Stopped at the Soy house right off a flight to Seattle and shuttle to Bellingham. It was a long day. I started with a Vietnamese coffee, which I'd never had before. It was very stong coffee ( which I needed) brewed atop a layer of sweetened condensed milk. I asked for it to be made less sweet. You stir it up and you're good to go. That said, it still got pretty sweet towards the bottom of the cup. For food I had the Soy House Rice Platter with chicken. It was basically steamed rice with grilled chicken, steamed shrimp skewers, and an over easy egg with a nice fresh salad on the side. I had it with peanut sauce. It was very good! There was plenty of food, I had it for dinner, some for breakfast with eggs the next morning, and finished the rest up for a late night snack. read more

3 stars only because we've ordered takeout from Soy House on and off since Covid and never had any issues until now. I ordered tofu pho and my husband ordered a banh mi. We live about 20 minutes away, and when we got home, my pho only had noodles and tofu. It was missing the bean sprouts, lime, and green chili listed on the menu. The bread on the banh mi was burnt and so hard my husband had to remove it. Where was the kitchen quality control? I worked in the service industry for years and I don't enjoy leaving negative feedback, but I did want to let them know. I called and spoke with a manager who said I would need to bring the food back in person for any sort of refund. Since we don't live in Bellingham, that wasn't realistic. I offered to send photos and was told they didn't have a way to receive them (sure, sure). Unfortunately, nothing was offered to make it right which was frustrating considering our total was $60 and more than half of my husband's sandwich ended up on the trash. This used to be a great go-to restaurant. I hadn't been here in years, so I was actually looking forward to coming back. Well... wow. I don't know what happened in the intervening years, but the decline in food quality is astonishing. I ordered the "House Fried Rice with Seafood," described as containing shrimp, squid, and scallops. Let's start with the rice. I was genuinely surprised they didn't use something like jasmine rice. Instead, the grains were so tiny that eating the dish with chopsticks became an exercise in frustration. The stuff reminded me more of couscous than fried rice. I've eaten rice all over the world, and this was a first. Then we get to the vegetables. Corn. Lima beans. Peas. Carrots. Green beans. Yes, apparently someone opened what looked and tasted like a bag of bargain-basement frozen mixed vegetables and dumped it into a seafood fried rice. In the middle of summer. In the Pacific Northwest. Seriously? We live in one of the most agriculturally productive regions in the country, surrounded by fresh seasonal produce, and a restaurant is serving seafood fried rice with what appears to be the same frozen vegetable medley I'd keep in the freezer for an emergency? That isn't "rustic." It isn't "traditional." It looks like cost-cutting with a wok. But the frozen lima beans turned out to be the least of my problems. The shrimp seemed fine. The scallops were... technically present, I suppose. I had to hunt through the rice to find them, and when I finally located one, it was so tiny I literally had to taste it carefully to confirm that it was actually a scallop. I have seen pencil erasers with more commanding physical presence. Then there was the squid. The first piece I ate was extremely rubbery and had a strong, unpleasant fishy flavor. Not "seafood flavor." Not "briny." Fishy. The kind of flavor that makes you stop chewing and reconsider the decisions that brought you to that exact moment in life. I ate that first piece, but I immediately began pulling the remaining squid out of the rice and setting it aside because something clearly seemed off. And here is the important part: I told three different people at the restaurant that the squid was off. Three. Different. People. This was before I became sick. This was not some theory I invented five hours later while kneeling in front of a toilet and searching for someone to blame. I identified the problem while I was eating the meal, stopped eating the squid, physically separated it from the rest of the food, and told three separate people at the restaurant that something was wrong with it. Approximately five hours later, things became considerably more exciting. I became violently ill with symptoms consistent with food poisoning. I had eaten absolutely nothing else that day before this meal and nothing afterward. I vomited repeatedly for approximately 30 to 45 minutes. When that finally stopped, I briefly thought the worst was over. My digestive system apparently