This spot used to be Southern Grist, and it still has the same cool vibe with plenty of seating and its own parking lot. I absolutely love their PB & Beer, where I tried it at a tasting event at the Zoo and had to come back for a few cans. This location is now XUL but they have some of the Souther Grist brews. Staff is fantastic. I didn't get the bar person's name but he was awesome! Lots of great seating indoors and outdoors. They have a great selection of beers and offer a food menu. TI tried the Hoppy Crisp and got a BLT sandwich. The pours and food were both very fresh. The service was very attentive. If you love creative craft beer, Southern Grist Brewing Co. is simply Amazing! I've been drinking their inventive, boundary-pushing beers for years and they consistently produce some of the best sours anywhere. Now that Southern Grist has been acquired by XUL Beer Company in Knoxville another Amazing brewery I've visited several times and watched grow. This feels like two epic forces coming together. Think of it like two legendary bands collaborating on a "Greatest Hits Mixtape." I can't wait to see what comes next from this powerhouse combo! Today I went with a couple of flights and here's how it shook out: Engywook - Wild stuff. The cinnamon and nutmeg absolutely jump out at you. A small taster was perfect for me it's definitely a conversation starter. PG&J Mixtape: Grape - This is my jam (literally). So good. Sweet, nostalgic, perfectly balanced. In my opinion, one of the best in the country. Freezes & Hoverboards - Solid beer, well made, just not my personal favorite of the lineup. Peach Black Currant Strawberry Hill - Very good. Big, layered fruit flavor with great depth. Strawberry Delight Hill - Sooooo good! This is a must-have. Bright, flavorful, and dangerously easy to drink. Peanut Butter Copra - A stout with peanuts and a hint of toasted coconut. Let this one warm up a bit and the flavors really open up. Rich and smooth. Batch One Theory: 10th Anniversary Stout - Very good anniversary brew. I caught a subtle barleywine note blending into the stout character -- complex and interesting. Overall, this is a great place to sample some seriously creative beers. Plenty of space to sit inside or out, relax, and work your way through a flight. If you're a fan of bold flavors and breweries that aren't afraid to experiment, this is your spot. read more

Ben was pretty excited to try Southern Grist Brewing while we were in town. We went to the location closest to where we currently worked and they had plenty of drink options and also mentioned that their other locations would have different ones as well as they had sold out of some earlier that day. I do have to say the one thing that I love about traveling and I'm going to different breweries, is that we get to go there during the week during business hours. Where it is not as busy, so we have more of an opportunity to sit wherever we want and enjoy the space in surroundings that they have the offer. Southern Grist Brewing in East Nashville is a gem tucked just off Ellington Parkway on Douglas Avenue. If East Nashville isn't your thing, you can find their other location in The Nations. Southern Grist is your quintessential "small batch" brewery that offers up an ever-evolving lineup of beers, which is fantastic if you love variety. While they don't have a flagship brew, they do maintain a few staples that are consistently on tap. Just be prepared that your favorite brew might be a seasonal, here today and gone tomorrow *sad face* The brewery's kitchen, now rebranded as By Lauter, is another highlight. Though I haven't explored the full menu, the burger is easily one of my favorites in the city! Grab a crisp beer and pair it with this burger - you won't be disappointed! Parking can be a tad tricky at times. They have limited spots on the side and a lot behind the building, but during peak times you may have to find a spot in a nearby neighborhood. The space itself is cozy but accommodating. With a dining room area, a square bar with stools, and scattered tables, there's plenty of seating. Plus, there are two outdoor spaces that blend seamlessly with the indoor area, making for a pleasant atmosphere year-round. Service is always solid, the food is delicious, and the beer is always interesting and well-crafted. My husband and I love a good brewery, especially those that are dog friendly. Came here while on the waitlist to be seated for a nearby restaurant. We opted for a few sample pours (at 5oz you can try more than one while still drinking responsibly) and small bites. We ordered 6 different beers and the fries with truffle and Parmesan. The batter on the fries is extra crispy and served super warm. When paired with the dill aioli and a cold beer it's just... mmm chefs kiss! We enjoyed all of the beers, but our favorites were peach blueberry cobbler, and coconut stacks on stacks. They sell 16 oz cans in 4 packs or singles to mix and match. We ended up bringing a few for home, but they didn't last long! Will be back on another day off. read more

