A year ago I had a first date at the sister restaurant Spain Inn 2 in Asbury NJ. It was fabulous and we have been back. On our one year anniversary we decided to to try the original. I noted some negative reviews but pressed on. First, staff is attentive and friendly and the atmosphere was fun. Delicious drinks, but the calamari was like chewing thick rubber bands. The entrees were very good, but the evening was ruined when our carrot cake came, and on the second bite found a long strand of hair. Manager adjusted the check appropriately, but I would never go back and cannot recommend Spain Inn. If you're out in western Jersey try Spain Inn 2. They did it all right!! read more

Went here for Valentine's Day didn't wait much to get seated! We were seated and had a nice waitress but you could tell she was up selling us on everything on the menu! Selling us on all the most expensive dishes so that her tip would be higher. We ordered a grilled octopus for starters and order a pitcher of Sangria for drinks. (Not to bad rite!) Next for the main dishes we order steak medium rare and a paella. We waited about 30 mins in between for our food! When it came out our food was cold and the meat tasted as it was sitting for some time. When we got desert my wife had ordered a coffee cocktail that the waitress recommended. She never told us that we were going to get charged double because it had double shots. Again upselling us on everything! When I got the check the dessert drink was $26! Yup you read right! So I immediately asked for a manager and asked for refund. Just for the drink! I should have asked a refund for the entire meal! It used to be a nice place back in the 90's but if you want better food quality go somewhere else! Not here! read more

Celebrated my husband's birthday at the restaurant on 12/29 with a party of 6. Ordered 2 paellas, 2 appetizers, 4 non-alcoholic beverages (mom and son opted for water), steaks, and garlic chicken for our party of 6. While I have no complaints about the food, my only constructive criticism is the following: 1. Whoever took my reservation over the phone was unprofessional and acted like he was doing me a favor. He seemed uninterested and bored. Perhaps you should find somebody who sounds more welcoming so guests have a good first impression of your establishment, and 2. I did not realize there was a charge for refills. Perhaps it was written on the menu, but it would have been nice if the waiter at least told us that there was a refill charge so I could make an informed decision. Will revisit the restaurant for the food. Staff other than the individual taking the reservation were professional. read more

One of the best steaks I have ever had. The service was amazing...the owner kept checking in on, if anything it was a little too much...but we like that they give such great service in a time when most people/places don't. About 25-30 years ago, maybe when they first opened, this place used to be one of our special occasion restaurants. Over time, as our palates changed, and maybe our income was a little better, we found other special occasion places. While we still had the occasional Spanish/Portuguese meal we always wound up someplace else depending who we were meeting up with and where they were coming from. Despite my long time absence, I always had a very positive remembrance of this place. Well, I returned for lunch the other day and enjoyed an excellent meal with outstanding and friendly service. My friend had a glass of sangria which he said was very tasty. I stuck to a soft drink as it was an early lunch. I had a lunch special that was a chicken breast covered with shrimp and garlic sauce, accompanied by rice, vegetables and Spanish fried potatoes. Everything was delicious and the portion was quite large. Normally $14.95 would be a bit high for lunch but it was a lot of good food. My friend's $10.95 shrimp in garlic sauce luncheon was accompanied by rice and potatoes. The shrimp portion was much larger than one normally sees in the similarly price appetizer. He said it tasted excellent too. They also put out a hot and crusty bread with an olive oil with garlic and red peppers dipping sauce. After lunch we went into the bar for cappuccino and espresso and to watch the World Cup. It's really not a p[lace to watch the game so we left at halftime very full and very happy. read more

This spot never disappoints, came here for my wife's birthday. The attention and to details by the wait staff was on point. I mentioned it was my wife's birthday and they sang happy birthday to her when delivering the dessert. We had paella and t-bone & shrimp special, it was delicious as all the other times we've visited in the past. No need to go to Newark, believe me. My second time here. This is a great little place, not very far physically but worlds away gastronomically (and emotionally) from all of the strip malls, fast food, and unending traffic in other parts of Piscataway. Bread and olive oil are on the table in two minutes or less. The bread is hot, fresh, and there's a lot of it. Water glasses are filled promptly, and often. Entrees are spiced well without being too salty, which many other Spanish restaurants simply don't get right. Seafood was fresh and the aromas of other dishes passing by was quite appetizing. Service is quick and pleasant. My brother is a fan of Forno's in Newark (who isn't?) but said this place was a fine addition to our list and, since we usually don't want to travel all the way to Newark from Middlesex unless we're going to a Devils game, makes it likely we'll come here a few times a year. One quibble we have is that while there was still food on our plates, the hovering server came by and rudely asked us if we were finished so he could clear the table; and he did so more than once. Here's a hint: go somewhere else and LEAVE US ALONE until it's absolutely clear that we've finished, pushed our plates away, and are no longer even considering picking up that last shrimp or dipping that last piece of bread. Seriously--just go away until we're done and DON'T HOVER! But we will be back for sure. read more

