The beautiful, state of the art, Johnny L. Tigner Community Center is a crown jewel for Deerfield Beach. It was named in honor of Johnny L. Tigner who was born in Georgia but grew up in Deerfield Beach. He was well regarded for spearheading many city initiatives including Big 3 Basketball, Family Kickball, Family Fun Day, and Women's Flag Football. He worked at many athletic events in positions as varied as selling concessions, officiating games, or operating the PA system in his distinctive voice. He especially had a heart for the youth in the community and strived to make Deerfield Beach a better place to live. Community Center amenities include a BSO sub station, ballroom, kitchen, and outdoor patio. Upstairs there is a multipurpose room, dance studio, and a production studio. The community center is available for private rentals with a discounted price for Deerfield Beach city residents. I attended an event in the ballroom that was created to benefit the Deerfield Beach Historical Society. Titled George Was Here, it was a photographic exhibit of pictures of former Beatle George Harrison and his then wife Pattie Boyd and the Beatles' assistant Mal Evans on a 10 day trip to Deerfield Beach in November of 1970. It took place after the break up of the Beatles. Harrison came to visit his aunt and uncle and he stayed at the Shore Road Inn, now known as Pier Walk. Just before the trip he put the finishing touches on his solo album, "All Things Must Pass." In 2024, 18 never-before-seen photographs of Harrison were found at a Deerfield Beach apartment building owned by his maternal uncle and aunt, Edmund and Mimi French. To protect his privacy, many locals kept the secret of Harrison's visit for over 50 years. Fun fact, Florida has another Beatles break up connection. John Lennon signed the legal papers dissolving the Beatles on December 29, 1974, while staying at the Polynesian Village Resort at Disney World in Orlando. The event was very interesting and it benefitted a great organization which strives to preserve the history of the city. I also enjoyed checking out this new community center. In addition to the photographs and historical information, there was light bites from the Deerfield Beach Historical Society, beer, wine, and soda for sale, event posters for sale, and a live band playing George Harrison's music. This was a reminder of just how much Deerfield Beach has to offer. George Was Here is for two nights only, concluding today.

I love city recreation centers. It is where the community can go for classes, fitness, and events…read more I was recently at the Tamarac Recreation Center for the Community Garage Sale. The large parking lot was filled with vendors selling a variety of items. I picked up several useful and cool things very inexpensively. The Tamarac Recreation Center is located in Tamarac Park. The Recreation Center with has offices while the park has baseball fields, a covered playground, concession stand, restrooms, and picnic tables. Adjacent to the Tamarac Park Recreation Center is the Tamarac Multipurpose Center. The facility has a gymnasium, meeting rooms, teen council, art room, restroom, and locker rooms. Tamarac stages many events at these facilities and the park throughout the year. For a full listing of vents check the Parks and Recreation section on the Tamarac city website or follow parks and rec on Instagram and Facebook. An upcoming event is the 5K Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day. This is a great resource for the residents of Tamarac and its visitors.

The Wimberly Athletic Complex is a park in the industrial warehouse section of Oakland Park. It was…read morenamed in honor of Harry L. Wimberly, one of the most beloved and dedicated public servants to the City of Oakland Park. His grandparents moved to area in the 1920's where they made their living as vegetable farmers. Harry began his career in Oakland Park by mowing lawns for the City. For the next 40 years he worked in various positions where he led a team of City employees responsible for streets and building maintenance, parks and roads, solid waste, water, stormwater, wastewater, and garage operations. Harry was known as being willing to do any job needed. He became the City's Recreation Director when the parks and recreation departments were combined and retired as the Director of Public Works in 1996. Harry is perhaps most well known for for helping organize the City's first Youth Day celebration in 1957. Youth Day continues to live on with Broward County's longest-running parade and it is still held every year at the park. Today the City of Oakland Park's youth enjoys all that Harry Wimberly put into the city at the Wimberly Athletic Complex. Park amenities include a baseball/softball diamond, concession stand, football field, and hockey rink. Just south of Wimberly Park is the brand New City Park which opened in 2022 and has lighted basketball court, pickleball courts, a woodland themed playground with shade cover, splash pad, and restrooms. Harry Wimberly loved the children of Oakland Park and he was devoted to making it the best city it could be. It is fitting that such an important gathering place and recreational resource in the community carries his name.

