I would not recommend staying at this hotel. Upon arrival, the front desk attendant was repeatedly hacking and coughing and appeared visibly ill. It was not the first impression I expected when checking into a hotel. Unfortunately, the room itself was also disappointing. The carpet was dirty, there was an old cough drop and a granola bar underneath the bed, and the air vent blew dust into the room when it turned on. These issues made me question how thoroughly the room had been cleaned before our stay. To make matters worse, there was a wedding taking place at the hotel, and the reception appeared to be directly outside our room. The music was extremely loud and continued until around 9:30 p.m. Traveling with a small child, this made bedtime difficult and significantly impacted our experience. The restaurant experience was equally frustrating. I ordered chicken tenders for my child, but they arrived covered in a spicy buffalo-style sauce, making them inedible for a young child. I charged the meal to my room and only discovered several days later, after requesting an itemized receipt, that a 22% tip charge had been added. I was never informed of this 22% tip charge when ordering. When I called to ask about it, the manager explained that the 22% charge was for room service tip. However, the food was never delivered to my room. I was required to walk to the restaurant and pick it up myself. While I didn't mind retrieving the food, I do mind being charged a substantial tip for a service that wasn't provided. To make matters worse, my hands were full carrying three drinks and a bag of food back to the room, and one of the overfilled drinks spilled along the way. I also spoke directly with the hotel manager regarding the 22% tip charge. I explained that I was never informed ahead of time that this charge would be added and that the food was not actually delivered to my room. Instead, I had to walk to the restaurant and pick it up myself. The manager did not seem concerned that I was being charged what was described as a room service fee without receiving traditional room service. What bothered me most was not just the charge itself, but the lack of transparency and the apparent unwillingness to acknowledge why a guest might find that frustrating. If they had actually delivered the food themself I would have tipped more. The combination of the dirty room, excessive noise, unexpected charges, and poor dining experience made for a very disappointing stay. I would not stay here again and would not recommend either the hotel or the restaurant. read more

Such a great stay at The Southern Hotel -- truly a hidden gem! The vibes are unique and charming, with beautiful decor and a relaxed atmosphere. We loved the bar drinks and the super cute, safe street it's located on. Parking was easy, and our room was surprisingly spacious -- perfect for the kids to spread out after a long drive. As recent guests at The Southern Hotel in Covington, LA we visited the lounge. We were a part of one of the three events being celebrated at the hotel that Saturday evening. The place was packed, to say the least. Melissa Thrash, bartender, and Christopher Walker, manager, made my husband and I feel like we were the only customers. They showed genuine interest in our travels and they were always patient when talking with us. They also shared information on drinks to try. We were at the lounge for several hours and the fantastic customer service did not lessen. Go visit Melissa and Chris. I am positive you will have a similar experience. read more

I can say the overall manager, John, I think it is, was responsive to our needs and concluded our business satisfactorily. Be more considerate when people who are 5 minutes early for their set times by making everyone not certain people cut lines . I had such a great experience staying here. My room had a massive tub and great shower and the bedroom set up was great. I loved the record player in the room. It was a nice touch. It was in one of the suites upstairs, I even had what felt like a small balcony. It was cold when I was there, so I didn't swim but the setup seems so peaceful, it doesn't feel like it's in Covington. read more

I've been going to the Cypress Bar for years. The hotel and bar area are beautiful. It has a great ambiance, but when the bar is crowded, good luck getting a drink. This has been an ongoing issue of frustration. Last night was the last straw: May 1, 2025. The bar was packed and had to wait 45 minutes for a beer. This is not the first time this has happened, but it will be the last time for me. We finally complained and only got lip (very rude young lady) from the bartender. They other bartender said they would comp our drinks. We weren't interested in comped drinks, we were interested in a drink. If Cypress is busy, I would turn around and go somewhere else. There are plenty of other options within walking distance and thats what I will be doing from here on. read more

My husband had a surprise amenity waiting for me upon arrival and there was a lovely note attached from the hotel. The Southern Hotel checked in to make sure all of our needs were being met while staying. We ordered room service and it was delicious! Have stayed here multiple times over the past years for work only. The hotel is always clean and the rooms are a good size and the beds are comfortable. The bathrooms are large and always clean. The hotel is a historic hotel I believe. The meeting room that we are in is nice but always cold. Bring a coat for meetings. The bar is open everyday I believe and serves some finger food in the evenings. I have not tried the restaurant but there is one attached the hotel. The hotel is in walking distance of a few bars and restaurants in the area. There is also a coffee house just a few blocks down that's great. Overall a nice place to stay when in Covington. read more

Terrific renovation, but it is all downhill from there. Aside from two cans of water, the rooms have none of the amenities found in a chain motel. No coffeemaker, no refrigerator. TV doesn't work because they have DirectTV, which is in a contract dispute with some outfit called Tegna, which sounds like a psoriasis medication but is actually a spinoff of Gannett. The much-publicized Gloriette restaurant is closed on Sunday evenings, a material fact not mentioned on the web site. I had to eat a hamburger in the noisy, overcrowded bar, and I have never waited so long for a hamburger. Oh, and there's no reception area near the entrance, so be prepared to schlep your own luggage. At their prices, it's all pretty ridiculous. read more

