The therapist is good but the experience not worth the 800 plus dollars we spent. We had a massage, scrub and wrap. The wrap and scrub was done on the table directly after massage. It was not comfortable at all. You're wet from the products and the bed sheets are sticking to your body. No bells and whistles here. Down and dirty experience. I cannot recommend this place. Pricing is unclear and fundamentally incorrect. They wanted to charge $740 for a couples beachfront massage. My math: $225 per person = $450 10% resort fee = $45 20% gratuity = $90 Their math: "Since it is two people you will need to calculate each thing by 2. $225 per person = $450 10% resort fee x2 = $80.91 20% gratuity x2 = $110" Standard practice would double the dollars, not the percentage, unless they actually charge 20% fee and over 20% tip for a couples massage. I recently came here to get a massage and scrub. Checked in, got situated and waited in their relaxation lounge. I like their facility here because it's upscale and nice. I had a 50 minute massage and papaya scrub add on with Julia. I asked for light to medium pressure since I wanted it to be relaxing and soothing. I didn't get much of the forearm massage, more of fingers and hand. One of the things I didn't like was the super thick heavy covering that was used. Plus she put the hot towel under my neck at the beginning and I started to feel hot under the covers. It wasn't the usual covers that massage places use. It was like a thick comforter. The music was unusual, I can't explain it but it was a bit to loud. I should have asked to lower the volume. She did a nice job on the papaya scrub. At the end while I was still under the covers, she placed my super thick heavy robe on top of me and I felt like I was pinned down from the excess weight. I'm serious. But overall, she did a nice job on my massage and treatment. Then went to shower. Liked their shower. Their locker area, restroom area was nice and clean. And all to myself. Their services includes a pool pass to the Waipouli Resort Pool. Anyway, they don't give paper receipts but they send it to your email. Later in the day I was looking at it and noticed that the gratuity/tip was over the 20 percent. And mind you, the Hawaii State tax is 4.17 percent. Should have been around ten dollars. Look how much I was charged. I'll include a screen shot of the bill. You do the math. I was severely overcharged on the tip and state tax!! I dont know what's going on here. They also charge for Resort fee. I asked about that initially when I paid my bill BEFORE I started my services. The Resort fee is for the use of the pool, which I agreed on. The spa is nice but in the height of wearing masks on the Hawaiian islands, masks were optional in this spot??!! None of the staff were wearing masks and this is at the end of Feb 2022 early March 2022 when they were required indoors. I opted to keep mine on as I'm risk-averse like that. They had a nice relaxation room and robes and they offered water and chocolate prior to the service. The massage room was nice and quiet, despite the fact this spa is just off of the parking lot. Amanda was great and gave a nice massage. The massage was about $250 with a resort fee (kind of a scam) and the tip included for a 50-minute massage. I always expect to pay more while on vacation this was a bit much but I figured I would check it out. I asked about a coffee shop or anything on-premises, they had nothing and directed me to the Starbucks across the street. All in all, it was nice but I'm not sure it was worth the money. I would consider other options before going back here. Also, directions on Google lead me way past the resort toward Hanalei. It's right across the street from Safeway in Kapa'a. read more

We got the couples massage down by the beach and it was just amazing! Listening to the sound of the waves crashing while I got a full body massage next to my partner was surreal. The package was very expensive but it was an amazing experience. While waiting for our massage, we hung out in the lounge. We were also given some chocolates and a drink. The changing room here was also so beautiful. With lockers, provided locks, large showers, and with all the hygienic products you would need to shower and get prepped for an awesome dinner. I got a Thai massage with Joseph, and it was a truly euphoric and healing experience. The spa itself has an incredibly zen ambiance, with delicious scents of cedar and eucalyptus and mellow vibes to instantly calm & center you. The entire staff, from Haylen who helped check me in to the owner Greg, I felt so cherished, important and cared for. The little gifts of chocolate, warm tea, lucious robes and much more.... TIP: Do NOT use the Yelp directions! When it opens up to maps, yelp changes the location to some weird residential address. Google map the HOTEL. When you pull in, follow the signs for the spa, there is tons of parking. Kama'aina review here: The BEST SPA! It was so hard to find actual SPAs with amenities such as .. well ANYTHING. Most of the "spas" are just massage services. After TONS of Yelp research, I found only ONE spa with nice showers -- you guess it-- THIS one. This one has: + HUGE showers with excellent shower pressure, shampoo, condition, soap, with a HUGE shower head and a detachable one. + Spacious bathrooms + Luxurious changing rooms with lockers, bathroom, lotions, combs, etc. + Relaxation room with various furniture (super clean) while you wait in robes, drink water, and eat chocolate covered macadamia nuts. + POOL access to the resort after with Jacuzzi, etc. It's also a beautiful hotel -- not dingy at all. My friend and I were actually thinking of staying at the hotel next time! + Under $200 for most services (including taxes and tip) The massage? Amazing!! I had Karen and she SUPER focused on my problem areas-- more than any other massage therapist! My friend had Joseph whom she said was so smooth, he transformed her into an ocean! LOL! read more

