We grabbed some takeout tonight and I was SO surprised with how fabulous it was. Mac and cheese is my favorite food on earth and I rarely like the way others make it, but theirs is PERFECT. I just finished up at a local brewery and needed something to eat. I hadn't seen much that caught my eye so I was actually on my way to TGI Friday's. Although I like to try and eat local when I am out of town, the draw of a known quantity sometimes calls to me. As I was headed for Friday's, I drove past Spanx The Hog. Being a lover of BBQ, I did a bootleg turn and power slid into the parking lot, drawing the ire of a local police officer. Ok maybe not but I'll let you decide where I took poetic license... The place was not full by any means. There is a restaurant on one side with a saloon on the other. Yes the decor is a bit kitschy, although I am surprised I even used that word. The decor suits me though. I'm a bit kitschy. The way they roll you just grab a spot and they come over and take your order. My server was Kacie who was just charming although I probably misspelled her name. I ordered up a sweet tea and a three meat combo with brisket, Texas sausage, and pulled pork. I also had sides of collard greens (gotta have greens with my BBQ) and Mac and cheese. The collard greens were really good and the Mac and cheese was also! The brisket was pretty good although I didn't get much flavor without the sauce and there was no discernible smoke ring. The Texas sausage was really good. Great flavor without being uncomfortable spicy. The pulled pork was tender but again not a whole lot of flavor without the sauces. Frankly the sausage was the best of the meats. None of them were bad at all, they just didn't have much flavor until I hit them with the sauce. In my mind BBQ should be good and flavorful to begin with then the sauce should elevate it to heavenly. The sauces were a regular BBQ, a spicy BBQ, and a Carolina sauce. The regular was very mild. The spicy was hardly spicy at all, even for my wimpy palate. And the Carolina was quite good! Overall this is not the greatest BBQ I have ever had. With the sauce it is certainly passable but it didn't wow me. The service did wow me. Everyone was very friendly and Kacie was a sweetheart. Spanx The Hog has good food and is worth a stop for sure. I wasn't overly impressed with the BBQ but it was good. I actually really enjoyed my visit here and would give them my business again. I drive past this place everyday and I finally decided I need to try it and wow am I glad. First of the sweet tea is heavenly. I got the pulled chicken with collard greens, mac n cheese, and Texas toast. It was all very yummy. I noticed on the menu they had a blueberry bbq sauce which I haven't seen anywhere so I felt inclined to try. It was great I even mixed a little of it in with the regular bbq sauce. When it comes to excuses concerning Covid this one takes the cake. I have gone to this place a few times in the past couple of years but today saw some thing I have never seen before at this restaurant or any restaurant. They now have an additional charge if you use a debit or credit card to pay your bill. When the bill is small it doesn't seem like a lot but with their prices the bill can add up fast and with the card charge of about 4% that can increase your bill significantly. When asked the reason that was given was because of Covid and other restaurants are doing it, which I have yet to see any other restaurant do it. So now they have a cash price versus a card price, but you don't know it until you get your bill. Unless you carry cash you are forced to pay the additional charge. Very disappointing! If you need to raise your prices to cover your expenses then do that but don't try to put the blame on something that has nothing to do with why you need to raise your prices. read more

Excellent food. We used this restaurant to cater another party for us. 35 guests. Easy to do, large menu choices for everyone. As I was there ordering the menu items, I saw another customer come in for catering services. She said it's what her guests prefer to eat for dinner. She's used them before also. We ordered shredded chicken, pork, beans, buns, Mac n cheese (2 of those as they are the best ever.) Potato salad. (One of my new favorites). Plenty of sauce too. This place was alright. The food was decent. My issue was with the service. The waitress was very nice. But, she managed to mess a few things up. When ordering my combo platter she asked, "which two sides would you like?" When, little to my knowledge, only one side was included in the combo. This left me in an awkward position when the check came. When I asked the waitress she had to ask her boss but did take off the $4 extra charge. However, she then added and extra charge to my check for an extra side of cole slaw that my friend got, on a separate check. I had to go back to them to awkwardly ask to adjust the bill