American Airlines - Things you get to look at on flight

I've been flying for about 40 years. Typically fly from/to GSP which is a FANTASTC airport…read more American Airlines personnel treated me with respect and were very helpful except that counter personnel in Durango, CO tried to charge me for a bag for which I had already prepaid. Recently took a vacation which required a plane change at DFW. Outbound flights were uneventful. En route home the original flight was delayed for hours due to a crew shortage so I was going to miss my connection in DFW. Then I was told DFW was on a ground stop due to weather but was then told by counter personnel that DFW was "flying again". They booked me on a later connection as a precaution at my request. Great right?? Not really. Upon arrival I deplaned into a real dung show at the American terminal at DFW. First, my connection was delayed for 2 hours then CANCELED. I received e mail updates from American about 5-6 hours AFTER THE FACT. Again, American personnel at DFW were excellent and helpful BUT the rebooking line was 2.5 hours long. After waiting in that line ( folks were telling me that no one was answering the help line and the app wasn't functioning, I saw one person get through to them on the phone) I was given a standby pass on an am flight the next day and told that all flights to GSP the next day were full. I was told to check with the rebooking counter about 7 am the next day. About 3 am the next day I stood in the rebooking line for another hour and received a confirmed boarding pass on the am flight. That flight had 9 standby passengers and I saw one person receive a confirmed boarding pass. Throughout the prior evening I saw folks holding standby passes denied boarding and told to return to rebooking lines to try again. These lines averaged 2-3 hours in duration. Weather happens but American Airlines seemed to be quite dysfunctional at DFW. On the last flight home to GSP we were an hour late ( about 40 minutes onboard a hot plane) because we didn't have a pilot! The First Officer apologized for the heat telling us the APU wasn't functioning so there would no air till we were airborne. When the pilot arrived he apologized telling us he thought he was flying somewhere else that day and had to hotfoot it across the airport to staff our flight! I have written this review as factually as possible devoid of emotion. Nearly forgot: One checked bag didn't make the flight at DFW and was delivered to my home the next day. Bag claim personnel at GSP told me that the lady in front of me was missing her bag which contained a WEDDING DRESS.

Food is OK, not spectacular in first class. Service is good, but certainly not as good as other…read moreairlines. The fold out beds were great and did allow us to get several hours sleep.

United Airlines - My flight was delayed three times. I lost quality time with my friends because of United Airlines! South West or anything else is better.

Checked in at the United Airlines counter to check my bag (I had already checked in the day before…read morefor my flight via the United App - but had forgotten to add my bag to the check in). I went through the usual process of using the computer terminal to check in the bag - things were realllllllyyyyyy sloooooowwwww that day. It felt like their computer system was dialing another location via a 2400 baud modem. So it took a while waiting for each screen to do its thing. Eventually I got the bag checked. The United representative was very nice. If the computer system weren't so slow I would've given United a higher rating!

Gotta fly with someone. Depending on where you go you don't always have a ton of options. Least…read moreinternationally but United isn't the worst option. Economy plus is a huge increase over economy. Least state of mind wise. Economy is the plus on other airlines from my experience. Business and first get into the same category as everyone else. This new Polaris is still too new for me to make a call on. Apart from delays what can you control on ANY airline? Few gates for United in this terminal. American and Southwest further down. Flights direct from Chicago here. Dulles too I believe. Depending on where you go United may be your best bet. Fifty seaters jets but most directs are fairly short. Staff works hard! From Orlando you can get direct service to Denver or Chicago. Mostly SW, Frontier, and American flying in, but United is a good option also. A lot of the airline too fly with is price dependent and route dependent. Good thing Orlando is large with nearby Disney resorts. But one downside is food. Planes are restocked immediately after landing. Sometimes that means food could be sitting for 2-6 hours before heading out again. Not the freshest. Rather fly United out of Denver than Chicago O'hare or Newark. One terminal over multiple. But you really can't review the airline off of the airports they are in. Nothing they control necessarily.
