Had a really nice stay at The Southern Hotel. Very good customer service and clean hotel with a modern look, yet still holding its historical quirks and design. The lobby always had a nice smelling candle burning, which added an extra little touch of luxury. Loved the outdoor space with the small pool, but wish there was a drink service that accommodated guests while at the pool. read more

We were in town and stayed here for a wedding. We came in on Friday for a midday wedding on Saturday. The reception was held at this hotel. It is a beautiful hotel but the property is not prepared to handle a moderate sized reception. The reception ended by 7pm and the party continued at the hotel bar. The bar area is small and quaint but acoustically very noisy. The bar staff was not very accommodating to their guests, it seemed that they were more interested in cutting people off and closing the bar early to get on with their own agenda and plans for their evening. Complaints were made to the front desk staff, however, she was not prepared or capable of handling the situation and there was no management on property to take care of this. If you are looking at this hotel for an event, I would reconsider or demand to have a manager on property during your event. And to top it off the in room WiFi does not work read more

I was thrilled to know that someone had restored the old Southern Hotel! I grew up in Covington and now live in the Houston area. This hotel will definitely be my "go-to" hotel when visiting home from now on. It's obvious as soon as you walk through the door how much love was put into renovating this beautiful old hotel. Every detail was given the utmost attention. Superb job in bringing this old beauty back to its former grandeur. Loaded with history. Not to mention the bed felt like floating on a cloud! My husband stayed here on a business trip and said it is the nicest hotel he has ever stayed in. We have stayed in hotels all over the world so I was surprised to hear him rank this one so high. He loved the decor and the grand piano in the lobby with a pianist playing for the guests. He said from the outside you would never guess it looks the way it does on the inside. He liked it so much he is staying there again this week. He says it is very romantic and will be bringing me there on his next trip. read more

Southern Hotel and Cypress Bar in Covington- If anyone knows the owners of this establishment, I would love to bend their ear. This is a gorgeous place with an exquisite courtyard but their event staff, bar staff, and front desk staff leave so much to be desired. Hell I will even throw in a free workshop for them on event planning and staffing and customer service and satisfaction. Truly a disappointment. We Attended the Sunrise Sippin event on June 17, 2017 and we are so disappointed to have to scratch this venue off of our list of possible wedding venues. We went to this event to see if we should consider the Southern Hotel as a wedding venue. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!! The event started at 6pm according to all advertising and social media posts. We got there at 7pm and it was so packed, the wine for tasting was very near gone and there was not an available clean glass to be seen. Dirty glasses were everywhere and there was one waitress handling all of the patrons. The lady serving the wine seemed very frustrated and embarrassed that there were no glasses and asked the waitress for someone to bring out more clean glasses and she replied, "I'm taking care of EVERYONE out here (in the courtyard), in the lobby, and at the tables in the bar", and walked off. We decided to go to the bar to get a clean glass. The bar was packed all along the length of the bar at least 3 people and you could tell the 2 bartenders were not handling the volume well. We stood in line with approximately 20 other people searching for glasses waiting to get someone attention. Finally someone ahead of us asked for a clean glass, one of the bartenders said "sorry that's a separate event, we are not giving our glasses out for that event", and we were dismissed. I got very angry at the rude treatment and we went to the front desk to speak to the manager and the guy behind the desk couldn't handle a customer service problem if it slapped him in the face! I asked for the manager, the front desk guy proceeds to tell me without even lifting his head to look at me, that the manager is upstairs. I said "can you please tell him that a customer would like to see him. He says, "he is upstairs and he is not coming down anytime soon. WOW - WHAT A WAY TO RUN A BUSINESS! We walked back towards the bar and some NICE patrons had located some clean glasses from a cabinet in the lobby and they gave us 2 of the glasses that they found. We headed back over to the wine table for tasting and there were only 2 wines out of about 6 different kinds left to taste and only 2 sips of each to be had! ** If this facility and your staff cannot manage to plan adequately for 100 people, provide great customer service, and satisfaction at a small time event like this one, I WOULD BE SCARED TO LEAVE THE BIGGEST DAY IN OUR LIVES IN YOUR HANDS! So glad I was introduced to the Southern Hotel. It's one the best boutique hotels I've had the pleasure of visiting in this area. The reception area is just as charming as the staff; from the Miro Lago, the General Manager, to the bartender, Josh,who grew up in Covington. Even the elevator is simply Southern charming!! Surprised me each time the doors opened. The photos on Yelp do not do the Southern justice. It's updated, clean and the lush landscaping surrounding the outer spaces and pool areas. There's a nice restaurant attached and a few others within walking distance. We will be back!! read more

