I was meeting a family member as they passed through town and a friend told me about this spot that was close by. We were very impressed. The food was absolutely delicious. All of our dishes were Fresh and Hot. The ambience was really nice for a hotel spot. It gave me feels of Dogwood in Uptown. Nice heavy furniture and a really big bar. My husband said, could have been the best Ruben ever. And he has had a lot of them. The onion rings were fire. Both in taste and heat. I had the fish and chips and it was every bit as good as the best I had in London. Make sure to order a side of mayo for the fries. So Good! Finished it with the cheesecake bites and dang if it wasn't incredible. You can tell it was freshly made. The zest of lemon even came through with it being fried. Our server was very kind and everything was perfect. It was a little slow for it and the food. But that seems to be a staffing shortage not the problem of the server. Nice restaurant inside the Marriott. It's spacious and modern, but I don't care for how long the tables are as it can get hard to hear the other person across the table. It's also pretty dark inside. None of the appetizers were calling me, and decided on ordering the Carolina Hot Chicken Sandwich with rosemary fries. The chicken sandwich was good, not spicy at all. The fries were very tasty. Never had chow chow salad before and it was quite refreshing. My friend ordered the shrimp and grits, and I was glad I did not order it as planned. It was soupy and not your typical shrimp and grits though it had good flavor when I tried it. He had to ask for a spoon to eat this dish! I do wish they had more options for sparkling wine, and ordered a glass of rose which was fine. Talked with our waitress and she was very blunt and said their desserts weren't very good and recommended the brie cheesecake. Was not a fan of this dish. Red wine soaked pears, brie cheese, and the balsamic vinegar...it was all too pungent and too many strong flavors all at once. If you need a private dining event space, Ryan and the team at the Golden Owl are amazing! We hosted a family baby shower "linner" (lunch+dinner) for 14 people and the team was so gracious, helpful and pleasant! We had plenty of space if we needed it. The group menu has something for everyone and it is all delicious, everyone loved their meal. There is a TV in the room of you need to show a presentation or slide slow, there is a buffet that can double as a gift table/cake table. With only a few people in the restaurant you would think they could nail the food. But unfortunately not. I ordered the prime rib sandwich and my wife ordered the salmon. We watched as my sandwich sat under there "warming" lights for 25 minutes while the salmon was started. We were close of enough to hear the manager tell the cook he made the sandwich too fast. Nothing like seeing your food sit for that long. When it arrived, it was cold. Server came by and asked how the food was. I said my sandwich tasted like it'd been sitting for 25 minutes. She apologized. When paying our server apologized again. Told her it wasn't her fault. Her manager stood in front of the food the entire time. Should have had it remade. You charge $28 for a sandwich so letting it sit for so long isn't acceptable. Gave it 2 stars because our server was nice. I did tip 20% still. Manager is weak and should be ashamed he didn't stop by to apologize, especially after customer makes multiple comments. This particular visit the pork was super salty and I ended up switching it out for the shrimp and grits. I really enjoyed my visit to Golden Owl. I visited Golden Owl on the Sunday before Christmas. We arrived for dinner right when they opened for dinner service (my parents are EARLY dinner eaters!). We chose to valet and walked up to the second floor where the restaurant resides. When we got to the restaurant, we were the second group of diners. I'd made reservations but they weren't necessary for that time! We were seated right in front of the chef's table so we were able to view dinner prep. We chose the cornbread for an appetizer and it came out sizzling hot in a cast iron. The cornbread is on the sweeter side which I'm a fan of and comes with butter. For a beverage, I asked for an Arnold Palmer but I was informed that they were out of lemonade. The waitress ended up letting me know that the lemonade and tea are from a fountain. This type of place I expected them to make their own so I was glad that she let us know. Instead, I went with club soda. For entrees, my mom and I both went the Joyce Springs chicken and my dad went with the ribs. To cut to the chase, we all loved our dinner choices. The mushroom jus that's served with the chicken is delicious and I would cover all of the veggies in that sauce. Overall, I think this is a good restaurant for the area especially because it makes for a more formal dining option for UNCC students who have visiting parents/family in town. read more

