Heavily recommended- Nandu Chaaru Good- Kothu (or Kottu) Roti I was at this tasty Sri Lankan restaurant a few days ago, with this being one of the very few Sri Lankan spots in the city outside of Sigiri and the various spots in Staten Island. This is easily the most expensive one, but the food overall was good quality, with my definite preference going towards my appetizer of the two dishes. I was here sans reservation, and they gave me a table in the closed garden area in the back, which I liked, as the lighting was better. The server I had was very friendly and gave good attention, even though he was also working with a bunch of other tables, which had folks with more questions as they weren't used to Sri Lankan/South Indian food. To drink, I thought of getting a cocktail, or more likely a chaas/spiced buttermilk, but I stuck with tap water, partially due to the prices. My appetizer was the outstanding $15 Nandu Chaaru, listed as cilantro flavored extract of Dungeness crab. The dish description might list it as an extract, but there was a whole crab inside, chopped up into tiny pieces. The broth was deliciously spicy with plenty of crab flavor along with the aforementioned cilantro and a large mix of warming spices. I guess the only complaint I can make is that it was difficult to eat the crab inside in any type of polite way, but they provided a second point. This was appreciated, as I removed some of the crab and ate it separately, along with putting some of the meat back into the soup. My main dish was the Kothu Roti, which ranges in price depending on what protein is used, from $25 to $30. Also known as Kottu Roti, this dish is listed as a Sri Lankan roadside specialty prepared from shredded paratha stir-fried with vegetables, onions, and egg. I went with the $30 lamb, as this is my general preference, and there was a pretty good amount of tender pieces. The dish had a mild kick to it, but wasn't as spicy or as flavored as the crab soup. I liked the egg mixed into it as well as when I added the well-flavored soup on the side. In terms of comparing it to other spots, I liked the version at Sigiri a tiny bit more, as it was cheaper and had a better kick, but it had less meat. My favorite version of this dish is the similar Kothu Parotta at Anjappar, which is much spicier. This is a good place serving elevated Sri Lankan food. They might plate things in a more fanciful way, but the flavors are well pronounced. I would go back and try some other dishes, or the banana leaf dishes/virundhu on the weekend. read more

Lungi was a bit of a letdown. The service felt chaotic--condiments were missed, upon multiple requests arrived when we were nearly done eating. Even the sequencing of dishes was a bit off, making the experience feel awkward. The food itself was a mixed bag. Rundown: - Spicy Mutton Pepper Fry (4.5/5): excellent flavor, but the semi-dry gravy would work best paired with bread or rice. Not as a dry appetizer, as it was served. - Deafman Shop Tawa Fry (4.5/5): Very solid, but definitely on the spicier side--be prepared. - Hoppers (5/5): Perfectly soft, lacy, and flavorful; cools down quickly, so timing matters. - Parotta (3/5): not flaky so just felt dense with the ghee/oil in between the supposed-layers. Not ideal to scoop the curries when it's of this consistency. - Cauliflower 65 (3/5): Slightly over-fried and lacking seasoning. - Paneer Ghee Roast (2/5): Disappointing. The paneer was extremely tough making it inedible, and the ghee roast flavor was muted. - Goat Curry (4/5): Nicely done overall, though the meat could have been more tender. - Kori Ghassi (3/5): Underwhelming. Gravy felt diluted and there were too few pieces of chicken to justify the price. - Wattalapam (5/5): Perfect ending- light, refreshing, and flavorful. Portion sizes lean small, with more gravy than protein across dishes. Combined with the cramped table space, it makes for a tight dining experience, especially if you're ordering multiple items. I heard about Lungi twice in the same two weeks - once because they won a Michelin Bib Gourmand award for delicious Sri Lankan food; and the second because a Sri Lankan taxi driver told me independently that he likes to come here for good sri lankan food. So of course you know I had to come try it. Everything was really tasty and authentic - our waiter was so friendly and helpful in guiding us through the menu. The hoppers (rice flour based carb you eat your food with) were thin, slightly crisp, and reminiscent of Ethiopian injera or Chinese sweet white rice cakes. Loved trying this