The food here is really good! I usually the Chicken Souvlaki plate, and it costs around 12.95. It comes with greek salad, breadsticks, a pita thing and tzaki (sp?). I've had other dishes too, and the food is really good and not that expensive. I am giving in three stars instead of 4 because the service here is not good. They always rush you. You have to adjust your expectations accordingly here. This is not fine dining, and this is not necessarily a place to branch out along the menu. This is the Souvlaki House. As such, I always get (surprise) the souvlaki. The lamb comes in big, meaty chunks, and it mixes well with the vegetables and the feta cheese on the pita. It's basic, it's cheap, and it's quick. It's also delicious. Sometimes I'll get the souvlaki plate, which comes with a salad and breadsticks. I used to live above the Souvlaki House back over 20 years ago when i went to Cornell. The place hasn't changed! The food was never fine dining but always good--like comfort food. I had the Souvlaki plate and a soup this time around. The soup didn't taste fresh-made but was still good. The lamb was of generous portion size and was nicely charred. GOATed place in Collegetown. Legitimately the only place that has reasonable prices (more than reasonable in their case). You get a tremendous amount of food without breaking the bank. Staff is all super polite. They don't try to force the interior to be something it's not. It's a great place to get a great meal in a simple environment. No hesitation to give a 30% tip when the staff is so kind and the food is so generous. Every other place in Collegetown will have that 30% already in their gaudy prices, and they won't even smile when you pick up your food. I have been to Souvlaki House many times because friends insist on eating there, and have never had a good experience with the food. The portions are admittedly very generous, but the food itself is bland. Even something as simple as a Calzone was poorly done - the ingredients were just laid in a row, not mixed up, and the dough was without flavor and tough. Fish sandwich is good, because its just fried frozen fish on a sandwich with fries. Its under $6 for a good portion. Pasta is not Al Dente, and sauces are mediocre. I think I've gotten a gyro once and it was not at all memorable. It is nice that they give salad and breadsticks for free, and the waitresses are all sweethearts. However, the food is just too boring. $10 credit card minimum. read more

The owners are really friendly and their food is quite good. Their pizza is definitely one of the best in Ithaca. I also liked their souvlaki plates and the free salad that comes with the entrees. Their moussaka is one of the best I tried outside Greece, but their (homemade) baklava is a complete disaster... The restaurant is quite old and in serious need of a new decoration. The food is okay. Its cheap so I can't complain too much. I prefer their mediterranean food like their falafels. But I would not recommend the Italian side of their menu, especially the pastas. You're better off making your own pasta with store bought sauce in the comfort of your apartment as opposed to paying for it here. No. Just no. The pizza I just had was so bad that Ragu just called me to apologize. Seriously the worst pizza I have ever had. Soggy week old Pizza Hut is better than this garbage. If I wanted someone to throw up in my mouth I would have just gone to the Syracuse Zoo and hung out with pengiuns. The crust was flavorless and raw on the inside just like the "cook" who made this. Everything about this place is "meh". I've eaten here a few times, and generally had a subpar experience with every visit. First, the seating is very tight, and the surfaces feel a little greasy. You get complimentary house salad with bread sticks, but the salad doesn't look fresh or very appetizing. The bread sticks are fresh and tasty though. I've had the lamb kabobs, and the meat was burnt so hard on the outside that I had a hard time swallowing it. Their signature dish is the chicken parm. The chicken looked and tasted like it came from the frozen section of Walmart. The pasta was watery and the sauce tasted bland. Not worth the $16. Generally a bland experience. read more

Came here for the first time and was impressed. Dated but still functional interior, most mains come with a nice Greek salad and freshly baked breadsticks. We ordered each of the shawarma plates, they were good but beware it's literally meat pita and tziki sauce. That was a little underwhelming but still the meat was delicious. First off, I never wrote a review for a restaurant before but I felt the need to sign up for a Yelp account just to review how poor Souvlaki House is. My friend and I went on a Friday evening and after being seated and passed by more that four times in ten minutes without getting water or asked for orders. The restaurant wasn't even that busy so I'll give the service rating a 1/5. After ordering the food, of which I got the Chicken Marsala and pasta on the side, I was really disappointed. The pasta was literally cooked penne with tomato sauce from the can which tasted worse than middle school cafeteria pasta. The Chicken Marsala was super bland, unseasoned, and tasted like if I just heated a few chicken breasts in a pan. My friend ordered the Souvlaki House Special and couldn't finish it. I rate the food at 1/5 only because I can't give it a zero. We left extremely unsatisfied and it killed our mood for the night. My recommendation is if you want better food for this price, Olive Garden would be a better alternative. read more

