This is truly the best vet I've ever been to. Dr. Chaing is amazing but so is the whole staff. They make everything so quick, easy, and painless. Prices are reasonable, appointments are never weeks out, and nobody is pushing extra, unnecessary services on you. When my dog was having seizures, they were with me every step of the way as I got specialized help (thanks to their referral) and kept checking in on progress. And when I have questions, I can send a quick email and they always respond ASAP with help vs making me schedule an appointment and come in. MY PITBULL COULDN'T RECEIVE AFTER CARE SUMMARY OR INSTRUCTIONS FOR A WEEK. WHEN I ASKED QUESTIONS, I WAS TOLD NOT TO COME BACK!! If you are a resident of Sherman Oaks and are a critical thinker, think twice about this local veterinarian. It came highly recommended by a neighbor. I had high hopes and wanted to support this female centric place, however, as a dog mom I would never recommend it due to poor communication, lack of accountability and customer service and a defensive/ hostile stance when questioned. I went back for a recheck of my dog's allergies and skin growths. Note that there are two problems I was seen for initially and the follow up was to include both. This was not the case. I had to remind Dr. Cortez to remeasure my dog's growths. Not all of the growths were measured and there were no recommendations communicated for care. She was focused on his allergies, which had not resolved. I received VERBAL directions for 4 DIFFERENT TASKS and was told she would email me. In the days that followed I called the office and asked for my summary and instructions. I' was told they would be emailed. This happened three times. Nothing was emailed. I was not informed that Dr. Cortez was sick until I was also being instructed not to come back in the email shown below. It's sad that Southpaw won't take any accountability for the excessive wait, poor communication and lacking customer service. I think customer service is a thing of the past, but it's a quality that's important to me. There was no apology or anything that even approached an apology. Apparently, Michelle is a very sensitive person who, instead of handling feedback professionally and focusing on customer satisfaction, chose to send me a termination-of-services email. They don't have twenty minutes to examine a cat with an eye infection, but they somehow have time to terminate clients. I'm honestly relieved my business with them is over - their attitude says everything about how little they care about their clients. I went to Sherman Oaks Veterinary Group instead, and within thirty minutes they saw my pet and took care of everything. While Southpaw seems more focused on replacing staff with Al and maintaining their attitude, real vets are still out there doing their jobs with care and professionalism. I can't say enough good things about this vet office! I have three dogs--including one very spicy Dutch Shepherd and a Frenchie who was surrendered to me due to aggression issues--and the entire team has been absolutely incredible with all of them. I was honestly nervous bringing my Frenchie in because of his biting history, but they've been nothing short of amazing with him. Their calm, confident handling has made such a difference--he hasn't had a single incident or lash-out with them. My Dutchie, who normally won't let anyone near her nails, is totally comfortable here too. They're the only ones she trusts for nail trims! They're always transparent about costs, fair with pricing, and fantastic with communication. Southpaw has taken great care of my little guy, Banjo. We followed Dr. Shim here from West Hollywood and I'm so glad we did. We've been coming here now for close to a year and let me tell you - I used to have to drag Banjo out of the car at our old vet - and here he happily walks in, tail wagging each time. Southpaw is all about pawsitive (sorry) reinforcement so there are always lots of treats for the pups. Each time he's had a wellness checkup or gotten a vaccine, he's on a table gobbling down a little something while they stick him in the patootie. He barely notices and then they give him a squeaky toy. A squeaky toy!! Also, I love that I can be in the room with him for these shots. It makes it so much easier on him. More recently, Banjo had to have some teeth removed... which meant he had to go under anesthesia (oh, my heart!) ... I was nervous - but I also knew he was in good hands with Dr. Shim. All of their staff and technicians were so lovely and happily (and patiently) answered all of my questions (even when I called them with extra questions after I'd dropped Banjo off!). They were very kind and put my heart and mind at ease. Banjo did great - and they really covered their bases post-procedure with an extraordinary level of personalization and care. The folder they gave me with Banjo's discharge papers had a little cartoon Banjo on it (playing the banjo of course...) and I couldn't believe how much it looked like him! Apparently they have a very talented artist who works there. It was just another layer of thoughtfulness that came through. I didn't realize until the next