I am never taking my dog here as her regular care provider anymore. my dog got into a serious accident and I needed and all they told me is "we're booked so you're going to have to wait till the end of the day".... If I could give zero stars I would. I'll give one because I have to and because there is one pleasant woman that works the front counter. I've been going here for a couple of years with my pitbull (aka my child). Getting quality service for my dog is a priority because she is so special and I'm always willing to do what it takes for her to be healthy. The people who work here do not have a slight concept about how to be kind to people who are just trying to take care of their animal. My dog has had some weird health complications. As a rescue, she came with some issues. Specifically she has a mass on her side. I've spent over two thousand dollars at this vet to try and have them diagnose the issue. They've told me MANY different things. The first time they said "don't worry, just give her the best life you can". So I went on after xrays and ultrasounds. Next time, I bring her in for a cough. This other doctor says "you are a negligent owner for waiting to address her cough and the cough is because of the mass. Her breathing is the worst I've ever heard, etc etc etc". This happened maybe a month and a half a part. So I spend more money on xrays and ultrasounds. This doctor (and I wish I knew her name) said my dog was basically bound to die of cancer and that she would refer me to an oncologist. Previous to this visit, I tried to schedule an appointment but they wouldn't let me! They said I needed to bring her in ASAP but like most people I work a full week 9-5. They didn't give me an option to make an appointment and decided for me that I would do a walk in. Wtf? Then, since I did the walk-in they wouldn't let me use my military discount which I use every time. These people are the furthest thing from quality. Stay away from here. They will disregard and disrespect you and your pet. After going to the specialist and spending another $1000 I was told that it was not cancerous. My pittie is fine and we are moving on to a better vet. We will NEVER come back here. read more

This vet has taken care of our crew of pets for 2yrs now. They have always been honest/compassionate and knowledgeable. We have had some extreme lows with the loss of two of our fur babies but they treated them and us with dignity and caring. They have also helped with our other babies and understand how much each of them means to us. I would highly recommend this clinic. read more

Okay so, my wife and I have been bringing our dogs to this vet for the past year and a half now. Last October we bought a package of flea meds for them. Well, fast forward to the beginning of this year, I call to make an appointment to get my dogs shots and they inform me that the flea medication we purchased was not paid for. So, this being many months later I did not have the paper receipt anymore. So I printed my bank statement for the exact date and amount that was charged because we paid it in full. Since January this year (it is august now) I have been trying to clear my account with the manager only to be told she's only in office Monday and Friday so we have called every Monday and Friday to clear this and she's always "not in anymore" after the first half hour.... So my dogs haven't received any care from them because they won't clear our account. Completely unprofessional and rude as well. Would never take my fur babies here again... period. read more

Always always get a second opinion. This office may be okay for basic care such as shots. But for more serious things we have found they are unwilling to go beyond basic care and seem to be negligent. In my experience our last three dogs have been mistreated in regards to serious health issues. For example, our dog had a tumor on her leg. We took her in to have the vet examined it. She was misdiagnosed with an impact injury. After three months of it staying the same size we took her back in and was diagnosed with cancer. After having surgery that day and talking with the vet once the results came we felt as if the vet didn't have answers to any of our question. We walked away feeling defeated with no hope for treatment or recovery. Thankfully we fallowed our instincts and got a second opinion at an oncologist (pricey just a heads up) She apologized for the mis guidance of the Spanaway veterinarian clinic and told us there are indeed lot of options for our dog. We will not be taking our animals back to the Spanaway Veterinary clinic and would never recommend this vet office to anyone. read more

I've been using this clinic for 18 years. I love them! The staff is amazing. From checkin to checking out you know your pet is cared for. The cost is reasonable for the care you get. They always tell you ahead of time if any cost above the exam and how important each test and medication is to your pets care. They always try to make your pet comfortable and if there is an issue with your pet not liking a certain person they will do what it takes to make your pet relax. For example a formerly abused pet doesn't like a Male employee they will switch out to a female. They are compassionate people and you know they love their jobs! read more

