We spontaneously stopped in Palmer Lake for breakfast and a quick google search led us to Speed Trap. We arrived around 10:30am on a Saturday morning and were seated right away. I chose the build-your-own crepe option and it was so delicious, especially with the hollandaise sauce! There are so many other items I want to try on their menu. My God!! I have been here twice now and just had the best quiche, ever! I think I might be able to eat here every day, while house hunting! (Was here twice!) Hands down the best breakfast/ brunch is served here. The eggs benedict are also one of our faves. We love how the servers are attentive and kind, despite of the busy rush. It is a tiny establishment in Palmer Lake so you might not have much space to sit at, there is additional seating outside. I went to the Speed Trap this morning for breakfast (a Sunday) and decided to try their waffle breakfast which is only available on Sunday. Best waffle I've ever had. Made with blue corn and flax seed and topped with pecans. Accompanied by a bunch of fresh fruit. Definitely not your typical breakfast place with a nice reinterpretation of standard breakfast meals. The staff really hustles so the service is great. My only regret is I'll be out of town next Sunday so I'll have to wait for my next waffle! PS - not sure if the name Speed Trap has a double meaning, but suggest going the speed limit in Palmer Lake or your meal could cost a lot more than you planned. read more

Keep in mind that seating is limited due to the place being very cozy on the inside. The staff is always friendly and pleasant. The Avocado Toast with Poached Eggs is one of our favorites for breakfast. Their quiches make for a fabulous breakfast, brunch, or lunch. The salads are a bounty of fresh flavors and are well-portioned. Dinners can be pricey, but we like to swing in and split a Charcuterie plate (a meat and cheese plate that includes sausage, fresh fruit, and bread) with some wine for a light meal. The Painkiller and Espresso Latte (a delicious blend of Baileys & espresso) are our favorite after-dinner drinks. Don't miss the live music every Friday night. read more

Stopped in for coffee during a business trip. Ordered two drinks to go and while the drinks were just ok, the service was marginal. I found the coffee shop to be less than intuitive as far as locating cream, sugar, etc. I had to ask for a straw and lid on an iced drink to go, which should have been provided first without asking. BEST homemade chef created breakfasts in a 50 sq mi area. Small, very small, location in an ol 'days gone' by storefront in downtown Palmer Lake ~ but quaint and SO worth the wait. Perfect service and servers and spot on breakfast dishes ~ we drive 20 mi from Castle Rock after church ~ and enjoy every yummy bite. read more

The speed trap sandwich is excellent! Croissants are decadent but the way this was prepared, it was over the top! I ordered fresh fruit, which was excellent. This place is a small, out of the way "diner" with live music at times (Fri and Sat nights I believe). It has excellent fresh food. The French toast is outstanding, the eggs benedict crepes are excellent, and for those with gluten allergies, they are very accommodating and can serve numerous dishes gluten free. Maybe if you eat in it might be better, but I drove down during the virus and thought getting there early would be the thing to do as I read on a local facebook page telling about all the places that have take out that this place had great caramel pecan rolls. Well, they had none. Against my better judgement I bought what they had which was cinnamon rolls. Fair. Wrapped in plastic, so when I took off the plastic the frosting lost a lot. All I can say is if you want something in particular call first. I asked about the rolls and the guy said "welllllll, we are going to make some later". Well, I drove 15 min. at 8:00 AM to get some. I stopped here while visiting my aunt in Monument. I had a great chai latte - it was huge and delicious and cost a lot less than the same item at somewhere like Starbucks. My aunt likes the shop because the staff is always friendly, and the owner's dog, Millie, is adorable. I really liked the feel of this place. Palmer Lake, right outside of Colorado Springs, is a beautiful very small town that is filled with some excellent restaurants and has an amazing little Bistro called Speedtrap. It is a cozy space (close quarters for sure) with about 12 small tables, a little patio out front (dog friendly and they always brings our pups water) and a beautiful wood horseshoe shaped bar. On our two visits we walked right in but this little place can get busy quickly on the weekends but trust me, it is worth the wait! ​​ On our first visit we went before taking the dogs for a hike at Mt. Herman. We sat at the bar and ordered two spicy bloody mary's. I will just say that the Speedtrap's bloody mary's rank right up there with the best in the Springs! We asked for extra spicy and they delivered. They had a good heat, but won't make you cry, and you can see the horseradish, spices and black pepper in your glass. The celery salt rim was delicious and the garnishes were wonderful too. The addition of the caper berries was a nice surprise as I think they go great with bloody marys with their nice pop and salty flavor. ​​ The Breakfast menu at the Speedtrap is different than anything else we have found in the Springs as many things have a different spin on the classics. I had raved to my friend about their Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict ($11.50) so of course we both had the same thing. What really makes this dish different is that the Eggs Benedict is not on your traditional English Muffin but instead comes on top of homemade crepes. The crepe batter here is light with a little crispy edge and just a touch of sweetness for a wonderful sweet and savory combination. Top that with the saltiness of the smoked salmon, 2 perfectly cooked poached eggs, fresh asparagus and a light hollandaise sauce that has the perfect amount of lemon and you are in for a taste explosion! Oh, those potatoes that come with this! Layers upon layers of thinly sliced potatoes with cheddar cheese and then perfectly seasoned with salt and pepper. The best part is the brown, crispy edges of crunchy, hot cheese...heaven. The nice thing here before you hike, bike or do SUP on Palmer Lake is that you are full but not stuffed. ​​ The Speedtrap has a full coffee bar as well with lattes, mocha's, teas, cappuccinos, espresso and of course freshly ground regular coffee blended for the Speedtrap. I personally love the macadamia nut, the chocolate covered cherry and the MochaCavanha which is mocha with caramel, vanilla and hazelnut. As a coffee lover the baristas here get top marks! ​​ On our next visit we went on a Saturday. It was busy but there were still a few tables and a couple of spots at the bar. I think this was the first time I ever had something other than the Salmon Benedict but boy am I glad I did! My first choice was the biscuits and gravy but it was about noon and they were already out...next time I am going earlier! I decided on the BLT with egg ($7.95) which comes with fresh fruit and I ordered a side of those delicious cheddar potatoes. WOW...I knew this placed baked their own bread and I am usually more of a filling person than a bread person but this bread was absolutely killer. Probably some of the lightest, melt in your mouth bread I have ever eaten (and that says a lot coming from California!). Although it was light it held up perfectly with the crispy bacon, baby lettuce, red and yellow tomatoes and runny fried egg. A perfect brunch sandwich. We also tried the Scramble ($8.95) which includes 2 eggs, your choice of 3 fillings and a choice of cheese, cheddar potatoes and that wonderful fresh bread. The apple-wood smoked bacon was crispy and salty as good bacon should be, fresh spinach and cherry tomatoes with the nutty and wonderfully melting Gruyere cheese. Next time we will ask for an extra egg or two though for the hungry man! Service is always very friendly and reminds me of walking into a friends house for breakfast or drinks. The wait staff supports each other and is attentive without being on top of you, hard to do in such a small space. They are knowledgeable about the menu and have always answered any questions we have had right off the bat. Not sure where any of the complaints are coming from. I guess other than the cyclist that thinks his friends (must not have many with how busy it was) should all boycott the place. He must have tried to order the moons over my hammy thinking it was a Denny's. Had breakfast there this morning with my wife and left extremely happy. We were offered refills on coffee by just about every waitress working. The food was awesome and service was better. I guess if you don't like the laid back atmosphere and supporting local businesses you won't like it here. My recommendation in that case would be a visit to your local IHOP. Preferably on kids eat free night. I'll take the Speedtrap instead. read more