day that part of his paperwork also included a Certificate of Bravery. A CERTIFICATE OF BRAVERY! Banjo felt SO grateful to be acknowledged for his courage. :) Every person I've encountered at Southpaw has been really wonderful - the staff, the technicians and the doctors. We did see another doctor when Dr. Shim wasn't available one time and she was also great. I always feel like Banjo is in good hands here. i'm honestly very disappointed to be writing this review because my experiences prior to the other day have actually been really positive, but after this visit i was left feeling totally heartbroken in how my rescue dog, tulip, was treated here. up until monday we had overall positive experiences at southpaw, until we came in for a routine vaccination appointment. tulip is extremely fearful of needles so they recommended we give her some trazadone for the visit. despite being high as a kite she was still very scared, the vet tech took no time at all to say hi to her or to make her feel comfortable. she was rushed, rude and condescending towards me. she had zero empathy for how my dog was feeling in that moment, to the point where it actually made me cry. after we were finished a very kind vet tech named andrew who we had met before came in and showed us both some kindness, giving my dog some treats and apologizing for not being able to be there himself, hence the three stars. honestly, i wasn't even going to write this review, however after the appointment i texted their service line asking if we could make a note to work with a different vet tech in the future as she wasn't a good fit for tulip to which i still have received no response. i'm still very undecided if i'll be back, it would ultimately depend on if i'm able to work with one of their techs that treats tulip with the basic human kindness that she deserves. read more

They have fresh treats of all flavors on the counter and a Nespresso machine for the parents. I love how the waiting room is set up in a weaving pattern to help separate the animals so that if your pet is stressed they are less overstimulated by having to see other animals next to them. The exam room experience was amazing. It was so cute how they wrote our dogs name on the white board to welcome board and it was such a nice touch for the doctor to let her pick a toy from the drawer to play with and take home. My partner and I were going to switch to Southpaw this past August since it was closer to home and has great reviews. We brought our cat, Owen, in for an annual exam and requested routine blood work. The office was clean and the staff were very friendly. They even wrote his name on their dry erase board in the exam room which we found very cute. We were planning on making Southpaw our primary vet until we received a long and worrisome email from Dr. Linda Shim. In the email (I included screenshots below), she outlined how Owen's blood test results suggested he had CKD which usually indicates 75% loss of kidney function, which is fatal. I was at work when I received this message and instantly burst into tears at the thought of our 5 year old, seemingly healthy and happy cat being given such a terrible diagnosis. He had (and still has) zero symptoms, no urinary issues, and eats a moisture rich diet. When I was able to give Dr. Shim a call back to schedule a second blood test, she said she was "hoping the test results were a fluke." The casual nature of her comment was confusing after having sent such a lengthy email basically giving our cat a death sentence. When we arrived for the follow up, Dr. Shim immediately expressed she was sorry "to be the bearer of bad news" that he had Stage 3 CKD before conducting any further diagnostics. When asked about life expectancy, she was unable to provide any clear answers and just told us to keep an eye out for when his hip bones start protruding due to muscle/weight loss. After a second blood test, his creatinine levels dropped and Dr. Shim now said he had Stage 2 CKD. Upon doing our own research into IRIS guidelines, we learned that it is not recommended to diagnose or stage CKD without testing their blood levels over a significant amount of time. Dr. Shim also did not recommend an ultrasound or any other diagnostics after the second blood test/ urine culture and concluded the diagnosis. When we expressed concerns with the rushed diagnosis, she then mentioned we could see a specialist to rule out a potential cancerous growth, which was never brought up as a possibility. We went back to our usual vet for additional blood work and an ultrasound. Long story (not so) short, Owen's kidney's are in healthy condition and he most definitely does not have 75% loss of kidney function. It is frustrating to know we could've avoided going through the five stages of grief altogether if we received the appropriate care at Southpaw. While I can only speak on my experience with Dr. Shim, I write this to urge others to seek a second opinion and do your own research if you find your experience parallels ours in any way. Always advocate for diligent and thorough care for your fur babies. read more

