I stumbled upon the studio on the ClassPass app. They're a one stop shop for HIIT, sculpt, and strength classes. They offer two different formats - low impact (sculpt, barre, pilates, yoga) and high impact (dance, strength, circuits, HIIT). I signed up for the 45 minute Mat Pilates class with Cassidy on a Tuesday night. They're located on a busy street, so you'll have to find metered parking. Upon walking in I was greeted by the warm receptionist. I signed a waiver and she gave me a tour. The studio is pretty small. It's squeaky clean, bright, and minimalistic. There's a "lobby"/waiting area with a merchandise display. They have changing rooms, a bathroom, coat hooks, and free lockers. They only have one group fitness room with a large mirror and barre. All of the equipment for the mat pilates class was already provided to us (mat, ankle weights, magic circle, and dumbbells). I like that the class sizes are small because I prefer a more intimate experience. There were about 12-15 of us. The instructor, Cassidy, started and ended the class right on time. Let me just say this. THIS WORKOUT HUMBLED ME. I consider myself to be a fairly fit individual, but this was a humbling experience. The workout was split into core, back, upper, and lower body with different exercises for each section. It was low impact with HIGH intensity and lots of reps. We focused on form, functional movement, and mind to muscle connection. Pilates has a big emphasis on targeting deep, stabilizing muscles through using precise movements. I was huffing and puffing LOL... I FELT THE BURN!!! My core stability, flexibility, and endurance was PUT TO WORKKKK. Definitely a challenge, but fun at the same time. Cassidy was encouraging and welcoming the entire time. There were women of all different shapes, sizes, and fitness levels. We didn't feel any pressure. She gave us modifications and corrections when needed. My only critique is that she could've paused and demonstrated each exercise before we started. She jumped right in after each set and it was a little hard to see her since I was in the far left corner. I also would've liked a little introduction to the class format before we began (especially for first timers), but that's just me being big on education lol. They have monthly memberships, class packs, and drop in rates. I'll be trying a few more classes through ClassPass and I may consider getting a membership afterwards. Should you try pilates? DUH. And for those who think it "looks or sounds easy".... OH PLEASE!!! Try it out for yourself. I absolutely think it's a workout that will be rewarding and challenging for everyone.

They often do special events like sound baths and belly dancing among others. Once or twice a year, they host a yoga retreat abroad. This year was to India. They also offer yoga teacher training here. Many of the people who train here actually go on to teach here too. They recently added some new staff from Bamboo Moves, which recently closed down, so they'll be expanding their schedule. My one issue with Pure Bliss is that, because they have so many teachers, there tends to be a lot of variability with the classes. Pure bliss taught by one teacher may be entirely differently than the same pure bliss class with someone else and the difficult level varies tremendously. In general, it's all levels class, but someone's it can be more challenging based on who's in the room and other times it can be very gentle. As I've developed in my practice, I intentionally try to take the classes that will challenge me more. Lateefah, Zeni, Brian and Andrea are good for this. Brian emphasizes more flow in his class. The others are a good mix of both flow and postures. Nancy is good too if you want a more athletic class, but not necessarily as postures focused. It was also an extremely deep stretch which my body definitely needed. The class was full of people of all levels. They offer modifications for high level students. I recommend bringing a yoga mat, if you do not have one they can provide a loaner mat. I will definitely be back and try other class. I also noticed they offered classes virtually which live streamed during scheduled class times. Their classes are very reasonably priced. They offer an intro 2 week unlimited for $25. They also have a location in Edgewater. Their classes are from as early at 6:30am to the latest being 7:30pm on during the week. They do offer weekend classes 9am to 1pm on Saturday and 8:30am to 1:15 and one 5pm class at the end of the day.

It's a really popular class and it's usually a full house. Most of the students are very advanced or in training to teach themselves. I like it because it's fast paced and I feel like I'm getting stronger and more experienced as a yogi. Jhon provides a good amount of discipline to encourage you to push harder. I like that he also shares some philosophical tidbits during the class (usually toward the end). I also took the class with Shir for the first time Today. It was just me and her in the class so it was very personalized. She's so dedicated to her teaching and making sure your alignment and form are right. My favorite thing about Atmananda is that I really feel like a student when I go to class there. I'm there to learn and get better and the teachers are invested in that. I can't say that about every yoga studio I go to.

