Ignore all of the bad reviews--these guys came to my neighborhood for free to help me get to their shop after my brakes went out! They had my car back to me same day, and everyone there was hilarious and knowledgable. The truth of the matter is that these guys do a thankless job, so remember that when you see bad reviews. As for me, I'll be going back with all of my brake issues in the future. The only reason they lose a star for me is because the youngest guy who works there made a joke to me about women ruining cars--not the best choice when you're dealing with female customers. ;) read more

This is an update for my review. I spoke to the owner George. He was concerned about my recent service and strives to make his customers happy. We both agreed there was miscommunication on what services were done. He has spoken to the mechanic who ate in my car, he knows customers don't make things up in regards to what had happened in their cars and that as a car owner we are more perceptive of what our cars do and do not smell like. George has offered to do the service on my car, but I have already taken it to the dealer who charged me less than the quote I received. I may however take him up on his offer to smog my other car. read more

I had my oil changed at a nationwide chain (I won't name names) and they decimated my car. Snapped the oil filter off and broke the housing that attached the filter to the engine. What should have been a 30 min oil change turned into a debacle with my truck spewing oil everywhere and needing to be towed to a mechanic for repair. They referred me to Joey at Speedy Tune & Brake in Encinitas. Joey took care of everything, replaced all the parts, changed out the oil and dealt directly with the chain to make sure they covered all costs of the repair. Can't give enough praise to Joey and the team at Speedy Tune, stand up folks and my new go to for mechanical needs. Came to this place after it was recommended to me by a family friend. I came in for an oil chance and called the shop in advance to verify that it would cost me $30 after all the "hidden fees". I arrived at the shop and one of the workers started bullshitting me right away that there was going to be a lot wrong with my car. I told him all I wanted was an oil change so that I could be on my way. As they were changing the oil one of the main employees told me he had smelled gas leaking from my car, I didn't smell it and neither did his mechanic. So after it took them quite a while to change my oil, he brought me in to pay and promptly charged me $50. I was quite upset that I had been lied to over the phone for business. After the guy checked the notes the mechanic wrote on my car, and discovered nothing was wrong, he asked the mechanic "what about that gas leak?" the mechanic replied "theres nothing wrong with that car". The cashier then threw my credit card at me and gave me my receipt. Following that, the cashier pretty much drove me out of the door and I left. Overall, I would not tell anyone to go to this shop, the employees are stupid, the service sucks. Such a shame to see a shop like this in such a nice area of town. read more

Love these guys! I started my day off with a scare on the road when my steering wheel locked up. The AAA serviceman took my car to Speedy and they were quick, friendly and understanding as we worked together to resolve the issues my car was having. It's never fun to have something go wrong with your car, but Joey and George made the process smooth. I agree with the one star posts. The five stars must be posted by insiders. Basically the operation is all about upsell and poor customer service. They sold me brakes I didn't need, but to make it worse, I kept telling the manager I had to leave by a certain time. He kept telling me "you'll be fine", but never did anything to speed up the work. Guys -charging hundreds of dollars for unnecessary repairs is bad enough, but don't play the customer like a fool that blatantly. Save your money and go someplace else. read more

I never do these Yelp things but I decided it was a good reason to start. Took my car in for a small vibration and after they jacked the car up they said it needed this or that. I am ok with that. Instead of a $100 fix it turned out to be a $1100 almost fix. Hey..it is a car and they need TLC. Again...ok with it. They said replacing all brake pads and calipers. Also going to turn all rotors. They fix it and I drive it home. Feels good. Look at next day and back two rotors were NOT turned. Rust on them still. A day later I bring it in and Mark the service guy looks at me and says they did it....he even went out and looked at it. I take it to a mechanic in OB and he jacked car up for free and showed me they did not do it. On top of it he showed me that the brake pads were not even on the rotor correctly. Took it back and told them to fix it. Ironically when I got the car back the rotors were nice and shiny and turned as they should have been since I was charged for it. I read the reviews before going here and thought all was good. NOT in my case. I would never go there again. read more

Well where do I start. I was completely harassed the whole time by a guy who seemed like the owner but I really hope its not. The guy was an older man with grayish hair and a mustache. I was in a hurry to go out of town that day and all I needed was an oil change, of course they end up conning me into spending more $ on a new oil filter because it was "necessary" but it really wasn't. The guy with the mustache wouldn't stop talking to me/hitting on me/ harassing me the whole 2 hours I had to wait. I finally left to go across the street for a coffee and came back and asked if my truck was done. He said "well how bad do u wanna leave?" He knew I was in a rush to drive up north and was doing it on purpose. I will never go back here and I hope no one else does either. read more

