My friend got her hair done here and had the worst experience! The stylist Judy didn't listen to what she wanted and kept telling my friend that what she wanted she wouldn't like, even tho that's highly inappropriate, if someone wants a certain hair color you do it! Unless you think it will damage the integrity of the hair you have no right to judge what color someone else wants! The stylist just did what she wanted and made my friend feel bad about how much "work" the stylist apparently had to do. If you didn't want to do it, you should've denied the service. Don't make people feel bad about what THEY ARE PAYING YOU TO DO!!!!! We will never be coming back here. Very very disappointed by the service and the attitude of the stylist. read more

Have been to this establishment twice with a mani/pedi Groupon and a massage gift card. Gretchen did my mani/pedi and was an absolute pleasure. This is about the only thing the "spa" has going for it. Gretchen was super nice and accommodating. She even fixed my nail when it smudged and had another client waiting to start. If you're looking for a great mani/pedi that's decently priced in the B'ville area, you must ask for her. That being said, everything else is nothing to recommend. Upon entering for my massage appointment I went to check in. The woman at the desk was very short with me and told me to go sit and wait. When I was sitting she came over and literally threw a clipboard at me asking me to fill out the health form for the masseuse. The masseuse brought me back to the massage room which is set up as a couples massage room with two tables. The room is not large enough for two tables and the masseuse was running into everything the duration of the massage. You could hardly get around the tables. I love a great massage and probably have 2-3 a year for the past 15 years. I have NEVER had some of the massage techniques (if you call it that) that I received during this 60min Swedish massage. It was as though I was receiving a terrible chiropractic treatment. The masseuse wasn't gentle either, slapping the lotion all over. It was uncomfortable and not relaxing. The icing on the cake was when I went to pay, I needed change to leave a tip and the masseuse was the person at the desk. I then felt obligated to give a good tip. I think that's extremely tacky and unprofessional. I also found it odd that there were no customers at all from the time I entered to the time I left and it was an early Saturday afternoon. read more

I don't like to give a low rating to a local business...however. I found nothing spa like about my visit here. I was heading out of town and needed a spa service quick. I called to find out availability and cost for what I wanted done, (leg waxing) and was told a price range and given an appointment. The waxing room was less than comfortable and honestly not very clean and tidy. The young woman who did the service acted like it was her first time when she finished I was left with bits of wax that made my clothing stick to my legs. When I went to pay for it...it was more than what I had been quoted....I of course felt a bit duped but said nothing. Not sure if this is standard operating procedure for this place but I will not be returning to find out. read more

After years of horrible haircuts and coloring, I finally got enough nerve to start seeing a stylist again. My last stylist went as far as burning off some scalp and hair trying to achieve her desired color results. No more! This time I would do some research. I happened to meet the owner at a function one day, and she handed one of her employees cards to me- Matt. Told me that he would be the best for me and to give it a try. I sat on that card for a few more months until I got the nerve to see him. That was earlier this year and I have going back ever since. His knowledge, coupled with great personality, is what keeps me coming back. He uses Goldwell color to achieve anything that the clients wants. After having not been to this day spa in over a decade but living close by, I decided to try it again with my daughter on a Saturday afternoon for pedicures. First issue: parking. Apparently there is some sort of issue (Neighbors? Another tenant in this building?) because one whole section is roped off with private parking signs. This greatly reduces the amount of parking for customers. Second issue: establishment cleanliness. This is a HUGE issue for me. Why does it seem like every salon/day spa feels the need to have all kinds of fake plants and knickknacks all over the place? All they do is collect dust and no one ever cleans them. I didn't go in the bathroom - I fear as to what might be going on in there. Third issue: cleanliness of stations. Another HUGE issue. Perhaps I'm not meant to get pedicures done out of my home? Am I too picky on the cleanliness? I like to think not! I really think I need to find out directly from the NYS Department of Health exactly what the rules are for all the utensils they use for manicures and pedicures. Basically everything she used on our feet had already been used and were just laying there - on the very dirty little pedicure equipment stand. The nail clippers, the nail files, the wood sticks, the steel Microplane - which I thought was outlawed in NYS years ago? Like I said, I really need to verify what is suppose to come from the autoclave, what can come from the barbicide, and what is suppose to be brand new for every person. Fourth issue: employees. The woman was way to into telling us her life story and all sorts of weird things. I realize this is a salon, and gossip is king in a salon, but this was over the top. I'm just looking for a very different experience - light chat, exceptional cleanliness, employees that look and act professional. This place had none of those things. read more

