It seams almost every costume shop in Tampa has closed down, so I made the drive to Clearwater...and I'm glad I did. I have no idea why this place doesn't have better reviews. It's a family owned business and you can tell they've been around for a long time. You just can't find places like this everywhere. The House of Make Believe costumes are used in stage plays for the most part, but if you have a theme party or are looking for a unique costume this is the place to go. You have a choice of rentals and you can purchase. All the accessories come with the rental, so it's a one stop shop. It was a no brainer for me...especially since my brain isn't all that artsy fartsy. My experience was fantastic. I walked in and looked around. No more than 2 minutes later I was asked if there was anything specific I was looking for. Once I told the young man that I needed a flapper dress or something from the 20's he showed me several options. There happened to be another guy being helped with his gatsby look as well. This guy's costume was so good that when he was out of it I thought he was another guy that came in to shop! I was laughing at some of the outfits I tried on and the staff and other shoppers were engaging with me. I had a good time just choosing the costume. The staff and the other shopper agreed that the cigarette girl outfit was the winner. The seamstress told me that I'd be the only cigarette girl in the room and she was right! I went back today to return the costume and they were all eager to know how the party went. I told them I got a lot of compliments, crazy looks and people looking into my cigarette box accessory to see what was inside. I got very personalized service here, but I was told that it gets busy during Halloween, so bear with them. It's a family that works together and they really do their best to make sure you get the look you're seeking. I so recommend this small business for anyone looking for a quality costume, especially period pieces. There is a huge selection that appears to have been collected and made over the years. Yes, the shop is old and many of the costumes have been around for a while. There's a seamstress on site which leads me to believe that she created many of the pieces and accessories herself. These are actual clothes too - you know, cloth, not this cheap plastic or vinyl material that these Halloween manufacturers are producing nowadays. Everything is one a rack too, like a costume thrift store. If you're looking for a pre-packaged costume, NIB kind of thing, this is not your place. They rent and sell costumes like you'd see in a play. She had kindly pulled all of the type of costume I was looking for and placed them on a rack. No way! The items were in poor condition and all closer to the size I found in the party store. I found one that fit but was so unattractive I was not interested. She was stuffed to the gills with costumes and I can only speak to what she showed me. The fringe was ragged, the costumes looked like they needed to be cleaned/dry cleaned and were not what I expected. In all fairness I've never rented a costume before and if this is indicative of the standard costume rental store l'll not rent any costume. Again the woman was kind and helpful but this is not for me.

Unfortunately, this close to the big day, there is a "No return" policy. I think it usually takes effect the final week before the holiday. But the state was clean and neat, well as neat as can be expected. The staff were friendly and they kept checkout lines moving quickly. Nothing was on sale, that happens the day after Halloween.
