I tried to take some out of town friends to Speakeasy last night after a great dinner in downtown Austin because they were meeting some friends there and James at the door would not let us in because we had a doggy bag from a restaurant to take home. I've lived in Austin for 20 yrs or more and have not ever been turned away at the door and thought it was ridiculous that we had to throw away our high priced food to go in to hear some music before going to our homes. I asked if the owner was there and he said that he was, so I requested to talk to him to figure out what was I suppose to do with my food. We waited and waited and they never called the owner to come out and speak to us. I later found out from the owner on facebook that he wasn't even at Speakeasy, so the doorman lied to us. After the owner found out about this his only response is even in this economy our numbers are up and we must be doing something right. Totally discounted our bad experience. It only takes one bad experience for me and I won't return nor refer my friends locally or out of town guest to go there. Big mistake, read more

We took a couple in from out of town for a few drinks and some live music Friday night. We got there about 11:30 pm and there were still tables available to sit. There was a $5 cover and the band Sauce was playing- they were absolutely fabulous! We waited around 10 minutes for a cocktail waitress, but she was attentive after our first round. My only complaint was when I asked for a drink menu she wasn't sure if they had one. I was drinking wine so I wanted to know what I was ordering, she came back and said, "We have a few different Chardonnays and a Pinot Grigio for white wine". I wish they had a printed menu so I would have better been able to order. read more

What happened to the speakeasy I used to enjoy visiting? So many thing were wrong with my most recent visit: - asked the bartender to see a drink menu and got the blankest stare: "really? you really want to see a drink menu?" "yes. that's why i asked." "well. ok......just to let you know we probably don't have half the things listed in there." -opened a tab with a waitress (I already had one with the bar but they couldn't combine it) and my card was pre-authorized for $50. -my friend was poured a glass of wine that had gone bad and was basically vinegar. when we took it back no one offered another glass of wine or any money back. One plus is that they do have free water - as was advertised by the person at the door. read more

To start on a positive note, it's a pretty cool bar with thee levels and had a cover band on the first floor, bowling on the second, and a dj on the top floor. There was also a nice view of the city. Now on to why I'm giving this bar one star. We went there on a Friday night while our friends were in town and there was a $10 cover, which is fine. But when we tried to order drinks, the blonde bartender asked to see our ids, even though they already checked them at the door. So we asked them why we had to see our ids again and the bartender freaked out and refused to serve us. Granted, it's a bar so we had to yell and I think she thought we were being aggressive. However, it's ridiculous to pay a $10 cover and then be refused drinks inside. Also, we only had a couple drinks previously. To end, I will never being going back to this bar. It doesn't have the spirit of Austin and I do not recommend going there! read more

I spent the rest of my New Years Eve at this place. We didn't go downtown with the intent of going to Speakeasy, but my friend met a guy who got us in for free! The BAD: I was dismayed by the amount of freaking stairs there were! I mean come on, one wrong step and my drunk ass would've kissed the floor! The GOOD: Well, again, it was NYE and I was kinda drunk, but I wasn't so drunk that I couldn't appreciate the view! Absolutely gorgeous view of downtown Austin! Very cute decor, too! Oh and they had a DJ that played a good mix.... I didn't pay for any of my drinks, so I couldn't tell you if they were too pricey or not, but they were good! Its a bar with a giant rooftop patio covered with a tent. During the winter they have the ability to close the tent up so that it isn't really even a patio anymore. They have lots of comfortable seating all around the patio and it has some decent views of downtown Austin. I've hardly ever spent anytime in this bar other than on the patio. Overall this is a decent place to hang out if you're in a patio type mood and want to grab a few drinks. read more

I never felt more unwelcomed in my life. There was no one in the bar and I asked if I could see the mezzanine and they said no. "They had parties meanwhile no one was in the bar." We walked by here after dinner and popped in for some liveband and shuffleboard. We played upstairs while we waited on the band (great classics were covered, by the way) and we had a blast singing along. The drinks were decent - the bartender was an absolutely sweetheart and was very ind to keep an eye on us (its like herding cats sometimes) to make sure our drinks were full and we were having a good time. Ultimately, we left after a bit to go check out some other places, but we easily could have stayed and played around most of the evening! Side note: its a long walk to the bathrooms downstairs when you're upstairs bowling or playing shuffleboard, so don't wait until you *REALLY* have to pee to try and find the bathroom (not speaking from experience or anything). read more

Not too impressed, really. We went there to catch one of our favorite Austin bands, More Cowbell. The place was dirty, too many of the patrons were out-of-control drunk, there was a hole on the dance floor and the drinks were expensive and bad. I ordered Grey Goose vodka drinks and could swear that they were substituting cheap vodka instead. Although we had a good time dancing, the place was just too raunchy for me. If I'm going to pay a $10 cover and $10 a drink, the ambience, drinks and service better be top notch. Speakeasy's just didn't deliver. read more

