I waited to write a review after getting three haircuts here, to make sure my first (or second) experience wasn't a fluke. It wasn't, this is the real deal. I moved back to Midtown Manhattan after being out of the area for over a decade and I'm finding my essential services one by one. Thanks to the help of fellow Yelpers, I've had very few missteps. As you can see by my picture, I'm not the $10 buzz cut type of guy. My hair is usually the first things people comment about me (thanks to its crazy very salt/less pepper coloring) and the sheer volume. Obviously I don't want to wait for a bad haircut to grow out and I'd rather pay more than make a mistake for a month. Gerry, the owner, has the first chair when you enter and he is "the man." There's a reason why he's been around so long - he listens to what you want and his skills are top-notch. Add to that a great personality - it's like visiting with a old friend. Gerry remembers everything you've spoken about and is 100% genuine. Best of all, my hair grows out perfectly. I'd rather look like I didn't just get a haircut and tend to wait 5 or 6 weeks in between visits. From reading other reviews, it looks like he charges more than everyone else in the shop but he should - he's the owner - yet I'm used to paying a LOT more elsewhere - so this is a bargain and a half for a long-lasting cut. Yesterday was my first haircut at Spiotta. I have lived in Manhattan for 8 months now and still hadn't found a place I liked. I continually visited barber shops, but for my style of hair -- I needed a salon. I found this place because it was near my work (in Times Sq). I felt like it was hard to find a place in times sq that wasn't either seedy or outrageously expensive. I walked right in, and sat down with "Susanna" (Susan), a spanish woman from Mexico who didn't speak perfect english but really listened to exactly what I wanted. She took the time to teach me as well about why she was doing certain things and how to style it. Free coffee was offered. She didn't talk my ear off but was very personable and nice. She made a point to learn my name and make me feel comfortable during my first visit and welcomed me back again. I will definitely be going back and hope to make this a regular spot for a haircut. They're skilled and know what they're doing -- they know how to listen to what you want while still giving professional advice on what will look best on you. Needed an early morning place for a cut before a conference and found Spiottas opened at 7:30 AM. Without an appt. I walked in and got a chair by 7:35. Angelo made me feel like a regular even though clearly the other patrons truly were (greeting with hugs in the morning,verbally confirming appts for later in the week, giving and taking jokes in stride). They knocked out a shoe shine, great cut, and handed me an expresso and had me on my way by 8:15. The only issue was I felt like I stole something! I recently relocated back to NY and was totally freaking about where I was going to get my hair cut and colored. I am one of the most fussy and particular people on the face of the planet about everything, especially my hair. For many years, I'd get my hair cut and it would look good for about a week or so, then bam - it would look horrible. It lost its shape and style - it just laid there like a mop. I'd be forced to wear a ponytail every day until I went back for another cut and the same awful cycle took place, no matter which stylist I went to and how much money I spent. I have to be honest here, I was a little hesitant about going. At first sight, I thought it was a barber shop...but it's not - it's a salon. Ladies - DO NOT let those little barber thingys outside scare you away...I love this salon. Now let's talk about Gerry Spiotta, the owner. WOW - this man can cut hair. Seriously. I've never had my hair cut like this before. The first time I got in his chair (which is very comfortable, by the way) I was going to tell him what to do, but decided to let him do whatever he wanted...I had nothing to lose. Let me tell you -- he gave me a makeover that I never expected. He transformed me. His intuition and talent was obvious by the time he finished. I really can't believe what he has done for me and how I look. My hair looks fabulous every day. Seriously. I never wear a pony tail anymore. I kept thinking today is the day it's gonna start looking bad, become limp and just hang, but it's been 5 months now since I've been going to him and I haven't had that problem. My cut is beautiful and perfect. He's never cut it too short where I have to wait 2 weeks for some grow out - it looks great from day one. Gerry has hit it out of the park every time. He was born to cut hair. My color is beautiful too. And one of the best parts is that for all of Gerry's spectacular service, it doesn't break the bank and cost you your whole paycheck. Gerry's rates are so reasonable that it's hard to believe you're in Midtown. One last thing, yes there are lots of salons to go to and yes there are lots of stylists out there. However, for me, there is more to getting your hair done than that. I'm very, very selective about where I get my hair cut. If I can't get an appointment where I like to go, I just cut it myself. I've been needing a haircut for the last few weeks, very badly and haven't had time to cut it myself. I walk by this shop everyday without much though. I actually walked by today, glanced in and thought I should give it a shot. So I stopped, turned around and walked right in. I don't like a lot of retail stores and services in Midtown because they're usually expensive or dingy. Spiotta was neither. I often see them cleaning the front steps in the evening. (Something most shops don't do, which I consider an obligation for 1st floor owners and renters. Appearance matters, ever if it is't your responsibility.) I was able to get a seat in a very nice barber's chair, right off the bat. I forgot who had given me the cut, but he was nice, quiet, asked few questions and did a very nice job with minimal direction from me. I was offered a coffee, but declined. -to the reviewer who seemed that he deserved to be offered this and a shoe shine. I don't know that asking would have hurt your chances. I found this place through yelp, and was glad that it was near the office. I've been there twice so far, and have been very pleased with my haircuts. They're very professional and courteous. They also give you coffee or espresso if you'd like, which is pretty cool. The first time I went, I called ahead, but the 2nd time, I just walked in around 1pm, and waited no more than 2 minutes. The pricing is also very reasonable. I'm a guy with short/medium hair. A shave and a haircut is $50. Just the haircut is $25. I also got shampooed both times, which I think is included if you want it. And the haircuts were scissors only, no buzzers. One barber also used this cool straightedge blade thing to do layer/fade the sides. I liked the sound it was making as it was chopping through hairs. I will go here again. read more

Horrible experience!! Even more.. a terrible haircut! I provided a style in the beginning (usually a salon has certified cosmetologists that have an understanding about layers and texturing). Dont even bother showing the style you want, because she'll say yes, but this is a false promise! BEWARE! Her name is Irene! I came in with a style from a previous salon that I used the same picture for the guide. The other professional stylist (same rates) knew that my hair is different so to achieve something similar to it, I would have to keep it a bit longer.. so I put my trust in this Girl Irene because SHE SAID SHE CAN DO IT. While I was texting on the phone, I looked up, and the whole back (long hair)was totally gone! from already having layers she didn't even ask about the back, but it's a typical barber shop fade!! She asked if I wanted to trim the sides... of course it was long.. after realizing that she cannot gel the sides back because of the length. She explained why she did it... "for when it grows back... you can style it"...Who the heck gets a hairstyle to wait till it grows back?!? She then blames me for saying yes to trimming the sides.. she said "if you say you want the sides trimmed.. that means you want it short around the ear... not long".. bare in mind.. I came in with long combed back sides... same as the picture.. this was supposed to be a trim! I complained during the haircut and we went back to the picture... she then realized that the picture still had a long back, and, that the sides were actually combed back (like when I came in).. repeating that "if you say yes to trim by the ears it means.. they will cut your hair short." I replied "But it looks nothing like the picture!!!" After the horrible haircut, this was an easy question I asked.. "what would you suggest to put in my hair?" She didn't know, didn't care anymore because I wasn't happy with my haircut. She was copping attitude. probably thought I wasn't going to tip her... but I still tipped her big regardless of her rudeness... but I walked out of this place with a hat.. and I miss my hair.. I wish I didn't have to make a review like this, especially on a nice establishment that offers you coffee while you get your haircut, and plays great music.