She is passionate, insightful and engaging which makes her classes very enjoyable and we certainly get a lot out of them. The style of Yoga is called Iyengar Yoga and in class we utilize a lot of different props which help you attain the proper poses even if you are not that flexible to begin with so don't be intimidated to try it out. On a side note, my wife wanted to try Yoga because she has heard about its many benefits and wanted a low impact exercise to stay active. I was mainly interested in developing more flexibility and learning to breath better which I have but have also been pleasantly surprised that I sleep better and also lingering back pain that I've had beforehand have disappeared. The studio's rates are pretty reasonable but also watch out for groupon promotions which is how we started.

On the bright side, she puts a lot of emphasis on achieving the poses in the proper form, she does demonstrations for every single position, which is great for beginners. It was too slow paced for me. This coupled with her uneasy jumpy attitude did not work for me. But it could definitely work for others. Give it a try, I guess.

They have a variety of classes for beginners and advanced practitioners alike, and at every class I go to they offer modifications or add-ons to poses so that you can really adjust to what your body needs that day. The studio is incredibly clean and beautifully maintained. Walking into the studio puts me at ease immediately. There are also zero judgments at Blackbird. At other studios I felt judged if I couldn't go into a headstand or some other inversion, and there is none of that at Blackbird. It is an encouraging environment, which is so perfect for yoga. The studio also offers workshops outside of the regular classes if you want to delve into your practice a little deeper. Another thing I noticed is how at every class, even if it is the same type of class, it is never exactly the same. There is always variety. I've been practicing yoga for two years now and in the few months that I started at Blackbird I saw a noticeable improvement in my practice. There are poses that I thought I would never be able to do or hold for more than a breath that I now do with ease. It's really amazing. Another great thing about Blackbird, especially for NYC commuters like myself, is that they have evening classes! I'm able to go to work, get home and not have to rush like a crazy person to get to class on time. It's rad. For everything that Blackbird offers, the price is amazing too. Before coming to Blackbird I was hopping around at different studios, trying to find the best fit for me. I had been trying for two years to find a 'home studio'. I knew two minutes into my first class at Blackbird that I found that studio. The owner, Hope, stated, she is culturally sensitive, understanding, and would not schedule male clients due to my cultural beliefs, but she did anyway after I signed up for $800 package. NO REFUNDS SO BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU SIGN UP FOR. She is really pushy and relentless into guilting you sign up for packages because she has money issues and keeps talking about how she wants to grow her business. She does an excellent job of making you feel bad about yourself. She will say you she doesn't have money to color her hair, which made me feel awkward and bad for her as well. I have never had this experience with other studios. People do not wear socks like other studios, nor clean afterwards. If you want to catch something be my guest. It's really disgusting. The mats and reformers are sweaty and smell. Hope, the owner, who was my instructor, does not listen to your needs and concerns. I gave her a chance, explained what I did and wanted like my last studio, but she doesn't LISTEN. She is stuck in her own head and world. During my one to one sessions, she would eat snacks, check her phone or text, and have conversations with others. The one to one session lack the attention, decorum, and professionalism like my other studio. YOU CANNOT CONCENTRATE. IT'S SO LOUD AND A NEGATIVE ENVIRONMENT. ALL THEY DO IS COMPLAIN ALL DAY LONG AND GOSSIP. IT'S NOT RELAXING and it's sooooooo small of a space for group sessions and privates. The owner does spot appropriately and pulls your ponytail or hair instead of gently correcting her movement or position. She had a "so called funny anecdote" why she does so with clients, which is degrading and really awkward. If Hope (owner) is having a bad day, adult tantrum, or in crisis, she cannot control her emotions and the session becomes consoling her feelings and emotions, so your $80 session is DOWN THE TOILET AND YOUR TIME. You don't know what mood she is in. It's just super awkward. The owner is highly emotional, unstable, and unprofessional on so many levels. She does not have any professional boundaries and wants to get into your personal business. There are studios in Tenafly and Englewood that are so much better!! I didn't get a refund for the classes I didn't attend. I want warn potential clients because the reviews here are not reliable.

But after leaving a message to make an appointment and getting contacted immediately by the most pleasant person I decided I would go. I went on a monday afternoon when there were no classes in session and was greeted by a warm receptionist I believe was named Alexandria. She was very nice and friendly and explained all the procedures for the session. The facility was beautiful and well kept. I was glad that I went and will consider going again even though the facility is a way from my home. I hope to participate in some yoga classes before my next session. I wished I lived closer to this little gem.
