Spice Rack on Knights Road, Bensalem, PA, is in a strip shopping center I had never visited before, called Bensalem Square. It is a small house with about a dozen tables, and courteous, efficient service and a rapid response kitchen. Our order of a chaat appetizer (Sev Puri), spinach soup (Palak), chilli chicken and cheese curry (Mughlai Sahi Paneer), with garlic naan, arrived on time and as ordered. Each had its strength and weaknesses, but overall was a good meal. The chaat was their take on traditional Indian street snacks, with a crisp cracker base, ground veggies and spiced crispies on top. Very good and fun to eat. The spinach soup was sort of a flat dark green broth with interesting flavor, but little body. I bit of cream would likely have really brought it to life. The chilli chicken (dry) was okay, but although said to be dry, was still fairly moist in a heavy goopy sauce. I have had this in several other Indo/Chinese fusion joints, where the chicken had a drier coated finish and a better texture/flavor profile. The paneer dish was rich and flavorful, and was the star of the show. We asked for it moderately spicy, and thought it hit the mark. Finally, the garlic naan was very good. Thinner and crisper than most I had eaten before. The mango lassi was a thick smoothie with crumbled cashews on top. A tad expensive, but a delicious suck. Spice Rack is pretty far out of my way, so it is unlikely I will return. There are many better and more consistent Indian kitchens in and around Bucks County, so unless your in the hood, there are plenty of other choices. Hidden? Yes. Gem? Not really. read more

This has become our favorite Indian place, especially for the convenient take-out. We stumbled upon this place unexpectedly, and decided to give it a try, as our favorite local place closed some time ago. The menu presents a fusion of Central Asian cuisines, but what a result! On our first dine-in, we started off with the onion kulcha, veggie samosas and pakoras for appetizers. Then we ordered wings (!!), lamb kebob, chana masala, bhindi masala and keema naan. No, we are not gluttons: we wanted to get a well-rounded understanding of the cooking and flavors of this restaurant. Samosas were fresh and moist, pakoras were nice and flavorful, and kulcha was perfect. The wings were flavored with an unexpected yet excellent combination of Eastern spices, which worked so well on the chicken - something definitely different but absolutely delicious. The lamb kebob was firm but not dry, the balance of flavors was flawless and the meat was cooked to perfection. Both masalas exuded an abundance of spices and seasonings which pleased our finicky palates and tastes. Keema naan was made with chicken - which appeared to be previously cooked, sliced and stuffed into the bread, then cooked; so the meat was dry. Knowing what a freshly and properly made keema naan tastes like, we mentioned to the server and then the chef our opinions. They quickly whipped another order for us, made FRESH and oh-so-amazing!! After living across the street from this place for almost a year, we finally gathered up the courage to try something new before we move, and we are glad that we did. The place is small, so I wouldn't recommend coming with a group of 4+. We came in around 8, so there were only a few people. We ordered the lamb tikka masala and the bainghan ka bharta, and some naan. Everything was delicious! My husband ordered the lamb tikka masala medium, and it had just the right amount of spice. My bainghan ka bharta was great, it was a large portion. And the naan was excellent- it was warm and freshly made. It was very cold in the restaurant, and the decor is very sparse. It also took a while for our food to come, but I understand that this is because the food is made to order. However, the food was very good once it came, and our waiter was pleasant. The dessert menu was lacking with only two options, but that's okay. By the way, the place is BYOB. This was our first time eating Indian food, and we will be trying it again! read more

This is a typical Indian restaurant with average ambience. But the place is very clean and hygiene. We have ordered garlic naan and Hone Made Butter Chicken. Butter chicken is just awesome and the texture and creaminess of the gravy along with the wonderful taste made me satisfied. The biryani has a tinge of sweet in it probably from kissmiss. the seating area is small ... it probably had room for 20 dining guests. at 9 pm, the place is crowded and the waiter told me that i'd have to take to-go. for people who are used to spicy flavour of biryani, i would not suggest having biryani here. other stuff tasted ok, and they are also overpriced. read more

