If you're thinking about taking one of these tours (and I'd advise against it), then call to make sure you're scheduled to go with a trained guide. The night we attended, the owner had so many people signed up that he pawned half of us off on his teenage son and the son's apparent girlfriend. As the teenager-cum-tour guide led led us to a couple of downtown buildings, he stumbled through a few facts about the area architecture, but there were really no ghost stories, and not much actual information about Salem. When the teen did stop to point out architecture facts, he often got confused and muddled. "That building was constructed ... oh, actually, I forget when." "That's a masonic thing. My dad knows about that, but I don't." Occasionally, he was just totally factually wrong. "180,000 Chinese people lived in Salem in the 1800s. It is said that many of them are maybe buried in downtown." "I've been to the grave of Jack the Ripper in Rochester, NY." (Nobody knows who Jack-the-Ripper was.) Occasionally, the teen would check in with his girlfriend. "I forget what else. [Girl's name], have I missed anything?" Meanwhile, the apparent girlfriend slurped a starbucks frappucino. Occasionally, the apparent girlfriend would pipe up. When she did speak, she was more interesting than the teen -- telling a few Non-Salem anecdotes about Abraham Lincoln. At the end of the evening, we met up with the other tour group, which was guided by the proprietor and his wife. This couple (an actor and a spiritual medium) were actually pretty entertaining -- giving a few colorful ghost stories about actual Salem events. Spending time with this trained couple just showed us how much we were missing by going with the teenager and starbucks slurping girlfriend. So, unless you want to spend 90 minutes following muddled and half-forgotten stories, call ahead to MAKE SURE you are actually going with the adults. read more

Failed not once but twice on us! This is where this company is based is in Salem OR whether you book for the Reno NV, the Carson City NV, or the Virginia City NV haunted walking tours. First of all, before I even get started with my rant, DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME or MONEY WITH THIS COMPANY. They do not come through for you. In our case, twice a disappointing no-show of the tour guides! First booking was on April 26, 2014 we tried for the Reno NV haunted tour. Got there early to the location we were supposed to meet, even got a phone confirmation 10 minutes prior to the tour was supposed to start at 8:00p, waited for 30-min but the tour guide never showed up. It was only me and my hubby on this tour so maybe that's why they cancelled on us... but still! We were scheduled and got our phone confirmation. We called the following day to complain and they apologized and we were promised a free tour of any choice city we want aside from the Groupon deal. Yay! So I booked on-line using the Groupon deal and I was supposed to call them to set up the free tour. So, let's try this again... I booked online for the Carson City tour using the Groupon deal which was supposed to be last night, July 19, 2014. Guess what, another no-show! This time there are now 15 people pissed as 13 others showed up for this tour aside from us and some even coming from as far as San Francisco and Bay Area. Furthermore, all of us received email reminders confirming our tour the night before: "reminder about your upcoming activities." and at the end of the email "Have fun!" Just can't believe that this would happen to us twice! I'm sure we would get refunds from Groupon but it's just bad business on their part to not even give us a courtesy phone call that the tour would be cancelled or rescheduled or delayed or SOMETHING! The time and money spent to make it to these places coming from a distance are one thing but to be disappointed twice is even worse! How can we book our free tour if we couldn't even get a first tour! I read all of the reviews given by other Yelpers below and another disappointing thing had we completed one would be that the tour guide would have little or no knowledge of the history he/she would be giving a tour for. My wife and I had a Haunted Austin (Texas) Spirit Expedition planned and reserved a month in advance. A few days before I received an email that it had been canceled. Would not recommend anybody to go on the tour! The tour guy didn't show up! I booked the tour at Houston location. Two of us arrived about 3 minutes early, no one showed up. We called the company office, they said they couldn't get a hold of the tour guy, so we requested full refund. The tour guy called us early in the day to confirm our tour, because there was a chance of rain. We confirmed that we will be doing the tour even there was rain. ZERO STARS I bought an Amazon Local voucher for a haunted history walking tour of Philadelphia. Cheesy, but maybe fun? I wish I actually got to go on it. Their online reservation system does not accept the voucher numbers from Amazon Local. There's a phone number that only goes straight to voice mail and when you leave a message, no one calls back. I tried emailing their reservation email 4 times. It was answered once, where the person asked for my phone number. A week later still no call. Since I was unable to actually book this tour, I called to get my money refunded. This