I have been to this Salon/Spa several times in the past decade. I have always been treated like a queen, with friendly employees and a wonderful, personable owner who also gives the BEST haircuts. I can wait 2-3 months between haircuts because her cutting technique allows the grow out to remain easy to style and still look good, even as its growing out a bit. The Roman style of decor, with gorgeous pillars and art, is relaxing and pleasant. I highly recommend this spa and it's owner/staff. It's an amazing experience you won't regret. read more

Spa on the River is not a spa. It's a salon with massage and facials. I found a deal on living social, so my husband and I booked massages, facials, and nail treatments. When we first arrived, no one was in the main room to greet us. We waited five minutes for someone to come out. After someone did finally come, we confirmed our services and were offered beverages. The staff was very friendly (which is why I gave it two stars). My husband and I went to separate rooms for facials. He was happy with his (his first); I was not happy with mine (not my first). After, we went to the nail area, me for a pedi and him for a mani. That service was satisfactory, although they don't have a great selection of polishes. After that, we had to wait almost half an hour for our massage. There is really no place to wait if you are wearing a robe. We were on two dining room chairs in the middle of the nail area. Not comfortable physically or relaxing mentally. We were finally offered some cheese, crackers, and chocolate truffles, along with glasses of Chardonnay. We don't drink, and I'm not sure who does drink wine at noon, but it was a spa-like attempt. We were invited to enjoy the snack in the couples massage room, which was a much more comfortable place to wait. The massage was adequate, relaxing though not therapeutic. Overall, I would not recommend this place. As I said, it's not a spa. There are many better places in the Syracuse area to get spa treatments in a spa atmosphere (CNY Healing Arts!). Here, you pay the price for spa treatments in a salon. Big difference in my book! read more

The staff has a family style relationship and it was nice to be treated like family as well. She was gentle and thorough. I've been going to the Spa on the River for almost a year now and the service always meets my expectations. I started off by going to Judy to get my acrylic nails done. They've always come out looking just like I asked and she is very easy to have a nice conversation with while she does my nails. I also went to the spa to get a pedicure and an updo for my wedding. The pedicure turned out great and the color lasted well over 3 weeks after getting it done. I brought in a picture for how I wanted my hair to look and Rachel did a beautiful job. She understand exactly what I wanted and was able to tweak it to meet my needs. I'm now 9 months pregnant and got a pregnancy massage recently from Kelsey. I'm someone that has never had a massage before and isn't usually comfortable with the idea of someone I don't know touching me, but it turned out to be a really relaxing experience. I let her know ahead of time about my concerns and she assured me she would stop at any time if I wasn't feeling comfortable. She helped me adjust the pillows, so I could lay on my side and asked me periodically if everything was still okay. After the massage, my back felt much better and I'm no longer skeptical about getting massages. Overall, the spa is the best I've ever been to. Took My Daughter there today to be treated like a princess.. Both of us had multiple services.. Hair cuts and styles, facials, pedi and mani, also waxing eyes lip and chin.. The staff were very professional, we were greeted with wine and cheese platter. Felt very comfortable and relaxed. The facial was the Best I have ever had, was completely impressed by this service! My daughter and I received the royal treatment and couldn't have been more pleased with each service we received. Will be definitely be going back very soon. the esthetician was very nice but the room was outdated felt dirty so did the bed and the robe....I could hear the girls doing mani pedis laughing the whole time talking very loud so I wasn't relaxing at all (and the esthetician was coughing the whole time and reeked like cigarettes) I never really like to write reviews but i felt compelled too about this one..i paid with a check and was told after I couldn't tip bc she closed it out...I was happy to write another check so I wrote her another personal check....I had two bank accounts since getting married I used the wrong account (my fault) but a week or so after the esthetician called me (I had no idea who she was saying in a tone i'm trying to cash your check and can't!? with attitude (like where was her $)....I felt so bad and was embarrassed (I wanted to tip her of course but definitely she could have gone a much different way to go about getting her tip I felt so bad she had to wait for the very generous tip I gave her of 30$ I ended VENMOING her so she got it right away and texting her number saying how sorry I was and bad I felt never got a reply....fine just very rude and awkward....I almost called the establishment but I just won't ever go back! read more

