I miss this place so much! It was a treat to go a visit this store and pick out a single serving dessert and a wedge of cheese. They had the best chicken salad and carried a good variety of local business food items as well as international. Loved seeing all the new seasonal things and the way the smell of the coffee hit you as soon as you came in. My mother would buy a couple bags of an orange coffee that they would grind fresh and it smelled like those candy orange wedges she would always partake in the sample of coffee that was free as well. The hot sandwiches were good and my mom would buy meat from Germany there which she couldn't find any place else. I had my first cheese straws from the store. I tasted a lot of things for the first time in the store not being native to North Carolina. I always loved the fact that they had the option to build your own basket of food items and you could ship it out to someplace else. Every time I drive by where they used to be in Chapel Hill I miss them and I really hope that one day they rebuild their store. I just think at the time , it got to be that prices became too expensive that nobody was really buying things anymore so maybe if the market changes and prices lower they come back, one can only hope. read more

I've been here twice. If I was rating only from my first experience in April of 2016 , 4 stars, now if I'm rating it for July 2017: 1 star. The staff from the first time were way more friendly and nice. The staff from this today weren't as lively and seem like they all didn't want to be there. Today we cooked: Grilled Peach and Ricotta Thyme Crostini Chicken Saltimbocca with Roasted Tomato Orzo and Grilled Asparagus Zeppole (doughnuts) with Cafe Crema Here is what bothered me about the 2nd time: We paid for 12 people, which means 12 portions of food, right? Well since 7 people showed up, they plated 7 entrees, 7 appetizers, 7 desserts. We cooked approximately 15. My curiosity got the best of me and I had to ask, where are the other 5 portions we paid for going to? The lead said we can't have the remaining 5 portions, we can have 2 and the rest has to go to feeding the staff... in which most were volunteers.... Ok so in my opinion if they're volunteers then maybe we cook 12 + x-number of portions for staff + volunteers ... Give us what we paid for! Even when asking for seconds or an extra appetizer bite ... the answer was no... strange, we paid for that extra portion. 1st time: they boxed our extra portions nicely without us repeatedly asking about leftovers and extras. I have many fond memories of visiting Southern Season as a child in NC. It was chock full of candies, kitchen utensils, specialty NC items, and had the Weathervane Restaurant. In recent years when I came to visit my family, it looked picked over and a bit sad. Sometimes the products had short shelf life dates on it and the poor employees would explain that it was what they received that week. (Certainly not their fault that the warehouse was sending product with upcoming expiration dates.) I sensed this was due to the bankruptcy issues and vendors complaining that they hadn't been paid for their orders in a long time. Everyone there was knowledgeable and friendly whenever I went. It's a shame it got to the point where they had to close the physical locations to focus on online orders only. I'm hoping this helps them turn things around. read more

They have all kinds of great gifts and goodies. Chocolates, coffees, drinks, teas, jellys, meats, bakes goods, etc. There are some fancy food items, local vendors and other supplies. Some of the prices are great, others are a little steep. Some things you get a great value for the price but most of the prices are a bit high. However, you are in Chapel Hill so it is to be expected. All in all, there is so much to this store. It's clean and the staff are friendly. Let yourself go free and explore the store. This is like the North Carolina version of Dean & Delucca....only better. If whole Foods Married Carolina Pottery and sent it to Ivy league schools...this would be its love child. Seriously. You can quite literally find ANYTHING here. For example; in a single trip I got some great pyrex food storage bowls($1.99 ea), a fantastic little platter made of Acacia wood, a pair of cute reading glasses and some BBQ sauce. They have a deli, a candy store, a wine store a cheese store...plus a sandwich place and restaurant. You need kitchen stuff...they have it. How about some gardening? No problem. A little bit of class at Southern Season? Yep, that's what they call their cooking classes here and they can be a lot of fun! Hit up the Southern Season website and peruse their long schedule of offerings ranging from baked goods, seasonal specials, sweets and more, appealing to a huge variety of foodies. While CLASS typically features a rotation of staff and local chefs leading their classes, there are also visiting chefs from local restaurants which is what really gets me excited. It's a chance to sample the fare of a high-end restaurant while not making a full commitment. I've had the chance to hit up two classes run by the chef from the Fairview Dining Room and Herons, two very high-end spots. You can now register online but once you get to Southern Season, head to the very back and go up the stairs by the ice cream parlor. At the top you'll find the ladies-men's room and a mod desk in the corner. Register in, grab a name tag and grab a seat in the demo kitchen (first come, first served). And what a nice kitchen it is at Southern Season! Granite counter tops, tons of cabinets and chopping area, overhead mirrors to display the actions and some serious stoves and ovens. They've got water and tea to tide you over until class starts. Typically you'll have a couple of glasses of good wine along with the plates from the chef's menu. Sometimes they will do it real-time, other times they will have all the food prepped and the demo is just that. But overall a fun night where you drink wine, eat good food, pick up some tips on cooking and do a Q&A with great chefs in the area. For $45 it's really not a bad deal at all! My first visit to Southern Season was probably about 6-7 years ago. I loved the place and I have made it a point to visit every single time that I am in this area. It was my go-to for specialty North Carolina items and I always found cool spices or items from other regions. Unfortunately, Southern Season has changed drastically since then. On this recent visit, I was surprised at how much of the store had transitioned from specialty food, teas, spices, coffee, etc. into cookware and utensils. Even the areas that were still designated for the specialty items were rather bare. The coffee bean selection was still decent and the gentleman that helped me there was really friendly. The rest of the areas were barren. The deli section was less than that of any random grocery store. The word "specialty" has been disassociated in my mind from Southern Seasons. To make matters worse, the employees were rude and lackadaisical. I had two female employees that kept moving through the aisle holding a personal conversation and blocking most of the shelves where I was trying to look. Even after I said excuse me, they just stood there. I did end up buying some coffee beans and some North Carolina toffee to take home to my brother. Beyond that, there was little that I was interested in. That is such a shame because this store used to be amazing. I urge the owners to reconsider the changes and decline before the store is no more. read more

