Would not recommend this curly hair salon. The prices are extremely high and the service does not match the price tag. I had been a client for four years and stuck with them mostly because there seemed to be limited options for salons tailoring to curly hair. I had wanted to try coloring my hair recently and booked with the salon owner who I thought would be more hands on in getting me the results I wanted. It took two visits to get the color I wanted and the attitude of the salon was not very empathetic or understanding. I also echo what others say about the hair cut only visit being pricey but you leave with frizzy, unruly hair. I'm used to situations where I felt my most confident after leaving a haircut and instead at Southern Curl, I would have to make the choice of spending over $200 to leave feeling put together vs doing the cut alone and just go straight home to wash and style my hair myself. I feel less alone reading other reviews that others got the same feeling of being a burden or nuisance. It is also pretty apparent that when you have a negative experience or feedback, the salon is quick to say goodbye and say you're not a good fit for them, again placing the blame on the client and not taking any ownership of what they could do better. First the paperwork: this much acknowledgement that you can't fault them if they don't do right by you should be a red flag. Second, the cut: the cut you get allows you to only wear your hair exactly the way you walk out With no versatility. The cut is a "method" that does not take into account your face shape or lifestyle. and your hair will be wet-look curls, not soft curls. Last but not least: Three months after regular use of $300 of prescribed hair products, my hair was falling out by handfuls and had the texture of a horse's mane. I tossed them all, went back to Nioxin and Oribe products and my hair is soft and wavy again. This salon was a total loss for me. It might work for someone but it sent me away with I'll-advised products and a cut I'm still growing out of. read more

I've been to Southern Curl twice now -- and sadly, I won't be returning. As someone with curly hair, I appreciated the expertise during my first visit where I paid for the full cut and style, which was well over $200. This time, I opted for just the haircut, which was $130. While I understood this didn't include a wash and style, I assumed they would at least apply a bit of product so I wouldn't leave the salon with my curls looking frizzy and unfinished. To my surprise, they told me they don't do anything to the hair unless you pay for the full cut and style. I even politely asked for just a small dab of gel so I wouldn't be walking around with my curls looking like a mess for the rest of the day. After some back and forth, I was finally handed a tiny sample of product -- but only after being made to feel like I was asking for something unreasonable by the visibly annoyed receptionist. At the end of the day, I can get a $130 haircut anywhere -- and most places will at least ensure you leave looking presentable. It's disappointing that a salon that specializes in curls -- where styling product is such a key part of the process -- would lose a customer over something so small. read more

Let's begin with the application process. It's a whole questionnaire to ensure you are a fit for their salon. They explain the process of your initial haircut and the length of time it will take. They also explain their deposit requirement, cancellations, and fees (should you arrive late or not show up). Make sure you read ALL of it. You'll have to include pictures of your hair and what the style you'd like to achieve. Next step, they call and verify you're a good fit for their salon. Agree on a date you're available and send you a link. You must respond to the link within one hour to pay the deposit. Then you'll received a text message which led me to believe I was good to go. The day before the appointment you will need to wash and style your hair. This is common for curly salon appointments. It seems natural to assume the day of the appointment goes as planned because you've paid a deposit and know you will lose your deposit and be charged the full price of services should you not show up. Well no, I show up and provide them my name. The girls at the front are young and do a poor job of hiding emotions. I immediately know something is wrong. Long story short, my appointment was not officially scheduled because I didn't respond "yes" to a text message. I show them and explain the message doesn't say I have to respond yes. They decide to schedule me two weeks out. The owner Robin is nearby comes and speaks to me and agrees to move me towards the end of the day. Great, I move my schedule around and know it's going to be a busy day for me. I arrived later in the day and finally get my haircut by Emmy and the hair was styled by Robin. During the cut Emmy says she has one year experience. Luckily, I know my hair will grow back so I remain optimistic. The product they try on my hair appears to be working well on my hair. I leave content and with a bag full of purchased product. Later during