Great place to go. The upstairs bar was a huge party full of college kids if that is what you like. I'm a little old for that so I went downstairs and listened to an incredible singer named Scott Strickland. If you ever see that name you should really check him out. While upstairs was party central, the downstairs was almost empty. I was able to relax and listen to some great music. The bartender's name was Alex and she just delightful. Very friendly, attentive, and made a great drink. I ask for a special drink that is just a concoction from a friend and she nailed it. Had a great time. It is a good way to get away from the craziness of 6th street yet close enough to go back if you want to later. Recommend it without reservation. read more

Came by for some SXSW activities and it's a pretty neat space with three separate levels. The top one being a roof deck and with the middle one playing host to a secret two-lane bowling alley. Also, since the crowd wasn't all that crazy, we didn't have to pay cover. read more

This review is for 3.5 stars. Was little underwhelmed in Speakeasy overall. Expected a more cocktail experience with the name but was given a concert venue with multiple levels and stages. As far as events go, this spot is pretty solid. Sound system is great at blocking out excess noise on each side of the venue, and upstairs is its own animal with table service. Covers most nights it seems, but will have live performers. Drinks were pretty poor and server was obviously a little intoxicated. Ordered a few bourbons and cokes for about $12 each (club prices), but at least they were pretty strong. But again, I wouldn't trust an old fashioned or manhattan to be made with any expertise here so stick to hard liquor and maybe a Macro beer. Space has some stuff going for it like bowling, shuffle board, and darts in the middle section of the 3 floor venue, but overall just a live music venue downtown. Probably wouldn't go back unless I was looking to see a certain performer. read more

I like the new digs! Kabaret area is fantastic looking. The dance floor works like a dance floor should. The balconies are cozy, and fun for people watching. And the staff was pretty darn friendly and competent. However, I'll have to say, the blonde guy on the rooftop bar made the best manhattan in the joint. At some point, there was a man dipping shakers into wax for a Maker's Mark promo. Ours got bussed by some ambitious go-getter along with one round of our drinks. Fortunately, the bartender at the end of the night had one extra and gave it to us. I think it helped that I had an exceedingly lovely female accomplice. The only complaint I have is the house music. Having loud crappy "modern" music blaring in between sets of good ol jazz and swing hits just doesn't mix. And it was much louder than the live music levels. Kinda like when you're watching a TV show at a pleasant volume and then the annoying commercials come on twice as loud. My advice? Get some better commercials, y'all. read more

This place is awesome!!!! Honestly it's like 3 levels of awesome, all on top of itself. So much so that it's the first place I'm reviewing from my recent Austin trip for SXSW. There were bands playing on the 1st floor, but we were on the 2nd floor. There's a good view of the show going on downstairs, and a free bowling alley! I mean, it's two lanes. but how awesome is that!!!! After a bit of drinks we headed up to the top floor, the rooftop...for some outdoors St Pattys Day drinking. Man this place was fun. A lot of fun. A bar that was close by was charging people $15 to get in on St Pattys...yea RIGHT...to get into a bar? When every other bar in the hood was free, including this one...yea ok...good luck with that. I wish we could've checked out the whole bar but the inside floors were booked with a private party, which left us with the rooftop. The L O N G trek up those stairs gave me a nice workout, and once I caught my breath I took in the view of the beautiful ATX skyline and it was worth it! If you get there early you can snag a comfy couch/bed to sit on, otherwise there's plenty of room to stand and dance. Speaking of, I wish I took down that DJ's name because he ROCKED! He had the whole rooftop dancing to such a fun mix! Our waitress was attentive, she hooked us up with great service, and the shots are HUGE. That's a good thing :) The crowd was a good crowd, not tons of young college rowdy kids. A nice mix of 20 somethings and older. So if I told you that I spent part of Wednesday night lounging outside on the second floor, on a sofa, while drinking a beer and reading a romance novel - you might think I was a bit of a cool cat. If I told you I did all that at a bar on 4th street, you might want to know more. Speakeasy is really where its at. It's a really posh kind of bar, a late twenties, late thirties crowd, and people know how to have a good time. On Wednesday nights "The Brew," ( Austins most popular salsa band) plays to packed crowds so full they can barely dance, but no one really seems to mind. The upstairs deck is really where it's at. Covered with couches and pillows-- this is really the most romantic spot I have found in Austin. And although the drinks rarely have a special, and the wait staff is really insistent about getting you to order one of aforementioned drinks, and its hard to get a glass of water in the joint, I would really recommend Speakeasy to anyone. Great vibe, great music, some awesome people watching- and really- the deck- who can beat it. There is a 4 dollar cover on Wednesdays, but you can miss paying a cover if you come before 9. The reason I'm ranking this place so high is because I've only been on a couple random weeknights when there was live music, perfect weather, few people, and no cover. Picture yourself sipping a cocktail on a warm, breezy summer night, sitting on a comfy couch overlooking the city on a rooftop patio that feels like a cozy lounge. It is a great place to relax with a few friends or a date. Getting in was tricky though. You can see this place from the street but depending on the day, certain entrances can be closed off and you'll find yourself walking in a disgusting dumpster filled alley to get to the door! read more