We are here with lots of people spending a lot of money celebrating newly weds. we were told that we couldn't submit another drink order because they were "clearly busy." I don't recommend that anyone celebrates any event here because they obviously do not respect a happy crowd. 1/5 do not recommend. AND NOW a party next to us is allowed to take all of the standing heaters and they don't get fussed at but we do. This is prejudice. read more

This review is addressing the bar at the Southern Hotel and not the hotel itself. We had dinner in Old Covington and wanted to have a drink and sit in the courtyard of the Southern Hotel. We stood at the bar for a very long time. Not once did anyone acknowledge we were there. It was not busy and actually most guest already had drinks. After waiting for 10-15 minutes for someone to even say hello, we just left without drinks. It was very disappointing and plain rude. Someone could have at least said they would be with us. There were 5-6 staff behind the bar just talking to each other and not paying attention to customers. This was our first impression and it was not good. How you treat your customers is important and the staff at the bar made it clear that they were more concerned about chatting among themselves than attending to people trying to order a drink. read more

My family & friends have brought each other to the Cypress Bar since the hotel reopened and we've have had only minor complaints (mainly regarding drink price increases) since then. For my 25th Birthday back in April, my five friends and I began the evening by sitting at the busy bar (there was a wedding that evening) only to overhear the two bartenders openly point at us and complain, "Oh great, look at this group of kids that just sat down- they're not going to tip us anything." Wait- what? Is this really happening right now? After receiving my drink, we were not acknowledged by the staff for the remainder of our time there. The two bartenders repeated to stand at the end of the bar while whispering and staring- even POINTING to us! After this, we finished our drinks and quickly left. I was most annoyed that I wasted part of my 25th birthday being mistreated from a business that I had spent the majority of that day giving praise. From the moment we sat at the bar, my friends and I were immediately judged for how young we appeared and our economic positions. Without being provoked, the bartenders were incredibly defensive and cold to us in their tone, attitude, and behavior. I'm also embarrassed for bringing my out-of-town friends here and have this experience be their first (and last) impression of The Southern Hotel. It's a shame that this experience had to tarnish my impression of this hotel so negatively- considering how close I live and how frequently I visited. (I literally work one block away!) The best part? The next day, I directly emailed the hotel's general manager about my experience with the bartender's name and never.heard.back. So yeah. My unresolved issues means I won't be returning. If I could leave a negative 2 stars, I would. read more

Stately Southern Satisfies The Southern Hotel is an old hotel recently and beautifully restored and reopened. There are still some service kinks to work out. But, overall, it is a very comfortable hotel. It is nice to stay in a hotel that doesn't look like every other hotel at the highway exit. There is a sense of history and charm at the Southern Hotel. The rooms were very pleasant. The bathrooms were large and beautifully designed. The only problems were that there really isn't sufficient lighting in the main room. There is small pool, really just good for lazing about in. We were told that there would be towels by the pool, but none could be found. The exercise room looks nice through the windows, but trying to find the way there is exercise enough. Breakfast really and truly is continental. There are small containers of yogurt, some little muffins that look straight from Sam's Club, coffee and juice. A little fresh fruit or some cold cereal would be a nice addition. There really isn't anywhere to eat breakfast. The choices are to take it back to the room or sit in the lobby. The staff members were all pleasant, but they still had the sense of figuring things out on the job. The Southern Hotel is a fine place to stay and will get better when they've had time to sort out some of the finer points. read more

Recently stayed at the Southern Hotel and it was absolutely a lovely hotel surrounded with southern charm and beauty. The (2) hotel receptionists were very helpful and friendly. I visited the upscaled bar and received excellent service. Do order the cheese tray at the bar! You will love it! The delightful ambiance was very inviting as I listened to a pianist nearby playing such beautiful music. The rooms are gorgeous, clean and comfortable along with a beautiful bathroom with a welcoming large shower. This is a first-rate high-class hotel of a superior quality - highly recommended! read more