dinner, my friends and husband (who usually doesn't notice anything) begin to comment on the long pieces of hanging hair. No biggie, curly hair does odd things and it appeared fixable. The following morning, my hair is super dry and feels brittle. I have to work so it goes up in a bun and stays there until I have the opportunity to wash it. I washed it and decided not to use the products I was sold because it's pretty obvious my hair didn't like the products. I reached out to Robin and sent pictures. She tells me to call the salon to schedule an edit and reminds me the product has to be returned before 15 days. My edit appointment is scheduled past the 15 days so I decide to keep the hair tied up until my appointment and to swing by to return the product. I arrived at the salon and Robin tried to convince me to keep the shampoo and conditioner. She said next time I can purchase the product they use to style my hair. I explained I will not do so because I want to make sure my hair likes the product prior to any purchase. I am told I will receive store credit. I leave and the text messages begin. Y'all can read the messages and form your own impressions. I returned for my hair edit and I was a little apprehensive because of the text messages and decide to bring a friend. Robin greeted us and got straight to work. She agreed the shape on the bottom needed to be shaped and makes a few edits on the front. I was in and out in 15 minutes. This was my experience at the salon. It seems others have an overall great experience. I think my hair was cut by someone who had less experience with very tight curls and well the results show the lack of experience. I am not sure why I was scheduled with Emmy since they saw my hair in photographs and saw it in person. There was no surprise regarding my thick curly locks. Overall, I was not very satisfied with the whole experience. Robin was very polite when I returned for the edit but the messages that were previously sent left me feeling like her politeness was not fully genuine. I am a first-time customer of Southern Curl and have given it about a week to write this review. When I see some reviews about the booking process I wonder why people are so against the online forms and pictures. Maybe we are all too bogged down with tasks, generally, but I feel like it is a great way for the staff to understand your personal needs before you even go for the consultation. The more info the better. As for the service, the experience was really great and the stylists, Payton and Robin were really great. The education was very helpful and their knowledge about curly hair makes a huge difference. Curl type, cut type, head shape, measurements, hair style habits, etc. I wore my cut and product out for 4 days to see how things would go and I love my results. The treatment gave my natural color moisture, shine and dimension when I walked in with it looking dry, dull and flat. My curls felt so soft and bouncy, and it wore well even when it was a mess from waking up ( no bonnet that night ). I have never had a dry curly cut before, and I was not at all disappointed. I have been with many stylists in the past who always did wet cuts and the grow out phase was not good. I will leave another review in 3 months to gauge how this cut grows out. Their knowledge on the issues of wet cuts vs dry with the shape was spot on and I can't wait to see how this cut grows out. I am a low maintenance hair girly and I am very pleased with my result. The upfront cost is not "cheap" but I believe it is worth the investment because unlike other hair types, we curly girls can do without a cut for a longer time when the cut is right! Do the math. Every 6 - 8 weeks to shape it up at 50-60 per cut or 12-16 weeks if even necessary. Personally, I prefer a worthy investment in my self care, for the expertise, rather than a budget version that has left me disappointed and even crying in the past! Not only were they master curly hair whispers, but they were also very kind, thoughtful, and accommodating. There was no waiting, no going back-and-forth from client to client. I was one of those people that thought the only way to look pretty was to have straight hair. I hated my curls and did everything I could to burn it straight. It wasn't until recently that my best friend with luscious curly hair inspired me to give mine a shot, but it was overwhelming to figure out and get right on my own. That's where I feel that this salon is a gift from heaven. I was so lucky to get matched with Robin as my stylist. You can really see her passion for wanting to help curly-haired people shine through. She has made it her mission to learn everything there is about curls to then pass on that knowledge to her customers (more on her below). The very minimal knowledge I had done prior to coming (the Pinterest "what curl-type do you have, 3A, 3B" etc) was immediately debunked. Before even washing or styling my hair, Robin sat with me to hear my story, to listen to my frustrations, and to analyze my hair type. Explaining how there is so much more to a person's curl than just its curly shape as Pinterest suggests. After finding my exact