Not COVID safe! I wrote to try to make an appointment, and when I asked about their covid safety policies, a guy named Greg responded with this: "No mask is required once in spa or once on the table at the beach. Our therapists are not vaccinated and do not wear masks while working." When I inquired whether I could ask for an unvaccinated therapist to wear a mask while working on me, this was his further response: ""We might have to pass, it's too hard for them to work with masks on, detrimental and hazardous to their health breathing in all of the CO2." I will not be going to this spa and I'd advise others to reconsider as well. read more

I was so excited to be on vacation and have time for a massage. First of all the therapist was good so I have no complaints about the therapist skills. I thought I would try a massage by the beach since I am in Hawaii. This was a grave mistake. For the price I assumed the spa would have a spot for the massage to take place and they don't...it is just a random spot in the grass no seclusion so not very relaxing. Also, due to the wind, which as a tourist I am not familiar with it, I should have been pre-warned that it can be very windy and loud, and that the spot is not secluded from people. I would have picked to just get the massage inside, but I did not know any of this until I was outside with no clothes on with just a robe. Also, I paid for an 80 minute massage and I definitely did not get an 80 minute massage due to the terribly windy conditions the therapist spent a good portion of the time dealing with the sheet and making sure I was not exposed (since children and adults alike are around to see all). The therapist was clearly stressed by the wind and so the massage itself was not as relaxed I could feel the stress in her strokes. I think that as a customer I should be told exactly what They getting with a beach massage, because if I had been told all of that I would have picked the inside option and gotten what I wanted and not felt ripped off, due to the fact the spa is not setup or ready for outdoor massages. read more

I personally don't want to give Spa by the Sea too high of a rating, but if my wife was doing the reviewing, she'd give it a 10 out of 5. She loved it. They set us up 10 yards from the ocean on some grass and we got to hear waves the entire time during our 80 minute couples massage. (Which really was 70 minutes... jipped.) Here are my thoughts... - EXPENSIVE! $350 for two people for 70 minutes. Yikes! - They set you up in a public park so for half of our massage we had to deal with screaming kids playing soccer right next to us. At one point my masseuse even stopped and asked the kids to back away. - I felt good afterward, the service was very attentive and did a good job. - Great for the novelty of being on/near a beach, not in a giant resort. read more

This review has nothing to do with the massage therapist! - for one the spa was fantastic and beautiful! Had everything we needed after the spa which was outstanding and amazing! Although, we got a couples massage on the beach. We were not on the beach, we were 30ft from actual sand and 2ft from and walking path that everyone uses. I felt every out in the open, every not private, and extremely like I could not relax. My whole massage I felt completely tense and like everyone was watching and could see me. My husband and I were a couple feet away from each other and it didn't feel every coupley. After our massage we felt great! We go back in to pay and our $275 massage on the beach came out to $750. We were confused, paid and left. We then went on the website and looked to see if it was per person. On the website it had nothing to say if it was per person for booking. The massage & the place was 100% not worth $750. My husband & I didn't take a honeymoon because of covid and we were looking so forward to this and we left so happy yet very disappointed. For that money I could had got amazing massage back home. This place is way way WAY over priced. Very disappointed. read more

Coming in to review a 2hr session I just had with Joseph who does Thai massage. This is my 3rd or 4th visit with him and, per usual, he was excellent. Joseph exudes a sense of genuine calm and courtesy setting the tone for therapeutic relaxation. More importantly, he has the skill and technique to provide a solid service, especially for someone like me who has never-ending neck and back issues. It is worth noting that within the two years I have visited, I learned that he is makes the effort to enhance his skills by going back to Thailand for more training. I appreciate this as it gives me a sense that this therapist has a passion for his craft (I would argue that Thai massage IS a science of technique). It is reflected in his work. read more

