Love this place!! GM kicks ass! He works as hard as the bartenders. Great drinks great atmosphere.

The few times you're able to get into the bar it's okay. My friends and I have been turned away by bouncers at least 3 times over an hour before last call. The bouncers literally scream and yell at you that "the doors are closed" even though their hours say differently. I'd understand not being allowed in around 1:30 but we've come around midnight and been yelled at to go away. Not sure why they'd refuse paying customers but okay! read more

My family and I (5 of us) stopped in today while exploring downtown Fredericksburg. We are locals however have not had the opportunity to patronize American Spirits until today. Wow! What a nice experience. The service was excellent. The food was also excellent. We really appreciated that they were open, and that their backyard patio was open and inviting. They even had a pit set up for cornhole! My wife and I will return for some quality adult time (sans kids) in the near future. Thank you, American Spirits! read more

OK - first of all .... holy crap. My friend and I were in from out of town, and I guess we really had no idea what we were in for, and a couple brews to the breeze we sauntered over to Spirits. We were suckered in by the 'cafe' sidewalk table. Which oddly enough sitting on the sidewalk was cleaner than the inside of the restaurant. The 2 waitresses inside immediatley instructed us that we'd have to wait and they were buried with businessn and no one at the 2?3? tables inside had gotten their food yet. Not exactly a sales pitch, and also not exactly busy enough to warrent the panic, but then again who knows what they had just smoked in back prior to us arriving. One waitress told us this was her "first night" on the job, which by the site of her left us both asking - what the hell did she do before this? Unless they both had other careers as professional saddlebags, they looked like life long diner wenches to me. We got the food, 2 burgers, ate it, were actually concerned about food poisoning, but alas we made it out safe 24 hours later. Phewww.... dodged one that time. (apparently the waitresses were double duty as cooks that night too - oh great!) But wait there's more... I can not describe the bathrooms to someone who hasn't experienced it. Intense odor of mold; tiles - peeled off, busted, shattered on the floor, dust, grime, urine dried and caked to perfection. I went first and thought, 'Oh, shit" about telling my friend what I had seen as we were still waiting for our food. Oh ya, just in case that's not enough for you - go upstairs to the 'bar'. Standard dive, dark, cheap, pleasant barkeep that night though, but,uh.. let's just say not a 'date place'. I'm just so glad we didn't get sick. read more

We went on a Saturday afternoon, looking to try something different from our usual family hang-outs. We have 2 little children so we needed something kid friendly. And we found it! They're doing breakfast all day now. Unfortunately, they don't know how to DO breakfast. The waitress was flummoxed by my wife's request for an egg white omelet, and all of the ingredients for the two inch thick pile of egg that they call an omelet were stacked unceremoniously in the middle. Oh my god. I went to have a beer here and I think I caught a disease from everything--the disgusting couches, the fat weird looking bartender and the woman who looks like she is battling a midlife crisis. They overcharged me, too and my friend. Apparently this place overcharges all the time...a little scam that the bartenders got going. There was also a fight. Two. The pool tables look like someone shat on them and the bathrooms---how the hell does the Virginia health department allow this cestpool to exist?? Stay away!!!! read more

Not surprised to see that this place only has two stars. It's very run down (which is ok because most divey places are) but usually places like this tend to have extremely good customer service or food. I only got to experience the service and I can assure you if the food is as horrible of the service this place is absolutely worthless. I was with a group of friends 10+ (all of which are servers and know a thing or two about handling customers), we ordered 6 fireball shots, the lady bartender poured them and never gave a price to us. I watched her from mix to pour and not once did she give me a price. She poured the shots and when she got done a fellow bar patron continued to help disburse them to us. Pissed off because we hadn't paid (we had no idea how much we needed to lay) she yanked back the shots and put them behind the bar. She then appeared agitated as if we were in the wrong but I had literally been watching her the entire time and would have easily paid for the over priced shots if she had spitted out a number. Finally she did, turned around and for a continued 4.5 minutes she ignored us as we tried giving her the money. I'm not usually this dissatisfied with a first time experience but this one stole the cake. I'll never come here again. If anyone asks to go here I'll recommend somewhere else close by but this place will never see another dime from me. I enjoy this restaurant. It is a small restaurant in downtown Fredericksburg, and has a very awesome story behind it. Their pizza is very good, and the environment reflects downtown Fredericksburg. The staff is nice. I have only had the pizza before, so I can't comment on the other food. It does seem a little on the dirty side, but mainly because it is old. Definitely a must stop when visiting Fredericskburg. The story keeps me coming back. The name means more than just the alcohol. :D read more