I've been a long time patron of Southern Season since the days back at their old location where Trader Joe's now is. When they relocated to this location, in the previously named University Mall, I was concerned they might have bit off more than they could chew with the size difference. I don't know if that proved to be true or not, but multiple locations later (which ended up closing) and then selling the store seemed to have taken a tole. I was there a few times after the owner sold and watched a decline that ultimately seemed to lead the new owners to bankruptcy. The few times I ventured back after that things just didn't seem the same. After a long stretch of not visiting I went in last week and it seemed a mere shell of what a grand store it used to be. Walking in the entrance by the parking lot I saw no sign of the huge coffee and loose tea selection (which is now a much smaller offering up by the mall entrance) and the tea pots are completely gone off the shelves too. Basically an empty area as you come in which didn't seem like good temperature gauge. So much of the selections in the store have been downsized, with the exception of the candy and wine areas. At least the Weathervane is still there I thought, but as I found later, it has unfortunately gone downhill too. read more

I love southern season and have for many years, but I recent times, it seems like they have lost any and all pride in their store. First off, they are always out of Literally Everything. 50% of the store is under stocked or out of stock. Then, we move on to the horrible renovations. You walk in to what was once the quaint entrance with the coffee bar. Now, the enterance looks like a 20 year old rite aid pharmacy. Outdated fluorescent lights and cheap ceiling tiles with many missing make it seem like they really cheaped out on this renovation. Then for my final complaint, the presentations of what was once so beautiful (such as pastries) are ugly and sit alone in a gas station style refrigerator. I'm sorry southern season, but I'm not coming back this has been nothing but a disappointment. read more