Been taking my dogs there since they were puppies, since 2007-08. Was okay with service and liked the vets. And, I will state that my feathers do not get ruffled easily. But I pulled my pet records today and am switching to Tahoma Vet due to an incident this morning with a receptionist and the simple lack of care/follow up after I called back and verbalized my distress was enough to make me get on here and post a review. I was just trying to find out if I should bring them in to be looked at due to flea bites/bumps on their back. I will further advise family and friends to go elsewhere. Tip: if you are answering phones and don't know anything, put someone else on the phone who does or offer to have a vet call you when they have time. Don't stress your long term customers out by saying "it depends" repeatedly and not giving them any sort of direction with their concerns. read more

The doctors are great and provide excellent care for our pets!!! Why the mediocre review then?!? Because the front desk is completely inept. I walked in for a 730 appointment at 735. I had called and talked to Tina that I would be a few minutes late. Tina was friendly and professional and said no worries at all. I arrive at 735, there's two ladies at the front desk, one lady is helping other folks, the other girl (Amanda) is looking at her computer and her paperwork and does not look at me at all. I have my cat with me. There's two large, intact male dogs that go crazy--- barking and lunging over my cat in the carrier. Their owners are great and try to calm the dogs down. Neither front desk lady looks up to acknowledge the ruckus or me and my cat. However one girl (Amanda) does pick up the phone, call to the back and say "hey can someone come get the surgery dogs?" I think that took ten seconds. I'm hopeful she can take ten seconds to acknowledge me and Kitty I put my cat around the corner, into the waiting area away from the sight of the two large, barking male dogs. I come back and stand at the front desk area again. I wait for a bit then ask "do I check in with you?" to the older lady at the front. She doesn't answer my question but says "can't you see I'm helping someone else?" Of course I can, that wasn't my question! I'm trying to figure out who to check in with. At 745, I tell the other girl, (Amanda --who is still working on paperwork and ignoring me--- the only customer standing in front of her), that I'm going to go around the corner to the waiting area with my cat and we had a 730 appt. "Do you want my name so you can let them know we're here?" She looks up long enough to relay her disapproval, and let me know that she is busy. Let me clarify that I have worked the front desk and it takes 10 seconds to acknowledge your patient and let them know you're aware of them. It takes perhaps 45-60 seconds to acknowledge a patient, put their chart up and let the back know "hey your 730 has arrived". Neither female at the front desk thought me or Kitty were worth acknowledging. At this time, it's 745 and a technician comes out, obviously looking for the no-show 730 appointment, asks my name and offers to help. Technician Hillary is awesome. She pulls my file (even tho my appointment was made the day prior, the front desk did not have my chart ready), and directs us to a room. Hillary was professional, kind to my cat, very much put me and Kitty at ease. I got to see Dr. Slaybaugh, he's friendly and professional. I really like all the doctors here. On top of the medical treatment that Kitty needed, I went ahead and got vaccines. In the exam and treatment room, things are golden. Absolutely a 5-star experience!! Back to the front desk to pay and check out. Uh oh. All is well, I'm paying my bill. I tell Amanda, who is checking me out, that my dog needs to come in for vaccinations. Dr. Slaybaugh had taken the time to check my dogs file and let me know what she needed on her vaccines. "Will Bella's vaccines be the same price as Kitty's vaccines?" She said well no because Bella likely won't need the medical treatment that Kitty needed. And I said that's not what I asked. The vaccines are $17 each on the form for the cat. Will they be the same for the dog? She said no he only needs two. I said well I have a girl dog so maybe you're not looking at my account on the computer. I want to make sure she only needs two since Kitty needed three. And she shrugged her shoulders, and said, "oh yeah HER vaccines will be $82 because she only needs two, not three." Let's see. I'm no math genius, but $17 x 2 does not equal $82. She said well there's an office visit to get vaccines. I asked for a post it note, there was a big sigh and she had to get up to go in the back to get a post it note. In short, the front desk sucks and the techs and docs are amazing. Both ends of the spectrum in one place. I will still come here for my medical care but likely take Bella for her shots elsewhere. Just so I only have to deal with the front desk when my animals need their awesome medical staff. read more

