This is the worst airline in the world. The passengers are the worst, the service is the worst and I only fly it when I'm super desperate.

So cool to get to do this on the Big Island. Sometimes I get confused returning the car and the change of airports. Did you know that abstract collab, consisting of Hilo abstract artist Kristie Fujiyama Kosmides, Hilo filmmaker Tracey Niimi and ukulele virtuoso, Jake Shimabukuro creates multimedia project, including murals at Hilo International airport, to show the island it is more than just a place to visit, get inspiration. Allow time to check it out next time you're here! Lets get back to ITO, omg the wood/Koa furniture reminds me of small kid time, I had the exact kine wood sofa too, it just brings back great memories, it sure brings me joy every single time I land here. hehe. besides that, feeling nostalgic and like old school, I just love this small kine, airport. Love it every time I see the "ALOHA" sign made out of white rocks upon exiting, I know we are here at Hilo especially with the morning rain and chilly weather once we get out of the airport. Another reason I love ITO, so convenient to get our rental car just right across the airport. Hilo International airport known as General Lyman Field, is on the eastern side of the Big Island. This airport serves the district of Hilo, Hamakua, Kau and Puna. I can't get lost here, like I normally do at other airports, once we land-we head downstairs, exit the airport & off to enjoy our adventures! Hilo airport is one of my favorite airport ever, make time to hang out and enjoy the most amazing historical and comfortable furniture!

Keep in mind there is no snorkeling on this excursion and the area around the Hilton is not safe or appropriate for snorkeling. I am writing the review solely on the lava field excursion part. My wife was very dissapointed that there was no snorkeling as we purchased new snorkeling equipment. Roxy was our tour guide and was probably the most knowledgeable and professional tour guide we have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Roxy was knowledgeable in the history of volcanoes on Hilo and elsewhere, horticulture, bird species, animals, Hawaiian culture, tourist attractions, history of the Hawaiian Islands, tribes and Capt. Cook, beaches, teachings, burial practices and so much more. Roxy told stories of the early days in Hawaii and how it evolved. Also as a noted her driving and safety practices were impeccable. If you are planning to come to Hilo you must make it a point to reach out to Roxy. We spent approximately 8 hours on the tour and it was so enriching although the lack of snorkeling was a dissapointment . Highly recommended Mahalo

I'm hoping they will get this sorted out because we do need more options and competition for inter-island flights. I had booked my flight through United and while it did say that my return flight from Hilo was through Southern Airways, when I tried to check in on United's website it said I couldn't and had to check in on some other airlines website, the name which I can't remember now. I tried to check in on that other airline's website but there was no place to check in. I also tried visiting Southern Airways' website but there was no place to check in either. When I called United they did some digging and confirmed that it was Southern Airways and they gave me a different confirmation number to try and check in on United's website. That didn't work so I decided to just check in at the airport. I had never heard of Southern Airways so I was hoping to find their ticket counter but there obviously wasn't any there. I ended up asking an employee of Hawaiian Airlines at their ticket counter and they said that Southern Airways is Mokulele and that I'd have to take a 10 minute walk over to the helicopter terminal where they are located. This caused some stress because it was about 45 minutes before my departure time. The walk over took less than 10 minutes so that was a welcome relief. I feel that much of the confusion could have been avoided if United just noted on the itinerary something like; "This flight is operated by Mokulele Airlines. Check in at the helicopter terminal..." and given an address. From here on the experience got a lot better although I did have to pay $20 for my roller carry-on bag. Having such a small terminal with few passengers and a small airplane definitely has its advantages and having no TSA security checkpoint was also a very nice change. Our plane landed and a few passengers deplaned along with the co-pilot. After a few minutes of waiting for their luggage to be removed and brought to the terminal we then followed the Co-Pilot to the aircraft and hopped on board. After a very short taxi down the runway we were airborne within seconds. A nice thing about flying on a small prop-driven aircraft is that they fly at a lower elevation and the pilot also flew along the coast line so we were treated to some nice views of the island. Flying to Maui didn't take long at all and while it was very windy there the pilot did a great job setting the plane down. Deplaning was just as quick and easy as getting on board. Overall it was a new and pleasant experience and now that I'm more familiar with the airlines and terminal I wouldn't hesitate to fly Mokulele again.