is easily one of the worst and most frustrating customer service experiences I've had in a long time. Online system never works W vouchers - will have 2 call disorganized office 2 make res. 1) Salem Walking Haunt This 1 starts @ old funeral home & goes by capital. Funeral home was very active 4 us. Used dowsing rods & ghost box. Then walked around the area getting stories of people who actually died @ those locations. Oregon history was inaccurate @ points, but we laughed it off. All in all it was a good time. 2) Portland Walking Haunt When they had PDX I was ready to go W my friend who does audio. We make it clear when booking we R interested in ghost box. People claim 2 hear things, so we want 2 record & clean up 2 C what is really said. We meet up W our group just 2 B told she doesn't have box. She's new & they don't trust her W AM/FM radio. I was already pissed - that was entire reason 4 going. Walk ST that smells of garbage 4 no reason. Just business DIST W no deaths. Story of Jack the Ripper & misc killers, none from the area. Ends at BLDG where worker died of natural causes. 20 PPL trying 2 get 1 ghost. Waste of time. 3) Sasquatch Hunt Weren't expecting Bigfoot, just fun. They knew nothing of parking. 2 hr everywhere, so not sure why it would B the issue they made it out 2 B. Left 30 min late. No reason 2 leave @ 3pm anyway. Time off work 4 nothing 2 do. Website is horrible. No info - what 2 bring, what's provided, itinerary. Boring bus ride W awful music. Nothing pointed out, no stops. Didn't know what tents they had. Tossed on ground & we had 2 pick up & set up. No professionalism, no service. Didn't offer 2 help PPL. Wander off 2 pick camp site. They make a point of telling about their guns, which is offputting. Guests can't have any weapons tho. They were sketchy. 2 hrs nothing 2 do. Took walk & came back 1 hr before dinner & were already eating. No 1 came to get us. Guides didn't have courtesy 2 wait 2 eat. Didn't serve online menu. Tiny burger/brat, not much 2 put on them & beans 4 dinner. We had 1 of EA so no choice for us both 2 have 1 or the other. PPL were hungry & ate lots of chips. No 1 liked food. Only soda/water. No smores/cupcakes promised 2 kids, but told every1 about them - 2 kids birthdays 2 boot. 30 min tromp thru uncut trail 2 put up cams - didn't download there so we could C. No flashlites. 3 hrs nothing 2 do. We wandered. Told PPL about restrm 1/4 mi away - they didn't even talk about bathrm. Free nitevision goggles from game used. Cheap plastic audio. $30 max. No batteries 4 most of it. Didn't tell how 2 operate or that audio records. No presentation of info 4 bigfoot. No maps, vid, pics, no stories for area, country, or world. Awful. By time hunt was started we already had done what they were about 2 do, so we sat by fire. 1.5 hrs was actually less than 1 hr. Dangerous 2 B around fallen trees W no lite to C. Went 2 bed & skipped 2nd outing - most did. no mats 4 tents, uncomfortable. Guides help selves 2 hot water B4 giving 2 patrons standing RT there 4 sum to make coffee. Didn't use carafe so NXT cup was tepid. Didn't serve online menu. Undercooked pancakes made 1 @ time 2 get cold. Over easy eggs 3 @ time 2 get cold. Didn't tell PPL food was ready, I did. Only other BEV was soda. No water. Only had 12 bottles 2 start 4 16 PPL. Ticked because I was thirsty. Smart responses from guides or just plain rude. Awful PPL 4 most part. Guests packed up quick 2 get out. Every1 complaining 2 eachother & were hungry. No alcohol allowed either. Just tell PPL they may be asked 2 leave group if they Bcome problem. Not private camp spot anyway, so can't make PPL leave. $75 per person & not even $5 worth food provided. Another $2-3 in snacks per person, but only that Bcause no food. Even @ 1/2 price U feel ripped off. Worst experience ever! My friend said that was the worst thing I've ever drug him 2. He was not happy. 6'4" guys need more than 1 tiny burger (doesn't eat beans) & chips 4 dinner followed by 1 pancake & egg. I had 2 feed him as soon as we got home. It was boring W nothing to do - should have been told 2 bring stuff if they weren't. Could have been OK if there was food. Allowing adults a beer isn't a big deal either. Luckily we camp, so were better prepared, others never had B4 tho. Would have brought more had we known they weren't really taking care of everything & there was plenty of room. It is not subject to what is called transaction sales tax, so considering I never got a refund on the sales tax, it's definitely a scam!! ZERO STARS!! After seeing these reviews I wish I had done more research before purchasing the the Groupon. I saw the deal for a tour of Sleepy Hollow and jumped on it because I thought it would be fun. I purchased the deal on July 27 and tried to schedule it on their website; of course it did not work. It kept telling me that it was an invalid code. I tried calling them and a nice woman answered and said the tour was so new that they were still training the tour guides. I thought that was a little weird to have the Groupon before there was an actual tour. However, she put my name on a waiting list and said it should not take more than 2 weeks for them to get back to me to schedule it. Towards the end of August I still had not heard from them. I tried calling but no one ever answers the phones. I left multiple voice messages with multiple