We try to make it over to Spago's once a year. Its worth going across the boarder, and if you go in the summer you can usually find a street fair going on in Windsor. Its on Erie street, near the tunnel (or the tunnel is easier) along a couple of block stretch called little Italy. The Trattoria is a casual place. With traditional Italian menu, but they do a great job - fresh ingredients, lots of garlic and olive oil - what's not to love? We think the Calamari is the best. Its not bread, but grilled after being based in a Basaltic vinegar and olive oil. Extremely tender, but rubbery or chewy. The first time we came to the restaurant we order a large pizza and while waiting the waiter recommend we order an appetizer. I order the calamari, while the rest of the group stayed with the bread. The Calamari didn't last long, and we would have order another order, but the pizza arrived. Since then we have had other dishes, always good, but we always start with the Calamari. read more

I've been coming to Spago for years with my Grandparents whenever we venture to Canada to shop on Erie street. After a long day of hoopla, we indulge in the offerings of this authentic Italian eatery. The ambiance is very quaint: wooden/wicker tables and seats, red tablecloths, beat-up old murals for wallpaper. The staff is always friendly and ready to help you with whatever cuisine you decide to order. The best things on the menu are their pizzas, all of them, which are baked in a wood burning stove. The crust is thin and crispy with a bold flavor. The sauce isn't overbearing and has a great flavor to it. All their ingredients are always fresh and delicious. Seriously, one of the best pies, I've ever had. Their grilled calamari is to DIE FOR! The squid is grilled, which enables it have a smokey, almost woody, taste to it. It's as tender as can be and is then tossed in a robust balsamic vinegar marinade. Heaven! SO light and indulgent. Everything, really is amazing, the pasta with muscles are another great option. The sauce that they pair it with is PERFECT for a seafood dish, I could sop it up with a biscuit. If you venture into Canada, please make this a stop. Came across the border to try some Italian food in Windsor. We weren't disappointed with this place! While the line was longer than we would have liked on a Saturday night, we were able to while away the time with a glass of cabernet and some free appetizers. We were ravenous when we finally got seated, so we ordered the mussels in the garlic / olive oil sauce, gnocchi, and the duck confit special. The mussels were amazing - so much meat, and very well prepared! Salads were included with the meals but probably were the least exciting item of the meal. Gnocchi was tender and filling, and the duck was delicious! Portions are huge, prices are low (especially given the current exchange rate), and the staff was responsive despite the full house. Spago Trattoria E Pizzeria (abbr: STEP) is an amazing gem on Windsor's "Via Italia" on Erie Street, and I can't say enough good things about it. But, by god, I'm going to try. Walking into the bottom floor of Spago (the "STEP" portion) is like walking into a corner restaurant in Italy. It's bustling, efficient, and filled with gesturing old Italian men, little girls in white dresses, and waiters that look like they're just part of the family. I'm 1000% sure there's an old matriarch in the back, perfecting this or that pasta sauce for the guests. Not customers. It's comfortable, cozy, and the kind of place you could equally take your parents, your date, or your drunk friends. It's also very reasonably priced. Two people could eat comfortably for $30, a little bit more if wine is added. And wine should always be added. They don't have a huge selection, but quite literally everything on the menu is excellent. A rundown of a few things: Pizza: The best I've ever had. Qualifying this statement is that I'm from Seattle, so really, what do I know about pizza?, but still, far FAR better than anything I've found in the greater Detroit region. Supinos come close. The crust is thin, slightly chewy, and baked to absolute perfection, with just a little touch of burnt on the edges to give it that homemade touch. They use a light touch on the sauce and cheese, to give the crust its full due. As for toppings...I guess they do have them. But seriously, pizza should be good straight-up margharita. The more you add to it, the more likely you're going to mess it up. Pasta: Also incredible. We had their Spago pasta special, which was a penne with vodka sauce, with mushrooms and ham. So so simple, but incredibly well executed. I love the creaminess of the sauce and the de-emphasisis on the meat, so that each little chunk of ham was a surprise. Salad: We didn't order it. They gave them to us free anyway. Just gave them to us with a shrug and commands to "eat, eat." How can you not love this? Apps: I've had both the grilled and the fried calamari here. Both are fantastic, but the grilled is what I'll come back for. Just the right amount of char to balance the balsamic makes this dish fantastic. A must have. Wine: Great selection. Our bottle of Colle Secco went very well with the meal. Dessert: As I recall, not a huge selection. I'm not a dessert person, but this is the only potential knock against the restaurant. We were hoping for homemade cannollis. In short, this is the easiest 5-stars I've given to a restaurant in a long time. It fulfills every homemade Italian cooking craving you could have. If it were any more Italian, it would pinch your cheeks and box your ears. read more

