So grateful for this place! I got my dog here about five years ago I was very careful with the dog I selected because I knew I wanted a more mellow dog and sometimes shelter dogs have behavioral problems. I went a couple times to look around. Somehow I found the perfect pup! The staff was friendly and helpful. Sometimes application processes are difficult but it worked out for me because even though I was living in an apartment at the time and they said a husky might not be a good fit I assured them that I live across the street from the dog park and plan to go every day. I think I had to get my landlords permission and once I had that they spayed her and sent me home with Luna. Amazingly she was two years old and considered an adult so she was only $90! Luna turned out to be the most low energy husky I've ever met. I even made her my service dog to help me with a disability. I will always rescue dogs. The staff works with the dogs to socialize them and teach them good behavior so they are more likely to be adopted. That is why there is such good dogs here. This place is kept VERY clean and tidy. I applaud them for that definitely. All of the animals seem well taken care of, and happy! The reason why I give them 3 stars: My sister, mom, and I got to the location, and go inside to rescue Bella the Pitbull. My sister's friend put her in the shelter due to reasons I won't explain, and she only had till Saturday until they euthanized her. We were not going to let that happen. Especially since my sister has known Bella since she was a puppy! We were at the administration desk, and this lady was there with a tiny little puppy in a box. She was making up some bullshiiet lie saying that she found a box of puppies in her mom's backyard, and she needs to give them away. I was mentioning how cute the puppy was, and she asked if we wanted it. We didn't necessarily say yes, but she handed over the puppy to us and ran!!!! All of a sudden, this huge African American security guard comes busting through the walls asking where the puppy came from. I told him the story..and he goes, "She just left?! You didn't stop her?! She was supposed to fill out the forms!" How the heeeelll am I supposed to know this?! It all happened so quickly, I didn't even know what the feck was going on. And he was getting all mad at my sister and I for it! He then proceeds to say, "Since you guys took it from her personally, this puppy is now YOUR responsibility! YOU guys have to pay the release fee blahblahblah." I was like..wow..calm your ass down, we have no problem with any of that sir. Geesus. Then he just disappeared. -_- Since that puppy was ours now, named Menchi :] , I had to wait outside while my sister went to go get Bella. Tell me why it took about an hour for her just to go see Bella, and for them to tell her that we couldn't take her home that day due to her having to get spayed first?!?!?! Why couldn't they tell us that from the very beginning? It was overly time consuming for no reason. It just didn't seem very well organized. I adopted 2 kittens. One 2 months and one 4 months old. The adoption process went well but im finding that my 4 month old has worms. Also my 2 month old has bad diarrhea.. It got so bad that i took her to the emergency vet. The vet said it could be something from the shelter since theyre housed around so many other cats or the pain med that i opted in to get after their spay since i thought itd make them more comfortable. Turns out the med is way too strong for my tiny 2 month old who weighs just over 2 lbs. Pretty nice animal shelter. The entire place is quite large and well kept. Green field areas to take the dogs to play as well. They have many animals, so I'm not sure it they kill them if they run out of space (I think they do). I haven't adopted any animal from here - yet. I just moved to Long Beach and wanted to donate towels and blankets that I don't need anymore. I emailed the shelter and asked if they accept these donations and also inquired about a receipt for my taxes. They accept all sorts of donations and do give receipts! I have gone several times to just see the animals they have and check out the facility. It's huge, clean, and the animals look well cared for. One dog area always smells like poop, but what can you do? The one gripe I have is that in order to go outside to see the dogs, you have to go inside through the adoptions area where they have all the cats. This is not a problem for me directly, but my fiancé is allergic to cats and just wants to see the dogs. Thankfully it hasn't been an issue since we just hurry passed all the cute fuzzy kitties and head out to the pups. I appreciate that they keep their available adoptable animals current on their website too. I browse it more than I should... It's just going to lead me to taking home a furkid sooner rather than later. read more

