So they've obviously changed a lot over the past year. The change to no free bags doesn't affect my wife or I since we are A-List preferred, but it was a bad change. Boarding now takes a crazy amount of time as everyone is trying to carry their houses with them to put in overhead storage. Even with them refitting their planes with larger bins - still a huge hassle. The boarding by groups has also become problematic as people in the groups now 'muscle' their way to the front - because they want to ensure overhead space. More chaos now than with A, B and C boarding by space numbers. We are in Phoenix today and the gate area and seating is microscopic - literally. More people standing than seats existing. The airline is going downhill which is sad because we've been loyal members for years. read more

Flew Southwest Airlines from Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) to Buffalo (BUF). I've flown Southwest for years and generally appreciate the efficient boarding process, friendly crews, and overall no-nonsense experience. That said, open seating has always been the weak link for me. On this particular flight, service was noticeably lacking. A flight attendant remained seated for an unusually long stretch, with little visibility or engagement, which stood out given Southwest's typically attentive service culture. It was surprising and disappointing, especially since this has not been my usual experience with the airline. Overall, Southwest remains a solid, mid-level carrier that gets you where you're going without frills. Recently flew Southwest from Phoenix to Nashville and while it was not a bad experience perse, the boarding and gate agents were a bit hectic in their announcements, bag checks and overall communication with guests and especially each other. The gates at PHX are already energetic and crowded, so boarding is always an uphill battle. I purposely upgraded my group to 1 to avoid waiting and fighting the later groups. This also gave me comfort with overhead baggage, which they were super tight on for this flight. So tight that it delayed boarding when they continued to allow people to board in the later groups with large roller bags. Even though they made the announcements multiple times, they never acted on it. Again, all the above was what I witnessed, and while the delay impacted me from a timing perspective, it did not do much to "ruin" or detract from my overall experience. Overall, I am a Southwest loyalist and enjoyed the direct flight from PHX to BNA! read more

I recently flew roundtrip with Southwest Airlines as I returned from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport PHX but originated from Hollywood Burbank Airport BUR. They had been my favorite domestic carrier for years (I wished they flew internationally!) until Alaska Airlines dethroned them. Southwest Airlines cornered the southwest and west coast air traffic markets, respectively. Did this airline still rule the southwest skies!? PURCHASE Roundtrip Wanna-Get-Away Airfare ($207.95): Nowadays, I booked one-way flights because I usually had more flexibility when I needed to return. However, I had a definite travel window on this recent vacation/business trip, so it made sense for the roundtrip option. Since I booked the flight three months before its departure, I felt this fare was fairly reasonable (an average $104.00 each way) for domestic air travel during the medium season (I traveled right before the Memorial holiday weekend). On an evening direct flight that arrived in Burbank just after 10:00pm the same day, it was all good. Checked Luggage - 2 Pieces Allowed (FREE; N/A this instance): I traveled very light especially for a quick trip such as this, so I only had a carry-on and backpack. As of this review, Southwest Airlines has since started charging for checked luggage as all airlines did. FLIGHT EXPERIENCE ~Check-in: I checked-in online 24-hours prior (Group B Position 08!), had my QR code boarding pass on their app, and traveled with only a carry-on and backpack, so I was ready to go! Southwest Airlines is our go to choice when traveling. Always easy straightforward with cost or fees and love that they include 1 checked bag per flyer. (50lbs or less) We took flights from Phoenix Sky Harbor out to Dallas then to Myrtle beach and also flew with them back from our trip and stopped in Chicago. The 737 is pretty spacious compared to AA and I had one carry on that was stowed above in the overhead compartment and my backpack fit comfortably under the seat in front. I really appreciated that they have usb and usb-c charging ports on the chairs to ensure I had full charge while enjoying their free in flight entertainment/ movies. The flight crew was very kind and attentive with a smile on each journey. I really like the snacks and drinks provided. Can't wait to see where we will go on our next trip with Southwest! read more

