You would think the inside would smell of an abundance of teas and spices, but that prominent to me. I was interested in the electric tea kettle for my mother. They have a pinky up and a utilitea brand and that's it. I asked how much the two tea kettle brands are. The Pinky Up Electric tea kettle is $79.99, it's $49.99 on Amazon. :( The Utilitea electric kettle is $99.99, couldn't find this one on Amazon, there are similar ones for under $40, stainless steel. It'd be nice if you could maybe try out some tease, not saying I need to smell or taste every one of them, but my husband ended up bringing down some of the jars so I could smell them myself. Large assortment of fine tea's and spices are stocked at this spice/tea centric store . For my first visit here, I ended up getting a White Champagne Raspberry tea that has beautiful floral and Raspberry notes with a hint of Honey. It's a delicious tea that I am enjoying as I write this review. Relative to staff, the folks working at this business are quite friendly and very knowledgeable about their teas and and are there to help guide you in selecting a tea based on your personal tastes. You are allowed to open the large tea jars to sniff which is a great assistance in helping you make a selection where my nose was my guide in selecting my tea along with the staff's input. Nice! My only gripe about this business is there are no ready made samples to taste like you find in other shops like this and/or the ability to order a hot tea of your choice to try. I really find that tea shops that offer this definitely help you avoid getting a tea you are unhappy with once you get home and make your first pot. Having said that, this shop is an excellent spot to get fine tea and should not be missed if good tea and spices are your thing. read more

This store looks beautiful. The loose leaf teas and tisanes look very fresh, and the collection of bitters, oils, and seasonings were impressive. I almost bought a few tea blends and bitters, despite the higher than average prices. But, neither of the women working were willing to give me even a glance as I shopped. I was the only customer in the store and their behavior made it clear that they'd rather not have anyone there at all. They talked to each other about another employee that neither woman seemed to like. They disappeared into the back room, and the stood around awkwardly avoiding me as much as possible. If there had been anything in stock that stood out as exceptional or hard to find, I might have pushed through their rudeness. But it wasn't worth the effort. read more

You know that this is a pretty special store when I save it for last on a recent informal tour I was giving of downtown Northville. I've been in more than a few times and have enjoyed wandering through, browsing the shelves of branded and bulk teas, jars and jars of spices, and stainless steel containers of flavored vinegars and infused olive oils. I don't know who was more delighted by the store, me or my friend, a talented home chef. My friend was examining the tall shelves of tea towards the front of the store, while I was taking in all the spices. My family fully understands this about me: my definition of adulthood is a fully-stocked spice rack. I received a treasured one from my sister one year and my sister-in-law gifted me with a box of spices this past Christmas. Despite this, I am still looking for flavorings to enhance my recent bout of home cooking. I picked up a few packets of spices, some mini bottles of olive oil (lavender and Persian lime), and vinegars (apple and watermelon/strawberry). Unfortunately but understandably, tastings weren't available due to COVID. The hops and honey rub was okay on the pork loin that I made a few nights ago. I preferred the walnut basil pesto, however. My friend enjoyed the lemony gunpowder tea she had purchased. I'm looking forward to movie night this weekend to try a new popcorn seasoning from this visit. And I plan to make bread this weekend to enjoy the olive oils and vinegars I just purchased. Service was exemplary. read more

Had a very odd experience here...won't give this location business again. The girl working there was miserable and not friendly at all! My BF accidentally dropped a bottle of some sauce and when we were checking out (the bill was $100+ BTW) she asked "would you mind paying for this?", I'm all for supporting local businesses but when the service is not good to begin with and you don't even explain that we would have to pay for it was just weird and awkward! It's not even about the money...it's about the level of service and lack of communication. I worked retail many years and never once asked someone to pay for something that accidentally broke. We would rather give our business to other locations with better service because we do love their products. read more

While ambling around Northville, I spied this little shop from the corner of my eye. I persuaded my crew that the shop required investigation, so in we went. Spice Merchants is essentially a petite Penzey's. We enjoyed opening the various spice containers and inhaling the fragrances. Two of us were a little too enthusiastic in our enjoyment of the scent of one of the chili mixes and ended up with watery eyes and itchy noses. In any case, we left with three French jars of spice blends (the jars, we were told, are actually made in France). We concluded that the prices for the pure herbs and spices were a bit out of line but that we could justify paying a premium for a unique blend. All three (Berbere, Tuscan and Moroccan) were immediately pressed into service, and all three proved to be supremely delicious additions to our spice pantry. I like having a spice store that sells whole spices right in my backyard. They sell a range of loose leaf tea and lots of whole and ground spices. I love the tea section because I love Chai so much I'm always trying to find the perfect blend. I took a shot and bought an oz of loose leaf Marsala Chai for $4.99. Not a bad price considering I've already gotten 6 cups out of it and I've hardly enough touched the stuff. I know, you're probably thinking "this guy makes some weak tea". WRONG! The tea itself has a wonderfully complex aroma and taste. Will definitely go back and grab a larger size next time. -----------Now my 2 cents on tea Stop reading here if you're only interest is the store. The big manufacturers that produce teas(Lipton, Tazo, etc) don't realize whole leaf tea has a better, more complex flavor and taste than ground up whatever. I recently took an interest in teas when Starbucks Tazo brand loose leaf Chai changed to this ground up stuff in a paper filter. It's like a completely different drink. The only difference I could see between the new and old Chai recipe is "Natural Flavorings". After a bit of internet research I found that the ingredient missing is Castoreum. That's right a cheap sweet vanilla flavoring substitute derived from a Beaver's anal glands. Since I guess it comes from nature they can call it a natural flavoring. YUUMMMMYY! Anyway, the ingredients listed on the bag are all spice and no natural or artificial flavorings. I don't know if they deal in fair trade, GMO's, or anything of that nature but I'll take my tea without Beaver butt thank you. Spice Merchants is a terrific new addition to the downtown Northville shopping scene. It is a well stocked store, chock full of inspiration for all you chefs out there. Reclaimed wood flooring on the walls adds a cool look to the place. Tons of spices to choose from. At least ten kinds of salts, plenty of peppers and every other single spice you can imagine. Move onto the spice blend section and start dreaming. Then carry on to the tea room and enjoy the terrific aromas. I bought five packets, each about 1 ounce size. Been buying tea for a long long time here and spices. Other than the young lady that works on the weekend customer service and professionalism is definitely lacking in the two older women. Owner was very pleasant unfortunately I bought tea that could not be used for making chia I was told it could be. I got no further than the parking lot and was told no refund and no other options.
