This was one of the best meals my husband and I have ever had! We are visiting the area for a few days and this restaurant was recommended to us. We started with a half dozen oysters and they were very good. My husband had the redfish and I had the amberjack. We finished with the bourbon blueberry cobbler. Everything was absolutely delicious! Our server was Shauna and she was excellent. Friendly and attentive. We really wanted to meet Chef Jeremiah to applaud him for his talents and to thank him for the wonderful meal. Although this place had good reviews we were disappointed. We were fairly late and the place wasn't at all busy yet it took half an hour to get our meals. I did enjoy my shrimp and grits I felt it was a small portion for the price. My wife's salad was ordinary at best. From the time we walked in, service was mediocre and indifferent. To make it all worse it was very cold inside and they weren't the least bit apologetic. Kind of, yeah we know! Overpriced in our opinion. read more

I have eaten around the world and in almost every state. Tonight I had what I think is the best meal of my life. And my girlfriend concurs with this conclusion. First of all, the service was awesome. Reynold was our server and worked to make sure our experience was fantastic. He was funny, polite, and helpful. He was there when we needed him, and left us to ourselves when he wasn't. His recommendations were also spot on. For appetizers we had the squash blossoms and the hot crab dip. Both were delicious. I highly recommend both. For entrees my girlfriend had the diver scallops. They were cooks perfectly. I had the elk tenderloin. It was absolutely the most tender meat I have ever had. It dissolved in my mouth. I would eat this every opportunity I get. And finally dessert. WOW!! She ordered the cheesecake. I had the white chocolate bread pudding. Both were made perfectly. The cream brûlée cheesecake was so creamy and light. With a nice sugar top that is as too thick. But the winner was the bread pudding. Not overly sweet. Moist with a great crunchy crust. This is now our go too restaurant. Especially for special events. This place is a hidden gem. We went for lunch and started with the hot crab dip. Delicious!!! I got the pesto salmon over risotto. It was absolutely perfect. I've been twice and enjoyed the food. The first time, the server was super sweet but there was a huge delay from the starters to entrees. He apologized and the manager came over to apologize as well. I would have thought he would have done something to make up for the long wait. In addition, we were at a 2 person high top near the kitchen door, it was a busy spot and I froze under the air vent, so the wait did not help. The second time were back in the room with fire place, much better location and great service! As for the food, the oysters are good, served on a hubcap, liked that our server gave us information on where they were from. The crab dip was delicious as well as the soup. I have not tried any salads but recommend the scallop small plate. For entrees, we've had the filet medallions, steak frites and shrimp and grits. They obviously do steak well and both dishes were cooked perfectly. I liked the shrimp and grits but am not a fan of green peppers so might not order that again. We had a chocolate torte the first time and the smores brownie the second time. I love chocolate, but these both could have used vanilla ice cream to offset the super sweetness. read more

I was so disappointed not to be able to eat at Southwood Kitchen. My friend flew in from Virginia Beach wanting this to be her place to eat. We had no idea reservations were necessary. But with only 6 people sitting at the bar and it was 530 drinkers only. No one at any table. Young ladies behind reservation table let us know at 6:00pm all tables were reserved. They would not try to fit us in. We would have been the only customers ordering food. I was disappointed and will never return. Because I feel they didnt try. read more

Update: we went here for a family birthday dinner. Table in the back by the fireplace. It still has that homey fireplace aroma that reminds you of Christmas at your grandparents' house. The food was what you would expect for the price but...My wife raved about the Wagyu. She is very rare in her food compliments and absolutely gushed about her meal, even so far as thanking me for convincing her to try it. My 8 year old had the chicken Alfredo off the kids menu and I wish it was on the adults'. The duck fat mashed potatoes are the pinnacle of comfort food and the rib-eye was appropriately priced. My eldest enjoyed her filet medallions and everyone enjoyed their meal. All plates were cleaned. However, the real star of the show was our server Ariel. The kind of service that makes you wait extra to get a table in her section. The kind of service that makes you tip extra. Believably cheerful. Attentive at the proper times. She treated my 15 year old like an adult and my 8 year old with the appropriate amount of adult ness and cuteness. "Yes, I like my ice cream better with caramel than chocolate too" kinda stuff. She made several suggestions about food and drink orders that started with "my favorite is..." and when we got them we were not disappointed. She saved the evening when she saw that my wife was hesitant about her dish when delivered. There was no mention of a mayo based sauce in the menu description. My wife has a violent aversion for anything mayo. Ariel quickly got to the issue and immediately took it back. No guilt or being affronted. Just wanting my wife to enjoy her meal(see above). The manager came by also with apology's that we rebuffed but thanked him anyway. Ariel was very professional and made us feel like we were her only table. I cannot gush enough about our server. She made all 6 of us adults want to return for another try at the Wagyu. And we'll ask for her section. read more

Small portions, big price, bad service. Had to ask waitress several times for same item, never cleared bread plates from table. The 2 couples sitting next to us had 2 servers and the manager swooning over them. They apparently got the service we didn't. Waitress was also less then pleasant. The food here is delicious and the presentation is great. We went on a Friday night about 6:30 pm and found they were quite busy; however, they gave us a wait time of about 35 minutes and it was about right. There wasn't a lot of space inside for waiting and the few chairs outside were taken. Had we not had my son with us, we likely would have stepped to the bar next door and had a drink while we waited. The restaurant does have a bar with about 20 stools. (It was full.)The hostesses were pleasant and kept us updated on our wait time or how many were ahead of us- without us even asking. Once we were seated we were greeted by a very knowledgeable server. He took great care of us and was accommodating of my 7 year old. I had the BBQ chicken and it was good. My husband had the shrimp and grits- they were divine! My son had the kids grilled chicken pasta- I tasted it- it was better than expected from a kids menu. For an appetizer we had the crab dip. It is prepared warm and served on toasted bread rounds. This dip is better than any I've had anywhere! It's light and not at all chunky or greasy. You must try it if you go! The only reason I gave 4 stars rather than 5 is because I thought the entree portions were on the small side. I had the right amount of chicken and potatoes but as for the "seasonal vegetable" of broccoli, I had only one floret. The vegetable was roasted to perfection! I would have expected a few more though. My friend who has also domed there said he found the portions on the small side too. read more