One of my most memorable restaurants ever! This place is very cute, especially considering what the surrounding cities have to offer. My boyfriend at the time and I drove there from Detroit (it's a short ride, just cross the bridge/tunnel to Canada). We had a nice dinner upstairs. That was the first time I tried mussels, and fell in love, as they were prepared so nicely. Then off to the lounge. We took our wine from upstairs and they brought our desert to us from the kitchen. We first sat on the couches and tried the cakes while the rest of the people socialized and some danced. The bar there also served drinks. The ambiance was incredible. Lots of older folk but they were all so energetic and cool. We danced to the band, which was very similar to Gypsy Kings. Those guys are fantastic! This was more than two years ago and I still often think about the place. If I am ever in the area, I will go back in a heartbeat! Highly recommended! read more

The draw here isn't the décor, nor the atmosphere. The downstairs area is loud and not particularly plush but the dishes are outstanding. On a recent evening it was hopping busy but every dish that we ordered was great. Several of our party had allergies and one of us wanted to "personalize" her order. The server got everything correct and it was all tasty. A lot of places drop the ball on seafood pasta. I suspect that the seafood isn't properly cleaned, so the result ends up tasting too strong. It's often over-cooked, as well. Spago did it perfectly in taste, texture and temperature. Even the complimentary salad and bread were good. The prices are surprisingly reasonable. Some glasses of wine were $5! Pizze range from $7-$15, pasta options are $11-$19 and there are plenty of hot and cold antipasti and panini as well. read more

We love Spago Trattoria and usually have dinner there at least once a month. The quality of the food is always excellent and the staff is great. We know many of the waiters by name. We have had many family gatherings there for birthdays, anniversaries and graduations and had a great experience. The pizzas are great as well as the pasta dishes. The tiramisu is THE BEST in the city. In fact, the best I've ever had. Like my husband says, "Dollar for dollar you can't find a better restaurant than Spago." I absolutely LOVE this place! I grew up in Windsor, and whenever I come back I always go here with my family. The restaurant is located on Erie street, which is a well-known strip containing many nice Italian restaurants. The only thing I would say about this area is, it is hard to find street parking. I usually park on a side street, or I will pay to park in one of the municipal lots. I have always had absolutely wonderful service. Once I came, and the wait for a table was pretty long. While we were standing and waiting, a waiter came buy to offer us free appetizers (seafood skewer) to snack on. When you are seated, they give you fresh bread, with roasted whole garlic cloves which you can use as a spread for your bread. I have to recommend their grilled Calimari!! I cannot describe how delicious this is. It is drizzled with balsamic vinegar and it is so soft it melts in your mouth. Can't wait to go back the next time I'm in town :) read more

Met some friends for dinner here the other night. They offer a wide variety here so I spent a bit of time perusing the menu. The waiter took our drink order promptly and was quite attentive so my time spent on the menu forced him to come back several time. Since they make fresh pasta I decided to try the pasta and chose a dish I am unfamiliar with, the Fettuccini alla Mantricianna. My friends who are regulars ordered the Scaloppini all Parmagiana and the Pollo alla Parmagiana. We all ordered Caesar Salad. The complimentary Bruscetta started the meal. It was served as a small pizza and not bad but I prefer the toasted bread version of this dish. The Caesar is really on point with a well balanced dressing that was tart, salty and creamy. Perfect!. Our mains appeared promptly. The Fettucini was perfectly cooked with a wonderful texture. I should have been less experimental as I'm not a fan of the alla Mantricianna. The bacon was not crispy even though it was thinly sliced and diced . I can't say it was a bad dish. Iit just didn't work for me. My friends really enjoyed their meals. Cocktail and wine prices are reasonable and they make a great Negroni. I will be back to try Spago again. read more