What a gem! Stay here if you are in the Covington - Mandeville area. Lots of comfortable outside seating , the pool looked clean and inviting, the bar was nice and there was even a piano player on a Monday during the early evening. Finally a hotel that lives up to its pictures! read more

The front desk management and all of the bartenders are terrible at this upscale hotel which is severely disappointing considering amount of money spent of this beautiful renovation. The hotel management lacks customer service skills by avoiding customer complaints and not following up with hotel guests on issues that need resolving. The bartenders need to be re-trained or better yet, fired, as they believe their time is better spent chatting each other up instead of serving their overpriced drinks to paying customers. This is the third and last time we will be spending our money at this hotel. read more

My husband and I celebrated our 22nd wedding anniversary with a weekend at the Southern Hotel in downtown Covington. We invited friends to join us for dinner at the hotel's restaurant Ox Lot 9, and we were delighted with both the hotel and the restaurant. The room was surprisingly spacious and perfectly decorated. The bathroom felt like a spa. Every last detail was thought out for the guests. They even sent up champagne and a handwritten note of congratulations for our anniversary. We enjoyed the charming courtyard and the hotel bar before claiming our reservation in Ox Lot 9, where the staff put together an absolutely unforgettable meal, cocktails and service. Had a fantastic getaway to Covington the other night. Stayed for two nights and had a blast. The newly restored hotel looks amazing and has all the amenities one would expect to find. Enjoyed cocktails at the bar and lounging in the small pool on a hot summers day. The room was adorned with beautiful works of art and the bathroom was top notch. The whole place had captured the historic feel. Sad to say we missed dining in the hotel's main restaurant as we were there early in the week, but shall return. read more

We love introducing our out of town guests and family to this wonderful hotel. If they don't stay with us they book the Southern! The restaurant is great and there are several others only a short distance from the hotel. We have not personally stayed yet but have been to many events. Our guests have always said they enjoyed their stay and marvel at the inexpensive charge for the room. Many, both young and old, are world travelers that enjoy a unique, quality experience rather than the cookie-cutter chain hotels. We are proud to have this in our own back yard and love sharing the building's history. I find the complaints in the reviews odd but understand that a particular demographic may feel out of their element, especially in the bar. There are certainly many different types of establishments in Covington to serve all tastes. If you are looking for warm, Southern hospitality with great cuisine, you have found it here at Southern Hotel. read more

The event in question was overwhelmingly crowed but the staff worked really hard to be attentive and did so with a smile. Were there some problems? Sure. Glasses seemed in short supply, and there was no where to sit, but it seems like everyone who was anyone showed up on Saturday. This place is so amazing that when the wine ran out they poured free champagne!!! We were just blown away by the world class service. There was one superstar a tall skinny man with glasses who seemed like he was everywhere: pouring champagne, stocking glasses, talking to guests... We'd be in the bar, move to the courtyard and see this guy in both places, we thought he had a twin! Then we find out he's the manager!! I've never seen a manager do so much menial work and seem so happy about it. Now that is what I call service with a smile. All in all this place is local gem. We can't wait to go back! read more

This is a review for the Cypress Bar in the hotel. We had drinks and appetizers there last night and it was wonderful. Navon, one of the bartenders, had infused some special rum with habanero peppers and he had created a new cocktail, effectively a rum-based margarita - so it was spicy with the rum, but with fresh lime, agave and Cointreau, and it was frickin incredible. He is a master craftsman and a terrific bartender. Cheese plate was very good as well, with assorted cheeses balanced by fruits on the plate. I really like the Cypress but there are a few issues: 1) it is too small and needs to have a better flow - not sure how you do that but it is needed: 2) given the floors and glass, the place is ridiculously loud with just 8 people in there - they seriously need to find a way to damper the noise; 3) the murals are somewhat attractive but gives the place an old stale feel - think it needs something more up to date; 4) the bar stools are cheap and feel like they could break at any time; 5) if you extended the room into the patio, you could have tables and couches/chairs that are much needed, to remove the congestion at the bar. So, great bartenders, especially Navon, and if you make a few of the above changes, the place would be most everyone's destination bar in Covington. read more