This weekend, we had a couple's massage to celebrate our anniversary. Their brochure states that this is the Couple's Massage Package- "Enjoy a warm aroma therapy foot soak, chocolates, a variety snack tray and sparkling water in our Fireplace Room." The aroma therapy foot soak was actually just sudsy water in the pedicure chairs surrounded by all of the other customers and employees. They did bring us a snack tray and beverages, which were fine. The massages were mediocre at best. My partner enjoyed his, but mine was very rough. Two days later, my arms are still sore from the massage. This whole experience left a lot to be desired. We were looking forward to a relaxing, intimate day, but it turned out to be uncomfortable and awkward due to the location of the foot soak and the lack of privacy. We will not be returning to this spa, nor would we recommend this for others who are looking for a couple's massage. read more

I hate to give this place a bad review, as the staff was very nice. However, my husband and I went in for a couple's massage on his birthday, and it was very disappointing. There were no robes, and we were in a room that was far too small for two people at once, let alone two masseuses. During the massage, despite a sign on the door letting people know a massage was in session, there was loud talking and laughing just outside of our door. After the massage, we were offered tiny paper cups of water, and there is no place to sit and lounge as you hydrate afterward. I also got a manicure, and the girl (she was very young) doing my nails was, again, very nice, but it was as if she had never used nail polish before. She got it all over my hands. This is not the place to go for a relaxing spa experience. If my husband had not paid in full before my manicure was done, I would have requested a discount. We will not be going back. read more

I purchased a Groupon for my daughter for pink and white acrylic tips at Spa on The River. The nail tech working with my daughter seemed inexperienced, the owner came over to assure my daughter that they were professionals. After the service it was evident that her nails had been poorly done. The pink looked more of a gray color. After only 6 days the tips began splitting down the middle and peeling off my daughters nails, others had water trapped under the tip. I contacted the owner, her solution was for us to drive back to the Spa on The River so she could look at them. This was not possible because my daughter attends college out of the area. I sent an email to the owner, nothing was done. Very disappointed and definitely not worth the money. read more

Absolutely the most unprofessional place and I had anything but a relaxing spa visit. I had my nails shellacked by a clueless young girl who after applying a streaky thick coat literally scraped into my nail bed to pry it off so she could try again. I should preface this by saying this " manicure " started with pushing my dry cuticles back without any soaking. I ended up getting a regular polish put on because I was running out of time to mess with the shellac again. This looked like my 5 year old did my nails which would have been a more pleasant afternoon spent. This whole thing took 1 hour and 45 minutes and I had to leave with my nails wet and awful looking complete with pieces of the unremoved shellac underneath and stringy fibers dried into the polish. While my nails had been drying the owner asked me how my nails looked and I showed them to her and said i wasnt very happy. She tried picking out a couple of the fibers and repainted a nail I had smudged while trying to bring my purse and other belongings to the dryer station with no assistance. I must also add I was the only person in the salon at the time and the people who worked there were tending to their own beauty needs like the owner dying her hair and having a face mask on and the nail tech who was filing her own nails while I was trying to rinse the shellac from my hands and nails. As I'm trying to leave I'm presented with a sample of mineral makeup while I explain I am now running late, I am forced to listen to the benefits of the makeup while I'm trying to gather my things with wet nails. Bad timing for a sales pitch. I have worked in a high end salon and now in guest relations. This place blew my mind. Lastly the owner said come in and I will personally fix your nails when you have more time,( apparently almost 2 hours wasn't enough time). I come in 2 days later, told to have a seat while they prep the nail station. I see the owner looking at shampoos and what not but not acknowledging me let alone prepping any work station. After 20 minutes I go back to the desk to see what's going on and I am informed the owner left and my appointment was with someone else who knew nothing of the situation. This place made me feel SO uncomfortable as a first time client I will never be back. P.S. after much to do the owner was called back to the salon to keep her appointment with me. Because she argued on the phone with me I said I would just like my money back. I was told no. Owner returned with her dog in tow and shellacked my nails with the worst French manicure I have ever got. read more
