I've been reflecting on this review since I first moved my elderly parents into this facility a…read moreyear and a half ago. I hesitated to write a review earlier, because I did not know if it would affect their care. Sadly they have now both passed. If I could have offered this feedback directly and felt that it would be heard, I would have done that. But my strong impression dealing with the management here is that they are not interested in feedback and do not view it as a way of learning or improving as a business, but rather as a waste of time and a source of resentment. So I just want to make sure others have an informed understanding of what they are getting themselves into here. The kind of review that I wish I had had myself when I first uprooted my parents, both of them with advanced Parkinson's Disease, and moved them across the country from Pennsylvania to live here. Highlights: - The facility is very beautiful. That was what I was sold on originally. - The sales team is kind and good at their job. I feel that they did their best to lean in and smooth the way for my parents and for me, even though when it came to actual management of the residence, that went beyond their scope. - There are many individual nurses and caregivers who are very caring and good at their jobs. - Overall I believe that the facility is mismanaged. The leadership of the center is inaccessible. They do not come to work. They do not pick up their phones. They do not respond to emails. There are no company email lists that allow you to get greater visibility for your communication so that someone higher up will hold the facility accountable to respond--your email goes into an individual email inbox where it is largely ignored. - The nurses and caregivers are not actively managed. No one helps them organize themselves or facilitates communication. No one is present to see first hand when they are over-stretched and cannot handle all of the individual needs on their floor. This results in some pretty serious mismanagement of medication. One time I discovered purely by accident, because I happened to visit, that my father had not received his Parkinson's medication for 3 days, because they had not re-ordered it from the pharmacy or had some type of snag. And they did not call me or make sure that it was resolved. They just let the medication lapse. - Once I saw that was happening, I went far, far, far out of my way to create written medication schedules to try to ensure medication was administered correctly. Multiple times my father himself caught incorrect medication, even though he was barely in a cognitive state to be able to do that and it was very unfair for him to have to be concerned with it. Again, I do not attribute this to the nurses. They are good, well meaning people who want to do their jobs. I attribute it to management that does not put in place systems for them or help organize things or ensure good communication. They just are sort of left there to function as best as they can without leadership. - Most of the nurses / caregivers they hire are good, but some are NOT good. Early on, there was a nurse on the team who got into a very adversarial relationship with my mother, trying to force her to go to bed or to get up or something that she did not want to do. When I came to visit after a week trip I found her in a paranoid, delusional state, convinced that someone was trying to hurt her. Of course she was very sick and it was basically a delusion. But when I interacted with that nurse myself, I understood why she felt that way. He was aggressive and controlling. They did promise to fire that nurse. But then on a future occasion I came back and found him there. I had to complain again. - Memory care is a bit better. But primarily it is better because once someone is on hospice, they have access to a separate hospice provider who comes INTO the facility to provide care. And that hospice provider is excellent, top to bottom. I cannot possibly say enough good things about them. But they are not employed or managed by the center. They just come in on a daily basis to provide care. - In the last month of my father's life, he developed very severe delusions arising out of Parkinson's related dementia, and became aggressive. It was very sad and very hard to watch. My father was a mild-mannered mathematician all his life. It simply was not him or his character to behave in the way he did. - I was so upset by the way the facility handled this. They called the police on him. I had to drop everything and rush over to keep them from escalating past a point of no return. When I went up to the apartment, Brenda, the leader in charge of AL, was smirking and laughing at him and his delusions. It turned my stomach. It still keeps me up at night. If you have your parents or loved ones here, please be prepared to work directly with the staff yourself to ensure communication & good care. It requires constant vigilance.

I'm sure for health care or personal needs they are probably better, but are just not good with helping at household chores, which is all she needed. Everyone was very nice, they just didn't provide what we needed. Also, be warned. They will refer you to Veterans Home Care to see if you can get VA benefits for Aid and Attendance. That place is a total scam. They will take control of the benefits and have you authorize them to make withdrawals from your bank account. Completely unnecessary.