I loved this place. The experience begins as soon as you walk in. Shoes off at the door, super-friendly staff, calming environment. Jackie did my facial, and it was the best spa service I've ever had (and I've been to some NICE spas). I went in the middle of my trip, and got the noni facial, knowing I would be experiencing sun and wind burn :) The noni facial really brought down the redness and got rid of the pain. The also loaded me up with free fruit and a flower for my hair as I was leaving. My now sister-in-law got the massage on the beach and also loved it (she's a massage therapist so she knows what's good!) The prices are a bit high, but it's Hawaii! Indulge yourself! read more

This update is NOT a review for spa services, but rather a review for the customer service/administrative aspect of the business. More specifically, this is a review in response to owner GS's actions to rectify what he felt was an unacceptable spa experience. I had previously written a not so spectacular review for the spa/customer service. I guess the owner read it...he gave me a call a couple of days after we flew out of Kauai and left a voicemail. Hmmm... Personally, I think that it takes a certain degree of self confidence, determination, and perhaps maybe even a dash of narcissim, to be a successful business owner. With this in my mind, I didn't know what he wanted when he left the voicemail, and to be honest, I didn't know if I wanted to return his call. I was expecting a phone call in which he spent the entire time "acknowledging" (sarcasm) my concerns but at the same time justifying the experience we had at his spa. Moreover, I was expecting to be convinced to delete or alter my previous review. Neither of these things happened. I did end up calling him back, I thought that I'd be bored on the eliptical at the gym, and maybe hearing someone blow smoke would help pass the time. What transpired what completely unexpected. Owner GS was genuinely humble, apologetic, and empathetic. Concerns were acknowledged (remember this word from the 2nd paragraph? this time with no quotations/sarcasm) and explanations were thoughtful/sincere. The low down is that he took over the business from the previous owner about two years ago, and has been in the process of revamping the spa, both ambiance/decor and customer service/spa experience. It seemed to me that he took my concerns to heart, and seemed genuinely passionate about the business be runs. The actions he took to rectify the situation was comepletely unexpected, and perhaps even a bit overboard...but I'm not going to complain about good customer service. For those who have the radio turned on while driving around the island, you might have heard the Foodland commercial, the really corny one about never having customers wait in line, and immediately opening up check-stands because the Foodland founder believed that good customer service would create returning customers (sorry, I digress). Well, owner GS's actions echoed Foodland's motto loud and clear...wondering if the spa and foodland has any affiliations? Ha! Anyways, I am thoroughly pleased with the way that GS handled the situation...I can't say that if I were him, I'd care that much about one customer's subjective experience. Will definitely revisit and re-yelp the next time I'm back on the island. read more

I deleted my previous scathing review of a pedicure and manicure at this spa after receiving a voice mail from both the owner and the manicurist along with a personal message from her. I appreciate both of their offers to address the issues and to either re-do or refund my pedicure. The water they give their clients is not tap water as I'd assumed. I believe the owner's message said that it's purified water. I only mentioned it because I have never been served water at room temperature. I do know it's healthier than iced water and that's probably why they serve it that way. Our tap water on Kauai is clean so it's not an issue with me. I'm not a water snob. Assuming it was tap water, I thought that it would have been nice to have some ice in the glass. No biggie. In my original review I mentioned that I was disappointed that the dry skin and small cracks in my heels weren't removed with what the owner referred to as a "cheese grater" like I'm used to having done at another nail salon. But the owner said in his voice mail that this is illegal and that's why they don't do that at his spa. I appreciate that. I mentioned the lighting in the spa which I liked in the "resting room" but my point was that if the room where the pedicures and manicures are done weren't so dark perhaps mistakes could be avoided and the end result more satisfactory. The price was not the issue so much as the end result. I know that shellac manicures are more time consuming than a regular manicure and I expect to pay more I also expect to pay for the time and products needed to remove a gel manicure. My receipt says $91.50 for both and my friends all expressed shock at the price. Having not asked what the price was ahead of time, I'm not complaining. It's just that for that amount of money one expects perfection. I'm sure if I went back that's exactly what I'd receive. read more