This place was incredible, even on a slow Tuesday night. My girlfriend and I originally stopped in just to see the rooftop. It was closed, but josh the bartender was SO warm, helpful, and friendly, we had to stay to grab a few drinks. The drinks were awesome off the menu: I got the Austin 75 and my girlfriend got the Austin Mule plus a special Pimms cup concoction that Josh made custom that she loved. The live music by Carly Jo Jackson was great, she's so talented and lively, it really made the whole experience so memorable for both of us. Such a great night out in austin, I definitely recommend anyone in the area to stop by for a drink (or 4 like me lol). Okay, well first off I didn't get the 'full' experience since I was there for a fundraiser, but I'll tell you what I can. The venue is nicely located just far enough from 6th to be out of the mainline for parties, but close enough you're going to be able to find it. The front lounge is spacious and well lit with a nice raised seating area. The upstairs has nice room to mingle and it's own bar access, with a two lane bowling alley as well! Continuing upstairs you find the terrace with a really nice view, comfy outdoor seating, and again it's own bar access. Overall a super comfy and inviting atmosphere. Went here this past Saturday. We got there around 12am. We went up to the rooftop. OK amount of people. Expected it to be more packed. I liked the music on the rooftop and the bartender made the drinks STRONG AF! Which is nice. They were friendly too. The first two levels weren't very lively. Actually, there were barely any people there. This was my first time, so idk if that's normal for here. We weren't charged a cover, but my friends who got there an hour or so before us were charged. Even though it was $5/person, she said they made a deal of $20/6 people. I would indeed go back to this place. Hopefully it's more live next time though. read more

This place is horrible. I've never spent more money on bottle service and been so underwhelmed. We booked a bachelorette party with them and the bartender/cocktail waitress treated us horribly. $400 tab for one bottle of grey goose is absolute insanity. Their hospitality manager was very kind and tried to pick up the weight of his bartenders, but simply could not. As someone in the service industry, as someone who has worked bottle service for YEARS, I strongly recommend that you avoid this place. Underwhelming and utterly overpriced. Was here on a mini vacation with my wife and I am a cigar smoker and was excited to see that Speakeasy was having a Havana nights theme with cigars and whiskey. So, I attended and it was nothing as I expected. It was on the third floor terrace which I expected, but it was so crowded I couldn't move (that's fine, it's a big bar) and once I got to the bar I asked for a cigar four times and every time I was ignored. I also asked for a drink and was ignored again, I moved to a different part of the bar and was told to move to back of the line even though I had been waiting. I had enough and left, I will let everyone know my experience. I have been to very many cigar and whiskey bars and this was by far the worst. But of course it's nothing but a dance club, might as well keep it like that and quit advertising events like this. read more

My boyfriend and I recently visited Austin and decided to do the whole 6th street thing. After wandering aimlessly for a while, we decided that maybe that wasn't our kind of area. College me would have loved it, but now I just wanted somewhere I could sit down and have a beer. So, after deciding to venture elsewhere, we came across Speakeasy. There was a ten dollar cover per person which really sucked, but it ended up being worth it for the band and the seat. The band was called Space Rockers and they were great! They really entertained everyone with their stage presence and the songs they sang. I highly recommend them. Because the band is downstairs, we never ended up going upstairs, but I hear it's big and has great views. I was just happy that there was ample seating available. The crowd itself was probably early to late 30s. Maybe a little older than my boyfriend and I, but we just weren't feeling the 6th street vibe. I would certainly come here again if I were in the area. They had pretty standard drinks and I'm not sure about food. We were there so late that they would not have been serving anything. read more

I dropped by Speakeasy last night to see an old friend of mine who was in town for the night. I haven't been here before, but apparently the space has been renovated and is much larger than before. It's a very nice bar with a large stage and plenty of seating. It was a Thursday night, so the crowd was thin, but the music was great, service was good, and the beers weren't too expensive. I believe they charged $4.75 for a bottle of Shiner Bock...not bad. Overall, I was impressed. It seems like a great place to enjoy some music and hang out with friends. I will be back! read more
