At this point, the GPS was telling us we would be about five minutes late, so we decided to call ahead to let the spa know, worried we might lose our spots or be charged a fee. To our surprise and relief, the owner answered with kindness and reassurance. She told us everything would work out and that we would still have a perfect experience. Her warm, calming response completely eased our anxiety when she could have just as easily been strict or unwelcoming. We arrived exactly five minutes late, but the staff immediately accommodated our first group while the rest of us waited in the front office, chatting with the owner. As we talked about our car troubles and mentioned we were planning to buy zip ties to hold the undercover in place, she quietly made a phone call. Just ten minutes later, her husband showed up with a handful of zip ties for us. It was such a thoughtful gesture that showed how much they truly care about their guests. When it was finally my turn, I chose the Lomi Lomi massage. I was a little nervous because I wanted light pressure without it being too soft or superficial, and I also have a low tolerance for pain. My masseuse delivered exactly what I hoped for, with the perfect balance of gentle yet effective technique. At one point, I drifted into such a deep state of relaxation that my thoughts faded away into complete stillness. It felt like slipping into a meditative state of pure bliss. The beachside setting made the entire experience even more magical. The sound of the waves replaced the need for any background music, seagulls added to the atmosphere, and occasional breezes off the ocean cooled the air in the most refreshing way. Hanalei Day Spa went above and beyond, offering not just skilled massages but genuine kindness and hospitality. Let's see; where to start…read more.. First. She came recommended from our concierge so I can't say I did any background check on her. My bad...She was a kind mature woman and I am sure meant well. With that said, I have had probably a hundred massages in my lifetime and this one ranks as one of the worst and weirdest experiences I have had...here is why: She was late, couldn't carry her table from her car to the condo and asked me to do it. Let me highlight this part...I am paying $150 for a massage and obviously have something that needs worked out by a massage therapist and the therapist asks me to carry her table up a flight of stairs? ! Her sheets were stuffed in her bag and not folded...I questioned to myself if they were clean? I had to provide a pillow. She spent a lot of time asking me where I needed the massage, but completely missed the boat on hitting those areas in my shoulder and upper back. She asked if I had ever been in a car accident and when I said a very minor one about 30 years ago, she locked into that as the reason as to why my back is a mess...not that I sit at a desk all day staring at a computer...her pressure was very light and wouldn't go deeper when asked; instead I got lectured on how she only focuses on straightening the spine. Wait, am I not the one paying for this massage? She poked a lot which wasn't at all relaxing which subsequently gave me my very first ever foot cramp while getting a massage, yes I got a foot cramp getting a massage...which should have told her I wasn't relaxed at all. She said it was because she had just turned on my nervous system to my legs...really? She had too much conversation on how she teaches others in this method of massage and why she is the expert. Nothing worse than when a massage therapist or chiropractor says they "got it" when they didnt. I was a bit dissapointed when she said I would be sore afterwards as she barely put any effort into getting my sore points worked out. It is 2 days later and still have the same kinks and not sore from her massage as she said I would be. I almost hit the roof when she brought up Jesus in the conversation...no other massage therapist has ever spoken about religion while giving me a massage and why would you? My end conversation with her was asking if she had any other massages that same day as it was Fathers Day and before noon. You would think if she was great she would be booked up. The response I got was no, she had nothing else planned and that she had not been doing massages for a while. :( How do I rate my concierge for this recommendation? Last note, a good massage therapist finds the kinks and works them out. I had to point them out to her and how dissapointing to when I asked to focus on that given area, she wouldn't. This is a serious, highly trained therapist who is there to heal you, not just rub your skin and take your money. Sarah knows what she is doing and can work on complicated issues without injuring you. Afterwards I always feel lighter, straighter, more relaxed and look wonderful with a light in my eye. You may find that a day or even weeks later, that nagging pain you had wherever is gone. Highly recommended for people with long term issues. I have come back to Sarah over and over again for the past 10 years. 5 stars.