I went for the mermaid massage which I was excited to splurge on since I've been working very hard lately. The ambiance of the spa, locker room was quiet but also a little dark and not a lot of instruction. I was surprised they were not wearing masks and that my massage therapist was unvaccinated. For Hawaii's strict Covid rules, this seemed unprofessional. It should have been disclosed upfront. My masseuse was friendly, but the massage was not very deep. I've had many massages as I spend a lot of time working in Bali and massages are very good, and obviously not expensive. The scrub & clay was fine but then you get up rather sticky and sent to the shower to rinse it all off. I've had similar massages where you scrub first then shower then massage. It was $295 plus 20% tip. It was overpriced for what you got. They were all nice enough, but not wearing masks or disclosing their Covid procedures is just wrong. WOW! WOW! WOW! What a beautiful and luxurious spa! I had no idea it had that much space! I had a facial from Toni and felt like I had had a face-lift when I was finished. Refreshed and revitalized! She was very knowledgeable and professional in her treatment. I would definitely go back again! Also, to be able to use the pool facilities at no charge after my treatment was heaven! I'm scheduling a pedicure next! They have awesome massage chairs to receive your pedicures in! Booked massages for myself and my friend April 1st; outstanding! Deep tissue for myself and my friend's massage with Joseph, "was the best message I've ever had". They are very skilled. The facility is beautiful and bonus you get a code to enjoy the pool and Jacuzzi at the Waipouli Beach Resort which is gorgeous; we spent the entire afternoon there. For the extremely high price of the menu of services I had high expectations. when i vacation, i want to have a purpose. i personally dislike vacations, where you just go to a resort and sit out on lounge chairs by a pool or on a beach and drink umbrella cocktails. personally, i hate that. i want to travel for snowboarding, for skateboarding, to go do active stuff, to go experience local flavour in a different culture. i want to taste something new. if i want to relax in the sun by a pool; heck, i can do that at home in california. i live in california; everyday can be a resort vacation. i want a new experience. anyway, my wife... it's not that she's totally that kind of person that needs to have these lazy resort vacations or anything. she also likes to do active things. however, as a health practitioner, she insisted that we seek treatment after hiking the kalalau trail since she was quite sore and pregnant. well, by doing some local searching, she found spa by the sea and made an appointment for us on a day when it was raining, on a day when we figured we'd just do some mild things like hang out at the cool kaua'i museum and do some gift shopping. well, the spa by the sea is pretty nice. i mean, i've had a decent number of massages in my life, all because of my wife's penchant for massages. usually she books them, but i guess there were times when i was thoughtful enough to book the couples massage for us. well, she picked this one and booked this one. well, the spa by the sea is part of a pretty cool alternative (or holistic) health center. i guess the main guy in this center is a chiropractor, which is cool. there's also a guy that does like uh... chinese medicine or something and uh... maybe like cold laser therapy? i'm not too sure. anyway, we just went for the massage, you know? since it was raining, yeah, we definitely weren't planning on a massage outdoors. they have a nice room for couples massages. i don't remember the names of our massage therapists. they were two women, both very nice and professional. by the way, i refuse to use words like "masseuse" or "masseur." i figure those words refer to people that give happy endings. only sad endings for me! i use the term "massage therapist," especially since i have friends that work in the industry. both my wife and i like hard pressure for massages. i was glad this woman, who was relatively small, could do that. i suppose that's indicative of good training. it's like how a well.trained but smaller martial artist can kick and punch harder than a big, meat head oaf. the massage was great, and i'm glad it was very complete and comprehensive. (i feel like i've been to places where they cut it short. 50 minutes should be 50 minutes.) as other yelpers have pointed out; yes, you take off your shoes at the door, which makes perfect sense for asian guy me. i take off my shoes every time i enter my house, yes. heh, one thing though... i kind of wish they provided communal slippers at the bathroom, which some businesses would do like in korea if you were required to remove shoes. it's not that i pee on the floor, but i think most guys do. the toilet bowl is for reference only, you know? anyway, it's not that anyone necessarily peed on the floor here. the bathroom looked very clean. everyone was very friendly at this office. the place is very clean, well.decorated, and relaxing. since my wife paid for this treatment, i don't really remember how much it cost for the couples massage. i think it was in the $225~250 range. i'm not sure; is that cheap, expensive, or average? *shrug* read more

She was very patient while we waited the weather out to decide what to do. My sister & I moved ours inside & my mom kept hers outside. She was very assured to us that our mom was happy. Shannon was my massage therapist & she was amazing. She found my trouble spots & zoned in on them.