Family owned business behind jiffy lube. I so happen to get a flat tire in front of this shop and so I was destined to come here (I think). George, Joey and the mechanic were attentive and pleasant. I ended up buying all four tires from here for a good price, I didn't feel I was being up sold on a bunch of other jazz and I appreciate that. I know they have some bad reviews but I couldn't agree with them. I would definitely go back, I feel my loyalty would be appreciated as well. I say if your in the area, give them a chance. read more

Another shop told me my air cleaner filter was new when I asked it be replaced at the normal manual mileage. I looked through my car records. And after examining my records, I now know that when I went in for a 60k mile service they likely did some unnecessary work. They replaced the engine air cleaner (air filter), which should not be done until 90k miles and they flushed my transmission fluid which shouldn't be done till 100k miles. This is based on my car maintenance manual. They did this under the guise of a 60k service, then added stuff normal for a 90/100k service. Just another mechanic trying to make a buck on unknowing car owners. read more

I went in for a alignment ( one of the few things I don't have the equipment for) After two hours I was told I needed two cam bolts-fine. After four hours (for a alignment) I was told the two bolts and time would be 150 dollars plus 100 for the alignment. I just changed most of the suspension components thus the need for an alignment but also no excuse for any problems in installing two cam bolts. Shortly after this I got new tires and given the service I got I decided to get another alignment at another shop and no surprise the alignment was way off. This place gives good mechanics a bad name. read more

1. When I first arrived with my vehicle, I witnessed the technician arguing with the manager. When I returned to pick up my vehcile, I walked in and the manager was laying on the floor doing stretches. Seriously. 2. As I'm paying, the manager tells me that the computer in my car is bad and that it could go any time and the car will be inoperable. I wished he had explained it to me like that BEFORE he let me authorize repairs for $1300. :-/ I may have chosen to donate the vehicle instead of repairing it. 3. Normally, I would have removed all personal belongings from the vehicle, but it was towed in as an emergency and there were some things left in the back seat. When I retrieved the car, the items had been piled into the rearview window area. I'm still trying to figure out why they would have needed to be in the back seat and touch my stuff in order to perform brake service. Overall, they were just expensive and obnoxious. read more

When I left the house that morning, I thought I was going to get an oil change, wanting them to top off my brake fluid after the light had flashed on. Well Jiffy Lube told me to go talk to George and 30 minutes later I found out that I needed major brake repair done. I went in with my '05 Tundra and said it was pulling to one side and thought I needed an alignment (I'd been hitting curbs now and then), before I could even get out of the truck the guy told me it was likely worn tires and (at the time) a truck only a few years old wouldn't be the alignment. I left without him making a dime. I've had 2 cars smog'd there since, no issues. I see lots of negative responses to this place, hope yours is as good as mine was. read more

Great service! Towex (AAA) referred me to Speedy Tune and Brake since the shop was a close tow. My car suffered a bad starter. Joey was very helpful and friendly. My car was fixed in a couple hours. Joey also brought to my attention other minor things that needed to be done, oil change, but was not pushy about it. They also made some adjustments to the radiator hose and topped off the fluid at no cost. It's important to me to go above and beyond to look out for customers Price for the starter work was comparable to other shops. I'm very happy with my experience at Speedy Tune and Brake. I am shocked at all the bad reviews but maybe the staff has changed. I had a problem with my Yukon and took it to the dealer. They quoted me $4,000 for a bunch of repairs that sounded fishy. I took to Speedy for a 2nd opinion because they had done some work for me in the past. They found that half of the dealer recommendations were nonsense. On the other hand they verified that some of the work required was absolutely necessary and they found another issue that was very serious and should be addressed. They allowed me into the service bay to show me all the work that should be done and why it was needed. They quoted me prices at less than half of what the dealer was trying to charge me. One of the things they found was some major work that I needed on the front end that any mechanic should have noticed during a routine inspection. My car drive like new and I save a ton of money. I would recommend this place to anyone. read more

