Friendly group, some more talkative than others. We went to an "open house" for the public. There…read morewere train displays on the first floor that were not running, but no one around to speak with about them. Lots of people were busy setting up for a fund raiser dinner. But the real action was going on downstairs anyway. Once we went down stairs we were greeted and shown around the running displays. Very impressed with the obvious skill and dedication of the model builders. I'm more into the "toy train" look rather than realism, but even so it was VERY impressive. We were told if we become members we can take operator lessons and then are allowed to bring your own trains in and run them on the clubs model lines. That sounds like a lot of fun! One important thing: GFMRC has several different scale models to run your trains on, though the focus is definitely on HO. I saw only one elaborate set-up for O scale "three railers" which is my preferred size.

The selection is not great. Everything they sell can be found for better prices at half a dozen different places in the area aswell as online. I truly believe they should go out of business. Its been an experience watching them grow and get more products to be able to bring a better selection to the community for more gamers to find a home. Working at a place like this might just be my dream job--tabletop and card games are some of my…read morefavorite things and each time that I go inside this store I feel like I've walked into a treasure trove filled with hidden gems of games that I might not find other places. Now, I rationally know that I can go on Amazon to find many of the games in this store... but you can hold them here. And look at them here. I think that makes all the difference. Not to mention that you can ask the opinion of the people working there on different games and they might be able to introduce you to something new that you might not have looked at before. (That kind of happened when I went in, I was looking for something specific and when they didn't have it I was shown around the wonder-room of other options and... well, let's just say that I spent much more than I thought that I was going to.) I've heard that there is a fun upstairs where kids can come and play games and hang out. I'm, unfortunately, too old for that and I don't live in Maine anymore... but--I think that is an amazing idea. I'm telling you, this store might be where my dream job lay.
