Great service. My yuengling was a solid 2.50 and the bartender was awesome. The location is smack dab in the middle of Downtown and has high historic value. And the backyard patio is amazing and a sight to see. Don't forget to ask about the art on the wall back there! I've never been so disrespected as a bronze star Marine veteran who was having a senior moment and needed to use the restroom. I was told that I could not use the restroom unless I purchased something. I actually used to work there and the manager on duty, Tommie refused to allow me to use the restroom and only adding to my senior distress moment. I witnessed security checking people at the door, that's normal. Though he didn't check the women's purses going in, and the security at the door had to have been new... never once have the police patted me as thoroughly as this person had, it was a bit excessive and uncalled for. What I found to be odd was being patted down just to be turned away, I also had my I.D I should mention. As a man, you'd be able to tell if another man is carrying especially if I'm in a shirt and jeans.. I'm just saying, you don't know what they have in their purse and I get not searching it, but you didn't pat them down.. I honestly felt violated. I was there this past Saturday and attempted to get drinks upstairs, which turned into an unplanned endurance test. The bartender upstairs (I believe her name was Jeani) was shockingly rude and easily one of the worst bartenders I've ever encountered. She seemed far more interested in certain male patrons than actually serving drinks. Women were clearly not the priority. While waiting, I was treated to a loud, trashy argument that appeared to involve her personally, which really set the tone for the night. Nothing says "great customer experience" like front-row seats to bartender drama. To make things worse, a man who openly claimed to be her boyfriend was loudly using racist language, and it didn't seem to bother her at all. The fact that this behavior was allowed to continue unchecked was uncomfortable, unprofessional, and honestly gross. If that's the company someone keeps while working, it reflects very poorly on management. Overall, the upstairs vibe was chaotic, uncomfortable, and embarrassing. Trashy at its finest. On the bright side, if you actually want a drink without the attitude or the nonsense, go downstairs. Completely different experience. Fast service, friendly bartenders, and no drama. Night and day difference. Upstairs? Absolutely not. Downstairs? You'll at least get a drink and a smile. P.S. - The bartender upstairs should really lay off the drugs. read more

Two stars is generous and I won't be surprised when this place closes. I had been seeing pictures of burgers on FB and stopped by with my family. For the entire time, it was just my family of four and a larger party eating pizza. It was clear staff was limited. The environment is what you'd expect if someone threw a bunch of chairs and wobbly tables into a room with the full opportunity to have them all cleared out in a matter of hours. Cooking took a long time, and in one of my major annoyances, two plates were brought out about 10 minutes in advance of others, making it next to impossible to have a normal meal with the ebb and flow of conversation and eating. My wife also never did get any silverware for her salad, and no one else did either. Refills had to be requested, even for water, and a refill on a soda was $2 each time and you were brought a can. Food was very average in every way. We spent 90 minutes once in the door for three sandwiches and a salad - $80 with tip. By the time we were done, and after we corrected the bill from an overcharge, we couldn't wait to leave. We won't be back. read more

My friend was incorrectly accused of being underage by the security. Despite being 21 of age and having a valid government- issued identification. The security refused to let her stay. At this point we have been there for at least an hour. They told her she had to leave the premises despite letting her in. I believe this incident constitutes age discrimination and defamation, as their actions were unwarranted. read more