curl-type, something immediately clicked and she knew exactly what I would need. So many cool moments of me sharing "I use x product" followed with her insane knowledge of "that will work for "x" hair, but you don't have that thickness, so it's weighing you down. What you need is "x" instead". I felt so trusting of her and her knowledge was unparalleled. After the amazing cut, she then also spent time teaching me how to style it with the products she was recommending. She was sooo patient with me and we did it over and over until I got it right and felt confident that I could do it at home. I never felt rushed which was so special. And I never felt like she was just pushing random products on me to make money. She really cared about my hair and was only using products that would actually make an impact. I was scared that my "hair salon" curly hair was going to look so different after I did it on my own, but it's amazing that after my shower at home and my own styling with what she taught me, my curls look like I have just come out of the salon again. It is such proof that she knew exactly what she was doing, and gave me the perfect advice on what I needed for my unique hair type. On Robin: She is a one-in-a-million stylist -- she mentioned that they usually cut the hair first and then do the moisture treatment, but in looking at my hair, she said "you know what, let's first do the treatment, dry you, then cut, then dry again and then style -- I think that's what we need for your hair". It was going that extra mile for me that I was so amazed by. It was her ability to pivot to adjust to my needs with her intuitive knowledge of what will work for each person's curls. She didn't have to do that -- she could've totally just cut my hair, styled me once and leave it at that, but she wanted only the best and took that extra time with me to make sure it was perfect. Price: yes it's expensive, but I've learned the hard way that you just can't get quality for cheap -- and I'd much rather spend what I spent here with long-lasting knowledge of how to style my curls daily, with products that actually work, than to keep spending $125 at 6 different salons trying to get it right. You get the ENTIRE package here. It's an investment piece and one you won't regret. To me, it honestly felt like a steal considering everything they offer and give you during your appointment. Salon: I literally felt like I was at a 5-star hotel. They have a free snack bar stocked with all the little treats, cookies, chips, teas you can think of that you can grab at any point in your appointment. The hair-wash room has warm ambient lighting and smells so good, chairs are so comfy. I almost took a nap getting my hair washed. All the staff were so sweet and friendly and warm. Treatments: I know it's paying a little more, but the hydration treatments they have and offer are a MUST. My hair felt like glass with how smooth it was, and at first we were actually saying how much we'd have to cut off with how dry my hair was, but after doing the treatment, we realized we didn't have to cut much hair at all! They wouldn't book an appointment without photos. I was a regular customer a few years ago, and wanted to go back for a cut. I filled out the lengthy appointment request form, but it requires you to include multiple photos of your hair. I told them I wasn't comfortable with this and asked if I could book without it. They responded that they needed length and texture to know the time needed for the appointment. I told them my length and curl pattern and said again that I wasn't comfortable with the requirement, and would like to book without it. I would even pay extra if needed. They said it was MANDATORY, and wouldn't book the appointment!! Everyone was professional and super nice. However; Southern curl did not have the styling product to accommodate my 4C hair. I have a regular Stylist who keeps my curls poppin! I went in hoping for a different look. I should have kept my hair the way it was. 3 hours and $250 dollars later my hair looked much better when I arrived than when I left. I heard of this place from a coworker and decided to get my first curly haircut with them. I had to fill a form online with all my information and then was called fairly quickly to schedule an appointment. The appointment itself however was about 2 months out! Yes! That's how busy they are! The salon itself is gorgeous and the design aesthetics are just gorgeous. Upon arrival a staff showed me around the salon and it's varied spaces. My appointment was with Robin, the owner and she is simply wonderful! She took time to get to know me, hair routine and inquired extensively about my hair expectations. Through my whole cut and style process I was talked to and lessoned.. this is a first for me. By the end of it I was rocking some gorgeous curls! Robin provided all steps and products used on my hair in a folder to take with. I was also given an opportunity to buy the products and I didn't feel they were pressuring me to buy. Where to even begin? In short, this was a complete life changing experience and worth every single cent! Also, can I be best friends with my