different answering machines and sent multiple emails. When someone finally did get back to me, mid-September, she gave me a number to call to schedule the tour. I called it only to hear "this is a non working number'. Yes, they gave me a fake number. I called the toll free number on the website and in the middle of leaving a message, of course no answer, I got cut off. When I called it right back it said the number I had dialed was incorrect. It seemed like they turned off the toll free line, because when I called the other line it went through; to an answering machine of course. At that time I was fuming so I contacted Groupon saying that I could not get in touch with anyone to schedule the tour that I purchased. They said they contacted the "company" (I use that term very loosely) and said that they should get back to me within three days. Well, I don't know what they threatened them with, but I got a call the next night to schedule it, thank goodness I answered the call. I managed to schedule it no problem, the man was actually very nice. The day the tour was to take place, and hour before the start time they called and cancelled saying the tour guide had a family emergency. After reading all these other reviews, I seriously doubt that was true. I tried calling back 3 times with no answer. I'm talking within 5 minutes from them leaving the voicemail. I left a very nasty message to the "president" (again very loosely) of the "company". I contacted Groupon the next day and asked for a refund. It took me 3 months to try and schedule the last tour, there is now way that I am have the time or the energy to fight with these morons again to try a schedule a tour that has an almost 100% chance of getting cancelled again. We took the tour in EUGENE. To start off, there was a groupon deal for 12 dollars a person, and the manager insisted that I buy the ticket directly from them and they would still give me the discounted price. However, they still charged me full price. Though the tour guide was doing all she could, and was friendly, the tour was horrible. Rather than telling stories of events that happened in eugene or on location, the tour consisted of stories like "This alley we're standing in is just like the alley where Jack The Ripper killed prostitutes." In addition, there was no night vision recordings or anything like that, and the tour ended forty minutes earlier than advertised. I was very disappointed. I understand that this is for Salem, but I wanted to let people know the experience for Eugene, since it's not on yelp yet. read more

I have no idea how this company can be listed as one of the top attractions in Salem & have received a "Certificate of Excellence" from TripAdvisor. How can you give a company that sort of accolade when they don't even provide their promised service? (I'm looking at you TripAdvisor!) Long story short, the company cancelled their Baltimore tour (that I purchased through Groupon) on me three different times each time within a few days of the tour. They were not exceptionally rude, but not very friendly about helping me to reschedule. When I tried to reschedule with them the first time, the man on the phone immediately booked me for another date that he had neither asked me about or had even been mentioned. Of course I said that that would not work for me. More recently, my third scheduling attempt was cancelled due to "low numbers" for the winter season. If you can't afford to run tours in the winter, why are you offering them? Needless to say, I attempted to call the company several times over but they conveniently did not answer. Supposedly they are having problems with their phone lines. Not sure how that validates having your website barely function for over a week.... Anyway, needless to say I am disgusted with how these people run their business and attempted to seek refund from them. I finally gave up and called Groupon who did in fact refund me the money. In order to make a reservation, I called this company on 4 different occasions just to get a call back! On Saturday August 2nd, at 9pm I was supposed to do a tour with another couple. We both received TWO confirmation emails, we waited around for 30mins with no word from anyone. We called the 'emergency reservation line' multiple times, rang once then straight to voicemail. When the other couple called the main line to ask about it, they apparently 'had no idea' and would call the tour guide. I took the Ghost Tour last night in Salem, Oregon. It was interesting, but we didn't get coffee and cupcakes like the Groupon said we would get. Then we didn't go through the underground tunnels. Which is what I was really looking forward to. They also had no night vision recording like the Groupon said they would have. I bought a Living Social voucher for this tour and it took forever just to make a reservation because their online reservations with coupons didn't work, then I didn't get a call back for DAYS about actually booking the reservation. Don't ever expect to call and get to talk to an actual person...even for the "emergency" number. THEN, 3 days before my scheduled tour, I get an email that my reservation was cancelled, out of the blue, with no explanation. I tried calling and emailing for the subsequent 4 days and never got a response back until hours before the tour was scheduled. They said that