The to-go operation at MOOTZ needs major improvement, especially on weekends. The entire process feels disorganized, discombobulated, extremely slow, and at times sloppy. This really seems to be a management and operational issue rather than an employee issue. The employees appear to be working as hard as they can, but they clearly don't have the proper systems, procedures, or workflow in place to handle the volume efficiently. There seems to be a lack of organization, clear responsibilities, and an effective process for getting to-go orders out accurately and on time. Anyone with strong restaurant operations or management experience could look at this setup and immediately identify ways to make it faster, cleaner, and far more efficient. I finally made it to Mootz after walking past it so many times, and I'm so glad I did! My friends and I came on a busy night, so there was about a 45-minute wait, but it was worth it. Overall, I'd rate Mootz around a 3.5, but giving a 4 mainly because of the excellent service and the burrata, which was definitely the standout dish. Would come back, especially for that. The vibe was lovely and fun on a Saturday night. We started with the burrata, which was excellent. It wasn't just a basic arugula and burrata situation, it was well seasoned with a really nice olive oil, lemon, and balsamic combination that made it feel elevated. It also came with baguette slices, but those are made with their pizza dough (which contains eggs). Once we mentioned my egg intolerance, our server was incredibly kind and checked with the kitchen, and they were able to make alternative slices using their gluten-free dough. Really appreciated that extra effort. The Grandma's Pizza (we did it on the gluten-free crust because of the egg) was pretty good. The crust itself was solid, especially for gluten-free. The toppings leaned heavier on the cheese than the sauce, and I didn't love the cheese as much, but it was still an enjoyable dish overall. This is some of the best pizza I've had and should be considered the pizza to beat in Detroit. Stopped in for lunch with a couple of friends in the late lunch hour so not many people were there. We were seated right away and our server, Katie, was fantastic. Great service. Not too hovery. No complaints. They got a large bee sting (looked very good and they said it was great) and I got a small beast of burden. It was fantastic. Little flop, dough had nice flavor, and good portion on the toppings. I was a little concerned it would be small, but it was a good portion size for one. I'm not usually a ricotta fan, but it perfectly complimented the salty meats and parm. We ended up waiting quite a while to be seated, and several other guests were waiting as well. We ordered the garlic knots, which were very greasy--just as other reviewers have mentioned. For our main dish, we got a large buffalo chicken pizza. The flavor was good, but it was a bit too spicy for my taste. That said, the wait staff was friendly, attentive, and genuinely kind, even with the delays. The food took longer than expected to come out, but the service itself was warm and appreciated. One thing to note: gratuity is automatically added for parties of four or more, so keep that in mind when the bill arrives. Team dinner this evening with colleagues, we were at Mootz for over an hour before walking over to the ballgame. Mootz is easy to get to, a short walk from the Cadillac Square People Mover Station or the QLine. There is street parking in front or paid parking decks nearby. We overfilled a booth and were warmly taken care of by multiple members of staff. Once again, I dropped off my keto diet for this goodness as we started with their massive garlic knots (the size of French croissants) before the multiple pizzas arrived. We had one with just pepperoni and that was good. My favorite was the "Bee Sting" which was topped with sausage, banana peppers, jalapenos and drizzled hot honey. Delicious, a little sticky and quite spicy. Fabulous and even better with some red pepper flakes added. Note that this is not "Detroit style" and is tilted towards what they call New York style pizza with round pie and a thinner crust. Tasty stuff and made to order. The Cajun Salmon Fettuccini was amazing, Salmon was well seasoned and flavorful with the right amount of spicy, Fettuccini noodles was cooked to perfection it was spicy but not overwhelming and the bell peppers gives it great flavor. My experience up until the very end of our visit wouldn't have warranted a review from me. Everything was fine- service was prompt and waitress was sweet and attentive, food was good if not unremarkable. However, I had asked if it was possible to substitute something in a dish and was told "yeah, sure". Apparently, somewhere on the menu I didn't notice, there is a "no substitution" disclaimer. Had I seen this or was told this by my server, I had another dish I was equally interested in that I would have happily ordered instead. When I received the bill, there was an $8.99 charge for my "substitution ". Now, I absolutely take accountability for not thoroughly reading the menu. Lesson learned bc in my whole life, as a customer and a server myself, have I ever encountered such an indifferent "tough luck" attitude at a restaurant regarding a simple fix. Server was trying to be sweet and apologetic about her "nothing she could do about it", even after speaking to her manager. So I asked to speak to the manager myself to plead my case. The manager did end up taking off the charge after the expected and obligatory "just this one time but in the future..." lecture. If this had been it, again, I wouldn't have bothered with writing this at all. Why I'm writing this negative review is because of the accusations of lying. Manager claims the waitress told her that she explicitly told me that there would be a charge for the substitution, which would make me a liar. I assure you, I am not. And even though the manager claims she wasn't accusing me of lying, it absolutely does not feel good having to defend my integrity. So when the server eventually took my payment and tried to apologize again for "not being able to help", I straight up told her what her manager told me. She looked confused, said she didn't tell the manager that, and then looked visibly upset. Was she upset bc I called her out or because I was unjustly accusing her of lying? If it were the latter, why did the manager throw her under the bus? A last attempt to make the substitution charge stick or did she misunderstand the server's explanation of our interaction?