I've been taking my cars here for years. Joey and George are honest and do good work in the most cost efficient way possible. They keep my old Dodge Ram diesel tow vehicle safe and sound and always give me options on what is an urgent repair versus what's "nice to have." I called them on a Saturday off of the Grapevine when I had brake issues while towing my trailer and Joey walked me through what to check over the phone and made the situation much less stressful. As a woman, I find it particularly difficult to find an auto mechanic whom I can trust to be straight up, fair, and take care of my car like he might his brother's and to communicate with me in the same way - and not charge an arm and a leg. These must be incredibly high standards in this industry because for the past decade I've had zero luck in finding a mechanic even remotely comparable to the steadfast and honest one I grew up with in Iowa. Referral after referral, yelp after yelp search, car issue after car issue....I gave up on the chance that I ever would. Until I came across Speedy Tune & Brake by sheer luck yesterday. I've never been so happy to have my car overheat. Never thought I'd say that, either. I am incredibly relieved to say that (by accident) I finally found the kind of auto service, customer service, knowledge and reliability I've been looking for - for a very LONG time. Let me just say that I know from ample experience that any other body shop would have charged me way more than I could afford, and not provided nearly the amount of knowledge, time, and assistance that I was provided with from George, the owner himself. He went beyond even my expectations. And they didn't charge me a dime. These guys know what they're talking about, they're more than fair, AND they know how to talk to people as people and not a sale (or as an auto-ignorant woman, for that matter. Regardless if I know what is going on or not, nobody wants to be treated in a way to feel like you are below them, and let's be honest, almost every mechanic usually does, even (especially) when they're trying not to. For the first time in years, these guys never once made me feel below them in any way shape or form. For what it's worth, this is the first review I've ever written. So I recently bought a 1996 cougar that recently needed to be smogged right away and joey got me in immediately. I was treated with excellent customer service and very fast service..(it was raining and joey went in the rain to hold a tarp so my old car could be smogged on the dyno wheels in the floor). So I have to be honest here and tell you I am a manager of a local oil change shop but we dont smog or do MAJOR repairs... O Stars. After effusive lies about things that even toddlers dont need to lie about, and breaking cast iron parts on my car due to incompetence, I had to demand the return of my car from the shop. I took it to a nearby place and the problem was fixed promptly for 6% of the price of 'speedy'. The way the manager treated employees made me think I was in a repressed caste system country far away. And the natural, automatic, and perpetual inclination to lie mustve been a cultural proclivity. Pretty scary stuff. read more

Went there to get an oil change, replace fuse on heated seats, engine light diagnosis. When i got there they were pretty polite, told me the wait would be a while and recommended i go home and they would call me letting me know what, if anything was wrong. An hour or so later the manager whom i talked, to called me to tell me my back breaks needed replacing, there was a leak of some kind (not specified), the clutch needed replacing, said they had diagnosed the problem of the engine light (didnt specify),and that a headlight was out (it wasnt). The quote was $2,300. As i dont have that kind of money i wanted a second opinion. Since they had already started on the breaks i allowed them to finish but said not to do anything else. They went ahead and changed my oil and headlight, though i insisted to ONLY DO THE BRAKES. When I got there to pick up my car they questioned why i wanted to leave. When i said i wanted to go to a shop i felt was more reputable, he challenged that they would not ofer his "special discounted" offer price. Then he went on to tell me they knew the engine light problem and it wasnt what showed up on the code, but they wouldnt tell me what the problem was since i was leaving AND he was certain the other shop would misdiagnose the issue. When i told him i was going to a subaru (thats the make of my car) specialty shop, he said HE was a subaru specialist, which i know to be untrue. Upon 30 point inspection from the subaru specialty shop we came to realise they didnt put full synthetic oil in my car, which it NEEDS as it over 100,000 miles. So much for subaru specialist. There was nothing wrong with my clutch, and no leaks to be found. total cost for repair of banjo bolts, water pump, belts etc $860. DO NOT BE CONNED. They will attempt to charge you for things that ARE NOT BROKEN, and not tell you the true problems. read more

Avoid this place!!! I just went to this shop for a smog check. After waiting for AN HOUR, I finally asked the man who seemed to be the manager if my car was almost done. He came back and told me their equipment wasn't working and they couldn't communicate with my car. Equipment malfunctions are understandable, but to leave a customer waiting that long for such a simple service with no updates? Absolutely ridiculous. Can't believe I took an hour off of work to do this, and now I have to go find another shop tomorrow. read more

So happy with this business. My alternator died 9 months. My AAA tow service brought my car to Speedy. They provided a quick and reasonable repair. Unfortunately, the alternator started having serious problems a few days ago. Despite the repair being out of warranty (due to the high mileage I put on my "mom limousine"), the kindly owner and his son replaced the alternator for me at no charge. If this is under the same ownership as Speedy Tune on Miramar Road DO NOT GO HERE. The last time I took my car they replaced a part which did not need to be replaced (which was verified by the dealership) and charged me for it. When I asked them to put the old part back in, they said they would charge me $400 *more* if I made them take the part out. Not to mention they didn't fix my car, and asked me to tow it else where. I did a chargeback with my credit card company - so all is well.. But AVOID THIS PLACE. They are rude and dishonest. read more