This was always a favorite spot from the time we moved here in 2000. We would often spend $1000 per year there, eating meals in the restaurant and buying wine and other goodies. A few years ago, the misguided owners decided to undergo a big expansion. This was undercapitalized and it really put a millstone around the neck of the flagship store here in Chapel Hill, sucking out much of its vitality. Nowadays I go and I can no longer find a lot of my favorite items. A trip here today revealed that most of the teas they sell are out of stock. One of my favorite parts of the store the "wall of shame" used to brim with a mind-boggling array of great chocolate bars. That offering has shrunk greatly. I am concerned that the new owners either don't care are they are too inept to live. They seem to be destroying a great local institution apace. I have loved A Southern Season since I discovered it quite a few years ago so when I returned to the area, it was on the must-go list. On entry, I knew something had changed. I could see all the way to the back wall. Ok, a store remodel is a good thing. It did look great but as I started looking for specific items, I was soon very disappointed. I came in with a shopping list of favorite items and one by one they were not to be found. I had always loved the wide selection of teas but there we many gaps in the stock. When I asked, I was told they new owners were not keeping the shelves stocked as they had in the past. Ok, no tea... let's find my favorite chocolate bar(s). Again, this always left me to make difficult decisions. Not today. I found a brand from Belgium at the same price in SoFlo so I did take one but that was it. As I continued to wander, I just didn't feel it like I remembered. This is ok, I can still have a great lunch in the Weathervane, right? I went to check the menu and the specials. Again, I was disappointed. I remember past visits with unique and special choices. Today I didn't feel it. The menu looked like too many others. I made some purchases of items I don't see everywhere but I just didn't feel the need to buy out the store as I have been guilty of in the past. It's always been fun to walk around A Southern Season. They have a huge variety of gourmet foods (fresh and packaged), candies, teas, wine, dishes and kitchen equipment. The prices are high, and we hardly saw any employees on a recent Saturday. I tried to buy a bottle of wine, but the price on the shelf was a lot lower than the price at the register, so I changed my mind. I really enjoy this store! It has so many unique items and so much geared towards gift giving and NC in general, it's a must-take place for shopping with visitors. Add to that the great restaurant and cooking classes and wow, a winner. Cooking classes are mainly demo and I'd prefer more hands-on like Sur La table or Wynton's World but the local and celebrity chefs are great and I think of it as a wonderful meal with a class. When I was Christmas shopping while visiting my friends in the area, I asked to go to the snooty grocery store... and, of course, I meant Southern Season. I feel like the shop has changed since I was last there, which has been years. A friend of mine moved to Chapel Hill some time ago and was telling me about this store that he said was tailor made for me. I gave him a skeptical raised eye brow and waited to see for myself. OH. EM. GEE. I could lose my mind in this place. From the outside, it looks like any other generic, big box store. The brick facade is fairly plain so I had no idea the wonders that lurked inside. It was like entering Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. When you first enter, you go past the bulk coffee and tea section and the aroma is like an old Bugs Bunny cartoon where the whispy white scent trails lift you off your feet and you float to the brewed coffee counter where you can actually get some perfectly brewed coffee. There were several nice blends to choose from and the price was fine. It was less than Starbucks to get some great- but very hot- coffee to enjoy while my husband (clutching his credit cards in fear) and I wandered the rest of the huge store. Just past the coffee stand on the left are cases of prepared foods. First, perfect pastries and other sweets. Then moving on to cheeses, gourmet deli items and prepared salads. Everything looked so delicious and there was a large selection of specialty items I'd only ever seen for sale online. I was so tickled to see that nestled in among the foie gras and duck confit and merguez sausages were some boxes of this Jersey Girl's breakfast staple: Taylor Ham brand pork roll. On the right, the barrage of amazing cooking implements and tools arranged in thematic kiosks started. Looking for an Asian dumpling steamer? Go to the Asia kiosk. A ravioli maker? The Italian kiosk. Scandinavian. French. British. Knives. Citrus tools. Candy making. Handmade. Hand painted. Hand blown. Locally made. It was such a refreshing change from a chain store where if you went looking for a ball whisk, you might find one. At Southern Season there was an array of sizes, styles and prices for every oddball item. Toward the back of the store we wandered into a huge selection of beers and wines (not really our thing) and then packaged gourmet food items and I was in HEAVEN. 500 different types of hot sauces and marinades. Cheese ball mixes. Dips and spreads. Crackers, cookies, cheese straws, nuts. Gourmet chocolates and candies. And scattered throughout all of it were samples of real food, like Costco but really good. We tried handmade raviolis stuffed with country ham, pesto and cheese. There was a guy frying breakfast sausage that came from locally raised pigs. We had some brie en croute covered with a sweet walnut glaze that made my eyes roll back into my head. This, my friends, is foodie paradise. They have Le Creuset cookware and Vera Bradley handbags. Local pottery. Specialty linens. Cards and stationery. Holiday decor. The huge inventory of really cool stuff is staggering. There's a plant section with huge gorgeous cut flowers that smell like sunshine and live plants and topiaries that seem to be thriving despite the lack of overhead misters and sun lamps. And then the icing on the cupcake is that the place is swarming with friendly, knowledgeable, HELPFUL staff people who know their stuff and genuinely want you to have a good shopping experience. I restrained myself and only picked up a few items and then briefly considered putting it all back when I saw the checkout line that stretched halfway back through the store. I don't know how they did it but holy cow, that line MOVED. I only waited for two or three minutes before I was able to swipe my card and be handed a lovely, sturdy shopping bag with my purchases. I am a longtime shopper and in full disclosure, I volunteer occasionally at the cooking school. This review will focus on the store. It's been sold and resold several times and I'm sad to say they carry fewer food items than they used to. The new owners seem more interested in selling kitchen gadgets than gourmet food. The last few times I've come in some of the lower shelves were pretty sparse. They still have a good coffee and tea selection, and a deli and chocolate counter. There's usually a free coffee sample but they've cut way back on the food samples they used to offer. They also have fewer sales -- the old summer clearance sales used to be legendary. If it's nice, and you need it to entertain, A Southern Season has it. And since everyone has touched on that aspect of the shop's awesomeness. A Southern Season is (also) wonderful for a quick dinner, or lunch. They have an excellent salad bar, complete with olive bar and a few mixed salads (i.e. tuna, shrimp); a huge by the pound section; and soups, sandwhich station and hot bar that seems to have a bread pudding du jour. The deli area has bacon you can get, cut by the slice, that is said to be "better than the bacon on my sandwich at Guglhupf." There's also a frozen section of local meats from Mapleview Farms and others nearby. And just a note to anyone seeking a deal when things are on SALE! or otherwise. This is a store that has stuff you can't get ANYWHERE else without paying for shipping. I really appreciate having a gourmet store just down the road that has just about any cheese, chocolate, fancy salt, etc. my heart desires, even if I might have to have less of it to get it (since the super-fine things are sold by weight). There are deals to be had in here, but you won't find them if you're busy with the sticker shock. I love this store. And when I moved to NYC, I missed the hell out of it. I did not get 100 feet in the door and I spent $25.00 on 7 oz of Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee. I was impressed they had such a gourmet selection of the Bean. As i walked through the store, I was amazed on what they carried. I said " you got to be kidding" every 30 feet. This store carries most everything in Gourmet Dining , from serving to eating. The candy area ( if you have a sweet tooth) is a dentist paradise. They have chocolate from all over the world, and tubes of candy on the wall you can bag and eat. I stumbled into the wine section, A darker intimate lighting than the other store. Like you are in a wine cellar. You can choose from wines from around the Globe. Excellent selection of Champagne also. After you have walked for a few miles you can stop at the deli and get something to eat. After your meal you can get dessert also. This place is amazing. Anything to do with dining, entertaining at home, preparation to serving, the have it in a Gourmet Way ! I have to say I walked around here for 1 hour before I got my bearings and figured it out. Not sure what is going on with this location. I went there not long after I moved here in the spring of 2018 and thought it was awesome. I bought all kinds of things - cheese straws, toffee, cheddar biscuits, Moravian spice cookies. I brought my daughter here a few months later and she stocked up on coffee and accessories. I came here at Christmas and bought tea towels and ornaments, along with lots more of the above items - I could not find the cheddar biscuits. But now I think the location has fallen on hard times. The warning signs were there on my previous visits. Everything is very expensive - I would say "overpriced." On our first visit we did have dinner at the Weathervane restaurant and while the food was okay, we had the distinct impression that this was an "old people" restaurant - aimed at seniors who eat dinner at 4 p.m. The loud noise from the kitchen did not help the atmosphere. Despite all that, when my daughter was back this summer with a friend we headed back, considering it "the" place to buy NC and southern gifts/souvenirs. But alas, that is no longer the case. The store had been rearranged - coffee and tea consolidated and moved, with hardly any of the previous selection. It seemed empty and lackluster - no joy, no energy, no passion. My daughter was so disappointed. Most of the displays were empty or half empty. The store was uncomfortably warm and all the deli display cases were dripping with condensation. I would not have touched any of the food available in that unpleasantly warm store. After finding nothing to buy and nothing to eat, we fled the heat and returned to the air conditioning of our car. I will no longer take out of town guests there and plan to do my Christmas shopping elsewhere. I'm very sad. read more