About a year ago I had a not so pleasant experience at our last vet so I decided to find another one. Based on Yelp reviews, I went with Southpaw Vets. I am so happy we did! I have moved out of the area but still bring my Sparkle here because Southpaw is IT! The staff is just phenomenal. Dr Chiang is our primary and she is literally so sweet, calm, patient, knowledgable, and really cares about our fur babies. I also recently saw Dr Shim (who was also lovely) because I needed to get in urgently as Sparkle was sick. They got me in next day! The techs are also fab. So gentle with my bb girl and compassionate. The front desk staff are wonderful too! Friendly, very quick to pick up phones/answer texts, and relay any questions we have to the doctors. The office itself is so clean and modern. There's a parking lot in the back that always has spots available. Just go down the alley to find it. The entrance is also back there so super convenient. They also write your fur baby's name on the white board in the exam rooms - it's so cuuuute! I cannot explain how grateful I am to this business. I recently switched to Southpaw from my previous vet because they were very impersonal and didn't seem to prioritize the pet. After doing extensive online research, I stumbled upon Southpaw and booked my first appointment online (already something I like as my other vet didn't offer this) very quick and easily. A couple days before the appointment, they personally texted me to remind me of the appointment and ask details about my pet, so they can ensure a personalized experience, and sent me forms to sign digitally to minimize the paperwork upon my arrival. Upon arriving - I was concerned about parking, as it is on Ventura and we all know parking can be scarce there. To my pleasant surprise - they have ample parking in the back of the building, so I didn't have to stress about that. Once I went inside, the front desk staff were super courteous in checking me in. The wait time was minimal - and the technician took me and my cat Shiva inside the room. I love that the room was specific to cats only - it had a Feliway pheromone diffuser plugged in, Temptations cat treats, and Churu puree treats to ensure she was happy and comfortable. There was a white board with her name customized on it welcoming her, super cute. Two technicians came in to take her temperature and ask me some initial questions for the reason of my visit (I love that there were two, one to pet her and keep her calm, and the other to do temperature) -- they also took it via her ear vs. the oh so unpreferred method - which kept her level of stress at a minimum. The vet (Dr. Chiang) then came in and was super nice. She started by offering Shiva catnip and proceeded to give her Churu treats and petting her to earn her trust. The amount of time she set aside for the visit was something I am not used to, so I was very impressed that I didn't feel rushed or just a number. She went over treatment options, and even gave us a couple toys to take home with us, while providing a complimentary nail trim. I felt seen and listened to as a customer and that me and my pet were number one priority throughout the whole visit. They've converted me to switching to this vet's office permanently for all 3 of my cats needs in the future. Thank you to the team! I visited Southpaw last month on the recommendation of a friend. While the drive was a bit long for me, I can honestly say it was worth it. I have two cats, one old and one young, and taking them to the vet has never NOT been traumatic for all 3 of us. But I heard that Southpaw has dedicated exam rooms and treatment areas just for cats that dogs aren't even allowed to pass through, so I gave it a shot. The experience was beyond my expectation. First of all, the brought us to a bright and clean room immediately, so we werent left to wait in the lobby where a couple dogs were. The exam room was like kitty Shangri-la. There was a cozy cat tree and a warm towel sitting on the exam table with catnip sprinkled on it. I could have cried. The technician who took us in, Andrew was really kind and soft spoken. He just opened the carrier doors and told me that the cats could come out when they were ready (!!!) No pulling or dumping them out like we had experienced in the past. We talked and he got some basic info. My younger cat was curious and came right out. Andrew took his temp with an ear thermometer (yes! ear!) and listened to his heart and weighed him. He gave him lots of gentle pets and offered him Churu. Safe to say that my cat was like puddy in his hands after that. My older cat didn't want to come out, so he didn't force it and just did what he could with her in the carrier, and then left some treats and toys in it with her. He told me that we could go slow with her and that he could get the weight, etc later. Ok and this is only like 5 minutes into the visit! I just was so impressed with the intake process. Everything was so thoughtful and cat-oriented. Dr Braham saw us and was seriously the best. She listened and and made really reasonable recommendations but I never felt pushed. She also explained things I'm a way I hadn't experienced before and it made me really feel