Sri Lankan restaurant! My first experience with this cuisine and what an amazing restaurant to experience it at. The ambiance was beautiful, surprisingly spacious and copy in the back. Easy availability of reservations even for larger groups but still packed on a Saturday night. Attentive and kind service who make recommendations since our group was less familiar. Prices were fair, ended up being ~$60pp but this is because we over ordered - we wanted to try everything! The Guntur Chili Mushroom appetizer was a huge hit at our table. I enjoyed the tawa fish fry (not really fry). Of note, their spice was very strong for me. The medhu was very good but I learned a south indian dish so probably would stick with other Sri Lankan specialties here next time. I loved trying the veg kothu and the accompanying dishes. The string hopper was very expensive and essentially just like a noodle wrap but really enjoyed trying the hopper, which reminded me a steam rice cakes in Chinese cuisine. Also tried the okra curry, which was light and creamy balance for all the spicy dishes. And the short rib curry which was a lot of meat and very rich and flavorful. Dropped in for a nice Friday night dinner with da hubby with zero expectations but when we saw the Michelin ratings for 2024 and 2025 (turns out not Michelin Star but a Michelin bib gourmand), we got pretty geeked up for an unforgettable culinary experience. My favorite place to come back to again and again in NYC! Sri Lankan food can be really hard to find, and if you're looking to introduce someone to the cuisine, this is absolutely the place to do it. I've been here for both brunch and dinner and had great experiences each time. Just a heads up -- the brunch menu features fewer traditional Sri Lankan dishes than dinner, so if you want the full experience, I'd lean dinner. Some of my favorites are the cutlets, rolls, and kottu. The drinks are beautiful *and* delicious, and if you're feeling adventurous, definitely try the string hoppers, egg hoppers, and lumprais (the one wrapped in banana leaf) -- so flavorful and fun to share! This is a great spot to come with a group so you can sample as many dishes as possible. Both times I visited, the food, drinks, and service were consistently excellent. Loved this experience. Must-try South Indian and Sri Lankan food! We got a variety of appetizers - the mutton roll was phenomenal, but the fish fry was a bit too fishy tasting and dry. The most delicious and high quality Sri Lankan food I've had in North America. Some dishes are authentic Sri Lankan, while some are Indian or Sri Lankan-Indian fusion dishes. The Jaffna crab curry and the prawn curry were simply delicious and pairs well with plain rice. The eggplant moju is also fantastic and authentic Sri Lankan. Let me start by saying, I lived in Sri Lanka for two years. So I know Sri Lankan food. I wanted to like it and had been looking forward to this visit for awhile. I went here with another adult and his two kids. We sat in the back covered and enclosed patio area, which was nice. The service was fine nothing extraordinary. It took some of the dishes a while to get to us. We got eggplant curry, vegetable roti, vegetable biriyani, string hoppers, and okra. First off, it was ridiculously expensive for the amount you got. Second, everything was very spicy and we didn't order anything spicy. The other adult and I were fine with it, but the poor kids didn't have many options. Even the biriyani was spicy. I think this place has the potential to be a real winner, but there are still a few kinks they need to iron out. The cocktail menu is definitely interesting, drawing on South Indian flavors, which I loved in theory, but they all felt oddly familiar to drinks I've had in the past so it missed the mark in terms of innovation. For appetizers, the Guntur chili mushroom was excellent, and the crispy chicken dish was easily my favorite of the night. We also tried the goat liver dish, which I thought was great if you're into liver. The fish fry was quite a letdown, it was dry and lacked flavour. Also wasn't a big fan of the mutton roll that the server recommended. For mains, the special goat curry was excellent, and the Mangalorean chicken was good. Unfortunately, the wait for the hoppers was too long. By the time they arrived, the curries had gone cold, and it makes such a big difference in the dining experience if you don't time it just right. We also got the drinks mid meal instead of the usual start which I also felt threw off the service a little bit. Now for the actual dishes, the