Had the chicken vindaloo here. Very tasty and spices were on point. In fact, I don't think I've ever had vindaloo that tasted like this...and that's a good thing! Naan is also very good. Their chicken tikka masala was different from other restaurants I have tasted, but in a good way. Additionally, their Bhel Puri appetizer tasted great, while also having great presentation, which is a usually messy dish. Contrarily, the space itself is quite small, and the look of the restaurant resembles somewhat of a Chinese takeout place. Wait time took a lot longer than expected, so I would definitely recommend ordering appetizers. All in all, I would return to this restaurant, but most likely with a smaller group or to try take-out. I came here again last night after convincing my cousin that he needed to try it. I was in the mood for it, so I was happy that I finally made it over for a second time. The owner was standing in the dining area, waiting for people to come in. We were greeted immediately and told to pick a seat. Our server was the same guy I very distinctly remember the only other time I was there (which is crazy), because the last time he looked like he was high as a kite. He's a little out there, but friendly. The only thing that bothered me that he was constantly touching his face and running his hands through his hair. We shared the Chicken Tikka, Chicken Curry, and some garlic naan. The food was absolutely satisfying in every single way. I had wanted Tandoori Chicken, but unfortunately they didn't have it. I ordered the "dry" version of Chicken Tikka, and it was just as delicious. I was completely happy with my meal, and so was my cousin. That sweet burn lasted in my mouth for a good hour after I left. Be prepared to wait a little while for your food. I don't have problems with things like that, but others might. It's worth waiting for. Come here when you have a good conversation companion with you, or even a good book. You won't be let down when your food arrives. My server ended up vanishing out of nowhere at one point. We sat and waited for awhile after we were finished eating. The manager came over to clear our plates and asked if everything was okay. We spoke volumes about the food. I thought I was left a check the last time I was there, and we even asked for one...but no one ever came with it. I finally just got up and asked if I could pay them in a respectful manner. All was good. The guy working the counter was very friendly and apologized about not having when I originally wanted to order. The competition for Indian food in Bensalem is stiff. Fortunately, Spice Rack fulfills a much needed niche: moderately priced, extremely tasty North and South Indian food. The owner of Spice Rack takes a great deal of pride in what he puts on his customers' tables, and you can taste it. Unlike at many other Indian establishments, Spice Rack relies on high quality ingredients, deft seasoning, and a restrained hand with fats. The result is dishes that are consistently pleasing in terms of flavors, textures, and aromas. The lamb is succulent, tender, and pleasantly gamey. My Lamb Achari had a perfect balance between richness and tanginess, and the Lamb Kadai boasted a great contrast between a sweet, smoky sauce and bright vegetables. These dishes give my beloved Asian Halal Meat around the corner a run for its money. Similarly, the "Tikka Masala" sauce (whether it be for paneer or chicken) is not overly rich and has a great balance of spice and tomato flavor. Usually, the dish is excessively creamy so it's refreshing to have tried a lighter version. Naans are pillowy soft with the perfect amount of paper thin crispness on the crust. There are off-menu South Indian dishes, including dosas of every variety, vadhas, and idlis. These are serviceable and on par with other area restaurants, though I prefer Spice Rack's North Indian fare. We dined here for my mom's birthday since it was close to home. Given the reviews we were expecting the food to have a lot of wow factor but the meal turned out to be on par with the average South-East Asian restaurant with a few hits and a few misses. The dining setup is cozy and functional with the exception of the table that is right next to the door on a cold wintry day. We ordered a vegetable pakora (fritters), a Chicken 65 and a Palak (Spinach) Soup for appetizers. The fritters were good and not too greasy and so was the Chicken 65. We were expecting a little more heat in the latter but not a deal breaker. The soup seemed healthy with not a lot of cream in the preparation but again was on the mildly spiced side. Moving on to the main course, we opted to get a Vegetable Biryani, Daal Tadka (spiced lentils), the Butter Chicken and Egg Curry for Entrees. We also opted to get a Chili Naan and a Phudina Paratha (Mint Paratha) for Bread selections. The stand out selections from the main course were the Vegetable Biryani and the Breads. The Biryani was surprisingly good for a vegetarian option with moist rice and a likable flavor. The breads were soft and flavorful. As far as the rest of the dishes, the Butter Chicken tasted very generic and slightly on the sweeter side. The Daal Tadka had a slight flavor of raw garlic amidst other tempered spices. The Egg Curry was the least liked for the night given the addition of sugar (quite surprising and off-putting given the sweetness). Service was prompt and acceptable. Took the advice of the Yelp community and visited the Spice Rack. They did not disappoint. the restaurant itself is small and comfortable. It looks to primarily be a take out establishment, but my wife and I decided to dine in. The server was very friendly and explained menu items we had questions about, all with a smile. We started the meal off with some soup, my wife getting the sweet chicken and corn, while I opted for the mulligatawny. If not for the other people eating in, we would have licked the bowls clean. The mulligatawny was a nice thick broth soup with mild flavor that had surprising depth. The sweet chicken and corn soup, which I couldn't help stealing a few spoonfuls of, had a noticeable, but not overpowering sweetness and just a hint of spice to it. For the main meals, my wife opted for the Chicken Korma and I for the Lamb Biryani. We loved that we could choose how spicy the dishes would be. My wife opted for mild, while I went with the spiciest option. The Chicken Korma came with a generous portion of long grain rice. The chicken was cooked in a beautiful curry sauce. The chicken was tender and the flavor was fantastic. The Lamb Biryani was a massive meal. The rice was layered with rice, spices and chunks of delicately cooked lamb. The aroma from this dish was amazing. Thankfully, it tasted even better. I had to forcefully stop myself as to not over stuff my face. We also tried the Sweet Lassi drinks. A yogurt blended drink that was light and airy. The foamy texture of the drink was like that of the lightest whipped cream you could imagine. Don't let the strip mall location fool you. I was here in December. This place is really quite good, and I'm giving five stars despite the level of ambiance, which is to say "zero." It looks like a takeout place in the city--like it should have the big glass shield in front of the counter. Maybe it's not quite that bad, but you get the drift--square faux wood shiny tables, hard chairs, nothing comfy about it. But who cares when the food is this good? It's consistently excellent, which with my Southwest city attitude didn't expect (when will I ever learn?) One caveat, though--when they say "spicy" they really mean it. Someone should train the waitstaff to offer at least a semblance of warning. "Spicy" is by an Indian palette, I would guess, not an American one. Sunday dinner time order was carry out for one; butter chicken (mild), garlic naan & a mango lassi. Much to my surprise I was informed the order was not going to be ready for 45 minutes. Maybe the place was chock a block w/ diners? Arrived 45 minutes later & waited an additional 15 minutes before it was ready. There wasn't a single diner in the store but there was at least six people waiting for carry out. The butter chicken was missing something. It wasn't bad but it didn't have the flavor I am used to (dare I say it may have needed salt?). It wasn't hot either but that was remedied by a quick stint in the microwave. Garlic naan was right flavor but was undercooked. Like another reviewer I would better appreciated, not crispy naan, but just cooked longer, past the flimsy stage whereby the naan was difficult to tear because it wasn't finished. Really disappointed with the basmati rice, both quantity & lack of flavor. A two cup portion of butter chicken was accompanied by only one cup of rice. This was the first time I had butter chicken left over b/c of a lack of rice. It was bland enough I elected to pick the remaining chicken out, & after dunking naan into the broth, threw what was left out. The mango lassi was a nice addition to the meal.