There wasn't a lot of parking close by the playground, only street parking nearby. There might be more parking by the baseball fields. We have been to a lot of parks and this one could have been more creative with the space.

The park is a small area on a lake with native trees and plants. Park amenities include a small pavilion, fenced in playground, and benches. The grand royal Poinciana tree was in full bloom today. The much larger Quiet Waters park with many more amenities is just a few blocks north. Trailhead Park connects to the Trailhead Linear Park which runs along the west side of Powerline Road, roughly between SW 10th Street and Green Road. On one side you have the lake and the on the other side is Powerline Rd. The linear trail provides a safe place to walk, run, or ride a bike.

Highlands Park is a 3.3 acre neighborhood park located next to the Highlands Community Center which was built in 1998 and contains an auditorium and two classrooms. Programs offered include karate, Art with Shelia, and Ms. Peach's Little Bookworms. Park amenities include a basketball court, covered playground with toddler area and one for older children, two pavilions with picnic tables, and an open space for play and recreation. There were a lot of large shade trees in the park. I ducked in to use the restrooms and was delighted to find it clean and stocked. Some people were setting up for a party as I was leaving. This looks like a well maintained green space ideal for the community's recreational enjoyment.

Memorial Park is a 17 acre park located in downtown Boca Raton behind the Boca Raton City Hall and…read morejust north of that, the Boca Raton Community Center. The land here used to be the city's Water Plant. By 1960 the original Boca Raton City hall had become outdated so the new city hall was moved here which provided a lot more room to grow. Memorial Park has a large parking lot since it also serves the municipal building. During the holidays the town decorates the giant ficus trees with holiday lights. The city also stages events in the park like food truck nights. if there is a downtown night event. The last time I was here it was to park for the Boca Raton Holiday Parade. Park amenities include a baseball/softball field, basketball court, football field, picnic tables, playground with a tot area and one for older children, restrooms, tennis courts, and soccer field. There is also an EV charging station. Memorial Park is great for athletics or taking the kids to play. The tennis courts are always very popular. Walking the perimeter of the park is also great exercise.

Meadows Park is a nearly 13 acre park centrally located in Boca Raton just east of Boca Raton…read moreMiddle School. Set next to a canal, it has a plenty of parking and many shade trees. A popular amenity at Meadows Park is its 8 lane, 25 yard by 25 meter pool with two diving boards. Resident children pay $2 and adults are $4 while non residents pay double. You can also purchase monthly, semi annual, and annual memberships. The Boca Mantas Swim Team trains at the pool and the pool offers swim lessons. Meadows park is also the home of the 1.4 acre Boca Community Garden which opened on October 16, 2021. The garden is sponsored by the Junior League of Boca Raton, Brightline, City of Boca Raton, Community Greening and Tree City USA. Garden plots can be rented by Boca Raton community members from $60 to $110 per plot. Residents can also participate in gardening classes. Inside the garden is a gazebo with seating. There is a new playground being installed that is themed to match the community garden. The garden smelled lovely and I really loved exploring it and getting inspiration for things I can grow in my own school community garden. The garden and pool make Meadows Park a special destination in the Boca Parks and Rec holdings. The park also has a baseball field, sand volleyball court, tennis courts, picnic tables, and grills, and a paved exercise path. The park will be even nicer when the brand new playground is completed. Come out and enjoy all this park has to offer.

We were having lunch around the corner when we decided to come by this park and check it out. It's…read morequite small. In fact, we passed by the entrance to it. It's one way in and one way out of the car lot. This park is more concrete than "park", although it is connected to a large open grassy field. The majority of the trees and bushes (greenery) are in the parking lot between the car rows. In addition, the John Trudel Community Center building with various programs is located right next to the park. The park is mainly two basketball courts and four pickleball courts. And they are blue painted pavement -- not green. We observed some kids getting lessons on the pickleball court and one older guy shooting baskets on one of the basketball courts. It's still a nice convenience for the locals in Lighthouse Point as it is located amidst the houses in a residential section of the city. I am glad we found it. But it's not the place you'd wish to go out of your way to visit unless you lived nearby.
