I've been obsessed with this place for years. It was my jump off in college. I went a few years and didn't really visit often. I came here on a Saturday night. I only saw one bar tender who was great about checking on us and refilling our drinks and keeping up with what everyone was drinking. The bacon cheese fries weren't very good. The cheese was not melted very well and the fries didn't taste freshly cooked. Other than that we enjoyed our time here. read more

They also feature an upstairs and I'm my opinion that's the best part of the bar. I was very impressed by the bourbon selection, and the prices were fair. The bartender was very friendly as well. I gave this two stars because my husband has been there before and liked it. We went today for lunch and there are a lot of improvements that could be made. I ordered a Greek salad with chicken, big mistake. The salad was finely chopped to hide the brown romaine, and the chicken tasted like it was cooked days ago. Inedible. Bartender did not give a shit. The cheesesteak had no cheese. I understand that it's a Sunday lunch shift and it's probably not the a-team (or they closed there last night) but the meal was bad. Dirty bathrooms too, and considering that the place was pretty empty, it seems like they might not have been cleaned the night before. I've heard they have excellent wings, but I'm not going to be back to try them. We got the sesame chicken wings to start with - wow, the sauce was delicious the wings were crispy like chicken wings should be! The Greek salad I ordered with grilled chicken and the house balsamic was also delicious. Hubs got the Reuben and hot chips, the hot chips were great, crisp and not a single one was soggy! It was quiet when we walked in but after an hour people started coming in. The bar tender was so nice, friendly, and gave great recommendations. The food was SO good! Everything from the fried pickles, homemade ranch, wings (you didn't even have to ask for them to be cooked crispy!), Reuben, and French dip were cooked perfectly. Speakeasy Tavern is a long-standing establishment withing the long strip of shops flanking Battleground avenue before it splits off into Lawndale. It's a bit of a dive, and the name should not indicate to anyone that it is meant to be styled after some kind of old-timey speakeasy. It's very much a bar food and beer kind of place, and not where you would go for finely crafted cocktails. After finding the wait times for dinner to long at some nearby restaurants, our group settled on grabbing a more readily available bite here. Service was a bit lacking from the start, but for the most part it was tolerable. I ordered a reuben with fries, and around the table there were orders for fish tacos, chicken wraps and other similar bar fare. My reuben arrived, and while it was fine, it certainly isn't something I would get again. The meat was a bit chewy, the fat on it wasnt rendered very well. It made for a strange texture. I like that the fries are steak fries, so that was a plus. My friend that got the buffalo chicken wrap with pasta salad did not have good things to say about either part of it. The tuna tacos actually had a nice amount of seared tuna in them, so that person was happier. My 17 year old daughter and I stopped here for lunch back In August 2022. We are from out of town and we were looking for a place to eat that wasn't a chain and this place did not disappoint. We came here on a Wednesday afternoon as soon as it opened. The woman (I forgot her name) was behind the bar and waiting tables was so patient and kind with us. There was one other employee at work that day and he was the chef. He definitely made a mean Buffalo, ranch fried chicken sandwich. Both our food was great no complaints at all. There was not a lot of food ordering and our order took quite a while and when we got the wings they were too too salty to eat . We sent them back. The bartender acted as if she was used to sending back. The tacos came out and I had asked for pico on the side and it was not. Due to my food sensitivities we left. I've been to Speakeasy Tavern numerous times as it is pretty close to my home. I went again for lunch two days ago and this was the first time I've eaten here in awhile. I usually go in the evenings to hang out with friends. As I sat there, I realized this bar is really one-sided. Its a good casual hangout with a fun, energetic vibe during prime hours (i.e. nights/weekends) but it's kind of weak in terms of food and beer selections. Food: On my most recent visit, I ordered the pepperjack chicken wrap. It was probably the most bland lunch I've had in a very long time. The wrap consisted primarily of course-chopped iceberg lettuce, a few tomatoes and nearly flavorless chicken. The wrap wasn't even warm enough to melt the pepperjack cheese. I ended up picking out the chicken purely on principle and left the rest. I recalled that I've never been overly impressed with the food here. The rest of the menu is consistent with pub-fare: burgers, salads, etc but I can't personally recommend a particular item. Another disappointment is, that while they have a decent liquor selection, the beer choices are pretty soft. There are only 4 or 5 beers on draft and those consist of your American rice beers (Bud, Miller, Coors, etc). There a few higher quality beers available in bottle but I didn't see any selections for any of the micro's in the region. 2 stars for lack of flavor and imagination. Service: There were only about 5 other patrons there for lunch when I was there and the bartender had no problem handling our needs. She was polite but quiet with me but friendly and talkative to a pair of customers that must have been regulars. 3 stars for average service. Value: My super bland wrap was about $8 (as were most sandwiches and burgers) and my beers $3 for the import bottles on special that day. 3 stars (but I'm half tempted to just give 2 based on specials at other nearby bars). Atmosphere: This might the be highlight of Speakeasy; especially the cool outdoor patio in the back with its own bar and cornhole set. The interior is decorated in a clique-fun type of way. There are also a couple of TV's and Speakeasy is an unashamed Boston Red Sox bar. (I'm a big Yankees fan but I won't hold that against them!) 3 stars. Overall, I'll go back for a fun (hopefully) night with friends but I'll limit my expectations to that and not choose it if I'm looking to enjoy some casual bar food with a decent beer. You walk into this place any night of the week and the group of 4 or so tables right next to the entrance are always full. Large majority will be Page alumni, if that matters. Summertime is the season to go here- they've got an awesome back patio with cornhole, live music and another bar. Also, while the upstairs seating area is weirdly shaped, furnished, decorated and situated, it's a nice spot for a more chill experience within a crowded bar if that's what you find yourself looking for. Really, what bar has an upstairs lounge with a white board, photographs of Muhammad Ali, a Metro poster, and a TV airing basketball all in the same L shaped upstairs lounge? This one. But there's no beers on draft and it lacks enough indoor seating downstairs in all the action for most week nights :( read more

We really love this place because we are not often in the mood for fancy pretentious places. On Thursday nights you get wine bottles half off and you can take home what you don't drink which I do often! If you are trying to eat healthy the options are somewhat limited but you CAN find healthy choices along with a side of celery/carrots instead of fries :) I don't go for the food though I go for the laid back atmosphere and the friendly staff. The speakeasy used to be a place I felt comfortable in however recently, it's somewhat "Sketchy" at best. There is a new manager/bartender whom's following of friends are questionable. Having a friend that is associated with the Greensboro Police Department, he pointed out to me that there were numerous occasions they have been called to Speakeasy in the past few months. I have a friend that has reached out to the owner and she has yet to acknowledge him or his reaching out. I have reached out to her in the past and she never acknowledged me so I told him not to expect much. Food is EEHHHH but the management is even more MEEEHHHH.