Southwest and Delta have been my go-to airlines for years. I personally have not had any serious issues with Southwest in my many years of flying. If I did encounter any, they were only miniscule things. Terminal 4 is the hub for Southwest Airlines at Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix. I do enjoy flying out of that terminal because I like the restaurants and the extra space and amenities that they have recently added. I am one of those people that still arrives two hours before my flight. This is so I do not run into issues like long security check point lines. Plus, I don't mind sitting at the airport and grabbing a coffee or some food while I wait for my flight. For me personally, the customer service has mostly been good on Southwest Airlines. I am not the biggest fan of how they do their seating assignments and would prefer to pick my seat ahead of time when booking a flight. I normally just pay the extra fee to get into group A seating. I like that I can connect and watch movies on my flights and that carry-on luggage is still free. Sadly after fifty years, Southwest Airlines' two checked bags-fly-free policy officially ends in 2025. So even Southwest is giving into the pressure of our ever-changing world. Absolutely TERRIBLE customer service. Paid the extra fees to guarantee a seat by my 4yr old and 8 yr old, they cancelled our flight due to first leg being delayed, then tried to rebook us with a 5 hr layover instead of the orig 30 minutes with my children sitting with strangers. Spent over an hour on the phone trying to get seats with my children to be told I had to pay another $600 fee due to their mistake. After multiple escalations finally got a flight out together the next morning with no apology or concern that they cost us an extra night in FL, extra parking fees and food expenses. How ironic is this? Maybe I just got used to system that SWA used in the past for making reservations and boarding the flights, and I thought that was most accommodating and convenient. But their new system is just horrible and designed to squeeze every dollar out of their customers! I made reservations for myself and my wife to fly on an itinerary. But in order for my wife and I to be seated together, we would have to pay an extra fee for that! How stupid is that??! And to make matters worse, I am now partially disabled in my old age and my wife is my "assistance partner" - she helps we with getting to my seat and for stowing my carry-on luggage. But for us to board together and sit together, we have to pay an extra fee. How greedy is that? I guess it wouldn't be bad if the fee was nominal, but they want over 50% of the fare for each leg of the itinerary!!! Holy Crap!!! Being based out of the Phoenix area, I find that Southwest Airlines and American Airlines are the most ideal airlines to fly for me. While I typically fly American Airlines, every now and then, I do find myself on a Southwest Airlines flight. While I know some big changes are on the horizon including the cost of luggage being added and assigned seating starting soon, the "no frills" concept of Southwest Airlines for better fares and the "outrageously fun" service culture intrigue me with the airlines as a customer and observer. In fact, I typically have had very positive customer service experiences whether in advance on the phone or in person at the airport. I find myself occasionally flying in and out of the Southwest Airlines gates at Phoenix Sky Harbor in the C or D gates, especially when traveling to California, Las Vegas, El Paso, or Albuquerque. Sometimes, I even find myself on further journeys. While I have never tried the A-List program before, I have membership in CLEAR and Global Entry, which help me speed through security to get to the gates. I also find myself enjoying lounges through the American Express Platinum card and/or Priority Pass program. It also provides a travel incidental which I often will use with Southwest Airlines. Traveling has become more of a hobby and habit at the same time, and using Southwest Airlines and American Airlines as two the two airlines that are most convenient for me, I can accumulate points or miles quickly for future benefits. I actually recall learning about Southwest Airlines in my business school classes way back when as it was used as a regular case study, and I loved reading books about Herb Kelleher and the early days of Southwest Airlines and its service focus not only to customers but to employees as well. After all, if your employees aren't happy, your customers certainly won't be. I recall living the Southwest Airlines experience on holidays when everyone was treated to drinks, through fun and entertaining announcements by flight attendants, and when I was younger, even being invited to pass out the peanuts (in the days well before pretzels were instead distributed). While I'm not sure what the Southwest Airlines procedures will look like in the future, I can expect great service, which is really what we're looking for (besides safe and timely flights). I look forward to continuing to check in with Southwest Airlines every now and then. read more

Southwest has Abbie's been taking it in the chin lately with their new changes. I get that change is difficult. Recently called into SW to book a flight because my computer and phone weren't responding properly. The lady in the other end (SW rep) was awful! So rude and condescending. We are asking questions for clarifications because things didn't make sense and one of her exact lines was' "you know because I am telling you" in a pretty rude way. We have flown SW for years and used their priority card etc. The point is most people just need a little education and when someone is being so rude and condescending that is not going to help Southwest cause of getting people off their backs and not being angry. When I'm connecting through Sky Harbor Phoenix, I'm using on American Airlines. This Southwest connection was also unique as when going from Reno to Des Moines, I usually go through Las Vegas or Denver. I did appreciate that for this connection, it was just a short walk between gates. The flight from Phoenix to Des Moines was full, but I did manage to snag one of those Exit area seats that had no chair in front, allowing a lot of leg room. The downside was that the guy next to me in the same row was a talker. Actually, he was a very interesting guy, and I'm sure his wife was relieved that she could have most of the flight to herself. read more