I can't believe this was my first time at the East Nashville southern grist! It is so cute in here! I love their perch too! I went for dinner and got a Caesar salad and a side of fries. The Caesar salad is HUGE for sure you can share! It is heavy on the dressing so if you like a lighter salad definitely ask for the dressing on the side. The fries were those really good ones that have the best salt on them. I could've eaten them plain with that salt but they had an aioli that was to die for. Definitely asking for a second side of that when I go back, I didnt try any beer this time, but Ill be back soon enough for more patio time! We went to the Douglas Ave. location in Nashville. I had been searching for a local brewery similar to Two Tides in Savannah, GA. The beers we tried were delicious. Service, overall, was pretty good, except for one rude, unpleasant server behind the bar. We didn't catch his name (definitely wasn't Mike, the manager, who was GREAT) but some tall dude who can stand to take a course in customer service. If you don't like working with the public - leave! I stopped by Southern Grist Brewing for a Sunday lunch, and it did not disappoint! While I don't drink alcohol, I had the HOP water, which was refreshing and unique. My husband and his friend all had beers and said they were delicious while they watched sports. I went with a gluten-free option and had the burger without the bun--it was fantastic, juicy, and packed with flavor. The Caesar salad was another highlight; it's gluten-free and comes with Parmesan croutons that are absolutely to die for. SGB is well on its way to becoming my favorite spot in East Nashville to grab a brew. I love everything from the modern vibes to the taplist ... not to mention the delicious and innovative menu at Lauter. I recently visited Southern Grist with a group of friends on a Tuesday night, and I appreciate that there was a wide variety of brews available, with something for everyone to enjoy. I'm in my "Sour Era," and Southern Grist has quite a few fun ones on tap right now. My favorite is the 'Mosa, which is not too sour, but still packs a bunch of citrusy flavor. If you're unsure whether you want to commit to a full pint of something, I love that SGB offers 5 oz. taster pours for $3-4. I tried both the Passion Fruit Guava Hill and the Perpetual Composition, both of which were tasty and very fruit forward, but strong if you're not typically a sour person. My husband ordered the Masa Crisp, which may be our new favorite lager. It's light and sippable, while still full of a corn-like flavor. We also ordered a taster of the White Chocolate Pistachio Stacks on Stacks, which was a fun dark beer to end the evening on. Although the patio can get busy on weekends, SGB is the perfect spot for locals to stop during the week for a few brews and a tasty bite. I have no doubt that we'll be back again soon! read more

Okay, so I last reviewed Southern Grist in 2017. And I'm sure I went a few more times after that since I didn't leave Nashville until 2021. But a few weekends ago, I wanted to grab a few beers with some family after a wedding. We said, "Let's go to Southern Grist; it's nearby!" And it's a good thing that I left Nashville so long ago that I forgot how to get there and had to put into Google Maps, because THEY MOVED! It's larger and cooler and they have great food now. So - yes - they still have great beers, including the ones I referred to as "BOMB sours" in 2017. But now they have the same great beers but are ever better. That's all. Stopped here on a whim when we arrived to Nashville. There is lots of seating inside and outside as well as bar seats. You walk up and order any drinks/food you may want and then find a table. The bar tender was nice and let us try a few beers. I ordered a sour beer, blueberry peach cobbler, it was great! And I also ordered the Cesar salad fries- the ultimate girl dinner. It tasted like a Taco Bell potato taco. 3. We probably won't eat here again but it's the best place to drink and play games. CAVEAT BEING if they brought back the chicken sandwich. 4. The vibe is spectacular especially a little later in the night. This was our third time time here. The first time ordering food, and the second time sitting at the bar. Beer - 5/5. They offer many more sours than most around here, which is a win for the hubs. Highly recommend the Mosa, Broconut, Chop It Up and the collab with Chopper. Food - 3/5. And only bc the sourdough focaccia brought up the curve. That is an easy 6/5. The burger and fried chicken sandwich were both subpar. Both came drowning in their respective sauces. Service - 1/5. It's terrible. Sure, when you actually can get someone to pay attention to you, they're friendly enough. But all three times we've been here we've experienced no one seeming interested in actually acknowledging us or taking our order, and not one of those times has the place been more than 50% full. Our FAVORITE in Nashville! We visited the one located on Douglas street, East Nashville. These guys are KILLING it. They have an absolutely amazing beer menu and they even have "milk pours". Milk Pours are pretty cool as they tell you that you typically have to shoot them in one drink. The Milk pour is a method of pouring that results in you drinking less beer but feeling far less heavy afterwards. The creaminess of the beer went down so smoothly! They also have regular pour of course. This location also has Lauter which is a fantastic place at the back where you can order the best of food. I still dream about that mushroom burger and their spicy chicken sandwich. read more