I had a mint something latte and a croissant with eggs, cheddar, and bacon. The coffee was a beautiful cup of yum. The croissant was pretty typical, except the bacon was thick. The place is really cool on the inside, but boy was it tight. That's the only reason for four instead of five stars. The staff was so friendly. I would definitely recommend and come here again. As a recently relocated locavore to the area I was very pleased to find the Speed Trap. This place is an excellent destination to stray off the heavily trodden path with your Harley, Ferrari, Hyundai, mountain bike, or best pair of running shoes. The food is excellent, as is the locally roasted Serrano's espresso that they skillfully extract from their espresso machine. On top of the artfully crafted food and drinks, I was here the day that the health department dropped in for an impromptu inspection and the Speed Trap passed with flying colors. So not only is the food tasty, but the kitchen is clean on top of that. read more

It's good. I have visited a fair number of times, as it's on my way to somewhere else. Food is normally OK. Same with the beverages. I have never gotten anything that was inedible. I have gotten some less than fresh pastry. There is a very dedicated local following, who are in my opinion more attracted by the location and funky hipster/60's CO vibe than the products, but I concede atmosphere and feel also are important. If this business might appeal to you on that basis, go for it. Parking is on the main drag/street and a bit limited. I prefer Serrano's in Monument for the coffee and the food, but it's not always as convenient, and that's me. This place apparently also uses coffee roasted by Serrano's but they seem to be brewing it differently. read more

Well, that was terrible. As a place we used to love, we fear can no longer recommend it. I'm not sure I've had such a negative experience plus bad food combination. We arrived, ordered drinks, and decided to order the Steak Frites. In the past, we have had a small but lovely steak, cooked to order. This time our medium rare arrived purple (rare-raw). Not a problem, asked that they cook it more to med rare. When it took a VERY long time to come back (with only one other person in the restaurant), I started to worry. Sure enough, it came back medium-well... no pink at all. Then the cook came out and talked with our server away from our table, but well within earshot... he complained we were crazy and it was perfectly medium... except it still wasn't (again, no pink at all) AND we ordered med rare AND if it was medium, why did you make it purple the first time? Our server offered to cook a new steak, but both of us realized that: 1. they couldn't get close to what we ordered, the first two times, why would ruining another piece help? 2. the quality of the steak was terrible. My partner called it "Walmart meat." Instead of being a nice sliced steak, this was simply an abysmal bone-in something that was overcooked and near inedible. We gave it to the dog. Despite us clearly not eating any of it, the next question from our server was to ask if we wanted dessert or more wine (not, "can we make it up to you?" Just "can we get you to buy more things?") So, aloha Speed Trap, there's too many other great restaurants in Palmer Lake to waste more time with you and your horrifically rude (and incompetent) cook. read more