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times, Southwest Airlines is my jam!! I'm too skedddd to try any other "budget" airline like Frontier or Spirit. I have heard way too many horror stories, lol. Southwest isn't perfect, but they come pretty damn close. The Phoenix based crew is always friendly and professional. Sometimes, when I fly to/from Phoenix Sky Harbor, we don't get the complimentary drink due to turbulence. When they do serve it, I always giggle to myself because the ride is so short, they tell you to hurry it on up, stop drinking, and start chugging! The flight is barely an hour long, so they literally hand them out, then come back through the cabin and start collecting trash. I've got this routine down like no one's business. I'll continue to be a fan of SWA and hopefully fly longer than 1 hour in the near future. Houston and Jersey are calling my name! read more

I know most people don't like to fly Southwest Airlines. My wife and I do. The benefits are that you can check in via the app 24 hours prior to your flight, free luggage check, snacks, complimentary drinks, Travel Rapid Rewards, and have the friendliest (sometimes funniest) staff. I was surprised there was hardly any line flying back home to San Jose, CA. The flight wasn't as full as usual, so there were plenty of empty seats to choose from. Very enjoyable. read more

This is not a luxury experience - but to me is more reliable than other budget airlines. If the price is really really good I take Southwest - and if you search for deals the prices that can be found a few times a year are shockingly good. Search forums if your interested - but don't go too crazy with price shopping as your time also costs money in my book - that is unless you have no more future dreams or aspirations. United seems to always cancel last minute - Delta a bit high nosed - and well, Southwest - at least its not Spirit. I think the most germy places on these aircrafts are the seatbelts, headrests, tray table - so just try not to touch any of that. My least favorite seats are the ones in front of the emergency exit rows as they don't recline - I also like to avoid the far back or far front of the plane - over the wings is great your going to get a better ride. Smooth sailing. What else is there for options? You can travel by car or Amtrak - I can't comment too much on the train - seems old fashioned - romantic - and leisurely. Maybe perfect for retired people who have lots of free time. Overall of all the times I've flown Southwest I expect the worst and it just doesn't happen. One of my brothers takes more luxury flights and complains more about the people in business class. He said Paris Hilton and her husband took his spot and she was obnoxious and took his and his wife's seat. At least if you fly coach on SW you don't ever have to worry about bumping into her. read more

Other airlines make it tough. Southwest is a breeze! 2. Two checked bags (up to 50 pounds each) are free. This can save you a lot of money. 3. Staff members are friendly and fun. In 20+ years of flying on Southwest, I've only encountered one somewhat crabby flight attendant. 4. They now fly to Hawaii! They even have Hawaii sales every so often. 5. The Southwest Rapid Rewards Visa card is an easy way to rack up points. 6. You can earn Southwest Rapid Rewards through renting a car or booking a hotel through the Southwest website. Seems great so far. I've had a RR number for awhile but I haven't flown Southwest in years. Not sure why, I usually pick airline choices based on departure times I need. SW has a big section in PHX with a great variety of coffee, breakfast burritos, couple of bars, couple of shops. The usual layout although some other terminals have barely anything. Lots of seating at D gates and a nice employee helped me figure out my boarding. I don't think I should have paid for early boarding cuz I boarded w the rest of the crowd. The check in ladies were kind of annoying- asked how do I get my boarding pass on my phone CUZ THEY KEPT ASKING IF MY BP WAS ON MY PHONE BUT NO ONE SHIWS YOU HOW..... so I asked well how cuz yeah I'd love to have it on my phone... and she keeps plonking her loud hard fake fingernail on my phone screen saying well it should say download right here, bonk, here, bonk, here bonk. Then some other lady comes over and she leaves me and starts socializing w her. God such a mess.... later upstairs I went thru and downloaded the app and tried it myself and finally got the BP on my phone. My wife was supposed to come home from Nashville-Phoenix on 2/10/2026 but due to a family emergency she had to come home on 2/08/2026. Called SWA and changed dates but they had to move her seat to another window position (11-F to 11-A) when she got to the airport they gave her a boarding pass that showed a middle seat in the back of the airplane. I called SWA 800# and they told me the system was all f**Ked up and they were having problems but he said he would move her to emergency seating with another window seat. When she went to get her boarding pass at the counter by the gate they told her they still showed her in a window seat and the only window seat left would cost her $42 more. I paid for choice preferred and now was paying more. SWA is all f***ed up with this new seating policy. It's going to be a cold day in hell before we fly SWA again. Whatever has happened to SW, it's a shell of its former self. Bags fly free is gone, free internet is gone, advantages of using their credit card have decreased substantially, free use of skycaps is history, the list goes on. Yesterday (6/3), the line to check in at 7:30am was well over 90 minutes. They blamed it on a new third party baggage system. People around us missed flights. So long Southwest!!!! read more