stylist? That was the most fun 3 hours I've had in a long time! I am that girl who always hated going to get my hair done; hours in a chair isn't my idea of a good time. I cannot put into words how much I would of paid for the experience and vast amount of learning I got from this 3 hour appointment. I wish I had done this from day one and saved on all the products I spent hours reading about online. And I am not the type of person that EVER thought products made that big of a difference. WRONG! I came in for the very first time a couple of weeks ago and had an appointment with Christina. My appointment from start to finish was delightful. I like the aesthetics of the salon. It isn't pretentious but instead very welcoming. Its is also quite clean which is a plus. I appreciated the tour before we started the actual hair portion of the service. We started with a consultation to learn more about my hair struggles, my haircare routine and what I wanted to achieve from my visit. The first haircut here is too expensive but I decided to try them anyway. I've been going to curly hair salons in the metro area since 2019 so these guys aren't that special. It took 2 people to give my super short hair an acceptable cut and the products for styling had to be washed out after the first application because they were too heavy for my type of hair and my hair looked awful. So I was washed again, dried, cut again and styled with less product, dried again while the stylist struggled trying to coax a stubborn wave. I have to say, she was determined to make me happy at this point. After three hours just for a cut on my short hair, I left exhausted. My hair did look nice but not worth the cost or time. And I left still needing color on my roots which they wouldn't do. read more

Thanks Robin! I'm officially in love with my hair and vow to return to heat styling 1 or twice a year). Must admit I was extremely nervous about getting a diva cut. Robin and the whole staff made me extremely comfortable. They explained every step from cut, products used and how to apply the products. Robin took time to explain how much needed to be cut but allowed me to decide how much to cut. Well, I agreed to cut as she suggested. In the end, I loved the cut but wasn't to thrilled about the style. The solution to the style, instead wearing my weight on the right side, I have to wear it on the left. Basically, parting my hair on the right instead of the left. I've received so many compliments and friends reminding me this is how they remember my hair just longer. I got a phone call Saturday morning from a really empathetic girl and scheduled for Tuesday. Went in and Beth was AMAZING. Spending hours and hundreds of dollars in a salon is not my idea of a good time. However, if you have anything but straight hair and you've had enough of fighting it, Southern Curl is amazing. The owner, Robin, has curly hair and all the other stylists have a level of curl from wavy to extremely coiled. Everyone looks fantastic. I have been straightening my hair with various products and heat tools for years. When I've tried to wear it natural, I've ended up with an unflattering clump of frizz. Southern Curl only does curly hair and they have worked out a method of styling with detailed instructions for the client to take home. It is nothing like any "curl specialist" I've ever been to, and I've seen several over the years, always going back to the flatiron and blow dryer - which is hard on my fine hair and impossible to keep in Atlanta's high humidity. I can go outdoors on a damp, drizzly day and my hair improves. I've only had two cuts at this salon and am scheduled for a third. The damaged, dyed hair has all been cut off. There is a learning curve in using products properly and letting the natural curl find it's own way. Southern Curl is unique. Edit: I've now had my third cut in 6 months. I was taken aback because it was really short. Not a buzz cut or a pixie, but definitely a short haircut. In my past experience, I needed extra length to allow for it to curl up, especially in rainy weather. I left the salon $324 poorer and feeling unattractive. In addition to the cut, I had some kind of special treatment. They charge for styling in addition to a cut or trim, which is not what I'm used to. I had always gotten color, cut and blowout in one appointment. Of course now I only have to come in every 3 months and don't get highlights and root touch up, so the cost is about the same over a year. It's much nicer not having to go every 3-4 weeks and sit in the chair for hours. Anyway, as I said, I wasn't feeling good when I left the salon. There's nothing that can be done when a cut is too short except wait. Strange thing, though, about two days later, I thought, "Wow, there is something good going on!" My face looks "lifted" and my eyes look bigger, even without makeup. I look younger! I have been getting compliments every time I leave the house, too, from friends, acquaintances, and strangers, something that has never happened. My hair is almost no care. I don't have to do anything except wash, condition and use a couple of moisture holding, anti-frizz products, and let