I was there recently for a weekend MasterMind retreat with the incomperable Courtney Elmer. It was an AMAZING weekend! Ok, so the hotel is super easy to get to and is INCREDIBLY beautiful and charming! Parking was so easy and I loved every part! When I checked in that morning my room was ready to go. The front desk staff was so sweet and helpful. They had a gift from my host ready for me! That was so amazing! I went to my room and it was just so inviting! It was beautiful! I toured my room like a kid in a candy store. It could just have been since I had a room all to myself, but it was sooo good. The meeting room we used was the Olympia room. It was full of just beautiful artwork, the chairs were so comfy, and the ephemera from the Krewe of Olympia was a joy to see. The gentle giant who handled our catering was so sweet to us! He would come in so quietly and respectfully during our sessions. He made sure we had plenty of ice, water, tea, hot water, coffee, and the food - well, the food was so healthy and delicious. We had salads with fresh dressings, breads, fruit plates, and it was always so pretty! Just beautiful. The bar was really good. It is quite loud in the bar and lobby area in the evenings, but the SH is the PLACE TO BE in Covington! Bar has table service that was so attentive - it was VERY easy to get a drink. As loud as the bar is, when you go to your room, you hear NOTHING! Not even the people next to you! And I was on the ground floor. Others in my group also said that upstairs they heard nothing. We even did yoga in the Sun Room while there were plenty of people at the bar and even outside and it didn't even mess with our vibe. The SH does an amazing job with that. And speaking of bedtime - that bed is SUPER comfy! A combo of different pillows on the bed made me an awesome nest to sleep in. I didn't eat at the restaurant at the hotel, but did hit a couple of places within walking distance - Toad Hollow and La Luna. They were both REALLY good. Overall, I love this hotel and really looking forward to another retreat very soon. read more

Stayed here last night for a different experience from chain hotels. It was incredible! I read some other reviews online that gave me some reservations and I have absolutely no complaints!! The room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. Yes there is a thermostat on the wall for you to control the climate in your own. They even had portable ac units in hallways to battle the southern heat. Pool is small but quaint and cooled me off and they provide towels. The restaurant was good and the bar was bustling and had a great selection of top end liquors for all tastes. Every one was so nice! I will definitely stay again in the future. read more

Clean but very noisy, I had a hard time sleeping and was awakened early after dosing off a bit. People come here to party not to sleep. Bathroom doesn't have a counter or any space for your stuff. No dresser for your clothes. The TV remote didn't work. The A/C system can only semi be set. I like to be cool at night and couldn't turn the temperature down. Overall, it is ok if you don't mind not sleeping and being hot. I was here for a wedding, but would NEVER choose to stay here otherwise. read more

A hotel that embodies the phrase putting lipstick on a pig. We booked the "Deluxe King" room which did not include a coffee maker, fridge, ceiling lights, or friendly service. The room had only 3 lamps and was next to the parking lot that had flood lights that shone into the room all night. The TV is so old that my computer wouldn't connect to it to watch normal streaming channels. In the morning construction started at 9am which was so loud I couldn't hear my husband and then the smell of chemicals started coming in. The manager also was so unreasonable that they only would cancel our next night but wouldn't do more than 15% off the night before which was horrible. Do not recommend. You are better off in a different hotel where they actually care about their rooms and not just their lobby decor. read more

In October of 2018, my husband and I were married at the Southern Hotel. We were not local to the area and had just relocated so we did not know what venues to consider. Based on the recommendation of someone at our gym/spa, we went to a bridal showcase at the Southern Hotel. We looked into a few other venues and decided we wanted an intimate wedding with only immediate family and a few local friends since most of our friends and family were out of state. After the bridal showcase we met with the event coordinator, Danielle. From day one she was very organized, succinct, and my wedding's guardian angel. Danielle took care of coordinating with me, all the vendors, and the hotel staff. She made some wonderful recommendations that, in the end, saved me a lot of time, energy and money. Please do not misunderstand me. The Southern Hotel is a higher end venue, and it is by no means one of the cheaper venues in the area, but you really do get what you pay for here and it is well worth the cost which, in my opinion, was very reasonable. The food was amazing. Oxlot 9 has an amazing chef and they also do a wonderful brunch. Thanks to Danielle, I also went to the brunch there and found the band, Bad Penny, who played at our reception. The setting of the hotel was perfect, and the decorated courtyard is the perfect setting for a reception. We even did a cocktail reception the night before in the sunroom for friends and family coming from out of town, coordinated by Danielle and myself, and it was perfect. I also like the fact that they had a contingency plan for weather. We had the ceremony in the courtyard, dinner in the sunroom off the ballroom, and then the reception and cake in the courtyard. Danielle did have the ballroom set aside as a backup just in case it rained. I could not recommend a better spot for an event and the ease of planning made it the best choice around. read more

We're currently in the room and finding it impossible to get comfortable. If the hotel wasn't so beautiful, it would get one star. read more
