I have always wanted to try a savory beignet and the crab beignets from Loretta's was a great start! The line was pretty long but it moves relatively quickly so definitely jump in that line! We ordered one crab beignet each and grabbed a table nearby. The crab lumps inside were super tender and savory, I loved every single bite of it! OMG, everything was delicious! I highly recommend getting there at least 15 minutes before they open as the line gets long, FAST! I arrived about 10 minutes prior to opening and there were already 10 people ahead of me. I got the crab beignet, traditional beignets, praline/chocolate chip cookie, and a sweet potato cookie. This place is on the French Market towards the end of it. You know you are there when you see the line. The line is long but it moves fast. The beignets are sooo good. We for the praline filled. They are small and one order has 3 but they are pretty filling. We also got the crab beignets and the savory flavor on that's is delicious. These are the best beignets I've ever had! The server was nice because I wanted to try the crawfish beignets but I love crab and just wanted to try a savory one. The cashier was nice and told me Feburary-April is the best time for cheap crawfish. It's in the French Market where there are multiple shops and restaurants in an open air space. The crab beignet was flaky and so flavorful. I loved it and I'm so glad I decided to get the original beignets because they were sooo good. Everybody debates who has the best beignets in New Orleans and Loretta's is often held as a local favorite. While they're delicious, I think it comes down to personal preference. Where Loretta shines is their stuffed beignets that can be a little on the sweet side but also make for an innovative and unique beignet experience. Altogether, we tried the classic, crab stuffed, Chocolate, and praline. The texture of their beignets is more croissant-like compared to some of the other others we tried in town. For the classic one, I preferred beignets from Du Monde but the crab stuff one really blew us away. The buttery texture with the delicious seasoned filling made for such a delicious Rich bite that it makes sense that they only sell one per order because I honestly don't think I could eat a bunch of them. They're like a perfect little appetizer bite. The chocolate one was my second favorite, although it was quite sweet. In that same vein, I found the pecan praline one to be a little too sweet. So if you're somebody with a major sweet tooth, then these will absolutely hit the spot. When you get here, you order at the counter and find somewhere to sit within the market and they sell out pretty early. Even though they close at 4 PM I think we got there around 2PM and they were already selling out and we were some of the last people to be able to order beignets, so plan accordingly. Waited in a relatively fast-moving line, which was a good start. But if you're coming here for the first time, make sure you understand the "beignet language"--one order equals three beignets, which isn't immediately clear. The signage could definitely use some work. It's a bit misleading (see photo). Based on the display, it looks like only the plain beignets come with 3 and that they offer peanut butter and jelly, but they actually don't. There was also an issue with overcharging, which required the entire team to step in and sort it out. Hopefully the charges were properly reversed--we'll see. I've had beignets before at Cafe du Monde and was not impressed at all but with a line snaking around a corner (or two), decided to give beignets another try and with a TWIST of pralines! I was afraid the pralines + nuts was going to be too sweet, but it turned out a good balance with the caramel-tasting drizzle and powdered sugar and slight crisp. Friend said the savory crab cake beignet was good also - so will try that next time. Tried the praline shoe sole also and I really liked the texture - crispy layers and a bit firm - reminded me of a Chinese butterfly cookie aka palmiers but better because it's thin! I will say - despite the portion being tiny for $9 - the crab beignet was definitely worth it and quite delicious. The biggest thing that threw me off was the size vs. price of the beignets. They're about double the price and half the size of what I'm used to. I understand they're filled and more specialty sort of filling (especially the crab, crab ain't cheap) but it was still shockingly small. I bought just one crab beignet thinking I could share it with my brother (who is 6'6" by the way )... yeah that was unrealistic. It was basically a one-bite situation. No place does beignets better than Loretta's. They are so soft and delicate and buttery and delicious.