A friend and I came here because we'd read good things, but the initial experience left much to be desired! Firstly, they only offer valet parking?! It's in the lobby of the Marriott of the UNCC campus, so only parking is a garage that is $5 for the FIRST hour, valet, or campus permit parking only. We ended up parking in the lot of the shopping plaza across the street because it was a nice day and we figured we'd save spending unnecessary money on parking for a simple brunch that isn't even in Uptown! Then, the front doors were locked!?! We thought maybe it was closed (though it was just after noon on a Sunday, so it shouldn't have been) but we saw people inside. The sliding doors to the lobby are around a corner and not visible from the Golden Owl front door, so we had no clue they were there, it just looks like a solid brick wall! We had to walk alllll the way around the hotel to where the valet is and then thankfully a nice employee showed us where the elevators were and how to get to the restaurant from there...this location must have been designed by a hide n seek champion! Then, we see there is a line and the hostess is speaking w/the people in front of us; a family of four white people get in line just to the side of us, like they were trying to get to the hostess before us, though they could clearly see we were waiting. My friend was like "uh-uh", and quickly walked up to the hostess once the others in front of us left. We ask her for a table for 2; she says it will be a 45min wait w/o a reservation...there are literally 5 available tables visible! So we ask if we can sit at the bar; she then turns to the family standing behind us and asks if they have a reservation; they say no. She ignores our bar question completely and turns back to us and says she'll see if a table is available; then turns back to the family of four and tells them to follow her and seats them at a 4-top high table right in front of us!?!? My friend and I are flabberghasted by this and I am about to lose it and suggest we leave, but my friend was visiting from out of town and we were both starving, when she comes back and says "your table will be ready in a minute", so we stayed, begrudgingly. Not sure what was going through the hostess' head to treat us that way, but I will note the hostess was a young white blonde girl, the fam of four was Abercrombie & Fitch white; tho I am not white, I can pass, and my friend is a very brown latina. That being said, the rest of the experience was enjoyable, and our server Ty, who btw is African American, was absolutely fantastic and changed our mood almost immediately! My friend and I both had an Owl's Brew (which was thankfully boozyAF after what had just happened) and we split the smokehouse benedict and chicken & waffles, both of which were pretty good (not amazing, but tasty). The pricepoint is what you would expect from contemporary brunch places these days of around $30/pp for an adult bevvy, entree, tax, and tip. Sadly, there's nothing at all to make me want to return here. And, to clarify, I am not outright accusing this place of racism; just noting the circumstances and the behavior and how it made my friend and I feel. Whether that was the intent or not of the hostess, she should definitely be made aware that is how it came across and try to correct that behavior for future guests. read more

Looking for a new place to try for date night with hubby I stumbled across this place. I saw pictures of their cornbread and knew it was a place I must try. We visited on a Friday night. It's located at the new Marriott hotel in university. Parking is in a parking deck which they do charge but we were able to valet for free and just tipped its way more convenient. The restaurant is upstairs once you valet park we had a hard time finding it. But they have people in the lobby who are helpful. When we entered the restaurant we were asked if we had reservations which we did not so there would of been about a twenty minute wait unless we sat at the bar which we did. I started off with a nice mixed drink the Queen City Margarita. I ordered the cornbread which is a must try for our appetizer. You will not be disappointed. It's a sweet buttery cornbread. Our meals were the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich for me with fries. The fries were a little salty the sandwich was nice crispy and spicy. Hubby ordered the Joyce Farms Chicken Breast with smoked carrots and mashed potatoes. He enjoyed his meal scraped his plate clean. We picked this as our restaurant week choice this year and really enjoyed it! They were very accommodating when we showed up 40 minutes late for our reservation. Traffic to get there from the opposite side of town during rush hour was no joke! My husband I split our meals. We got the Country Ham & Biscuit, Fried Green Tomatoes, Smoked Mac & Cheese, Bison Meatloaf, Banana Puddin', and Blueberry Cornbread Puddin'. Everything was really good. My favorite things were probably the Bison Meatloaf and the Blueberry Cornbread Puddin'. I'm not usually a meatloaf person, but this one was really flavorful! I loved the substitution of cornbread instead of a traditional bread pudding. The service was a little hit or miss. Our first two courses came out really fast, but then it took forever to get our dessert and then a really long time to get our check. That's alright though. I am feeling this place! From the Bartenders to the Waitstaff, and even the kitchen staff, this place will be the new talk of University area! I came here with a couple of girlfriends to celebrate Gemini birthdays (esp. me) and we were taken aback. We did not feel like we were in a hotel restaurant or on UNCC's campus. The food was great, even though a couple of modifications were forgotten about. But they were promptly rectified. I had that pan seared trout and it was so good. Drinks were great! I can't wait to see if more items will be added to the menu in the future. Our bartender shined that night. We love him. Went on a Saturday morning for brunch with 3 friends. We all missed the memo that it is located inside the Marriott hotel located on UNCC's campus. Since valet is complimentary, it is the best way to park. (you may be able to park across the street (risky) or in one of the parking decks (for a cost) but valet was easy. First impressions: We went around 9:30/10am. It