had other plans. The other end then took over operations for approximately another hour, until there was essentially nothing left in my alimentary canal and I was fairly certain my body was considering ejecting organs simply to maintain momentum. To be completely fair and precise, I cannot laboratory-prove exactly what caused the illness. I did not save a squid sample and commission a forensic investigation. What I can say is this: I ate nothing else that day. The squid tasted so wrong that I stopped eating it. I pulled it out of the dish. I told three different people at the restaurant that it was off with the best response of the three, "Sorry ". And approximately five hours later, I became violently ill with both vomiting and severe diarrhea. People can draw their own conclusions. What makes this particularly disappointing is that I remember when this restaurant was genuinely good. I walked in expecting to revisit an old favorite. Instead, I got couscous-sized rice, what appeared to be freezer-aisle mixed vegetables, scallops requiring a search party, squid I warned three different employees about, and a five-hour delayed gastrointestinal evacuation impressive enough to qualify as a complete system purge. In fact if this type of hurling was a sport, I would be the Olympic record holder. A restaurant can have an off night. A dish can be disappointing. Mistakes happen. But when a customer tells three different people that seafood tastes off, and that customer becomes violently ill approximately five hours later, I think we have moved beyond "the chef had a bad night." I was in the Ham a few weeks ago to hang out with my mom and daughter for the day, and we dropped in at Soy House for lunch. The menu was huge and a bit overwhelming for lunch, but soon enough we'd each chosen something delicious to try. Mom got the chow mein and loved it. The serving was huge, and there was enough left over for her to take the rest home for dinner. My daughter grabbed the garlic sauce noodle stir fry with a combo of meat and seafood, plus tons of yummy fresh veggies. And I got the woven vermicelli, which was similar to a classic vermicelli salad, except the noodles were in more of a cake form. It was all delicious! The service was fast and friendly, and we appreciated that they have their own huge parking lot so we didn't have to find street parking on a busy day downtown. I've tried a few items on the menu, and if I do return, it would probably be for the brisket pho, even though $17 feels a bit steep for a bowl of pho. My vietnamese self can't justify that price for pho. I also ordered the shaken beef (bo luc lac) but was left disappointed. The portion seemed heavy on veggies and rice, but light on beef, which isn't ideal for a $27 dish. Bo luc lac is one of my favorite Vietnamese dishes, and I often order it, but I was surprised to see green peppers in this version. Personally, I think it would be better with fewer green peppers, more green beans, and most importantly, more beef. The flavors are there, but the balance of ingredients and pricing could use some work. read more

I've been here a few times and the pho was pretty good, but this past time it was probably the worst bowl of pho i've had. The broth was great, but I got well done brisket and got chunks of the chewiest, gnarliest brisket i've had in pho or, to be honest, in general. It was about half an inch thick and impenetrable with my teeth. I tried to wait a minute and let it cook in the broth, but it never got better. I ended up eating the rice noodles and just wanted a discount for the meat. My server was so sweet and took it to the back where her higher ups denied any comp or discount. We stopped a year or so ago after receiving two consecutive orders of vermicelli noodles with few accoutrements (bean sprouts and peanuts only, when have also had lettuce, cucumber & pickled carrots) and not enough sauce on the side to wet the noodles. I came on a solo trip to Bellingham and wanted to do as much as possible around my hotel since I did not have a car. I found this place searching for Pho on Yelp and started my walk. I stopped by the water first which is not very far and then continued on to Soy House where the outside is so welcoming and colorful, you are a fool to not stop by! I decided to eat on the patio because it was only 80 degrees - coming from 100 degree Spokane, I was like this is heaven. I didn't catch our waitress' name but she was welcoming and funny! It just added to the experience. I like the atmosphere. The large meat pizza at $30.00 I would have expected to feed more people. It claimed to be the meat lovers pizza but had it not been for a few traces of meat on it, I would have guessed they gave me the vegetarian pizza instead.