informed. She was great with both cats and was extra gentle with my shy older girl. Their exams were so thorough. Like, she checked everything and asked so many good questions. They ended up having blood work done and vaccines updated since it had been so long since they'd been seen. An assistant named Sara came in and went over all the pricing with me and made sure I understood everything and didn'talw me feel badly when I declined a couple items. Andrew came back with a second tech named Sarah and they offered to do what was needed for the kitties in the room with me, which I thought was so nice. But I declined haha. Honestly at that point I had total confidence in the staff and wasn't worried to send my cats with them. They updated me about 20 minutes later and let me know that the cats did great and were just a little nervous but loved Churu so they used it to help them be at ease. Writing this I'm realizing another thing I loved about this vet office: EVERYONE introduced themselves (and wore name tags) and called me and my cats by name when referring to us. It was just a really nice oersonable touch. The receptionist who checked us in and brought us to the room was the same one who checked us out. Her name was Elsy and she made sure the lobby was clear of any dogs before having my cats brought out. I was so so happy with the visit, and when I got home I noticed that the techs had put extra Churu and cat toys in our to-go bag. They also sent some sedatives to give my older cat before her next visit so she would beore at ease. The next day, Dr Braham emailed me about the blood tests and there were a couple issues that she talked me through. My older girl is going to need some additional care and I am so relieved I found this place and really feel supported. I am so grateful to the doctors and staff here. Very informative and patient, allowing me time to ask as many questions as I wanted. Her recommendations were thoughtful but she also helped to prioritize treatments so I could decide what's a need vs nice to have done. I appreciate that they did not push you to do things. I transfered my cats here from Sherman Oaks Vet Group, based on a recommendation from the emergency room specialist at ASEC. I'm glad I did. This place is very nice. The patient rooms are set up to put cats at ease with Feliway, calm music, heating pad on the exam table, and Churus. It makes the visit much easier on my cats. I also recently had to euthanize my terminally ill cat, and they were really wonderful. There is a nice separate room for that with comfy chairs and a button you can press to let them know to come in. Im hoping to build relationships with the doctors so I can bring my pets here foe years to come. Parking is easy in the back. read more

Today we brought in our Sadie whose 14 years old. She's having early dementia symptoms and excessive urination. I was able to get an appointment next day. The front desk are soooo nice. The facility is spacious and super clean. Our exam room had a "welcome Sadie" sign which was a nice touch. Dr Cortez helped us. So nice and helpful. She gave her a few treats and off she went for blood work. During this time I used the very clean bathroom and fixed myself a coffee. This place really understands customer service and customer experience. A short time later we were done and on our way with medication for anxiety and dementia. Lab results are forthcoming. As we were checking out I noticed someone was in our exam room cleaning and disinfecting it for the next client. That was a first for me. It's not exactly cheap but I feel they provide value for services. Of course I'll be back and recommend this practice to my friends and associates. read more

I really love this vet. When I got my dog almost two years ago, I wanted to find a vet that had transparent pricing before I even booked an appt. Southpaw has a bulk of their prices online so you know exactly what to expect for most visits and of course they go over final cost/options before you get a service done. The staff is always friendly from the front desk, vet techs, and to the vets. I've seen two vets so far and both have offered the same quality of service. I love that they have treats ready (although my pup loses interest in snacks when she knows she's about to be examined), but she loves getting a new toy every visit. They do their best to help my (suddenly) anxious (only during the vet visit) dog build trust during each visit. I appreciate that the office is clean and rarely has any pet smells. In general I feel I get seen on time and I'm usually out the door in 30-60 mins depending on what's needed during the appt. We were new to the area so they only cared for my baby Rooks a couple of times, but I was always impressed by how clean and aesthetically pleasing the office was. And my Rooks, who would always have a near breakdown at the vet was surprisingly calm and relaxed in their office. I also found their prices very fair and lower than what I thought they would be compared to other vets I've been to. Another amazing experience at Southpaw. I was able to snag a last minute vet tech appointment to get my dogs nails trimmed and