Instead of thinking I was snooty (for being well, snooty), she said there was nothing wrong with stating my preferences and that she could send college students to help me out. Both helpers were delightful, bright, hard working and easy to talk to. In summary, I've had a great experience with Nurse Next Door. (And it's a good thing because trying to sort out the individual applicants on care.com gave me a migraine!)

I was recently diagnosed with sleep apnea an told I needed a cpap machine. My doctor, without my…read morepermission, passed my name, phone number, and prescription to this company. They Started calling me and I started calling them and eventually I actually was able to get some one at their office to answer a telephone. It took several calls over a week to actually get a live human on the phone. BTW, I made several calls from my cell phone. But, I pointed out that I am a teacher and can not take calls on the cell phone. I gave specific instructions not to ever try to call me on that number. So, of course, from then on they only called on that number. When I got someone of the phone they wanted to set up a time to have at technician come out and check the wiring in my home. I asked why they needed to do that. And I was told that they had to make sure that the wiring would handle the machine. I asked the obvious question. "What are the power requirements of the machine?" The answer was "Huh?". I said, how many amps does the machine need? Does it use standard line current? Does it use a standard three prong connector? The person on the line told me it used a standard three prong connector, used normal line current, and he clearly had no idea what an "amp" was. So, I said, you call me back with the power requirements and I'll let you know if that is acceptable to me. He said, that there was no need for that because the technician had to come out and install it anyway an he could do the check at that time... I said that I had understood that I was getting a portable machine because I travel and I could not accept a machine that needed and kind of installation other than being plugged into the wall. And, I had to know what the power requirements were and a lot of other things about the machine before I could accept it. I mentioned that I have a lot of allergies, especially mold allergies, and wanted to know what the machine was made of so I could evaluate how mold resistant it was. I asked a lot of other questions. This went on over about a week of phone calls as I read more about CPAP machines and found out that there are many choices. During that time he first tried to tell me that the answers to my questions didn't matter, that there was no difference between the different machines. Then he tried to satisfy me with bafflegab. Then he tried lying. I don't think he knew he was lying. I think he was just so lacking in education and knowledge that he thought he was telling me something reasonable. The last straw was when he told me that a technician would have to come out and service the machine every week. Of course, my insurance, and I, would be billed for that service. I ask what the tech would have to do *every week*. Well, the tech would have to change the chip. What chip? The one that records my sleep data. The data my doctor wants to see to monitor my progress. Oh, so why does a tech have to do that every week. Well, the chip fills up every week. I said, no, that is not going to happen. Suddenly it turned out that I could swap the chip my self and just send it in by snail mail using special mailers they'll sell me along with extra chips. Why can't I just copy it to my PC and email it? Oh, that is impossible... It can not be done. It would require proprietary hardware and software. Not at all true. Turns out it is a standard sd card. I did some research. It turns out they were trying to sell me a ResMed CPAP machine. A machine that has very poor customer ratings. The ResMed machines record sleep data on a standard SD card. A 1 Gigabyte SD card can hold at least 8 months of sleep data, but the ResMed machines are programmed to only store 7 days of data no matter how large a card you put in. They have a USB port, but if I read the specs correctly, they do not make full data available over the USB port. One part of the ResMed web site lists many features of their machines that are designed increase the profit of their business partners, especially how they can increase what they bill to Medicare, Medicaid, and private health insurance. Features like limiting the amount of data the store of an SD chip so that it has to be processed every 7 days. If they supported HD SD chips, or even just the full capacity of SD chips, or USB flash drives, a patient could just pull it and take it with them whne they visit the doctor. a cheap thumb drive can store years of data. By forcing the data to be processed every seven days they have an excuse to pay people to go collect the data at peoples homes and to "process" it at their office and distribute reports to doctors. Minimal cost for maximal profit. So, after my last round of questions, they said they needed to talk to my Dr. They have not called me back. So, is this place a scam designed to bilk insurance companies, or is my experience just an example of one customer encountering one incompetent employee? I don't know.