Malabar paratha was lovely, but the hoppers even after such a long wait, ended up being disappointing. Too big, too thick, and way heavier than the light, delicate texture I've had elsewhere. We also got the goat biryani - not your usual style of biryani, but I still enjoyed it, although not everyone on my table did. Some highlights for the few samplings of the menu: Cauliflower 65 - love love love, crispy coated cauliflower. Looks hot but it's not too spicy. The crunch and texture makes it so good, I get it every time I come ! Deafman shop tawa fish fry - this is ok. I like my fish more tender and juicy, and this focuses more on the fried aspect. It is very hot though (as in spicy) Rameshwaram Dosa and Masala Dosa - the masala dosa is the more classic dosa, mild flavor with potato and dosa but so good with the chutney. The rameshwaram dosa is a little different, some more flavors but I prefer the masala dosa Lamb kothu roti - I've gotten this twice and the first time I really liked it. The 2nd time I think because fewer people and having more of it, it's a lot. It's a little spicy but I love lamb and paratha so this is a great combo. It can be a lot as your only dish so it's better to share (becomes monotonous to eat) We were recommended the curries and we tried one but it was ok. We had the black short rib kari and though it was not bad , probably wouldn't get again and would try something different. I went to Lungi on a weekday for lunch and was so impressed by how authentic the South Indian food was. The appam and pol sambol especially stood out as they reminded me so much of my grandmother's cooking. It had been a long time since I had pol sambol, so it was really special to enjoy it again. We ordered fish cutlet, mutton stew, idiyappam, and appam. For dessert, we ordered Wattalappam which was not overly sweet but tasted great! Everything was delicious and tasted authentic. I came here for lunch on a Saturday. We were excited to try the banana leaf thali, but it turned out they only offer this on Sundays. The restaurant is roomy with seating in the front, an additional side room, and a patio, which opens a bit later in the day. Decor wasn't too memorable, but I liked that they had some breathing room in between tables. The appetizers were my favorite part of the meal. The chili mushrooms were delicious. They were subtly crispy and generously coated in a flavorful chili sauce. Despite the chili, they were not very spicy. I also enjoyed the deviled paneer, which was a firm texture and also tossed in a rich sauce. The rameshwaram dosa was tasty. It was thicker than traditional dosa and topped with onions and spices. The egg kothu roti was a generous portion size and very filling, with scrambled egg and roti fried with vegetables and onions. The pachakari avial was also a top dish for me. It was loaded with whole green and orange chili peppers (easy to mistake the orange ones for carrots!), so it was quite spicy. I enjoyed the heat, but it might be too much for some. Waiters were not the most attentive and we had to wait a bit to place our order, request water refills, and get the check. They had digital devices with call buttons at the tables, but they didn't seem to be working. I wish I could give this place more stars! I met up here for Sunday brunch last week with some folks that I lived with in Sri Lanka for a few years. We traveled from Washington DC, Connecticut and Gettysburgh to tuck into the Virundhu banana leaf Sunday special. We arrived starving and were met by the most incredible smells- floral with an strong undercurrent of spice. We were seated on the lovely back patio and were waited on hand and foot from the moment we arrived til the moment we left. The food was a riot of colors and flavors and transported us back to the island. Definitely the most delicious food I have eaten in recent memory. We all ate until it hurt and could not finish the 2 Virundhus we spilt between the 4 of us. Side note: After we got done walking off the huge meal, we started poking around for a spot to watch the World Cup Final. We popped our heads into a few sports bars, but it was all elbows and assholes​. Serendipitously, we decided to pop back into Lungi. The staff was watching the match in the bar lounge area before the dinner shift started and very graciously invited us to join them and got us some drinks. We stayed for dinner. Kerala Beef Chukka (4/5): Not as much of a fan as I thought I would be. The small bites were flavorful but dry. Kori Ghassi (5/5): Mangalorean chicken curry was packed with flavor. I