it dry naturally. No styling tools. I looked at my basket of scrunchies, clips and headbands. I will donate them. Along with hairpins that I can put away. This is very freeing. I ditched my purses a while back with a phone case that has a slot for ID, mobile payments, and my keys hooked to my belt loop; and now I don't need hair tools. Getting to be a free woman in my senior years! I highly recommend Robin at Southern Curl, and from the looks of it, all the other stylists there are top-notch. They keep up with current COVID protocols, and the styling booths are well-separated for privacy and safety. After about a year of ditching the flatiron, I FINALLY caved and made an appt to chop off all the damage. To say that I was nervous was an understatement, you don't even want to know how long it's been since I've had a professional haircut. And plus, for someone who is going to travel 5 hours for a haircut, you know it's serious, haha. Yes, there were closer stylists who are deva certified, but I went to Robin for a reason. Bottom line, she (and her staff) were amazing and made me feel so welcome! From the time I walked up to the door (my name was on their 'Welcome' sign, haha) to the time I left, I was treated like I was their only client. The first 10-15 minutes we sat and chatted like old friends, ummm, I've never had that before with a haircut. I told her my current routine and concerns, products I'm using, and all that good stuff. It was nice to lay the foundation before starting anything. The only negative is that they're so far away from me....major sad face. But that's not even their fault so it doesn't count. Pretty awesome...shows that she respects other stylists enough, and her own clients, to work with what might be a better option for next time. The inside of the salon is gorgeous. I am all about that "Chip & Joanna Gaines" farmhouse look, and they've got that nailed. So beautiful. It was nice and open, and felt like home. Felt like a place I could just hang out in all day. And they've got snacks/drinks for you too if needed! I'm a foodie, so even though I came prepared and brought my own food/drink, I was still excited, haha. During the wash/style portion, she gives you a mirror so you can basically watch everything she's doing step-by-step, so you can re-create the look on your own. She also gives you a little folder of the same info as well. Hopefully I can nail the outcome like she did. Overall I am extremely happy with everything. Yes, you'll pay a little more and yes, it was farther than I'd prefer, but curly hair can be a beast and you get what you pay for!!! I NEVER write reviews, but this salon literally changed my life. If I could give this salon 1,000,000 stars I would!!! I have VERY curly hair and my entire life it has usually been a frizzy mess. No one in my immediate family has hair like mine, so needless to say I've fumbled through my hair routine for as long as I can remember. Not anymore. This was a crash course in curl care 101 - and these ladies know what they're doing because they have curly hair too! It was so incredibly refreshing to sit in a salon with women (and men) sitting right next to me with similar struggles all walking out with huge smiles on their faces. Your average salon can't do what Southern Curl does. They'll try to make you fight your natural hair texture instead of working with what you already have (which is beautiful!!). I have been here about four times before and have gotten hair cuts from two different people. Both were good and I was mostly satisfied with my haircut, but I did not know what I was missing until Beth cut my hair. I needed to cut my hair short which is always scary for me because one layer too many and I look crazy. I booked with Beth and she literally gave me the best short curly hair cut of my life. I'm reviewing this after months of rocking it because I wanted to make sure it wasn't just the way I was styling it. It looks great even now that it's growing out. Not to mention that all the ladies that work there are really nice and sweet. I don't feel pressured at all and they are always helpful. Highly recommend! read more

I love their focus on hair care, which makes the style so much easier to maintain. The salon is beautiful with great energy. Diamond is an amazing stylist to work with. It's so clear they put their clients first in every way. It's pricey though! All in all, I enjoyed it, my hair is in much better condition, I know more about my curls and how to maintain them. An ideal salon for curly hair folks. Staff is very knowledgeable about cutting curly hair and customer service is great. They also have an excellent variety of curly hair product lines to try. My only issue is their pricing. . . a little on the high side in my opinion. However, I realize quality staff, service, and products do not come cheap. read more

