As I was placing my order, I inquired about the squid salad. I wasn't familiar with it. I knew I was gonna order either that or my usual favorite seaweed salad. She mentioned they were very different. Recommended that I go with the seaweed salad. She didn't tell me she was gonna bring out a small sample of the squid salad for me to try. I'd be OK going with the squid salad as well but it is very different. It's an earthier taste. Each of the staff encounters is always pleasant. Nice location in Chanhassen next to lots of other restaurants. The decor is simple but nice and very clean. The sushi selection was a bit minimal, but we found some rolls that sounded good. We got our sushi to-go so I can't comment on a dine-in experience but the 3 rolls we got to-go were ready quickly, packaged nice and tight and were delicious. We tried the Chanhassen roll, hot mama, and crazy salmon roll. They were all great but hot mama was the best- spicy salmon, yellowtail, tuna, crunchy flakes and eel sauce. The Chanhassen roll was great too with baked scallop on top but it fell apart a little easily. I'd still get it again though. I haven't been to this place for years because a sushi place across the street is consistently better. However, I gave Soya another shot and I'm glad I did. My side scallops order was nicely cooked and very flavorful. The Tuna Poke was quite small for $18 but the tuna was yummy, the mango chunks and avocado added a nice sweetness, and the raw asparagus surprised me as it was crisp and tender. I've been holding back on writing a review about Soya because it literally is a hidden gem. Was I gatekeeping? Absolutely. You probably would, too. I love this place. It's a cute, small restaurant that, I believe, is family-owned. They are very inviting from the moment you walk in. One of my favorite things about this place is the quality of the fish. Not too busy during the week for lunch. This is located on W 79th street. There isn't too many spots for parking so if it is busy, the pickup option might be a great route as there are pickup only spots for quick parking. Online orders normally take 15-30 minutes. Everytime I have went to pick up my order, it has been ready and waiting. Great layout inside, lots of seating, and professional staff. Pickup orders are packed neatly and in an easy to carry bag. They have a lunch special during the week for any 2 rolls for $10 and any 3 rolls for $13. Great value as you get a side salad or miso soup included! They also have a large variety of menu items to choose from and everything seems reasonably priced. I am a fan of their lunch specials as it is very easy to order online and pickup. Came here to eat a variety of Japanese food for really picky people. My in-laws love fish but hate sushi, my wife hates fish period, while my daughters and I love sushi ... got it? So wife, older daughter and in-laws all got hibachi steak of different varieties and loved it. We warned her to order two rolls because she is a sushi and rice freak, able to wolf down copious amounts of both that would put a pro wrestler to shame ... so she wolfed it down and was still hungry. We were in a hurry and did not have time to wait for another... but she says five stars for the one. I got the Trio Color Sushi. Huge. Very good. Great assortment of fish, high quality and nicely portioned slabs of fish. The wasabi was not overpowering, but it could have been stronger. I used all of it at once and did not have that momentary scalp peeling back sensation the strong stuff has. I was completely full with three pieces left but forced myself to eat them. I should have given my daughter the three pieces, but was not irritated she did not order two rolls like I told her. As for the decor, there was plenty of open seating. We sat in the back booth. Waitress was attentive but not overly so. They do have some interesting sushi options that makes me want to come back, like the peanut avocado roll or the Trio Spicy. They also have a happy hour, but I went for the combo platter. The HH prices are good if you get multiple rolls. So ... great Japanese food for everyone, decent portions, fair price, great service, local and nice decor. A definite return visit is in order. Decided to try this place out rather then going to Kais or Jungle Kitchen. It's ticked away in a strip mall behind Chik-Fil-A. Was promptly greeted and seated with a fair number of patrons at 7:30pm on a Friday. Waiter promptly took our drink order, Ramune, Thai Iced Tea, and plain iced tea. Ordered Gyoza as an appetizer and they we good, daughter was hungry so she ate 4 of the 6 in the order. Entrees were Chicken Fried Rice (daughter's favorite dish, she is somewhat of a conisour), Basil Chicken Fried Rice, and a Hibachi Chicken Dinner. The rice entrees came out first, mine was about 5 minutes behind (not horrible but most places will bring all at once). The food was proper temp and all were nicely flavored (didn't need to add salt or soy sauce). Overall food was on par with Jungle Kitchen, Kais is a bit better. We finished off the meal with Tempura Cheesecake which was very tasty. So why 3 instead of 4 stars? Some service items. We had asked for a fork for my daughter, never got it so it's good she is decent with chop sticks. Finished my Thai Iced tea