We've dined here twice in the past couple of years. Both visits went well with good service, prompt delivery of food and reasonable prices. Their location, IMO, is not ideal making them a destination and not a passersby decision. That said, great food is paramount to draw the crowd, and unfortunately, their fare is good, but not great. There's a ton of places just like it in Monroe. Sorta the "been there, had that" type of cooking. Too much is frozen food from Sysco and dropped in the fryer. That ain't cooking. We decided to come here for our weekly work lunch with everyone. One of coworkers said this place was great, so why not try it, right? First thing I noticed they have shecrab soup...instant win there. I ordered a big bowl and it did not disappoint. I order ten wings, garlic parm and teriyaki. Wing sauce is good but I did order the blue cheese. I am spoiled with homemade blue cheese from another local restaurant and you can tell it is definitely basic dressing. So we've lived down this way over 20 years now but this is our first visit to Southern Roots Bar & Grill. We searched for an open restaurant near our current location & found this gem. We were shocked to see some of the negative reviews that claimed it was a racist place & couldn't believe it since we have been here for 2 decades & never experienced any real discrimination. We walked in & saw people of all different races & backgrounds. We were greeted with friendly faces and a hostess who was a person of color & VERY friendly and welcoming. Our server was also a person of color & he was outgoing, friendly, attentive & flat-out terrific. The food was great, the Tsunami sauce is phenomenal. I think it's unfortunate that people will assume racism or bigotry when they simply just had a less than desirable experience. Our experience was top notch & we'll definitely return! read more

I have been coming to Southern Roots for months now, since finding out about it, and I leave each time happy, stuffed and making plans to come back. Their chicken wings are some of the best I have ever had. They are baked and are not breaded and are absolutely delicious. If I am feeling very frisky/hungry, I will get the "Southern Pride": double cheeseburger/fries/5 wings dish. We have been to Southern Roots many times and it is totally worth it! My husband and I love the fish sandwich with sweet potato fries. It is a huge portion and can be grilled or fried. The staff have been very nice every time and make sure you are cared for well. We love that this is a hometown stop with fresh options and pricing is too bad. read more

I'd rate service at a zero!! My coworkers and I placed orders and the young lady with the tattoos was very rude to the coworker picking up our orders. She cursed my coworker. Then when we called and asked for a manager she refused to allow us to talk to a manager. She then told us that we were the problem and that we wouldn't talk to anyone else. She hung up on us. She then switched the phone off to prevent us calling back. This after telling my coworker not to grab any extra f'n straws and packing a wrong order in our order. Discriminate and prejudice. Empty restaurant. Told us must wait 10-15 min. Waiting 20+ minutes. Group of 5 or more non- minority people came in and they were told 10-15 but then eventually sat at the bar and then proceeded to be asked where they would like to sit. Maybe it was just the server but she was unkind, unwelcoming. We felt like she wanted us to leave. Should have just left immediately once we got the bad vibe and look but we were trying to give her and the restaurant the benefit of the doubt. They've done a nice job with the renovation from the former restaurant that used to be there, but it is still aTypical southern "restaurant" where everything is tossed in the deep fat fryer. Just walked in and had the worst experience I've had in a restaurant in 45+ years of eating out all over the country, and, the world for that matter. Walked in and we were told by the hostess that it would be a 15 minute wait. We said okay and left our name. We said we would stand at the bar and have a drink. A woman jumped in and said that there would be a wait there as well.... We said fine and walked over to the bar. The same woman walked behind the bar and said we were in the way of a gentleman who was about to pick up an order. Again, fine, we moved over to accommodate him and a bartender with black and green hair asked what we wanted. Ordered two beers and she asked angrily if we we're paying cash or credit. Informed her it was cash and she proceeded to snatch the bill from my hand and then threw the change on the bar. My fiancee asked if there was a problem and she said we were rude to the owner.....the bartender proceeded to sit down at a table with customers and complain loudly that we were "fucking rude to the owner" we left after I had a swing of my beer and left her a $1.78 tip for a $6.00 + tab. On the way out the door she proceeded to get in my face letting loose a wave of profanity and said never to come back. I used to order from here all the time to the point the Waitresses would recognize me and knew my order. I live 20 minutes from here My last order, they screwed up my food, So a forty minute round trip to get it fixed And the older lady with the glasses that was a waitress was rudis can be I was trying to explain how it was supposed to be. And she basically responded whatever. So I hope it was Worth it you just lost a regular customer and any recommendations to new potential customers. I will also be telling everyone I would not recommend your restaurant anymore if that's how you're going to treat regular customers when your staff screws up their food Just because they're busy, does not give them the excuse to be rude. They would not even take the time to properly prepare my replacement order, which were the nachos I wanted the shredded cheese on them. They brought it out on the side.