Time of stay: 8-11 Mar 2014 Weather: Tropical low (think 1-2 in/hour rain for 22 of 24 hours for 3 days) Sierra (the homeowner) makes this house feel like home! Without such a grand house, I doubt that our solid-rain visit would have been as pleasant and successful as we'd hoped! By comparison, we visited the hotels on Hilo Bay and to a one, they were all rundown, shabby, and uninspiring. One master bedroom with a generous bathroom, one bedroom with a full hallway bath, and a double-bed futon in the family room, plus a full kitchen and screened, covered, walk around porch make this house fully functional for 6. Cable TV proves that 50+ Time-Warner channels provides nothing worth watching (grin), but it comes with WiFi. Bring a HDMI-HDMI cable to port your Netflix to the TV. There are games, books and magazines as well. The kitchen is stocked with all normal utensils and often condiments from prior visitors, but you'll want to do your own grocery shopping. Sierra will leave some items for you upon arrival - fruit, nuts, candies, etc. With the tea candles, it makes for a very lovely arrival after a long trip to Hilo. The view from the rear porch is nothing short of mesmerizing! You will be looking out over your own small waterfall and pond, safe for swimming, 20 feet below your deck. The trek to the pond is a bit challenging, but those without severe joint disease or a walking aid can make it. I recommend "beach shoes" for swimming. Wake up to brew some 100% Kona coffee, fry up some eggs and ham, and you'll be ready to take on a day of sight-seeing, knowing that your home-away-from-home is just 30 minutes away to wash and dry your clothes, have a nice meal (or drive 5-10 minutes to any of the good restaurants in town), and enjoy a great night's rest. Sierra also provided a rental vehicle - Honda CRV van. Plenty of room for 6 with luggage. The back-up camera is essential for backing into the 10%-grade (down) driveway, or you can park on a gravel lot at the top of the hill. You can't miss the coco frogs, as they make their presence known - very loudly - all night long. Combined with the falls - and our errant tropical storm - I was awakened just once. The majority of the time the sound was welcome "white noise." In fact, I cannot recall when I'd been so rested on a vacation! This was the nicest rental I can recall in 12+ years of travel in CONUS and abroad. (Note - Don't miss the air tours over the volcano, as you cannot see the lava from the ground, due to a recent change in lava flows. If helicopters aren't your thing, the locals have a Part 135 (airline level) service using 4 and 7-person Cessnas. As a GA pilot myself, I knew to look for these, and we much-preferred this tour to helicopter. It is also MUCH cheaper and you will see the same or more.)

Unfortunately, the owner had double booked the house by mistake... so we had to stay the first night in the ground-floor level of the house. We were hoping it wouldn't end like a horror film with us murdered. When we woke up the next morning and went outside, we were blown away by the beautiful greenery, fruit trees, and waterfall. When we moved to the upstairs of the house, we found a beautiful spa-like home with everything you could want and more in a Hawaii getaway. Besides the slight hiccup on our first night there...the rest of the stay was wonderful. Next time we visit the Big Island, we will definitely make sure to stay at Aloha Falls again.

The bonus is that the man that runs the show here, John, is incredible! We were doing a backpacking trip at trailhead known for break-ins and John let us store our luggage here while we hiked and camped. When we came back, it was waiting for us in our rooms, I almost never receive service this good anywhere, let alone at a hotel this affordable! John is also one of those rare people you meet in the service industry that isn't just into making quaint small talk for the sake of it. He doesn't robotically recommend things everyone knows about. He really knows every nook and cranny of the island! Everyone else we told about our hiking trips on the island just met us with puzzled looks. John had done those hikes and had useful information to contribute about those hikes. Stuff you couldn't get with just a Google search. I LOVE competent and friendly people that know exactly what they are talking about! So many folks these days just run their mouths in a desperate attempt to make conversation, whether what they are saying is actually useful (or even true). John, if you read this, and ever come to Alaska, look us up, we'd be happy to do the same for you!

Everyone we interacted with was friendly, welcoming, and genuinely kind. A special shoutout to Charla at the front desk. She was professional, patient, and handled a difficult guest with grace while still making everyone else feel taken care of. Employees like her really make a difference. The location is beautiful. The ocean views are amazing, there's plenty of parking, and it's a nice area to walk around and enjoy the scenery. Our room's AC worked great, which was much appreciated after spending time outside. The hotel itself is clean but could use some updating. I think it would be nice to modernize certain areas while still preserving the Hawaiian history and charm that gives the property its character. There are also a few maintenance items that could use attention. For example, our towel rack was very loose and some bathroom finishes were showing wear. We also really enjoyed WSW | The Steakhouse. The service was excellent, and the bartender was knowledgeable and made great recommendations. First off, the Lobby area is absolutely beautiful and parts of the Restaurant is still under construction. However, the rooms are dated.. extremely dated. We had three rooms for our Family, all on the 8th floor, and our room smelled of straight mildew as soon as we opened the door. Unfortunately we couldn't keep the door open to air it out as it was also extremely humid and there were swarms of termites on the balcony. The wallpaper was bubbling all over the walls, and the rug and chair fabric looked as if it were better to just toss. The minifridge was also busted.. it would freeze all our beverages that weren't placed in the freezer. Annoying but I'd rather it be frigid than warm. The bed was very comfortable and clean.. as well as the bathroom. No signs of rust or mold. No bugs were seen in the room. Front desk was flustered when we checked up, there were a lot of activities in Hilo town this past weekend so although they weren't overly friendly, they weren't rude. Parking is onsite but of course first come first serve. It's nice that they have a garage under as well but if you miss snagging a space, there's street parking. It was a great visit for us so we do recommend it if you get your room at a decent rate. The property is very well kept and the elevators are relatively fast but the location itself is very convenient to everything you need to do.
