This place was a terrific find. We will go again. Only 5 miles away from Rutgers Uni. We were offered simply the freshest bread: toasty and hot with a lovely crust and soft inside. We shared a Clams Casino to start, which was very tasty. I had Paella Valenciana with mussels, half lobster, chicken, chorizo and scallops. I really enjoyed it and it seemed very authentic. We also had tilapia and a seafood ensemble (forgot the names). Anyway they were all fantastic. Portions were huge and we all got to take some home. Very attentive service. After my daughters graduation from Rutgers, we decided to try because of the great food reviews. The place wasn't anything to look at but did have a warm feel however there was a loud party going on and the music could be heard (very loudly) in the main dining room. I couldn't even hear the waiter when he was telling us the specials. The food came and the portions were huge and looked delicious! I had the duck a'la orange, my mother had the filet of sole with shrimp, my daughter had the chicken with wine sauce and her bf had the chicken with mushrooms and all were delicious! Everything came with a side of home made chips, green beans and carrots as well as a large plate of yellow rice for the table. The table next to us was very loud and obnoxious, between them and the music, the restaurant was definitely lacking in a relaxing enjoyable atmosphere however 5 stars for the food and reasonable prices. read more

One of the most disappointing dine-in experiences so far. The restaurant was at full capacity with no distancing among tables or patrons. Waiter gave us our check early during our meals. In addition the food was bland and disappointing in flavor and tenderness. We tried the paella valencia and sirloin steak and could not get through that many bites. This restaurant was definitely not operating at a reduced capacity and when you walk in, the bar is packed to the brim. Be cautious if you are hesitant about dining in. Came here on a Friday night. It was quite crowded, plus there was some kind of event going on in the hall. After waiting about fifteen minutes for a table, we were seated in the back. The decor could sure use an update, but nonetheless things were clean. We ordered the calamari appetizer and I just loved the sauce (so much we asked for more!). Then we ordered the Mariscada for two and it was a lot of food! The pot was full of seafood: lobster, mussels, scallops, clams, and shrimp... along with a plate of rice. The broth was so incredible I ended up drinking it like soup! Overall, this was a very good spot if you're in the mood for some good seafood. We had our holiday party here. The food was not good. There was paella and some chicken dish. Neither had flavor. We added hot sauce to eat a bit of it, but opted for the bread instead. The sangria was weak as well. I was extremely disappointed at the bartender on staff's behavior. I can't remember his name, but it was a Friday. It was bad enough for me to demand to speak to the manager. I believe his name is Luis. He was very understanding and listened to our concern. I will not return to this place and will be sure to let my administrators know this is not the place to go to moving forward. Dinner out with friends, nice table and not too noisy - ordered a pitcher of red sangria - VERY good and best part of the meal - ample bits of orange and apple and not too much ice. Dinner was shrimp in sauce for the husband and I had the salmon, which was undercooked after asking if it could be really, really well done. Spanish rice and the salads were a bit routine, not exceptional. The potatoes were superb, crispy slices that were much better than the rice. We had coffee, and the rest of the sangria. Great night, but thought the shrimp and salmon could have been a bit better. Would go back again - killer sangria. read more

This was supposed to be a birthday celebration to include my root culture--Spaniard cuisine. After spending a glorious weekend celebrating and partaking of exquisite culinary offerings, came back home and wanted to try a local Spaniard restaurant with apparently good reviews, as I had a taste for one of my favorite foods for the gods--Paella Valenciana. We ventured off to Spain Inn, Piscataway, based on Google reviews. The place was a tad dated but paid no mind since I was anxious to experience a good "Paella Valenciana". We ordered a pitcher of Sangria. It was bland. That alone should have been a red flag. We moved on to ordering an appetizer--calamari. They served us tepid and soggy calamari that had obviously been sitting for quite some time. Needless to say we asked for a fresh batch and what a difference with the new ones! Fried to a glorious golden brown--and delicious! We moved on to ordering dinner entrees. Hubby and I ordered "Paella Valenciana" which supposedly included clams, scallop, lobster tails, chorizos, and chicken legs. We waited and voila! The "Paella Valenciana" arrived. They literally looked frightful and pale. Where was the touch of saffron? Where was the "arroz valenciano?" Where we're the seasonings? Where was the "socarrat!" We both received pale yellow mushy rice that seriously resembled instant rice--bland, pale, and devoid of any magical or even a whimsical touch. We did not feel the Love at all. Hubby was starved so he worked his way through the seafood and charred "chorizo". I could not. I would not. This was beyond the measure of mediocrity if ever I saw it, let alone taste it. We made it very clear to the serving team that we meant no disrespect nor offense. We simply did not like either Paella. Instant rice? Really? In their defense, and even if it weren't instant rice, it appeared to be so and that alone is disappointing. Pale tasteless yellow rice. I realize there are numerous versions of Paella, each true to the region from whence it originates. If only the subject Paella were true to at least one of those versions--we might argue that the creators were true to their form and that is to be respected and honored. Not so as the version presented held to no known form and was sadly indifferent and devoid of any passion or true meaning. The birthday boy here returned the Paella. He was offered another option, and chose a lightly battered flattened chicken breast in a garlic sauce with blanched green beans and rice. When it arrived, I didn't know what to expect. I should have quit while ahead. Sadly, the chicken too was mediocre and sad--and mushy. Even more sad, and what pushed me over the edge, enough to pen my distaste and disappointment, was that the same sad mellow and pale rice used for the so called "Paella Valenciana" once again made its royal appearance with the sad mushy garlic chicken as a replacement for the sad, mushy, tired, and uneventful "Paella Valenciana" that I so desired on this my birthday. I do attempt to see all points of view, and try to be mindful of the fact that there are good as well as bad days in any profession or endeavor. Unfortunately, our experience at "Spain Inn" in Piscataway was indeed a "...series of unfortunate (and sad) events" from which we shall not recover and shall never attempt to repeat. Also, if I might add that we had our 6 year old with us that wanted the "Mac and cheese" from the Childrens menu. (I know, I know--shouldn't expect decent Mac and cheese from a Spaniard restaurant.). Sad to say, that too was an utter disappointment. We do not recommend this establishment at all. Alas, if mediocrity is the name of the game at "Spain Inn," then have at it and to each his own. We love Spain and go at least once a month. The service is wonderful. The food delicious and plentiful. The seafood selection is great. We don't eat red meat so I can't review that. But the steaks are very popular looking at other tables around me. read more