I myself am not Greek, but my new "family" after moving to Ithaca is. So, I know what homemade Greek food should taste like; I eat it everyday! I've been to Souvlaki House several times in the last few months, and the owners are really nice and the waitress is quick at bringing food and taking orders. I have not had their pizza, but I did have their souvlaki and their spanakopita. Both were not that good... we actually couldnt eat the spanakopita, even if the portion was huge it just tasted awful. The mousakka, however, it great!!! The Greeks agree with me, the mousakka is yummyyy. The portion doesnt look that big but it is enough to fill you after eating the salad and bread that comes with it. I've had the galaktoboureko and I wasn't a fan (a friend of mine made it and it was great, this was a little grainy which was odd). I had the chocolate cake and it was very good. Very chocolatey and moussey and just great. So, even after giving it 3 stars I still go to Souvlaki House about once per month. I love mousakka, and I always get it nowadays. Another one of my must visits when visiting Ithaca. It's a very casual atmosphere with a good mix of locals and students. The Greek salad is very good. I had the chicken souvlaki. I ate here a couple years ago on my second date with my current girlfriend. I'm surprised she's still dating me because the food experience was pretty awful. The veal parmagiana I got was not even real veal. It was clearly a rendition from a veal patti you would purchase from the frozen section of a supermarket. The sauce was not memorable. I also came a number of occasions before with my friends. Don't worry I didn't come willingly. I came for their lunch because my friend suggested I come for their fish sandwich special. The fish sandwich had a generic bun with a generic fish sandwich. Picture Ivy room's fish sandwich, it's almost like that, almost... I am also a fan of gyros in general. I wanted to try out Souvlaki house's gyro to hopefully redeem their status. The gyro I got was reasonably priced except for the fact that the meat wasn't lamb, wasn't even a fake lamb, it was just ground beef shaped like gyro strips. The meat was horrendous, imagine stuffing a hamburger into a pita and then covering it in bland tzatzaki sauce. Try Dafni near Port Authority in Manhattan, way better. I'd write more but I have to go eat now... surprisingly I still have an appetite after writing this review. read more

This place is terrible! They put hair in my food yesterday and then made me pay for it after I complained. The manager, however, is always rude and abrasive. This was my last visit there, but honestly the food I have gotten there previously has always been average and bland to sub-par. I was there a couple of weeks ago on a Friday night. The place was packed. We were glad we made reservations. The folks with me had different entrees, most consisting of lamb. They said it was cooked just right. I had a small pizza. The restaurant claims they invented pan pizza. I'm not sure that's true, but it was very good (and I usually don't like pan pizza). Marinara sauce was just right, not bland and not too spicy Another friend had Moussaka, he said it was excellent with large portions of meat. Their bread and salad were good and generous. Souvlaki House makes the best pizza in Ithaca. Now, you may think that I am contradicting myself, that I said the same thing about Sammy's. What I said about Sammy's is that they make the best New York style cheese pizza in Ithaca. However, the hands-down most delicious pizza made anywhere in this town comes from Souvlaki house. Their house special pizza is something spectacular. First off, the crust, always hand stretched from freshly made dough. This is the perfect foundation, as it always comes out perfectly crispy on the bottom, yet extremely moist and chewy on the inside. Even with a mountain of the greasiest toppings piled above, this crust always maintains its integrity. You could eat this pizza off your lap and have not a stain to speak for it. The sauce is decidedly mild, a plus in my book, as the sauce is not what I consider to be the centerpiece of the pizza. The cheese, likewise, is good, fresh mozzerella which serves as an excellent binder to tie everything together. What makes their pizza, however, are the toppings. The house special is topped with fresh sausage, pepperoni, bacon, green peppers, mushrooms and onions, all in extreme quantities. When you get this pizza you can see the care that goes into it, as all the toppings are perfectly distributed radially across all the slices. Each piece in its own is a work of art. Last time I went here, my friend and I ordered one of these; when the waitress brought it out, she put it down, stepped back and said "wow, you guys have a great pizza here." That pretty much sums it up better than I ever could. Their other Greek selections are quite good as well, though the quality of the pizza makes limits my motivation to expand my horizons very much. I've had their eponymous souvlaki, and it is indeed name-worthy. The Greek salads, dolmas, spanakopita, baklava, and everything else that you would expect in a Greek restaurant are definitely up to par. Everything is made fresh in the open kitchen, right before your eyes. The owner is the nicest guy in the world, does a lot of the cooking and prep work himself, and is always standing there with a smile when you go to check out. I absolutely can't imagine how anyone could eat here and think the food was good. I've been here a number of times with friends and NEVER enjoyed my food! I'm a broke college kid and my standards honestly aren't that high, but this place is seriously awful. I try to get something different each time in the hopes that I'll eventually land on something good, but no luck so far. The Souvlaki is TERRIBLE!! The meat was bland, chewy, and practically inedible. I didn't even bother taking my leftovers home, which is seriously unusual for me.To top it off, I felt sick for hours after eating it. The various pasta dishes I've had are all pretty below average. It's food that will stop you from being hungry, but that's pretty much all I can say for it. Found some sort of black substance floating in my drink and there was actually a fly catcher full of dead flies next to the salt and pepper which was gross. It's like going to an overpriced version of The Olive Garden. The food isn't bad, but as others have noted, it's pretty unremarkable. I had the Chicken Souvlaki platter which was OK. They do bring you a giant amount of salad with lots of feta beforehand and breadsticks which almost certainly came straight from the freezer, but still 12 bucks seemed a little steep for what I was getting. My friend had an eggplant sandwich that I tried which was not bad, but it was basically a piece of deep fried eggplant with mozzarella and marinara on bread. I think you could sum up the food as bland and inoffensive. The customer service, however, left something to be desired: first of all, they charged a dollar for hot sauce (just Frank's red hot, nothing special) and they will only take one credit card per table. I understand that times are tight, and I don't think having a credit card minimum is unreasonable, but to restrict an entire party of 6 to one credit card per table is unnecessarily stingy. read more