was pretty empty just how I like it. There may have been 2 or 3 other tables but we were spaced out so I felt very comfortable given COVID. The setting/atmosphere/decor was really nice. Another thing I noticed was how comfortable the chairs were. I usually get antsy sitting in restaurant seating for too long but I was fine in their chairs. Service: Our service was nice but relatively inattentive given how empty it was. Usually, servers are overly attentive when restaurants are empty but she disappeared when we received our food. Usually, that would have been fine but I needed something and she was nowhere to be found for awhile. Food and Drinks: I ordered the queen city margarita and a mimosa with just a splash of pineapple juice. I really enjoyed the margarita and the mimosa was made just right. My food was okay but my friends really enjoyed their meals. My food would have been better if the bacon had been cooked medium well versus overly cooked. When I requested another serving of bacon, it was undercooked. I ate the parts that were cooked to my liking and left the rest. Overall, my opinion was neutral. It is a really nice spot that I would definitely return to for the margarita. I would also be open to returning to try some other items on the menu. I had reservations at the Golden owl tavern for brunch with my aunt on a beautiful Saturday. We were not quite sure where to park but I found out of there is complimentary valet parking at the lobby of Marriot of UNCC campus which makes sense being that the restaurant is on the second floor of the Marriot hotel of UNCC. There is also a parking garage across from the hotel but it is $5 for the first hour. We did have a hard time find the place but once we got there the restaurant had a nice interior and atmosphere. Unfortunately, there was no hostesses at the time so we were a bit confused where to go but once we finally got seated, we were able to chill and attempt to enjoy the experience. We ordered the Anson Mill Cast Iron Skillet cornbread which was pretty good. It was one of the highlights of the meal. I ordered the short rib meal which came with eggs, collard greens, a biscuit and potatoes. The short rib came with white gravy but it was bit too salty. Thursday for a 5:00 reservation, arrived and took the elevator to the second floor. You can also take the stairs which are to the right of the back entrance. The hostess and manager greeted us upon arrival and the manager checked in on us again during dinner which was great. The restaurant like the hotel itself has a casual clean and modern esthetic. Very nicely done. There are a mixture of soft back booth and tables with chairs. Thank goodness the chairs are not hard wood seats and backs like so many restaurants favor these days. The lighting is very dim but thankfully not bright. We ordered a glass of Pinot Gris from Oregon which was good enough. Not bad but not quite as good as I would have expected for the region. I ordered the greens + grains salad and asked the server if I could add a protein as it was not showing as an option for any of the salads. He wasn't sure so he went to ask. Came back to say, you can add chicken or shrimp. I requested the shrimp since I've eaten so much chicken lately that I may start to grow feathers. When the salad came to the table, I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the shrimp. There were 6 of them and they were large and grilled perfectly with a light seasoning that was also perfect. The salad was delicious and very filling which included kale, farro, squash, dates, almonds, with an unnoticeable taste of balsamic. It was supposed to have parmesan but I did not see or taste any parmesan. My friends ordered the whiskey crab soup which came out in a huge bowl and I could see lots of crab but with a disappointing side of 4 small Ritz crackers and no spoon. The other friend has eaten here before and decided to try the buttermilk fried chicken thighs served on a buckwheat waffle. She ate it all but did not comment on the chicken and waffle, instead said she wanted to come next time for dessert. Overall the food prices are high but I'm trying to remember the costs have increased over the last year and the food and ingredients are of a higher quality. Our server needed to pay more attention to details. We had to ask twice for a spoon for the soup. Also, he spilled water once while outing water and did not return to clean it up, and a second time was a large pool of water on one side of the table from a spill that he did not bother to wipe up. If you're coming, be sure to make reservations. The bar had a good crowd but due to the lack of servers in restaurants these days, the table service was at capacity and we were all very spread out to allow for social distance. So be sure to make reservations. We left at 7:00 and were lucky it wasn't a busy night allowing the valet to be quick to retrieve our cars from the parking deck on the university campus. It was freezing and windy tonight so very glad for the valet while we stood inside to stay warm. Next time hope to try the cast iron cornbread and pineapple upside cake. read more

This restaurant was so clean and the decor was very appropriate for a modern tavern. The service was pretty good. The only downfall is the fact that a hair found in our food was not addressed AT ALL. In fact, the waitress seemed to ignore it all together and moved on to taking other orders like nothing ever happened. The food was okay. I was really excited to try the collard greens with ham hocks but there was minimal seasoning and way more ham than actual collard greens. I must say, the cornbread was TO DIE FOR.