All we wanted was a simple check up for our pet...we paid nearly almost $150.00 just to be told its behavior issue on my pet.wtf!! Thats was it! so they said they would take care of him overnight.. come the next day, we look at our bill OMG!! seriously,They dont tell you that's if your pet sleeps over there going to charge you for that.. My usual groomer is on vacation, so I went in on a Sunday morning because it was my only day off from work. I had my two dogs get their nails trimmed and was charged an outrageous $18 each. They didn't even bother to round-out the sharp edges for that price. I was looking to maybe have my dogs being seen here, but won't now since they can't do a proper job with the most simplest of tasks. Thankfully, there are plenty of clinics in the area. My dog Boomer decided to eat 1 lb of chocolate covered peanuts while we were sleeping. We took him in on a Sunday morning without an appointment and a Tech came out right away to see him. Within 15 min the vet was in the room. The cost was low, we were amazed that they did not charge extra for it being a Sunday and that it was an Emergency. Our dog was not able to use his hind legs. We called our existing Vet and they couldn't take him in, suggested we go get an MRI. I called Spanaway Vet. They were GREAT! They saw our dog, gave him a prescription and asked us to follow up if needed. He was much better in one day. I will change from our existing vet to Spanaway Vet going forward. read more

Not sure why the negative reviews here but please allow me to share my experience. I began bringing my first dog here in 2011. Great service, kind and compassionate employees---without exception. From shots to routine visits, staff was WAY above average! My son got married, moved out and of course took the dog. I quickly adopted a new abused x2 dog from the Tacoma Humane Society (GREAT people---see my review). I suddenly realized that my new dog needed surgery to repair his ACL. My dog is only one year old! I was devastated! I cried in the examination room. Staff was so kind and understanding as I scheduled the surgery. Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. "Chip" Rischen fixed my pup's leg. As my pup's leg was healing (10 week post-op) his other back leg's ACL went out. WTF? Dr. "Chip" performed another surgery and so far it has been a success. Currently, my dog (Wesley) is recuperating fine and that is a direct result of the great care and kindness of the Spanaway Veterinary Clinic. All I can say is your place loves animals and is truly humanly compassionate. I say thank you to all staff. You have made my life and Wesley's life immensely better. read more

My dog was having trouble delivering her first puppy. It was coming out feet first, and the head was stuck. The puppy was dead but I couldn't get it out. I called the Spanaway Veterinary Clinic. I tried their suggestion, which was to grease up the puppies head, but when that didn't work they told me to bring her right in. I ran out the door in my pajamas. They took her back immediately. They got the stuck puppy out, and recommended a c-section because the other pup was going to be too large for her to safely deliver. I asked how much that would be and they printed up an estimate that was over $1000, which they needed up front. I told them I didn't have that kind of money. I told them I'd just have to take her home. The tech told me that they needed $25 for today. I had to call and wake my mother up to give them her credit card info for the $25. But when they got her information it suddenly became over $100!!! I started to complain and was told that they didn't know what I was talking about. I told them to get the tech that I had been talking to, but they told me she was busy. Nothing but a bunch of liars and money hungry people at that office!! By the way, my dog passed the next puppy easily since it was HALF THE SIZE of the first pup (something ELSE they lied about). Unless you have money to burn, I'd stay away!! read more

I was a little hesitant to come just because of the reviews talking about the customer service but my sister has come here before. So I called to try and get my American bulldog in because he had broken his canine tooth pretty bad somehow from a fight with my other family dog. I used this clinic for over 17 years. I have my favorites in Vets and Desk help. They have been slowly slipping in the way they keep fees and records. I have been shown 3 deceased pet's charts to choose which ones I had brought in I MADE THE APPOINTMENT ONE WEEK IN ADVANCE ! Then I'd pay one amount and more than once have additional amounts be added after I left the office. Everything that happens to my pets are "MY FAULT" and it's hard to listen to this when I know what occurs in my own home. Mary is excellent and I really learned a lot from her. Darin is a very thorough vet. He always tries to help with discounts if available such as senior or military. Their prices are top in all the area I have been told I believe it.! Through new staff and changes I reluctantly left this care clinic. My dogs are my life and I have a service dog that is very valuable if only to me. I've been taking my dogs (4 over the years) and cat to this clinic for the past 10+ years and have always had wonderful care. Just one example of many (I could write a book): Recently I took my dog Kleo in for a dental cleaning. They discussed all the charges ahead of time (as usual) and while I agreed to all, included a grooming appointment and left on daily errands. I got a call about 30 minutes later to tell me that Kleo was not in need of any cleaning as her teeth were perfect, not a sign of any tartar and no reason to put her under for the cleaning. They could have done the work, needed or not, and I would not have been the wiser. They saved me hundreds of dollars and ensured that I would be confident in any care they recommended in the future. They are professional and kind, I cannot recommend them more highly! read more