three times. Which was incredibly annoying. You'd think they could figure out a check without inconveniencing their customer to the point of frustration. Tried this friendly strip mall home-style BBQ spot. I opted for heir "special" (I think it was appropriately called "when pigs fly"): a chicken breast topped with shredded pork sandwich. Wow, this former vegetarian pigged out and enjoyed every bite slathered with my generous squeeze of BBQ sauce. The chicken was tasty as it was rubbed with some tasty seasonings that spruced it up. It was just OK. My pulled pork sandwich was a bit dry and I feel I make a better boxed mac and cheese and home (not that I do! LOL). My husband had a brisket sandwich and I asked him how it was and he stated it was "good but not great." I enjoyed the baked apples which was one of the two sides that comes with the meal but as it turns out, while they say it comes with two sides, one is a full-sized side and the other is just a stingy amount. Yeah. My mother took me here telling me that this is amazing bbq. They lived in Texas for a time so I trusted them and went. While there we ordered fried okra which was good, collards which was not, and macaroni and cheese which was fine. But then we got the bbq. Specifically we got the brisket. And I'm not even sure that the cut was actually brisket because the width was so very wide. Like 3.5-4" wide with no fat layer in the middle. Now before I continue let me say that I have been learning to smoke competition quality bbq. Im no pit master. But I know what is and isn't quality bbq. And this brisket is some of the worst bbq that I have ever had. It was old people buffet quality bbq. Seriously. I went hungry rather than eat it. First the consistency was all wrong. It was sliced paper thin like in a deli slicer which is weird. It was also watery and falling apart. There was no smoke flavor at all and no visible "pink ring" which is what appears in meat as the smoke penetrates into the cut during smoking. Also as it smokes it should develop a crust on the outside where the smoke and heat sear the rub and meat juices into the cut of meat. There was none at all. In fact I could discern no apparent seasoning at all. It was awful. To their credit they were apologetic about it. But they admitted that the bbq was cooked several days in advance and blamed reheating for why there was no bark and no smoke penetration. But I don't buy it. It was just improperly done and possibly old bbq. Avoid. read more

The information I came across said I would get a rack of ribs for $16.50. All with a "small side", Texas (bigger in Texas!) toast and coleslaw/potato salad. $16.50 for a rack of ribs? What a deal! I called up Spanx and ordered a rack of ribs with spicy bbq sauce. I was informed my total was $21.19. What happened to the $16.50? I know there's tax. But $16.50 to $21.19 ain't no 7% sales tax! Oh well that's alright, $21.19 is still okay for a rack w/ sides. Plus, I'm treating myself. Who cares about a few bucks. During this time, I was also a little (just a little) suspicious that I wasn't asked about what side I wanted or whether I wanted potato salad or coleslaw. Oh well, I figured they would surprise me. Nothing wrong with that. I make the drive over. It's a charming place. The kind of place that makes you think, "Damn! This place has gotta make great ribs!" I was honestly excited, even as I accidentally tripped over their awkwardly placed bench. The service was quick. The cashier person was friendly. She even asked me if I needed utensils (I assumed for the sides I would supposedly be receiving). I politely declined. I had a fork at home. And so I went home to enjoy my $21.19 rack of ribs. Sit down. Open up the bag. Open up the box. No sides. No sides. What the f--- is that? Have you EVER heard of legitimate bbq joint not serving ANY sides with a rack of ribs. That is insane. Shame. Shame. Shame. This was a HUGE deal breaker for me. Let me explain. I was actually a full vegetarian for 3 years. To this day, I still don't eat much meat. When I do, it's usually a treat. And when I go to eat a freaking rack of ribs, I rely on the side dishes to help me digest the meal properly. If I eat a rack of ribs, I'm legitimately going to get sick. Yes, call me a wuss. I deserve it. But this is a worst case scenario. I was fully expecting a random "small side", Texas (big boy Texas) toast and coleslaw/potato salad. But I got nuttin'. Just a sorry "rack" of ribs (more on those later). And no sides means ones of two things here. 1) They don't serve sides with their ribs. In that case, wtf. That's the sign of a poor bbq joint. They deserve a 1 star rating. 