We revisited this local gem yesterday to celebrate my wife's birthday. I'm happy to say that Spain Inn is as good as ever. I would give 4.5 stars if I could. We started off with a wonderful shrimp in garlic sauce appetizer. For our entrees, I had the Mariscada which was filled with perfectly prepared 1/2 lobster, shrimp, scallops, clams & mussels. (suggestion...If you don't want too much broth, then go with the paella). My wife's veal scallopini was perfectly tenderized and tasty. I have never had a bad meal here. Usually I go for the appetizers. The fried calamari is a must have, its amazing ! I also get the clams in a hot sauce which is great. Another favorite is shrimp in garlic sauce. I have had dinner there chicken in a wine garlic sauce it was great! The chicken wasn't dry the rice was just right! If you love sangria this is the place for the BEST red sangria. Jimmy the bartender is quite the entertainer and knows how to make some drinks. Also for dessert I am not a cheesecake fan but I tried it and wow I would eat that cheesecake. And if you are a trimasu fan its a must have ! This restaurant is one of my favorites and has been for years. My wife and I live close enough to walk but by the time we eat and a couple glasses of sangria and it is actually safer to drive. We have never had a bad meal from the fried calamari, paella for two, the assorted chicken dishes to the perfectly cooked monk fish, oh and even tira misu or flan for dessert never disappointed. The service staff treat everyone like they are regular customers (family) that come there every day. Even when ordering for take out from the bar, the bar tender taking your order is friendly and never ignores you while you are waiting to pick up. This place really went downhill since the last time I was here. I ordered the 7oz Filet Minion medium-rare with Lobster tail. The lobster tail was ok but the filet was no 7oz. It was more like 4 or 5 oz and was on the dry side. Definitely not worth the $38.00 price tag. It's a shame because the people here are real nice. Unfortunately it seems they're cutting corners to try and save a buck. Penny wise, dollar dumb. I've always said, why travel to Newark Ironbound when this place is a mile from my house. I have been going to the Spain Inn for at least 25 years. Louis is a gracious host. The staff are friendly and the sangria is outrageously good! Great place for date night. Good service, great bread, now for the bad: the food was bland and the portions are half the size of the restaurants in Newark i.e. Iberia. The pricing is way too high, the food quality is way too low and portions are very small to demand such high pricing. We got mariscada en salsa verde and the house specialty camarones spain inn, which was very small and the seafood was tiny. We even had to ask for more rice because the portions were very small. We also noticed that we had to use about a third of the salt shaker on our food, very bland. It's a terrible feeling to leave a restaurant this unsatisfied because we tend to enjoy just about everywhere we go. We spent $50, I would save your money and try either Fernandes in South Amboy plus they have Rodizio, "not small" or go to Newark try Brazilia with an awesome salad bar "not small" it's really good. read more

I've been coming to this place for over 25 years. I haven't been here in about five years. Took my dad for lunch and was glad to see that they haven't missed a step. Had the garlic shrimp, awesome as usual. For my entrée I had the beef tips with shrimp in garlic sauce. Yes you can see the theme with me is garlic garlic and more garlic. My dad had the veal in lemon wine sauce. Between the sangria the potato chips and the rice the meal was off the hook, just like I remember every meal at this place I've never had a bad meal. I am very disappointed with the bartender Jimmy. He charged me for a drink for another patron that I did not offer. When alerted him to the issue he told me it was too late and I should have said something at the time. Well we went back and forth and he told me...well you can afford it!