I've been hesitant to post about this because I feel like a bad fur mommy for not listening to my gut, but I feel like i need to say something. A couple months ago my olivia had to have her leg removed at the hip. she only had about 2/3rds of a leg there to start with so it wasn't an issue. the issue was i went in because she started leaking clear fluid from a tiny hole on that leg. she was obviously in some discomfort. The vet on duty did not even really look at her leg, nor palpate it. All he did was watched how she walked, gave her an antibiotic shot, and sent us on our way. over the weekend it went from bad to worse. her bone started poking out of the hole, and it would have only gotten worse. If i hadn't of gone there first, her leg would have gotten taken care of quicker and she wouldnt have been in pain for that long. very upsetting read more

I've NEVER had a warm fuzzy feeling from their front desk staff (and almost always they act like they are inconvenienced when you walk through the door) but the doctor always is very gentle and nice so I kept taking her there rather than go through getting records and finding another vet. But man, today, the gal I talked to on the phone when just calling to ask if I could pick up some flea medicine was so incredibly rude and condescending on the phone to me that I have decided enough is enough. If you love your cat, DO NOT LEAVE THEM at the Spanaway Veterinary Clinic Cat Condos. In the past, the clinic took care of my pets and there was never a problem, but last month I left my very healthy cat in the care of this clinic while I went to Europe and he got very sick with an upper respitory infection. That is not the worst part, please read on. When I went to pick my cat up, they took the cat carrier from me and had me pay the bill. They then handed me the cat carrier with my cat inside. WhenI looked inside and he looked a bit strange, but I assumed that he was a bit rattled from being put in the carrier. I drove home and let him out & discovered that his eyes were watering, he was wheezing, his nose was running and he could barely stand! When I called Spanaway Veterinary Clinic, the office manager told me that according to his chart, they had been watching him for 2 days but had not even told me that he was sick when I picked him up. They just took my money, shoved him in the carrier and sent me on my way with a very sick cat. To make a long story short, I immediatly took my poor cat to his regular vet (Banfield at PetCo on South Hill) where he was given excellent care. Spanaway Veterinary Clinic never even called me back, offered to pay his vet bill or checked to see how he was. Do not go there!! read more

We live close to this clinic, and have brought our cats there on a number of occasions, including for routine care, occasional emergency care (cat fights, etc.), etc. The staff has always been kind and warm, and our cats have received good care and treatment. Today we took our much-loved 11 year-old kitty to the clinic on an emergency basis: Her breathing was rapid and labored, and she was clearly in deep trouble, and deteriorating quickly. Dr. Slaybaugh immediately took firm control over the situation. He put her in an oxygen box, gave her a shot, and told us candidly that this was a very precarious and dangerous situation, and that many cats in this condition don't make it. We appreciated his clarity, which allowed us to deal with the situation in a realistic way. We were thrilled that he was able to stabilize her, and we transported her to a clinic which has the staff and equipment to assess her status fully, and to provide round-the-clock monitoring and care, which Spanaway Vet isn't staffed or equipped to provide. In this and any other kitty situation we have brought to this clinic, the staff has been warm, kind, and personally caring. They comfort us, cheer us on, and celebrate with us when things turn out well. We appreciate their kind and humane attitude toward us and our kitties. read more

The Spanaway Veterinary Clinic is THE BEST!!!! I recently moved to the area and tried another vet and grooming place but my little Westie and I love this clinic. It is so convenient to have Vet service and grooming service all in one spot. The groomer is so good if she see's something not quite right she gives a call & I can have the dog looked at all in the same visit. That is right up my alley, with working & trying to schedule every thing if I don't have to go back and forth then you have me sold. The place is spotless and the rates are resonable. I have used the vet services, grooming and boarding. Like I said when the car stops at the clinic my little Westie gets so excited she can't get inside fast enough. The staff is so friendly. They explain all procedures and medications very clearly. I am so glad that they are so close to my house!! read more
