We also had to ask the waiter for bread, and when it finally arrived, we were each given one very small roll. Our main entrées were sautéed tilapia and shrimp in lemon sauce with mashed potatoes and string beans, and breaded veal cutlet Milanese with mushrooms in a wine and brandy sauce over mashed potatoes. Unfortunately, neither entrée stood out the way meals here usually do. The tilapia was sitting on a bed of mashed potatoes and absolutely swimming in lemon sauce. There was so much sauce that it completely soaked the mashed potatoes and vegetables. I could only eat the top portion of the fish. My husband also mentioned that his breaded veal was very oily. The waiter never returned to ask if we wanted anything else to drink. The water had no ice and felt warm. We also had to ask for additional bread. I'm used to bread being left at the table, not rationed piece by piece. The Spain Inn in Piscataway has been a local favorite for as long as I can remember, and there's a lot to say about it, mostly positive. Let's start with the area I frequent the most - the bar. Jimmy, the bartender, is a standout character, eccentric, wild, and fun. He's also an excellent bartender, despite his quirks. He's attentive, and the bar itself has a great atmosphere. Separated from the rest of the restaurant and banquet hall, there's a camaraderie among the patrons that adds to its liveliness. The drinks are good, but be mindful of your tab as it can add up quickly. The only downside is that the bar area is a bit small and can feel stuffy, with stools and a few tables along the wall. Now, let's talk about the food. I've dined at this restaurant several times in different stages of my life - as a kid, teenager, adult, and even a grumpier adult. The food here offers typical Spanish cuisine (from Spain, not Latin America - an important distinction). Strangely, I find that the food served in the bar area is often better. They have these thin, crispy potato fries that are absolutely delightful, adding texture and salt to many dishes. They're like homemade Pringles, but fresh and superior. Overall, the food has consistently been pretty good, featuring many traditional Spanish dishes. As for the banquet hall, it's a suitable option if you're planning an event. I've been in the bar area while events were happening, including weddings. While it's not extravagant or massive, it's a decent-sized venue. The separation I mentioned earlier works well for events, and there's another room available for hosting. That's a plus. I'm torn between giving this place 3 or 4 stars, but I've settled on 4. The only downsides are the occasional stuffiness and the lack of updates, although they have made some improvements over the years. The staff is friendly, and you can tell they take their jobs seriously, which adds to the overall vibe of the place. All in all, I recommend the Spain Inn, especially if you're looking for a spot to enjoy drinks and appetizers with friends. It's a Piscataway staple worth visiting. read more

What a pleasure it is to write a few words of my deep appreciation of excellence always demonstrated by the head and staff of the Spain Inn located in Piscataway N.J. The restaurant has long been a family favorite for its unique menu, particularly specializing in the finest of the culinary arts. A few years back, as a pastor, college professor and world traveler, my wife and I had the charge of preparing for the 100th Birthday Celebration of Mrs. Annie Grayer of Plainfield, More than two hundred graced the Piscataway Spain Inn dining room facility where the food was not only plentiful to everyone who attended, but was received with the warmest expression coming from the entire Spain Inn staff. A few of our family favorites include the fried red snapper, the sizzling steak, the salmon fill with crab meat and of course the garlic collard green soup. The food is always done just right, if not they will make it so.The service is excellent 99% of the time, the other 1% of the time its very ,very good.The wait staff is friendly and accommidating, the managment is professional and aims to please.The sangria (red) is incredible,among the best ,if not the best I've had in many , many years .The filet mignon ,the lobster tails , the marescata, the paella , the tilapia, you name it , its always fantastic.
