I finally discovered that Felix's Fish Camp in Spanish Fort has no connection to Felix's Restaurant & Oyster Bar of New Orleans. I was still expecting some good seafood but that sadly wasn't the case. In the unfortunately all too common experience I have in Alabama their seafood gumbo was actually just Alabama soup that literally had no seafood other than maybe a few crab strands with a VERY watery "roux" that wouldn't be considered a roux in Louisiana. This is the all time most pathetic example of a "gumbo" I've ever been served! My Caesar salad came out with no dressing and I had to wait quite awhile before I could get that taken care of. When my Crab Stack entree finally arrived it at least looked decent but it was quite bland. The price for all this disappointment was quite substantial for such a very unfilling and unsatisfying meal. The building and location are cool which is the only positive I can report. Overall I don't see a reason to eat here again. Places like this REALLY let you know what it is like to miss New Orleans. So far in all of Alabama the only actual good gumbo I've had is at Tamara's Downtown in Fairhope while the rest has been Alabama soup. read more

I first visited Felix's in October of last year. A skating friend from Mobile, who lived in California, recommended it to me on my way back to California last year. They had the best oysters that I had ever eaten in my life. Unfortunately, it is now a different season, and those oysters are not available till the fall. But, being July, they were getting their oysters from a different vendor. I still had the dozen oysters and was not disappointed. No, they were not the same oysters as last October, but still great oysters in the Hale shell. I will definitely be back in October to capture that feeling of never having tasted one of the best oysters that I have ever eaten. read more

Excellent meal in what could've been tourist trap. Genuine Southern hospitality from host and staff on a cold drizzly day in Mobile. We were seated at a window, which overlooked the gloomy shore, but the vibrant warm atmosphere more than compensated. Our server was so friendly, well-informed and patiently advised my vegan husband on the menu and how they could accommodate his needs. All their batters, for example, are vegan as there is no egg. He was able to start with the yummy fried green tomatoes and the special truffle fries, minus the Parmesan topping. They even made him a tasty vegetable pasta with marinara. He was thrilled! Felix's is one of those places you have to adopt the mindset of "don't judge a book by its cover". The outside looks like it belongs in a shanty town in a third world country. The inside boasts of a second tier fine dining establishment, complete with nicely arranged place settings. We met family here for lunch on a Thursday. I'm not from the area, so this must draw a work crowd, because that's what we saw! We were seated at a table that unfortunately was just below the AC unit in the middle of the dining room...which dripped on me in the first 20 seconds of being seated, so we asked to kindly be re-seated. Our servers were lovely; one was in training. I do wish the table had come with bread or some sort of complimentary munchie. All of the meals were good! I had the fish tacos, which probably would have been better in a soft tortilla. Instead they came in hard shells. My husband's red fish was very good and a large portion. We eat at Felix's once or twice a year when we are in the area. The food and service are consistent and hard to beat! On our last visit, we chose to sit in the bar area and Jamey was our waitress. She was an absolute doll! We started with the baked oyster sampler. Our favorite was the casino style, so save yourself the time and just get that flavor! When they ask you about your salad choice, go with their camp salad. You will not be disappointed! I've tried to recreate it...it's just that good. For entrees, my husband and I both ordered the fish of the day (redfish). He chose grilled and I chose the blackened (which is opposite from how we usually order) and we both agreed that mine was better. His entree was still great, but the blackened had the flavor we were looking for. And we couldn't leave without dessert. The key lime pie is always a sure bet. But this time we splurged and also ordered the bread pudding. O. M. G. Soooooo delicious! If you're looking for an all-around great place to dine, Felix's Fish Camp is it. Every time we find ourselves remotely near Mobile, we make sure to visit Felix's Fish Camp. Our most recent visit was great! We had reservations but there was a glitch and our reservation wasn't on their books. The manager was very accommodating and sat us at a wonderful table after waiting only a few minutes. Our waitress was attentive very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Everything we have ever had at Felix's has been wonderful. But we love their crab soup!! Consequently, we started off with the crab soup. My son had the filet. My wife had crab cakes. I ordered the stuffed sea bass. All of it was delicious! For dessert, we had bread pudding, their version of beignets ( we used the bourbon sauce from the bread pudding for these delightful pastries) and a sundae. We went on a Monday evening right when the sun was setting and sat in the bar area for their first come first served seating. They have live music on Friday nights, make sure you make reservations because it fills up quickly. They allow walk ins and bar seating is first come first serve. If you want to enjoy the live music, opt for the bar seating. Everything I tried is really good from the seafood to the steaks, sides, salads and desserts! We only waited about 10 minutes and our food arrived hot and ready to go. We opted for the cole slaw and crab bisque for sides - both were great. The crab cakes came ontop of fried green tomatoes (good paring) hush puppies and a nice seafood sauce on the side. The cole slaw was slightly sweet and tangy - a nice touch. The fish tacos seem to be the order BINGO with 3 side by side with sour cream and a nice salsa coming along side. The plate was covered with three pork chops and grits, so much so that it was almost impossible to cut and eat because any move created a waterfall of food off of the plate. The table behind us had a loud conversation; a couple and one of the managers at Felixes were chatting about obtaining a bar license and possibly hiring a "bar contractor" to take on the responsibility. it was a lot more than I asked to learn about. We came here in December for a work dinner. There was a group of 10-12 of us. We were seated in our own room away from the main dining area. Servers came in and out salads down in front of us, which was odd because no one had ordered yet. Not even drinks. Once they were told, they immediately grabbed the salad and took them away. I never got the fries that came with my meal, but didn't complain because honestly I was so stuffed from all the delicious appetizers we had: crab claws, both fried and steamed, spinach dip, and one other one. I can't remember, but it was all so good. After the dinner, a few of us went into the main dining area to listen to live music and the server brought us drinks - something called a Krissy. Oh my lawdddd it was amazing. I did get lost going to the bathroom (no, I really did) but that's my own fault. The vibes of this place were excellent and comfortable, and the prices were way more affordable than I expected them to be.