We ordered the paella and the dish came in a skillet and looked tasty. That's where it ended, The dish was scorched and the entire bottom layer of rice was blackened. Met up with some friends here for some drinks. We end up having a couple of pitchers of Sangrias. Which was pretty delicious. I don't eat shellfish, but their menu was loaded with it. We did settle for the steak and shrimp. (Shrimp on the side please) the steak was great, cooked to perfection. When they brought it out it was still cooking. Was at this restaurant about a week ago and I have to say food isn't as good since the new ownership. I had Sangria and the fruit looked like it was spoiled. You couldn't even tell what fruit it was. I ordered the jumbo shrimp for $27 and got a plate of shrimp no bigger than a little bit over an inch (this is not "JUMBO"} and the taste was so bland I had to add hot sauce. Just about everything we ordered had little flavor. Service is ok, the young girl that was not our waiter took care of us better then our own waiter. I got sick the day after and I wonder if it was from the Sangria! I don't see any reason to return to this establishment. read more

We had a wonderful experience at the Spain Inn. We booked a room for a repast. We were scheduled to arrive at 3pm, but the funeral etc ended earlier than we thought. We called to push the time up an hour and Luis and his staff were very accommodating. We walked into a huge beautiful spread of food that was by all accounts delicious. They surpassed our expectations, especially for the amount that we paid for this event. The staff was attentive, nice and very professional. The only reason why I didn't give them 5 stars is because the interior needs some sprucing up. I order paella valenciana. Saturday evening. Let me tell you it's the worst paella ever. The rice was peal no color whatsoever and taste. The lobster tail was dry and hard. They didn't even put chorizo on it. I don't know if it's because of the covid 19. Save your money, food was really bad. We order the paella. It was over cook, the lobster was over cook, the chicken was dry ,the shrimp was over cook, the rice was over cook. I went to this place with high expectations after reading some of the reviews. I ordered ahead for pick up and it was ready in less than 20 minutes. I only live a few blocks away so it was convenient. The order consisted of chicken cutlets in wine sauce, shrimp with garlic sauce, the spanish sausage appetizer and the customary rice and vegetable sides. On entering the restaurant my first thought was that this place needed a visit from Gordon Ramsey. WOW this place is dated. I sat at the bar while waiting for my order and was reticent to even put my arms on the bar. The bar top is well past its prime. The bar stools are dingy, even with the dim lighting. Getting home with the food I was still expecting good things. The sausage was sliced thin on a bed of cabbage that was also sliced thin. This led to eating a little cabbage with every bite of sausage or getting frustrated trying to pick the cabbage out of sausage. The chicken was not tasty at all. I actually just put hot sauce on it so I wouldn't waste the money spent. The Shrimp was not as bad as the chicken, but was still not anywhere near what it should have been given the cost. The rice is of the par-boiled variety which lends itself to a hard texture. I got so frustrated with the food I actually gave in and had ramen instead. I will NOT be visiting this place again under any circumstance. There are a couple of other Spanish/ Portuguese places within a mile or so that are on par with the price with much better quality. read more

Spain Inn is a throwback to a bygone era of the big, old school dining experience. Their food is billed as a mix of Spanish and Portuguese and it is impressive. First off the restaurant looks to be a converted home that's been expanded upon. This place is rather huge, due to wedding receptions and rehearsals taking place fairly often it seems. If you have a large group and you're in the area, this is your spot! I had the Monkfish with shrimp topped with a light lemon cream sauce. It was not expensive by any means and the portion was so big I had to get a "go" box. Let me take a moment to rave about their Sangria, which is wonderful, tasty and 3 glasses just weren't enough. Service was quick and snappy, definitely a professional staff. You have to appreciate a restaurant that goes out of their way to make you feel at home. read more

I have 2 main points regarding this place: First and foremost, we ate here in December as a party of 8. Needless to say, we ate a lot and spent a lot. Guess how we were rewarded? One of our family members had his work cell phone STOLEN!!! After investigation, we realized that one of the employees confiscated it. "Oh, it has never happened here before!" whined the owner. Yeah, buddy, it did happen. A report has been filed. Secondly, this was my 3rd time eating here and to me, the food is mediocre. We went to Spain Inn last night and had a really great meal. We started with two appetizers. Chorizo, and then an avocado special. Both were delicious. Of course we had white sangria- which also was great. We ended up having two pitchers amongst the three of us but it was well worth it. We all surprisingly had the same course, all cooked differently but everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was kind of more pricy than two stars in my honest opinion - more like 3 to 3.5 but overall we had a good experience. I've driven passed this restaurant at least a thousand times and never went. It would be good for a "classier" date night where you're ok with spending about a hundred bucks for a meal for 2. We enjoyed a wonderful meal for my mother's 82nd birthday. The food was terrific and the entire staff was amazing, especially Hector and Gisella. We shared the clams casino and shrimp in garlic sauce for appetizers. Both were very tasty. Mom had the Paella, I had the Mariscada in green sauce and my husband the Mariscada in red sauce. All portions were super generous and delicious. Hector went out of his way to give Mom a birthday desert with a candle. I have to say that with serving regular dinner guests and hosting what looked like two parties, the staff and waiters were on point!! We ordered a few apps, fried calamari and chorizo, and both were tasty and came out fast. Most of my family had seafood and loved their dishes with still more to take home. This place is absolutely awesome! The food is northern coastal Spanish and tremendously good all the way around. One of the few places I go well out of my way to still visit almost two decades later just for the fare. The service is excellent and friendly and they make the best pitchers of sangria I've ever had. The dishes I highly suggest are the filet mignon (not on the stone), the shrimp and garlic appetizer and the piaya, And wash it down with the homemade sangria of course.