On 11/1/20 I adopted my senior cat Remy from spcaLa. The adoption process in the day of Covid-19 was seamless. It made me sad to not meet Remy in person because of Covid. However detailed descriptions, the videos and pictures Karina, Monique and Tabitha sent of my new buddy helped me make my decision. Remy is a 9 year old female whose family of 9 years had to surrender her to the shelter because their landlord no longer allowed them to have a pet. Their sadness is my joy as I couldn't ask for a sweeter, more affectionate fur buddy. My puppy Wally is also equally loving being boarded here... I LOVE this spot for boarding my two cats. They get to share a little condo and if its not too crowded they lounge around i the awesome kitty atrium. I secretly suspect my cats would like me to "forget" them there they seem so stoked when i come to pick them up. There are cheaper places (you have to buy a membership to get the lowest rate) but the price is totally worth it and i think of it as a little vacation for the felines. p.s. I would give this place 20 stars if I could. After going to a few rescues, I was still in search of my perfect dog when I stumbled across the SPCA. Words cannot describe how impressed I was with the place. They had so many awesome dogs and I wanted to take them all home with me, but the second I saw a little 4.5 pound ball of bones and matted fur, I knew he was the one. A few days (he had to be neutered) and $100 later (very, very reasonable...plus you're saving a life!), Nibbley came home with me. Ok, I just started crying. How embarrassing. He is the most fantastic dog, and I highly, highly recommend this shelter. They also offer training classes and have a very cute store. I believe that they have even expanded since I got my dog. They don't get any government or parent company funding, so even if you can't bring home a new furry best friend, consider a small donation to this wonderful place. read more

Just got an incredibly wonderful dog at spcaLA in Long Beach yesterday. Tabitha Keefe and the rest of the staff really made it a great experience too. They thought of everything to make sure my new dog was going to be a perfect fit for my home and family, as well as making sure my home and family were a perfect fit for the dog. I spent the day with my new dog starting with the initial introduction at the shelter, bringing my current dog for a successful meet and greet, quick trip to the Vet office for a checkup and bath, and ending with a long walk with my son and both of the family dogs. People have asked me if I'm going to get another dog. Not in my current residence, as no pets are allowed. Though in my lifetime I've had a range of pets, from 2 dogs, a parrot, a turtle, a number of parakeets, a canary, a cockatiel, a hamster and a guinea pig. At least I didn't get a half wolf or a gosling. That's what one of my cousin's daughter's got and the gosling would attack her now ex-boyfriend you know where. The half wolf was banned from her grandfather's house. If I were to get a pet, I would likely get one here. This is the most well maintained shelter I've seen yet. Long ago, my brother got a Dalmatian dog from a shelter. She got lost and I went to several shelters to find her. One of those was in South Central, which left me in tears. Mostly from the way one of the staff spoke to me. Another one in Santa Monica left me sad. I'm glad she didn't end up at either shelter. Thank goodness she was found by another Dalmatian dog and his owner a taxi driver, hidden, underneath a bush. However this shelter made me perk up. Not only was there a big grassy fenced off area for dogs to play in, I noticed bones and toys in the play areas. It seemed as though less than a dozen of the dogs looked diseased, and the ones that were, had signs posted on the dog's kennels. The majority of the dogs looked healthy, alert and as relaxed as they could be, given the circumstances. read more

Located next to the 605 freeway, off of Spring St and part of the El Dorado Park, I came here with my fiance one day just to look at all the dogs that are up for adoption. This place is pretty big and has a lot of poor dogs just waiting to get adopted by you (this place is a kill shelter because unfortunately they do not have enough space to hold all of these pets forever... sad, so please think of adoption first because you will safe a life and you are getting a great companion at a steal price). In general, this place is pretty clean (although you do smell pee and poop and of course the smell of dog when you walk into the next shelter unit). To adopt a pet here, it is only $125, which includes your pet to be spayed or neutered, microchiped and all vaccinations. This place also has cats, small pets like rabbits and birds, as well in case you are not interested in adopting a dog. There is plenty of parking and it is easy to get to. When you get to the front entrance where this is a toll booth, you can tell the person working there that you are here to visit the shelter and you will not get charged a fee (if you come to the El Dorado Park an hour before closing, usually there is no one working at the toll booth so you can just come on in for free) This is a great place to come to first when you are considering to adopt a new friend. read more