ordered takeout for pickup from Lungi without knowing it was on the Michelin guide. The restaurant itself is very elegant and welcoming. It was so busy on a Wednesday night. The staff was super friendly and helpful. Our food took a long time because we had a big order and it was a full house. The staff gave us regular updates on our order and let us sit by the bar while we waited. They forgot to pack a part of our order and had it delivered for free. The food itself was delicious. I'm used to North Indian food and we weren't super familiar with the dishes we ordered. Every dish was so amazing! Full of flavor without being overpowering or salty. We had great service throughout and the food was really good. We asked for the mildest possible spice level and even with that we were all a bit sweaty. All the dishes we had were great. Lungi is a South Indian & Sri Lankan Restaurant. It is also a Michelin 2024 winner. My friend and I wanted to try out a new to us place and he found this place. I am not one to pick an Indian place to go for a drink as I am sensitive to some of the smells of Indian food. But, it was ok here. We sat at the bar and enjoyed our drinks. I had just a regular gin and tonic and my friend had an old fashioned, which was one of the speciality cocktails on the menu. We were chatting with the Bartender who was very nice and telling us about the restaurant and about his personal journey to becoming working there. If I remember correctly his name is Dan. The bar area here is simple but very nice and intriguing. If you find yourself in this area, I would stop by, if not for food then just for a drink. read more

The special banana leaf meal here was a real pleasure. I'm very happy with the changes that Lungi made over its predecessor. There was an enormous variety of dishes - the vegetarian option has Gobi 65, biryani, chickpea with pearl onions, cauliflower, dal, sambar, rasam, achaar, dahi, papadam, and rava kesari, served with rice. The non-veg option came with two extra meat dishes. Each dish was very flavorful and unique, working together to provide a wide variety of flavors. The presentation on the banana leaf was also really nice. For the meal plus masala chai, the cost worked out to around $67. It's certainly expensive, but it's probably the only meal you'll need for the day, and worth it for the variety and the quality. read more

Walked in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and the place was relatively busy. Staff was kind enough to get me seated even though they were about to close the restaurant for afternoon. What was formerly Imli is now Lungi, and I believe it is the same team, but with a more South Indian and Sri Lankan forward menu. Fresh look too - new interiors, brighter decor, and a good patio seating. Sri Lankan food good us excited and we ordered Vegetarian Kothu ($22), Kerala Mutton Stew (27), and Plain Dosa ($15) for our little one. Cocktails are mixed by their partner, Vincent who was friendly enough to chat with us and also make a very good Old Fashioned! Food overall was good, although the Kothu did not live up to it's Sri Lankan standards (my reference being Sigiri on LES). Kothu was very roti forward and lacked the kind of roasted taste that I was expected. It was much more moist and didn't really have much flavor. The stew on the other hand was flavorful and tasted better the next day! Service was excellent, and the menu is slightly on the pricier side. Definitely worth a visit for their South Indian menu and cocktails. Will visit again with friends and family! read more

We stopped by for dinner last night to celebrate a birthday. Found parking 2 blocks away. Friendly welcoming staff. Nice clean restaurant. We sat at the back of the restaurant. V nicely decorated w glass ceilings . So many good items on the menu n it was a tough choice deciding what we wanted. As always I went for the mutton rolls n fish cutlets. They tasted really good but for the price we paid we got only 2 rolls n 2 cutlets. Think it's a lil rip off . Had the sura( shark ) pittu which was ok. The poricha koli n mutton liver pepper fry were yummy too. Poricha koli was small pieces , fried n spicy n tasty . The mutton liver was flavorful too. The kanyakumari nethali was spicy n tasted good too. I skipped the entrees but the others ordered egg kothu roti n lamb Biriyani. They were pretty good n spicy . We also had to try the black short rib Kari n prawn curry. The prawn curry was good n the sauce made the difference. Short rib Kari was good too. There was LO's Saturday lunch.
