We decided to stay outside of NOLA during our travels, and searched several menus before deciding on Southside. The Irish Channel Gumbo is what helped us make our decision. It was very good! I got half a shrimp muffuletta and couldn't even finish half of it! My husband got the seafood combo and was really impressed with the fried oysters and sweet potato fries. We also got Bread pudding to go. The restaurant was packed on a Friday night around 5:30, but we didn't have much of a wait. The food earns this place 3-4 stars easily. Ate dinner there tonight. This was my 3rd visit. It's a hometown, feel-good, comfort food type place w/unique decor (model planes, antique guns, Katrina flags, etc.). You can't go wrong with ANYTHING beefy - French Dip, loaded fries, RB poboy... it's delicious. I recommend the French Dip. Order a side of fries because you'll want more to dip into the Au Jus. Service is usually really great. It was maybe 3/5 stars last visit, but maybe they were short staffed... For a good meal, this is definitely worth the few minutes drive off of the common Slidell stops of Gause or Airport Road. Take the Old Spanish Trail or Fremaux exit - only 2-3 minutes off of those. Bring your beer drinkers - great options at the bar! read more

After living in Slidell for 20+ years I finally decided to eat at Southside Cafe. Not sure why I waited so long. Overall a fantastic place to dine in my opinion. Great look and atmosphere. There were many fantastic menu choices and my food and the service did not disappoint! Top notch! Very happy with this part of my visit!! My only let down was shear negligence of the COVID protocols of wearing masks and social distancing. Very very rarely did I see ANY employee with a mask. This includes hostesses, cooks, servers and bartenders. Social distancing seems to be an afterthought as well. ESPECIALLY at and around the bar area. They do advertise all these precautions are being taken, yet in my observations, they are not. I definitely will be back but only after this COVID crap is over. We stopped here on our way to Nevada from Florida. I hopped on yelp and the reviews for Southside Cafe were great so we pulled in. We decided to do take out because we have our Great Dane with us. There are 5 of us and we ordered the seafood gumbo, the Ruben, the corn beef po' boy the Buffalo chicken sandwich and the Pontchartrain pig. There was not a bad meal between them. They were all delicious but the seafood gumbo was definitely the star of the show. I wish I had taken pictures but when we opened the bag and smelled the food we couldn't wait to dive in. This place is really good. There is nothing bad on the menu. I've tried a few thing, one that sticks out to me is the salads. I have tried the chef and muffaletta salad and let me tell you it is a lot! Very generous proportions. Only bad thing for me it's so far away but it is well worth the drive. Just tried the french onion soup the other night and it was delicious. The boat drink is always good if you are in need of a drink. But you have to go a few times to try everything. We stopped in for a quick lunch on our way home with 8 kids and 10 adults coming home from a baseball tournament. Carley waited on us and absolutely CRUSHED it. Our first time here, we started off with soup. I ordered the cup of chicken and sausage gumbo that tasted delicious but a lot of rice. Hubby had the 3 bean turkey which he said was very good. Next I had the Big Mo Jamma sammie and it was delicious! The chicken looked shaved not sliced, but that was ok w/ me. Very soft bread, the roast beef was fantastic! We shared a side of fries that came out warm, not piping hot so they became colder fast. Also had the bacon bloody Mary that was pretty good, I had to add lots of tobasco. Hubby got a Reuben which looked and tasted great, he really enjoyed it. He had a regular bloody mary and said the flavor was there but both our drinks were on the weaker side. To end our meal, for dessert we shared a peach cobbler a la mode. It had good flavor although was mushy, I would not recommend it. The ice cream tasted like French vanilla and was the best part about it. Our waiter I think named Brian was nice, attentive and helpful. As an "outsider," it was fun to watch the playful interactions between staff and patrons. Of course, you see "regulars" in all businesses, but this type of playfulness and friendly banter was happening at every table. My father and I ride motorcycles every Wednesday night. Coming from Kenner, we look for places at least 30 min away to ride to and grab some dinner. This week we decided to come here. On Wednesday nights they have a bike night. The lot is packed with bikes. it's a great time. We ride with 4-6 other people so we usually have a large group with us. They have plenty of space to accommodate large crowds the girls serving here are pretty friendly. I was with 5 men over the age of 50. The server kept calling me mam. I'm only 2- years old. It was nice of her and showed that she had manners. She probably thought I was a lot older since I was with so many older men. Or even that one of them was my husband and I was a "kitten". (young girls that like much older men). Anyways, we've come here a few times before and I never got around to writing a review, but it's a pretty fun place. The food is not bad but it's not spectacular either. Maybe I haven't found the right foods to eat yet, but I'll keep trying something different until I do. Regardless, I'll still come back. Went here for lunch on Saturday. From New Orleans driving through. Had a 15% deal with our yelp app. Couldn't pass it by. It was loud and busy but we were sat very quickly. We started with Killa Fries. Entrées were Chicken Wings, Honey Island Chicken Sandwich, Big Mo Jamma Sandwich, and mac and cheese. And last but not least Dessert, Pops Fried French Toast. All of the food was great. A little sad that the sandwiches don't come with a side of fries. The "French Toast" is def not french toast. It was so good. Love the whiskey sauce! Only reason they dont get 5 stars is because of the waitress. She seemed lost and didn't keep up with us. She however did bring anything we asked, once asked for. Wow wow wow with a side of YES PLEASE! Stopped into Southside Cafe on a recommendation from a friend, so I had no idea what to expect. This was my first time in Louisiana, and I already thought I'd died in the torrential downpour. I entered Southside sopping wet hungry enough to eat my own limbs. I was literally chewing on my arm when the waitress seated me. Anyhow, the food delicious. For appetizers we had the crawfish balls which was enough to hold us over for the main meals. I had the fried oyster muffaletta and my buddy got the salmon. Pro tip: unless you're name is Paul Bunyan, get the half order of the muffaletta. To top it off, this place must have been started by a veteran because there is military memorabilia on every square inch of the walls. What a gem of the place read more