Went to the new Spagos location at Caesars Windsor tonight. Have been waiting forever for it to open since it was announced earlier this year. It was worth the wait. They did a fantastic job with the renovation. The new renovations look great. The food was great. Most of my favorites from the other locations are on the menu and a few new others. Prices were good and inline with the other location. This location and the Cabana location will definitely be in my regular rotation for our Wednesday night dinners I have with friends. read more

This was the best Italian meal I have had since we were in Italy. The service (Christian) was excellent. At one point my son dropped a knife on the floor and the replacement was there in less than a minute without asking. The food was flavorful and generous with the portions. Great food, and excellent service! My parents and I visited Spago while staying in Windsor on our way to Michigan. Our server was very friendly and extremely helpful, making us feel very welcome. I ordered a Pesto Chicken pizza, my dad ordered the seafood risotto special, and my mom ordered a vegetarian penne pasta. The portions were quite large, and none of us could finish our orders, but the food tasted excellent. My dad had a few issues with his initial plate, and the staff were gracious and promptly brought a replacement plate of risotto with the original issues resolved. The parking is less than to be desired and it's a one way street so you have one shot to find a spot if you go down the side street. The outside the door area was pretty dirty with cigarette buts and the lights weren't on when we arrived but it was just an oversight. The only thing I would like is to be able to make reservations! Nothing special here. We were a table of 5 for dinner at 7pm. Had to wait 30 minutes for a table. Place was full. That is usually a good sign. Tables are bare, no table cloth. Hard wooden chairs. I felt crowded. No atmosphere to speak of. Was offered cheese pizza while we waited. We were seated. Brushetta was waiting for us. It was good. Tomatoes were diced far too large. Just the right amount of garlic and basil. Server was long time employee, rattled off the specials and took our order. All orders come with a house salad of mixed greens and house made dressing. Salad was ok but not another thing on the plate. No tomato or onion or even a crouton. Disappointing. I had the veal scaloppine. Not good. Dark color to the meat tells me this is not veal at all. Meat was dry and tough. Was offered side of vegetables or pasta. When I asked about a starch (roast potatoes like most places would serve with a veal) he snapped "pasta or veg". Pasta it was. The other orders were 2 pasta specials with sausage, 1 chicken caesar and one lasagna. Pasta's were OK, Chicken caesar was good. The catch is this, they call this restaurant a Trattoria that is less formal than a Ristorante. That is is for sure, But the prices are kinda formal prices. Honestly I wont return. Sometimes you feel like getting away, but you don't have much time or money or energy. Windsor is really convenient, and along Erie Street there are so many options for Italian food. My grandfather and I drove into town one Sunday last November and had the most wonderful time at Spago. It was packed, but they found us a great table, showed us great service, and the food was excellent. I had a pasta dish and he had veal parmigiana. So to start with, this place is located in one of the cutest and most authentic neighborhoods in the Windsor-Detroit area. (Windsor's Little Italy is one of the area's best kept secrets!) We actually crossed the border this weekend just eat here. More importantly, the food here is amazing, the prices are extremely reasonable and the service is fantastic. Everytime I've been here I've had the Lasagna Di Casa. The sauce is spectacular! My husband and I also tried the Gamberi All'Arrabiata which was spicey and just as fabulous. Most of the glasses of wine are also under $7 which is unheard of at most Itialian places in Metro Detroit. They serve roasted garlic with their fresh bread and the house salad is very mild and refreshing. The service was unprofessional and my friend and I felt ignored as the waiter decided to chitchat with friends. All I wanted to ask for was salt and pepper and it took forever to get his attention.