I had a curl specific haircut with Jasmine and it was a wonderful experience. My last haircut was close to two years ago. She took the time to get to know me and my hair goals. She asked how much I'd be comfortable losing and we didn't go beyond that. She also spent a lot of time showing me the techniques to get soft, frizz-free, curls. I also really appreciate how much time was spent showing me products and trying them out on my hair. She let me see how they feel and judge between products. Now that I've done my first refresh I can see where I'd like to make more changes to my products. Also with all the techniques she showed me my hair looks amazing. I recently decided to treat myself to my first curly cut. I missed an opportunity to go to Ouidad in NYC, so when I moved to Atlanta, Southern Curl it was. Yes, the cuts are pricey. But since it was my first time, and compared with NYC prices, I figured it was fine. If you happen to like this place, the prices do drop significantly for future cuts. My stylist was Jodi, and I really enjoyed my time with him. He's super sweet and funny - talks you through the process and educates you while he entertains you. I found him really charming and disarming, which surprised this please-don't-talk-to-me New Yorker. As instructed, I brought a Longchamp full of every single hair product I have in my house, and he took me through every single one to see if it was approved! At the end, you get a folder with your specific hair care routine including what products to use, how to use them, and in what order. The one thing I didn't love about the cut, which I think is just a DevaCut thing - my hair looked AMAZING when I was done. In fact, multiple people at work got a haircut the following couple of weeks because of how great I looked. But two weeks later when I needed to straighten my hair for a wedding, the bottom 2 inches of my hair were FRIED. It looked horrible. So the cut was more about making each curl look good, and maybe not enough on making sure my *hair* overall was healthy. I was here for a long time - since it was a pamper day I didn't mind. I ended up falling in love with the InnerSense organic line, which is hard to find anywhere but online. Their hydrating cream conditioner and sweet spirit leave in conditioner are hair life savers. As this is a small local business, it's definitely run half casually half seriously. That means that everyone is nice and friendly, but I also get random emails reinforcing "THE RULES," even when I don't have an appointment (unnecessary). That also means you can message them on Instagram, but your conversation might never be completed after the last "let me get back to you." So you kindof have to roll with the punches and be sure to follow the rules, but also follow-up. Overall, would recommend and would return. read more

I have no complaints. You have to go and experience it yourself!!! I did the curl discovery with Robin on their anniversary celebration and I still was treated timely and effectively. She guided me through my own process when I get home so I can do it myself and I believe the pictures speak for itself. I will update when I follow up next month. Yes it's pricey and the products as well, but it's worth every penny!!! Go see Robin, Christina, Beth and the whole team you won't be disappointed. An incredible salon experience! Hands down the BEST customer service I have ever had while getting my hair done. The entire staff were very friendly, the space was welcoming and very clean, the covid safety practices were reassuring, and the products were high quality. I have never had a stylist explain to me exactly what they were doing AND educate me about the complexity of caring for curly hair, with tips for what to do at home. They give you a hand mirror during your wash so you can follow along with the process! Robin did my cut and Kendra styled me, and their teamwork ensured that I left with an adorable cut with curl definition that I've never had before. I will definitely be back. read more

I went to Robin and she was amazing. She listened to me, she asked questions, she educated me. I've never left a salon with a better understanding of my hair. It is pricey but worth the $$ because of the treatments and the education you get. My mission was to get a really cute shape and keep the length and she did just that. gosh - this salon has changed my hair completely! I cannot lie - it is pricey... but I find it worth every cent. Christina was my stylist/consultant and she was perfect. first she walked me through what was going to happen, explained everything in detail and then helped me understand why the products I was using were not working they way I hoped. Then the cut, treatments and style, through everything she kept handing my little mirror so I could see exactly what she is doing, what product she is using and how much of it - this was in addition to her constant explaining.... I went to Southern about 3 months ago and I didn't want to write a review until I saw the real results of the products and the advice that I was given. If I could give this salon more than 5 stars I would - I have been following the curl-scription Christina gave me and my hair is thick, full, moisturised and healthy with the most amazing curls I have ever been able to achieve on my own. I have not used heat on my hair since I saw her and it shows! I am constantly getting compliments on my hair now. I recommend this salon 100%. read more