Great for gifts, we picked up a Mother's Day present today, as well as cards for future birthdays. Brought home crackers, popcorn, wine and more. FRIENDLY. What a fun place this must be to work and it SHOWS. Everyone is so nice. There's someone in every department with a smile and an offer to help if you need them, but they don't bug you. There are samplings in various departments, if you're not too full from WeatherVane's. Today they even had a set-up for kids to decorate their own sugar cookies...made me wish we had a kid with us. They sell so many unique things and local items that are one of a kind. I have taken 3 cooking classes at the cooking school and it's WAY better than any I have taken in the area. It's worth the price and you get a discount to use in the store! I always love purchasing the nuts they sell at the store. They are so good! When I get married, I want to get registered here. Their annual sales are probably some of the best sales in the area, in terms of gourmet foods and housewares. The selection is incredibly vast and is careful to contain something that appeals to at least every kind of person, whether it is a foodie or someone looking for quality local products. Their teas were discounted to excellent prices during the 35th Annual Sale I went to ($2-$3/ 2oz.bag), and best of all, they also come in plastic packages with zip-locks that can be opened, so that you can smell the tea inside (and for me, this is usually a good indicator of how the tea will taste). My favoritestheir Manhattan Earl Grey & Thai Tea, which I have to say is better than more mainstream gourmet brands such as Harney & Sons. I'm curious to find out where Southern Season gets their tea. Their tea infusers were discounted too, to $3.96 each. Dishes were some of the most steeply discounted, and I also got a bag of 10 Chauo Pods for only $3. This is only a taste of the kinds of great things in store (no pun intended). read more