the tour was canceled because of an emergency with the tour guide, which seems like their excuse for many many tours, judging by other reviews. They offered to rebook me, but their next tours weren't available until January...IN MINNESOTA! Plus, why would I want to go on a haunted history tour after Halloween! This company is a JOKE! This place is a SH$TSHOW! Made reservations over the phone because you cannot make reservations online with a Groupon. They called me to cancel reservations because the tour guide quit and they needed to train a new one. So we rescheduled our tour (after leaving 3 messages) with the new tour guide. Guess what happened next? They cancelled again because the new tour guide quit! Since I actually had them on the phone when they called to cancel, I quickly made another reservation without checking with the rest of my party. TERRIBLE COMPANY TO DEAL WITH!!! Absolutely unprofessional! A group of 6 booked this tour through Groupon. We arrived 30 minutes early to the location indicated on the confirmation email we received from Spirit Expeditions. The tour guide never showed. At the time our tour was supposed to be starting we began calling the company. All 6 of us called, I left a message and never did we receive an answer. Finally, one of the members of our group received a call back. The company said that the tour was already in progress and blamed us for not showing up on time. We were 30 minutes EARLY! They claimed that the tour guide showed up and there were about 6 people already there that claimed they were the only ones so they left. How does this happen? How can the tour guides not be informed of how many people should be on the tour and how can they leave more than 30 minutes ahead of time?!? It wasn't until after this experience that we researched the company and found that we weren't the only ones to have problems. We also noticed that there was another address listed for the starting location that did not agree to our confirmation email. No telling which one is correct, if either are, but this is a problem that the company should address. The company supposedly had our tour guide on the phone and said we could meet them a few blocks over. We declined and requested a refund. We are still working to get a refund as of this review. So far it is not looking good. We decided to drive to where the tour was supposedly stopped and willing to wait for us had we chosen that option. We split up in 3 different cars and drove around all the blocks within a mile radius of the location. None of us saw a tour group. Given the facts, it is hard to believe that there was a tour conducted at all. Quick Summary: Tour Guide a NO SHOW. Company EXTREMELY difficult to get on the phone if you have a problem. HORRIBLE Customer Service. NO REFUND even though they failed on their part. You decide if you're willing to risk it. There are plenty other local options. I purchased tickets to go on the Portland tour. I'm from Portland and thought it might be a fun and hopefully creepy walk around Hawthorne and hear some interesting ghost stories. Not! The tour guide was nice enough but she apparently collected various stories about Portland and vicinity from the internet and then repeated them by rote to us. None of the stories was all that interesting and unfortunately she was not a good storyteller. Only one or two actually pertained to the area we were walking in. First of all, let me say that our guide (Kristen??) was okay. She just didn't have anything to work with. We learned about lobotomies, serial killers, Jack the Ripper (seems to be a common theme), types of haunting. We gathered in a dark parking lot in a SE neighborhood ("possibly some of his victims were from around here"), the can and bottle recycling center at the Fred Meyer, an alley/street in back of the Baghdad. The only thing remotely connecting ghosts and hauntings was the possibility of a ghost in the theater because someone hung himself there. We were called and told that the starting location was switched and then called again and told the time had been moved up to 7:00. I would give them 0 stars. My wife, son, and I came from Medford, OR. While my Brother and his 3 kids came from Seattle. We met in Salem to take the tour together. It was horrible. They started late. They promised coffee and donuts, there were none. They promised equipment to search for ghosts but there was none. We were all disappointed, especially the children. When the guide called the owner to find out where he was with the coffee, donuts, and equipment, he told the guide to tell us the equipment is broke and they are ordering new stuff. After the tour we tried to get our money back and after a long hassle it was promised to us. Three months later they finally told us they are not giving us the money back. Spirit Expeditions can't be more than one or two dudes in a basement somewhere trying to scam people out of their money. The first time we scheduled our tour (a month and a half in advance) there was a snow storm so it was cancelled. We then had to reschedule but they didn't have any times that worked for us until another month and a half later. They cancelled that one because the tour guide quit for our city and said they would contact us when they got a new one. Months later we tried to schedule another one. This one seemed like it was going