bit of their selections, are the lemon pralines, peanut butter pralines and sweet potato pralines. I do love the King Cake pralines during Mardi Gras season as well. Love the choice of chocolates - if it's made in dark, it's made in milk and white as well. I'm "Team White" when it comes to my chocolate, and that goes for the dipped cherries, the pecan clusters and the peanut butter cups. (Just Jif in the middle - YUM!) Will always be my go-to for that something from New Orleans gift for others. read more

Googled where to get pralines in New Orleans and this was the first place that popped it. It was named best pralines by Bon Appetit so we had to give it a try! It's a small shop, but once you walk in, you are immediately greeted by the delicious smells that will instantly make you smile. The lady at the counter offered us samples of the original pralines. My friends have never tried it so don't really have anything else to compare them too but they were really good. The texture is kind of hard/crumbly and it tastes kind of like butterscotch and cookie butter combined. And there are nuts inside. Immediately bought a few boxes to bring home. This place is kind of tucked away but very much worth going to. The workers are so kind and friendly and you can sample almost anything before you buy it. Their pralines are delicious, specifically the original and the lemon one (which I believe might be a limited time only). The coconut one was also very good. I like that they separate their chocolate cases by the chocolate type, i.e. white chocolate, milk, and dark. This makes it super easy for those of us who look for a specific type. And almost everything is available in each type of chocolate. I also bought the white chocolate cranberry cup and it's delicious. My absolute favorite thing I got from here was the white chocolate covered macadamia toffee. It is the best toffee I have ever had! My mom bought some of their taffy and it's also delicious and I usually don't care for taffy. You can see them making the chocolates fresh when you walk in. They also have some boxed baking mixes for purchases and some jelly belly's and glazed pecans which are amazing! They also have fudge, which I didn't try but my mom did and bought some. Southern Candymakers still hold the distinction of making some of the best versions of them I've ever had. They've been around the NOLA scene for a good minute (#1) and they've continued to make a name for their high quality confections. This is the original location, not to be confused with the French Quarter location (#2). Although small, it packs plenty of worthy treats for sweet lovers as well as folks just looking to get an edible gift. The place smells wonderful like a true bakery and they're constantly churning out fresh batches of sweetness all throughout the day. Obviously, the pralines are their star attraction. For those looking for simplicity, it doesn't get any better than their original batch. It has a lovely bite with a bit of a creamy fudge like consistency and a smooth but sugary sweet finish. They have a variety that range from original creamy, lemon, peanut butter (!), and chocolate. I personally think their assorted praline boxes are the perfect gift, as are the mini pralines. They don't come cheap though, a pound of the original pralines are close to $30 each. 1 pound. It's not all just pralines of course, they have an incredible selection of tortues (#3), a gourmet caramel that comes in a ton of flavors. Whether it's the double dipped, the caramel sea salt, cashew, etc, I like to shoot for the gift basket of assorted, which comes out to be $65. They also have fudge, divinity, and even a fun variety of nuts / toffees. The service has always been gracious with the samples and are good about answering all the newbie questions, along with making stellar recommendations. Being greeted at the door with "hey pretty lady" and free samples was simply divine. I'd never had a praline until today and the sweet men inside southern candy makers made sure I left with tastes I'll remember and a slew of sweet treats for my family and friends back home. The smell is actually what drew me in, and I could see candy being made as I walked through the door. This was a genuinely FUN experience and it's because of the people and treats inside! Pralines, salt water taffy, coated nuts, cookies, ice cream, chocolate are all in there and all good! The sweet potato praline was hands down my favorite, I ended up leaving with a large quantity of them and I wouldn't have even tried them if the staff inside hadn't convinced me to!