and wasn't asked if I wanted another or something else. Check was brought before we received our desert which we asked for rather then being asked if we wanted anything for desert. As a Resturant I would think they would want to try and offer you desert or after dinner drinks. So will I be back? Yeah I'll probably come back but nothing to go out of your way for. Here are our overall experience by comparison to Kai's Environment: Overall floor plan is roomier (more spacing between tables) and larger than Kai's. The theme is contemporary with dim lighting. Both locations had a sit in sushi bar. Soya is a straight line versus U shape counter. One key difference - Soya has bar (liquor). I am not a drinker so I am indifferent. Menu: Price and selection is about the same but Soya offer Thai food option. (Maybe to compete Nai Thai cafe? Definitely not a replacement since Thai menu items are limited) Service: Both locations has excellent service and very attentive and friendly. Kids friendly as well. Both are situation awareness on food allergy Food Quality Sushi quality on both location are very fresh with great presentation. Soya's chanhassen roll is definitely one of their house favorite. It is distinctly different than Kai's sushi Chanhassen Roll. However, Kai's crab meat roll is made with real crab meat, which I think it is their signature dish. One key difference - Soya sushi quantity is smaller than Kai. Overall Soya offers a decent options for foodies in Chanhassen. I highly recommend them as they are offering 15% discount for grand opening. I will still be a regular diner for Kai's because of their sushi quality and quantity. I was completely blown away by their service, presentation and overall quality of food. I loved it. Everything here is so colorful! And the the sushi has HUGE pieces of fish that are so fresh. Great food, great price. They also have Hibachi and a Thai menu and it is all so reasonable. By the way my "North Shore Roll" had 5 types of caviar, FIVE!!! Definitely check this place out, I already want to go back and you will too! There were also a ton of people doing takeout while we were there so that is also an option. The other night my wife and I decided to give Soya another chance. We ordered Pad Thai, steak and shrimp and three different rolls. This was $90 worth of food and we were expecting a good meal. A good meal is not what we received. The three rolls although totally different with different types of fish and seasoning all tasted the same. This was because the quality of fish was not good and the fish was not fresh. This fish was mealy as if the proteins had started to break down. The Pad Thai was forgettable and the steak which we specifically ordered medium rare was cooked medium well. To add insult to injury when my wife went to pick it up she had forgot her coupon and they would not give her the discount. I tried to email it to her but the data was slow and they would not give the discount without a picture of the coupon. She waited for her phone to produce the coupon and it did not, she did not want to let the food grow cold and they did not give the discount so she paid for the food and left. Having worked in Los Angeles for five years with all their spectacular Asian restaurants it has always been a little disappointing trying to replicate the experience in the Twin Cities, let alone Chanhassen. Menu is diverse, food prep is visually beautiful and tastes as good as it looks. Service is with a smile. Atmosphere could be wonderful (tastefully decorated), though marred slightly by the multiple TVs showing sporting event and American Pop music playing. Had lunch at Soya on a Saturday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised! It is located in a strip mall, but don't be fooled by the location. The inside is nicely renovated with a modern feel. It is quite dark, feels perfect for a dinner setting. The menu was expansive with sushi, hibachi, and both noodles and rice dishes. The sushi menu itself was also large- all different types of specialty rolls as well as more simple classic rolls. I ordered a shrimp tempura roll which had both eel sauce and spicy mayo on top. The tempura was crispy and he roll was beautifully plated. It happened to be happy hour while we were there. Between my mom and I we ordered 2 teas, 2 rolls, and a miso soup all for under $20. Me and the boyfriend were out and decided to stop in and check out this sushi place-- what a great find! It was pretty empty and quiet, but we didn't mind. We were greeted and seated right away. The server was very prompt at getting us menus and to our surprise, we made it on time for happy hour. It's not very often that happy hours happen on a Saturday. After the server took our drink order ($3 per bottle of corona and Heineken), we were left to look over their decently sized menus. They had the regular menu and a happy hour one. We decided to order off the happy hour menu because they had a good variety from there. Our food came out quickly and tasted really good (and trust me, I've had my share of bad sushi). Overall, great tasting good. Great prices. Great look and feel of the restaurant-- even the music they played was great. Will definitely go back and highly recommend for all who like sushi and/or Asian cuisine.