to happen, and my wife and I got a babysitter and went to the meeting place only to find no tour guide. We called the help number and were told that the tour guide had an emergency and we were supposed to have received a call. Tour cancelled. The places that we stopped had NO haunted history what so ever and were just weird "facts" that the guide could come up with, for example we stopped at the post office and "learned" how the term going postal came about, the chase bank had some spiel about bonnie and clyde even though that bank was completey unrelated. We did stop at a cool historic house to take pictures but that was it. It was mostly an hour and a half walk around anaheim to see nothing. At least we got a good view of the disneyland fireworks. This is absoluetly the worst customer service experience I have ever had. These fools canceled my ghost tour the day before due to the "possibility of rain". That is rediculous in itself because they should at least wait until the day of to cancel. So the day of the tour comes along and the weather is perfect...so I call back to back to back to see if the tour is still on and it goes straight to voicemail! Finally I call back around the time the tour is supposed to start and they lie to me claiming that they called everyone signed up for the tour saying it is back on. Since they contacted me to tell me the tour was canceled, I should have got a call saying that the tour was back on right?? Well no call! I never recieved a call! At this point I am furious at their ineptitude and idicoracy so I demand some sort of customer satisfaction, which they refused. The tour guide never showed!! After weeks of trying to make a reservation for a Portland tour we finally had a tour date and a confirmation email. We didn't receive a cancellation email or phone call but were left standing in the cold with our tour participants for over 30 minutes until we all just gave up. Spirit Expeditions hasn't answered any email and I think their phones are disconnected. I'm not sure how Groupon got involved in this scam but I don't believe there is any tour company. read more

We took the tour in San Francisco. Don't waste your money. It was nothing like the website description. Boring, Unprofessional, Total BS, Waste of Time! Tour guide discussed the '89 earthquake and his memories of the city as a 5 year old after the quake, who cares? That is not what we signed up for! He then spend 20+ minutes with 2 metal/ magnetized rods pretending to ask a dead general questions and supposedly receiving answers depending on how the rods moved. That would have been amusing for 5 minutes but not 20. The description on the website promised "spooky details..." "underground tunnels..." "urban legends...", there was none of that. ZERO STARS for this Horrible company!!! DO NOT BOOK A TOUR WITH SPIRIT EXPEDITIONS! For the second month in a row they have cancelled our tour with no explanation. Then, when you try to contact these people, they NEVER answer the phone. EVER! You may or may not get a call back. It is the worst run company I have ever attempted to do business with. So disappointed because we have set aside 2 Saturday evening now only to find out 4 days before that the tour is cancelled. By the looks of these other reviews, it is not just Atlanta. I sure hope Groupon does the responsible thing and refunds my money when I call them in the morning. These people are just ridiculous! read more

If there was an option to choose no stars for this rating, I would give this "business" just that. Groupon goes right along with it for even offering this place's scam as a deal. A friend and I signed up for a tour in Cleveland and were "left in a ghost town" area of Downtown Cleveland where not a single person was in sight when they were supposed to be. We called to complain and the customer service person made an excuse that we were contacted that the tour was cancelled beforehand. Completely false. We were given a refund and a make-up date, but yet again, no one was there and the tour was "cancelled" last minute. How is this place still in business? TERRIBLE COMPANY! STAY AWAY! I bought a groupon thinking this would be cool. Long story short I have been rescheduled four different times with them. Sometimes they call, sometimes they email and most of the time its the day before or two days before. (Make sure you don't book hotels if you decide to use them because you may have a cancelled tour and a booked hotel that is nonrefundable). Very unprofessional! Horrible. Made reservations for 8/3/14 Hollywood one through groupon and another through their website and they cancelled the groupon reservation but not the website reservation. I could not get a hold of anyone to talk to they did not return any phone calls. At least I got credit for the groupon reservation. I do not recommend this to anyone!!! IT IS A SCAM!!!!! read more

I called last summer to schedule a tour and they scheduled me for November! Just before the scheduled tour they email me and cancel. I reschedule for January. I show up at the appointed time and place 15 minutes early and wait 20 minutes past the scheduled time. Nobody ever shows up! I called the phone number listed to call if you have a problem with meeting your guide and the recorded message says that the number does not accept incoming calls! Completely incompetent.
