Waited over 20 mins in line and when we got to the front the girl was rude to me and my boyfriends mom. She told us we had to order upstairs but, no sign said that and she said there was. College dive burger joint. Ordered takeout. They seemed moderately busy for a Monday night. Took about 10-12 minutes for my order so that wasn't too bad. You can tell they made it to order so that was nice. Generous portion of the 1/2 order of Okra. I had the hotter than hell burger and it has a great kick that doesn't take away from a well done burger with a good bun. Overall good place that I'd be willing to go back. I came to eat with my daughter after we toured TTU Saturday October 14th. I have always loved coming here - since I was in school. I will not be back! The dirty looking - long red headed "manager" that was working upstairs was a complete A**hole! My daughter accidentally spilled our very full drinks. When he came over to somewhat clean it up I profusely apologized! He mumbled an "uh huh." As the drinks were still pouring on us and the floor my daughter and I both used paper towels off the table to try and help clean up after ourselves. His comment to me then was, "there are towels you know - that you could be using - instead of wasting the paper ones!" And then just stared at us. I'm sorry, what?! He totally ruined our fun morning. Lubbock has 250,000 people or so and I was very excited to head to this restaurant a friend recommended. People were pleasant, I got the fried cheese and chicken sandwhich. Chicken sandwhich was moist and juicy, on a wheat bun that was perfect. Cheese sticks were good and tempura or lightly battered. Only complaint is so much cheese. After you get through the outside batter it's just a lump of cheese. It's hard to describe but just too much raw cheese for the batter and size. We came here our whole time at Tech and frequent it every time we come back. We were following the rules of their sign same as always and when we got to the cash register were told that we weren't able to order because there were no tables. Their sign says to order then sit. Their staff belligerently refused to take our order and told us to step to the side until we could find a table or we could order to go. We were told the sign doesn't apply because it's game day. That's fine, but the sign should change or there should be an employee explaining the change as you come in. The cashier also wouldn't let me order two beers since my husband wasn't with me when I was ordering and she couldn't see his ID which doesn't follow TABC policy which allows you to walk away with two drinks per person and she had verified my ID. So I can order a bucket of beers but not 2 beers? When our food came out our daughter's order was missing and I was told I would need to get back in line to order and pay for it again. My first experience at Spanky's was around 2003. Myself and some co-workers got takeout. My manager got a chicken salad, but when she opened it back at the office the chicken was barely cooked (i.e. raw). This put me off Spanky's for years. I've recently decided to give it another try but had two bad experiences. Both times, the fries were covered in so much salt that I had to spend half my lunch wiping them off with napkins to be able to eat them. And, my burger was *pink* inside. Worse, I wasn't able to do anything about it since the employees never come back to your table after they bring the food. I also wanted another drink but was never asked since I didn't hear from any wait staff. There were three of them clearing a table next to me but none of them had enough time on their hands to serve the customers. Bad food. Worse service. I don't plan to go back ever again. read more

I can't even tell you how many people told me that no trip to Lubbock would be complete without a trip to Spanky's, so we stopped by for dinner last night. I was really impressed with how fresh the salads (i.e. one salad, one bunless burger atop lettuce) were! I never expect that salads will be good at a place known for burgers, and I was very pleasantly surprised! Burger salad is one of my favorite things in the world, and I would definitely order this again. The burgers and chicken strips were excellent, and french fries were delicious. I kept swiping fries from my husband's plate every time he got up to refill his drink. The one let down was the fried pickles. They were unbelievably salty, to the point where they were inedible. Visited this fine Raider establishment on a Saturday night and must say for their famous mozzarella sticks they still got it. Thick n cheesy with ranch or maranera sauce hits the spot. I ordered the Bacon Burger American which wasn't well done cooked however medium well was good enough and with fresh cut fries made for a hearty burger meal. Highly recommended if you wanting a home town college town burger joint atmosphere, the only con was the soda machine was old and disgusting need to upgrade especially price your paying to eat there. read more

The deep fried cheese sticks are as big as a stick of butter so one is plenty unless you're sloppy drunk and desperate for food to soak up the booze.