I have no idea how this place is still open. There is no way it passes health inspections and if it does somebody is getting paid off. The second floor is a safety hazard, disgusting, and I'm sure covered in mold and other bacteria. I would never eat the food here. From what I've heard the condiments are expired, the food isn't prepped in a sanitary fashion, and the kitchen is dirty and has a bug problem. Food poisoning is a common feeling after eating here. I have gone here for drinks and they're cheap but I'm not sure that I was putting something good in my body. I try to avoid this place and only go to show people what a disgusting joke it is. read more

We sat down and ordered our food before I checked-in this place and seen the horrible reviews. I was terrified, I prayed ppl were wrong--they were. The fries were seasoned perfectly and had just the right amount of cheese and bacon bits (not skimpy like most places esp. For the price of 6$) the wings weren't drenched in super thick or too watery sauce the consistency of the sauce was also perfect. The place is outdated and intimidating for a food place but I've been to worst looking places that actually served bad food. I expected my salad to be gooey and slimy like how bagged salads tend to be when kept too long but to my surprise it was perfect. My only complaint about the salad was that as it was supposed to be rotisserie chicken it was actually chicken breast tenders prolly grilled on something like a foreman grill--honestly it wasn't bad I do suggest they change the name of the plate as it wasn't rotisserie chicken, also maybe check their recipe for the house Caesar it tasted a bit foul but no problem I used the ranch on the table. The server was fast and efficient checked on us multiply times we didn't have to wave her down. 4 stars for the delicious fries and wings and the almost perfect salad. read more

This please really let me down. Passed by them for years and finally went yesterday since they have outside seating where my dog can sit with me. Ordered the lamb gyro and a mimosa. Took 15 for the drink, only saw the waitress to drop it off and disappeared. 35mim after that the food arrives and she never comes back so I cant ask for silverware and napkins. The lamb was thin strips of crispy, crunchy jerky like semblance. The yogurt sauce was nice but put in a large flop on the top and without silverware it was not really apart of the gyro. Then they charged the wrong amount on two items so another 10min to fix that once she arrived to take the plate and give me the bill. Some of this I could have gone in to ask to get fixed but since I couldn't bring the dog inside and can't leave him outside I was very reliant on them to actually come to me. Over all the dog enjoyed his time and would come again. However as the human, I will not be back. read more

Not impressed with the food. I ordered a salad with NO tomato or black olives and it came with them. My husband and daughter did not enjoy their food either. There were little black looking gnats the kept flying around and then to top off a dinner we were not enjoying a roach crawled accross out table onto the wall. We stopped eating! We were done! My husband brought it to the servers attention and of course she was shocked and went to tell another person. They did not charge us for our food. We will never visit this place again! read more

Place was a total dump, waiters were shouting back and forth from the front to back of the resturant. They also didnt have my first two food choices. Went here today for the first and last time. The place was dark and dirty looking but we were hungry. Only a few people in the place but one had to sit behind me and continue to lean back in the tiny bench pressing me against the table. The food finally came and the sandwich wasn't bad, but there was a roach that seemed to want it more than I did. When I said something to the waitress she said she had not seen any today. She did try to take care of our bill, but we paid it anyway. I will not go there again after reading the other reviews. Just wished I'd read them before we went in. read more

The waitress did not check on me, offer any silverwear or drinks, and had me help myself to drinks. Kind of divey atmosphere but the staff is all friendly and awesome! The bar has a big outdoor space in the back, dancing upstairs, and pool tables in the back. One of the best dive bars downtown. The bartenders are always friendly and keep your drinks full. Place isn't the cleanest but what do you expect for a dive bar? Music is blaring from the jukebox and you can create the song list from your phone. If you talk to the regulars the say you cant beat the Rits...The outside is starting to come together out back and is a nice hangout anytime. I will continue coming back for cheap drinks and good times. O and Thursdays are $5 pitchers...you cant beat that! read more

You get a mixed crowd from hippies, to grundgie gross people, to attractive people and its got 2 floors. One is a dance floor and one is more of strictly a bar area.