I believe our technician was Glenda. (I apologize if I got the name wrong I tried to sneak a peak of her name tag so I could write this review). My dog is almost 11, he doesn't like many people, I'm probably his most trusted ally. When he came out of the nail trim he wasn't panting, he wasn't scurrying to get to me, he wasn't growling or whining, he was comfortable in her arms. She handed him to me and and both her and him were chill. I don't think she will understand how remarkable that was for us. My dog is truly everything to me so to anyone at Southpaw that does read this I hope you let the vet tech, Glenda, know that she made this little guy feel safe today. And here's to hoping she has a wonderful week - I know I couldn't be as calm, incredible, and remarkable doing what she does. Not my first time coming here but just solidified the fact that this is the absolutely best Veterinary Hospital ever!!!! Today, my little girl Frankie underwent spay surgery. They offered a pre comfort pack to help her ease into the procedure. It not only calmed her pre-surgery,but her post recovery was quick and easy. Everyone was so supportive and kind. I have had many dogs and have moved around the country numerous times and have had great vets. Such caring and accommodating staff! I've been going here for over a year now for my dog and every visit has always been helpful and hospitable. Dr Chiang is always straightforward, transparent, and collaborative; she's never tried to order extra tests or procedures, and doesn't try to nickel and dime line items, like I've experienced in other practices. The techs are skillful and knowledgeable, and everyone always treats my pup like the princess she is. I really like this facility, and actively recommend this place to my friends looking for a new vet. The space is clean and well maintained, there's ample parking in the back, and there's plenty of treats to keep your dog from freaking out. Dr. Braham is truly rare. She gave me six more months with my cat when no one else would try, and she was so real and compassionate when it came time to face the worst news of my life. I'll forever be grateful, and I'll def be bringing my other cat to her. read more

During the almost 2 years of bringing my then 12+ year old Dalmatian in for treatment both he and I had the amazing experience of a kind, knowledgeable, and caring staff. Together, with their help and care, my dog was able to live out his last 2 years in comfort. Dr. Shim was always forthcoming and honest about how to help my dog and what to expect. She was always available to speak with when needed. When it was time for him (Spencer) to cross over the Rainbow Bridge, and as hard as that day was, the staff and Dr. Shim were so empathic and kind. Southpaws is AMAZING! The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the clinic is modern and very clean. Their rooms are cat-friendly with calming diffusers, treats, and toys which I greatly appreciate for my nervous cat Luna. Dr. Chiang is so kind, knowledgeable, and patient. I take Luna in for check-ins and when she needed a tooth extraction, they were wonderful. They eased my worries, kept me informed, and answered all my questions promptly within their business hours. I had been looking for a new vet to go to and landed on Southpaw Vets based on recommendations. I took my dog Terry there yesterday for an exam and two vaccines. We were there at 10:30 am and I appreciated that the lobby wasn't filled with people and dogs. Usually, that makes my dogs more apprehensive and this signaled to me that Southpaw spaces out appointments so every patient gets the care and focus they deserve. Terry was nervous, which is unlike him, and both the vet tech and Dr. Shim made him feel as comfortable as possible during his visit. Dr. Shim distracted him with treats so she could complete the exam, thoroughly. She was so kind and patient. The ladies at the front desk also gave Terry a bandana with aromatherapy scents to help relax him, which was such a nice gesture. The facility was very clean and serene. Even the art on the walls was cute! I'm so happy to have found Southpaw and I'll be taking my other dog here as well. read more

I brought my three cats to Southpaw Vets for their first wellness exam. I discovered my two younger cats both had periodontal disease. One cat needed 10 teeth, removed the other nine and had quite an infection. This was very distressing, but everyone at Southpaw Vets went above and beyond to make the experience as easy and helpful and informative as possible. They even helped me get it covered by my insurance, by reaching out to the insurance company directly to make sure they had all the proper paperwork. When I was struggling to give the medication to my cats, they sent one of their nurses that volunteered to come to my house and help me. I couldn't recommend them more. They truly love animals and they are kind people. It was an amazing first experience, even though we went through so much. They continued to update me, check on us, until my cats were in a healthy place again. If you're looking for a new vet, I definitely say Southpaw is a top choice. read more