2) They forgot my sides. Hey, I understand. People make mistakes. But sometimes they have consequences. If you forgot the sides for an in-house diner, they could have just made some on the fly and apologized. But I'm a to-go order. I'm not about to drive back to the restaurant. And I'm not about to call the manager and complain - I'm not that petty. And unfortunately, they forgot the sides for a Yelp reviewer who happens to place a very high value on side dishes for ribs. ONE STAR. And I need to ask this. Why in the HELL would you offer me utensils if I got ZERO sides? Like what, do you expect me to use a knife and fork to eat my ribs? It's like the person working there was laughing right at me. A total face slap. I knew going into this, they would be getting a bad rating. But I still had the ribs. Maybe, just maybe they could salvage a 2 or 3 star rating if the ribs were great. Nope, they were meh. Just okay. The bbq sauce was admittedly pretty good. But the ribs had gritty charcoal on them - as if they didn't clean their grill. They were meaty. Not as tender as I like. Not bad. But nothing worth $21.19. They were also individually cut, 10 of them total. I ordered a RACK of ribs. I want to break apart my ribs. I know, you gotta fit them in the box. Then, JUST SPLIT THE RACK IN 2. Freaking morons. Smh. So I ate half of the ribs, felt a little sick because I had NO SIDES. Put the rest in my fridge and walked to 7-11 to get some Naked Fruit Juices (they good) to counter-act the ribs. I could have driven, but I didn't want to pull my car out again. I had just run 10 miles the day before (I'm a distance runner) so my legs were sore. Walking was unpleasant. Had to drop another $6 on juice. That's $27.19. So I have a pretty bad taste in my mouth as I write this. If I had gotten sides, Spanx would probably be receiving a 3 or 4 star rating. But I have to rate based on MY experience. And my experience was very bad. My stomach doesn't feel great, and my wallet is $27.19 lighter. I did not have a good time, gosh darn-it! Had better BBQ around town, but this was the only one open later into the evening. Got the ribs, they're alright, can't even remember what else I got, it wasn't all that memorable. What was memorable was the friendly staff, the taxidermy everywhere, all the little pig items, and the fact that the games inside cheat. My husband is a whiz at claw games (where the claw grabs the stuffed animal) and when the claw lifted the animal up into the air, as soon as the claw fully retracted back to the top, it opened and dropped the animal. I found this place on Yelp and knew I wanted to try it. I felt like having BBQ this past Sunday and my BF told me that their food is really good. I'm so happy that I tried this place! People rave about the mac and cheese aside from amazing BBQ of course. When we arrived, we were greeted and felt welcome. We were told we can sit where we like and so we sat at the high top table. I'm so glad we had their special, as it included three wings, ribs and a filler. The wings are smoked with their dry rub and then tossed in the sauce of your choosing. The wings happen to be some of the best I've ever had! You can add as little or as much sauce on them to your liking. Their ribs are so juicy, flavorful and tender and fall off the bone. We had fries and their homemade potato salad as the fillers (sides). We ordered a large mac and cheese to share and it was creamy, cheesy and really delish! The entire meal was more than enough food for the two of us; we ended up taking some home. We even found out the former owner of Spanky's runs this place; which is why they also have cheese steaks on their menu. I got a bbq sundae with shredded chicken, baked beans, slaw, pickle slices and TX toast- that was pretty good and includes a bit of everything you want in one meal. We got potato salad as a side, as well. I enjoyed all of it. The place is huge and very decorated with an antique-y western motif. The staff was super helpful in explaining the menu and accommodating us last minute before closing. These are the same owners of Spanky's Cheesesteaks. Literally just walked out of this place after waiting 1+ hour for our food... no, I'm not exaggerating... it wasn't after we got mad (again, after waiting for 1+ hour) that they offered to pack our food to go and not charge us for it, which we refused (too little too late at that point)... Piece of advice for the owner if he/she ever reads this... rather than offering free food after someone gets mad for your lack of professionalism, focus on training your staff and bettering your system which definitely sucks (serving 2 tables that got there after us, didn't help either) plenty of BBQ places to chose from in South FL... don't act like you guys are the only ones read more

The food here was good but not great. Well the collard greens were but the portion was relatively small, served in a small cup that usually is used for condiments. The ribs were eh- I've had better. read more

Quiet country themed place, food was pretty good, prices are even better. Staff is very friendly and attentive, I like that. We have eaten here a couple of times and always leave satisfied. read more
