1 Star - Avoid at all costs…read more If I could give negative stars, I would. I visited the Take 5 Oil Change on University Parkway in Winston-Salem (Store #1036). Little did I know a simple oil change would turn into a months-long disaster that ultimately destroyed my car's timing chain and is resulting in needing a new engine -- all because they couldn't be bothered to properly reinstall the oil plug. As a result of their negligence, my vehicle slowly leaked oil without my knowledge, eventually running completely dry and causing significant internal damage. And the best part? They're refusing to take any responsibility. The store manager, DJ, conveniently became unreachable -- always "on break" at 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 3pm and after 5pm, and never returning calls, despite being told multiple times my name and number were on her desk. Coincidentally, I was able to get her on the phone calling at 8am and *67-ing my call. When I finally got a call back from the district manager, Anthony Reber, I was met with rudeness, condescension, and interruptions every time I tried to speak. I was repeatedly told I "need to listen" and "need to understand" -- as if being spoken over and gaslit was somehow helpful customer service. Apparently I can take my car to a full service mechanic shop but it can't be the mechanic shop I want because they're competitors (which seemed to have slipped out), despite the full service shop of my choosing having actual mechanics who are ASE certified. Although legally, I can take my car wherever I want, but it seems it was an issue it wasn't somewhere like Pep Boys that's over an hour and a half drive on a car that I can't drive. When I asked for the contact info of his superior, he claimed there was no one above him. Interesting -- I must have missed the memo that he owns the whole company. This was hands-down the most unprofessional customer service I've ever experienced. If you value your time, your vehicle, and basic human decency, do yourself a favor and steer clear of this location -- or Take 5 altogether. They sure know how to take... but not how to give anything back. Take 5 promotes caring about their veterans but ruin their cars and refuse to help past that. Please note, the technicians are just that- NOT actual mechanics.

The cramped location of the starter kept me from doing the ol' hammer trick to get it going long enough to get home, so I called our auto insurance company who promptly sent a tow truck. Having done business with Parrish Tire a decade ago before we moved away, there was no question where I was having our car taken for the starter. I called the Summit Square location and was told they could get to it first thing the next morning. I rode in with the tow driver and then met with the counter staff at Parrish to do all the paperwork. They offered me a loaner car, but then realized it was already promised to another customer. Not a problem as I had already reserved a rental. The starter was replaced the next morning, and the car was available for pickup before lunch. Parrish continues to be my go-to place for automotive service.

Not only was Shattalon Tire & Automotive's price 1/2 than what their so-called competitors were asking for, the mechanics Robert, Derek & T.J. were pleasant to communicate with before, during and after my appointment. After being told it would be best to make an appointment the next morning due to the fact that they were short-staffed the day before, I arrived the following day around 11:00 AM & was driving my SUV back off of their lot at 12:30 PM! While I waited 90-minutes for my oil change to be complete, I enjoyed sitting, watching TV and conversing with other customers within their air-conditioned waiting area where hot, fresh, complimentary coffee is offered. Even their unisex bathroom was kept sparkling and well-stocked with sanitizing hand soap and rolls of toilet paper. After my car's oil was changed, mechanic Robert happily gave me a list of rates for things I may need done in the future (such as wheel alignment & rotations, timer & serpentine belt replacements, brakes replacements, etc.), which I greatly appreciated since MOST other mechanics throughout Winston-Salem will often reply to such inquiries with the typical and foolish comment: "we can't really say what it'll cost until we see your car!"