A week after I wrote the previous review, we came back and finally adopted a Siberian Husky named Baby (we renamed her Ororo Storm) from the Long Beach Animal Care through SPCALA. We couldn't have asked for a better place to adopt this adorable new member to our family. She is such a sweetheart and we love her so much already! Couldn't be happier! The place was clean and very spacious. The employees were kind and very knowledgeable. We went there two weekends in a roll after our 11-year old dog passed wanting to adopt another dog. We haven't found the one that connected with us yet, so we went on just browsing through the cats. We interacted with one kitten in a clean private room with some toys. The kitten was playful but not overly so. When I rubbed its head, he started purring. We ended up adopting the newest member of our family right there on Saturday. The employees told us how to introduce a new kitty to our current cat and explained to us very thoroughly, so we were equipped with the knowledge when we brought the kitten home. The adoption fee was $125. The kitten was already neutered and chipped. The chip registration costs $19.95 which you do it online at home. And all his vaccine shots were up to date, as well as flea prevention. As we were filling out the paperwork, there were two other families wanting to see the kitten as well. They were all just standing right in front of his cage and wouldn't go away. We felt so lucky we got him just minutes before others. The kitten has been like a shadow to us following us everywhere. He likes to be rubbed and held. He started purring when he is gently stroked and was genuinely content to be with us. He totally melted our hearts, and we couldn't be happier. Now he sleeps with us and insist on cuddling next to our head when he does. Sooooooo cute! After I Googled his breed, it turn out he was a seal pointed Ragdoll which is the most ideal cat for me, because they are major lap cats and actually behaves more like a dog than a cat. This is a ginormous place. I would say that it's even nicer than boarding places. The dogs are kept in "the village" consisting of 3-5 houses with separate kennels for each dog or pair of dogs. Each of these spaces consist of a separate outdoor area where they can walk inside and outside. It's very spacious and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. They have a bunch of dogs big and small. Cats too. I think the most common dog I saw there were chihuahuas that were strays. I wish I could take all of these smaller dogs to NYC because a common complaint I hear from fellow pet parents is that they had to go outside of the city to find a small sized dog, or even a non bully type dog. It's pretty sad to see uninformed consumers at pet stores, when you can adopt one of these well cared for little guys for way less money. read more

Unprofessional rude workers. Front desk is rude, came to adopt a dog and everyone is so unorganized no coordination or anything. Being denied for a dog because the dog would be inside and outside, and it being a golden retriever? I don't understand, do they not understand they need a yard to play and not just be in doors all day. yet when being denied they said I can go look at the other dogs that THEY have outside, and why is it okay for me to adopt a dog other then a golden and be accepted for it. Now I usually laugh at people who are sue happy but after reading the negative reviews of people who have been wronged by this company I have half a mind to. I don't want money I want what they wronged us righted. I want people to learn from our experience. We found an amazing stray puppy and took her in for a few days. We scheduled a vet visit to check for a chip and found none. After the vet my husband wanted to make sure if she had an owner they had the chance to get her back. Upon dropping her off the receptionist assured him if there is no claim she would rightfully be returned to us. We fell in love with her from day one. Only when he went to get her back he was met with the same stupid raffle every negative review on here says. He was first in line was forced to fill out the paperwork. Because of this stress he messed up on some part of the form and was DENIED. When I called to complain that they were in the wrong the manager said how can she be your puppy after only three days. I was livid for anyone who is a dog owner knows the dog makes the family from day one. They just sold her of to the next bidder without a care that she already had a family waiting to welcome her back. When they discovered they were wrong and the intern that made the mistake with the excuse she was going on lunch they respond well be assured she got adopted to a good family. I don't care who adopted her IT's not our family! It's like they feel like they are playing Judge in getting to choose! They don't know our families, they don't know our lives. Let me add that when I was in college I adopted a puppy in San Diego and they had a system that worked which was on first come basis and on an hourly spread so each person got an hour to have the chance and the next person would be notified after. Not this as soon as they make the judgement. This raffle doesn't think about the dog or the owners. So whoever owns her now I would like to say you may be a good person but she had a family who loved her and have fought to get her back and lost. We're not pressing charges because it won't get her back and again we don't want the money. But so everyone knows their legal rights, what they did to us was unjust. If you find a stray find somewhere else to take them because they don't deserve to be treated like an object. If someone has more balls than us let us know and we'll join you in court.