Cute spot. Ended up here after trying two places across the street that weren't officially open yet, but this had been on my list. I actually didn't have any beers, but I'll be back to try some. I had the breakfast sandwich and our table split the potatoes. I felt the food was very overpriced for brunch. Yes it's good and apparently there's an executive chef, but $16 for a breakfast sandwich seems outrageous when others charge under $10 and it wasn't the best I've had. My biggest concern was I'm pretty sure it was slathered in mayo and that wasn't on the menu, or else I would have asked for none or picked something else. That made me take off half the croissant/biscuit. Potatoes were seasoned well, we all enjoyed them. The chicken and waffle looked good. I'd avoid getting brunch here again but maybe the bar food is more on par pricing wise. I'll try the beers again and come back to enjoy the taproom. read more

Southern Grist makes some of the best beer anywhere, IMO. The Canela Oscuro stout (when you can find it), is the best Mexican chocolate stout I've had. Please make more! Insert Juicy Pun is the best NE IPA in its class. There's as much good going on here as any other brewery has, and then some. That said, we all make mistakes...Posh Palapa. Look it up. On my unofficial ranking scale of the culture of their beer with a 1 being most traditional and a 10 being toasted coconut cherry cream pale stout: I would give this place an 8! They have some pretty wild creations here, while also having some Dad friendly lawnmower lagers, much appreciated! This review isn't going to be very detailed because this was my last stop at the end of a day of, uh, "brewery tourin'". Unlike some other breweries in Nashville: tasting, sampling, and flights are not only allowed here, they are encouraged! I got a flight of various lagers, after sampling a few different beers that looked interesting. All were good! I would say the beers on tap here are very diverse: hoppy beers, lagers, sour beers, dark beers...they definitely have a beer for every taste! read more

This is for the East Nashville taproom location. Nice brewery with both in-door and outside seating. We did a tasting flight. The stand out was the TEAL (5.8% ABV): a approachable New England IPA brewed with barley, wheat, flaked oats, and hopped with Citra, Mosaic, and Rakau. Plenty of juice flavor, but balanced. Sours are not our thing, but they have many of them. We were also impressed by the Canela Oscuro (6.7% ABV): a stout was made with real cinnamon, vanilla beans, cacao nibs, and dried chili peppers. The chili wasn't hot, but the combination of flavors was pretty amazing. Service was great. Tho I'm not sure why we were both carded. They have an impressive looking food menu too, which unfortunately we didn't have time to try, but next time we're in town we will for sure check that out. read more

While it does seem normal at many of the Nashville breweries, I appreciate the taster (5oz) glasses. It let me try all the variety of drinks. I tried six different beers, and variety of styles and all good. Typically I just go for hoppy and dark, but since I was trying variety I did try some of the different sours. The Perpetual composition and Chcolate covered chery melted sno-cone were both delicious and probably my favorite while I was here. IPAs were solid, stouts slightly better and really enjoyable. The food, the wings there were 3. Quite large, seasoned and fried it has good flavor. I'm not sure I like the 3 piece wing though. Kale salad, a nice dressing flavor but I think I need the kale chopped just a bit more. And lastly, the sweet and salty snack mix is plentiful and enjoyable. read more

Hubby and I were on our way to dinner when we got stuck waiting on the train. He looked left and saw Southern Grist Brewing. Next thing you know we were ordering a beer. I tried the marshmallow peanut butter blueberry jelly hill - amazing. All the flavors really came through nicely. Marshmallowy PB & J flavor, fruity without too much sweetness. This is a tough one because I like everything about this Southern Grist location except for the prices. I'm not new to breweries and the prices of their food/beer. In fact, according to my wife, I spend too much time at breweries. I give the food, beer, and location/ambiance 5-stars. The prices get 1-star. We just ate/drank here last night and were shocked by the high prices. BEER We had four beers at $10 each. That is just too much. Let me explain why... most comparable breweries charge $8 (at the high end). Additionally, if you buy a 4-pack to-go, it costs $5ea ($20 for the 4-pack). Why double the price to pour the same beer into a glass? There certainly aren't any aluminum costs to put it into a glass. Forgettabout the tipping as well. You get the point. FOOD I ordered a smoked jaegerwurst which came with a TINY bit of shishito peppers that were pickled (not the grilled kind, more of the jarred kind), and three tiny bread rolls. It also came with a spot of mustard. Basically a bratwurst for $18. Ouch! MERCH Me and my buddies buy each other brewery shirts from all over the world. For my family that live abroad, I bought a couple of shirts. Another ouch! The t-shirt was $25 and the long sleeve t-shirt was $30. Damn! Aren't I advertising for you, Southern Grist, when I take these shirts out into the wild? All that to say, I will likely go to other breweries in the area going forward. The prices are just too high here. TLDR; $10 for beers, $18 for a jaegerwurst, $25 for a t-shirt. Just too expensive for my taste. read more