Me to my bride "We need to come back here some time" my bride "Ya THINK???" but when we got to the check out counter her response changed to "Maybe we shouldn't make a habit of coming here too often!" We had only just gotten to the hot sauce aisle by that time. We found wine, we found gadgets, we found hot sauces, spices, grilling accessories, varieties of teas, cheese, a deli counter, and my daughter found the candy! I tried habanero pickle slices and pepper jelly and sampled some smooth & tasty coffee. The beer section wasn't particularly well stocked with the variety you might see at a world market, but it was worth looking over. The wines... oooh yes... we tried a few of those too. I didn't know it before I got there, but I needed some Salvation Sauce, some sweet hot thai spices, and a variety of wines I'd never tried before. I think I found a small slice of heaven on earth at A Southern Season, I have to admit I'm hooked and I need to go back to get my fix. read more

I can't even begin to describe what a food-lover's heaven Southern Season is. Picture a space the size of your average supermarket with something to appeal to everyone - a coffee roaster, bakery, prepared foods section, snacks like you won't believe (including an entire aisle dedicated to cheese straws and a section full of their delicious brand of peanuts), all sorts of interesting imported products, a wall of chocolate bars, freshly prepared chocolates, and confections to satisfy any sweet tooth. For those who love to cook, there's a complete section of bakeware, utensils, and fun kitchen tools, and a beautiful tabletop section with lovely items for entertaining. This place is just chock-full of unique items you just can't find elsewhere, all collected together in one tantalizing place. I have three bags of goodies that will be making the trip back up I-95 with me, including Jack Rudy bourbon cocktail cherries and small-batch tonic, their Ragin' Cajun snack mix, and things I can't wait to work into recipes, like a local horseradish mustard that looks amazing and and some spicy salmon rubs to perk things up. Walking in, right away you see some of the variety they offer: coffee, tea, kitchen trinkets, snacks, you name it. Prepared foods that look awesome. A Korean hot sauce I've been searching for. Root beers I've never heard of (and plenty that I have.) All kinds of candy, meats, dry goods... It reminds me a little of Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, and a lot of Jungle Jim's near Cincinnati. Imported stuff, local stuff, all kinds of stuff. Service was great- friendly and helpful. Prices are a little high but not bad; where else can you find some of this? I used to LOVE LOVE LOVE this store and what happened. it was warm in there and many displays were bare. also over 2/3 of refrigerated section was empty. I stopped by here on a Saturday to grab a few items. Upon checkout, I pulled out a Southern Season giftcard. The dour-looking woman at the register stared at me and stated, "You know we don't accept those anymore." Well, no I did not know that and no one informed me prior to trying to checkout. Register lady continued, "We went bankrupt so you can't use the giftcard." "I wish I'd known that before coming in," I said. "Well, you don't have to buy this stuff," she bitchily added. Surprised by the tone of the lady, I quickly paid and got out. At this point it doesn't matter when this place goes under because I will not be going back. read more

We love, love A Southern Season. While living in Chapel Hill, we visited often for specialty food items and holiday treats. They have nearly everything you can imagine. I think the seasonal and holiday-themed chocolates in the counters at the front are probably my favorites. Stop in sometime! You'll be glad you did. read more

The selection of foodie things here is so broad, yet fun and eclectic. It's a lot of fun to browse here, but expensive at the checkout! I enjoy shopping here for hostess gifts, and for the ladies in my life. Anything I get here is a hit with my mom and sister, especially! The employees here are always very helpful! read more