Customer service is virtually non-existence. Waited for over 30 minutes on the top floor waiting to get service (sitting at the bar) while the "bartender" negligibly avoided us even after making eye contact with her and politely attempting to get her attention. There were approximately 4-5 open bar seats during this time, so certainly not a "busy" visit. Moved to the second floor bar (equally not as busy) where we "only" waited about 20 minutes to get service. Bar tops and floors where filthy with virtually no regard of the staff to upkeep. Every floor smells of bad sewage and mildew. Bathrooms were the epitome of grimy. Recommend saving your money or visiting literally any other establishment if you're looking for a bar. This was the worst place I've ever eaten. It was dirty, mimosas tasted so gross, almost like the orange juice went rancid. I've never in my life had a bad mimosa! It took forever to get our food (and the place was empty on a Sunday during brunch time). When our food came, mine was correct, but my husbands looked like rehydrated eggs, they didn't bring his bacon or home fries, and brought a half empty cup of dried out grits (he didn't order grits). When they did bring out his bacon and home fries the bacon was like precooked bacon they heated up, and a pitiful little pile of tiny diced potatoes. Everything was sticky, the menus, table, cups. Stopped by on impulse for a quick lunch. I was the only customer upon arrival. The waitress was friendly and efficient. I ordered the turkey/avacado panini sandwich. Great atmosphere and history. I love that a tile on the ceiling is left exposed from the fire. Adds an aura to the great food. I was reading some of the other reviews and I am glad im not the only person who has noticed the exposed mold on the wall. It's disgusting and a health hazard. I don't want to know what the kitchen looks like. Their food is basic and not worth the money. The building is super old but that's not an excuse to why the restaurant looks like that. When you first walk in you'll notice the smell. Its so off-putting. I hope an inspector shows up and shuts them down or they get their shit together. You read the reviews here and that should be enough to tell you NOT to eat here. I've been a regular of Spirits for years but would never eat there. I know better. There are bugs, as in roaches. They have mice and rats. They have a lot of expired food as in mayonnaise. I'm writing this to save people from being sick. It's a miracle if you eat here and you don't get sick. Usually the only people who eat at Spirits are tourists who don't know any better. Yes, the girls who wait tables are always new. They can't keep servers downstairs because they can't make enough money to support themselves. Lately I've been less of a regular. I'm kinda tired of being overcharged at the bar upstairs. I'm tired of draft beer from dirty lines. They never clean or change the lines. The bartenders don't pay attention. They spend me time on their android phones or talking to their friends than actually waiting on customers. When Brian is bartending he's outside smoking and hitting on girls more often than serving customers. Also, when he closes the place he often talks girls into staying after for more drinks behind locked doors. I bet ABC would love that tidbit. Brian and Richard are nice guys but they need a refresher course in bartending, or just a course in how to serve people. The bathroom upstairs is ridiculous. The mens room smells like urine. It doesn't just smell like urine, it smells like a porta potty that's been knocked over. Often one toilet is broken. About the overcharging. There's been a lot of talk about it from customers and it'll probably catch up to them someday. From hearing so many people talk about it it's becoming a huge problem. Dive bars are cool. I like the clientele here. I like the graffiti in the bathrooms. I like seeing regulars. I don't mind that the place is falling apart (though I do mind water coming out of the ceiling on top of people which I've seen happen twice). But I don't like all the stuff I mentioned above. And it's also amazing the health department hasn't shut them down. This has to be one of the most disgusting restaurants I have ever been to. My first clue should have been the aesthetics of the inside. It was filthy upon first glance. We were seated at the first booth. We made jokes about holding onto our plates since the table was so off balance. There were holes in the wall, and a huge patch of exposed mold on the ceiling. I went to the bathroom to wash my hands where one of the staff was moping. She quickly informed me the smell was probably mold and to be careful of the water dripping from the ceiling. I tried to side step but several large moldy puddles landed on my head. Now I pray that it wasn't a bathroom overflow from upstairs. I took a handful of napkins and towels off. Food finally came out after a long wait. Only our party of four dishes staggered out one by one. By the time the last dish came out all other food was cold. The fries were flavorless, the gyro had one dollop of sauce all on the first bite, and even worse my daughter's two inch thick burger was raw. Not medium, but disgustingly raw!! We got our check and left. After reviewing the check we realized that all the half empty glasses of coke that were refilled were charged for the refills. This place was a freaking dump! We will never be back, and will caution everyone that we know not to go there, unless the like Moldy water in your hair with you lame fries! read more

Spirits is the kind of place people will either love or hate. If you're expecting to get a group of people out and plan something for a night, I wouldn't recommend Spirits. However the best way to really enjoy Spirits is during a night of barhopping. This place has a certain non-pretentious attitude that is nice if you just want to drop in with a small group of friends. Spirits has a main bar area that isn't too big, but is small enough that you can easily have a conversation with people next to you without getting lost in a sea of people. Past the bar area, there is an area with pool tables if you choose to grab a beer then play a game of pool with your friends. There is also a backdoor for outside enjoyment. The reason for the three stars though is not necessarily because of the atmosphere or service, but the type of crowd it brings. The crowd isn't bad, but many people will not enjoy the environment because it's a straight dive bar. It isn't exactly sleek or sophisticated, so many others will be disappointed even though I personally liked Spirits for what it is. That being said if you're looking for a more-upstanding establishment to make plans for, I wouldn't recommend it. However, if you're looking for quick plans such as a guys' night out or for a casual night with last minute plans, then go to Spirits. If you're broke and need to drink on a budget and eat without getting the runs, this is the place to be

I've always known the place was a dive. However, I used to have a lot of friends frequent the place, and they always had cold PBR. My friends have since moved on since my last visit, and I can safely say, so have I. When you walk into the place you're greeted with a musky smell. You may or may not get the attention of the bartender, unless it's Richard, he's the lone bright spot of the place, and he is always quick with a drink and quicker with a quip. Once you get your cold, refreshing PBR, you'll notice that the only place you'd be willing to sit is on the bar stools. The other seating is dirty and just smells awful. God knows what has happened on those things. On your way to the back you'll find a cigarette machine and the bathrooms. Often times, the high quality clientele has ripped the door off of the men's bathroom. This is wonderful as anybody who is walking in the place can see you urinating. Upon entrance to said bathroom, the stench from week old, yeast filled urine about knocks you over, and the interesting graffiti, will make you question your life choices. Beyond the bathrooms there are two very worn pool tables that are now often times missing balls. Then lastly, is the deck, where all the smokers will hang out. Sometimes there is stuff going on the third floor. If you have to visit this establishment, make sure it's on a third floor night, as you can find a solid DJ, and your stay isn't as painful. Don't even get me started about the food. I haven't seen a native even entertain the idea. read more

It's interesting to see the number of bad review for this place. We stopped here to eat lunch after antiquing all morning. Yes, it's dark and a bit dated inside. There is an interesting history to the place, though, and our food was actually quite good! I remarked to the waitress that in our weeklong college tour trip, my sandwich there was one of the best that I'd had all trip. It wasn't real busy, but our waitress was on top of everything, and the orders came out as we expected. We had absolutely no concerns about food poisoning, nor did their food affect us.
